Yikes... he beat me to the answer! :^) On Thu, 15 Jul 1999, Civileme translated thoughts to electrons: YES Linux needs virus scanners. To protect other systems it firewalls for on LANs, for example. Essentially the linux implementation is "virus-proof". Theoretically, a virus could enter and wait in memory for a "make" to be issued and perhaps get some source compiled into one of your programs, but that would be a virus worthy of genius-level effort. Worms and trojans are unlikely to do more than harm your own user space, leaving the system and its protected files quite intact, and since they are generally written to be as destructive as possible, they exit with error after the first attempt to do something unpermitted. What we pay for this protection is learning to live with privileged and unprivileged user spaces, file permissions, and the like. I think the price is cheap, having once lost six years worth of writing to a delayed MAC virus (yes, it was all over the backup tapes as well). Civileme Paul Benjamin wrote: If you have Mandrake 6.0 PowerPack edition you can look on the Applications CD (demo commercial) you will find AVP. It is a Russian anti-virus scanner. My understanding it is mostly used to scan email for windows users attached via Samba. If you don't have the Power Pack you can get it at www.avp.ch There is a virus (or trojan horse) called Bliss that will attack Linux. I don't know anything more about it. I found a link about it at: http://LinuxStart.Com/ but I didn't follow it. If you don't spend much time as root or equivalent and keep your file permissions locked down it would be hard for a virus to spread. The thing to look out for is a trojan horse or worm. If you keep up with one or two of the Linux news sites you should be ok. Just follow up on the security alerts to see if they affect what you are doing. Well, if any of them eventually resolve, then your DNS IPs are probably correct. Find a specific IP (204.71.200.74 is www.yahoo.com) and 'ping -c10' it from the command line. That should eliminate the DNS server from the equation. If that returns in a reasonable amount of time (about 200-250 ms for me with a 56K modem connection) then the problem is likely the DNS server itself. If the ping time is long then your connection is probably poor in general and that could be line noise or a problem at your ISP. I was wondering cuz I heard Linux uses the middle button in many mice... _ "One World, One Web, One Program" - Microsoft Promotional Ad "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuehrer" - Adolf Hitler =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Get Your Own Free Pop or Web Based Email and a 10MB Web Site for FREE at: http://www.nettaxi.com! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
re: [newbie] Gateway Soundcard on MB
BTW, your problem with the messages comming out as one long string is not the typers fault (they shouldn't have to hit enter in the middle of No...its the problem of YOUR program. Because your original came out extra wide, while in this one which I am replying to came out OK. I have seen several other messages of yours that have come through the sameone long sentence. sentences), but the fault of your email program? Which program are you using? I'd recommend Eudora or Outlook... Like I said...from our end it looks like something is screwed up on YOUR machine. Hey! easy with the flames guys... ^_- _ "One World, One Web, One Program" - Microsoft Promotional Ad "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuehrer" - Adolf Hitler =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Get Your Own Free Pop or Web Based Email and a 10MB Web Site for FREE at: http://www.nettaxi.com! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

And how does one configure a soundcard manually (when the card included drivers for every OS except Linux)? --- "Free your mind... and your ass will follow" Bono, U2 Get your FREE Email at http://mailcity.lycos.com Get your PERSONALIZED START PAGE at http://my.lycos.com

About ICQ: It could possibly work with WINE. Or you could get VMware (http://www.vmware.com) and run ICQ under Windows and have Linux running on your computer simultaneously! --- "Free your mind... and your ass will follow" Bono, U2 Get your FREE Email at http://mailcity.lycos.com Get your PERSONALIZED START PAGE at http://personal.lycos.com
[newbie] I want to use Linux...Can someone help?
Hello: My name is Alberto, and i want my computer to work properly. This doesnt seem to be an unreasonable desire... Given the fact that computers have evolved so much in the last couple of decades, it would sound logical that the average joe or jane should be able to use a home desktop computer to help with usual business and home tasks such as wordprocessing, or maybe some semi-profesional image-processing (retouching photos and the like). Is the desire to be able to perform such simple tasks like consulting e-mail, or playing a simple mp3 file without my software freezing and my operating system crashing? Yes, you have guessed it. I, like millions of people all over the world, use the operating system created in Redmond. I believed, like many, many people out there, that this erratic and frustrating computer behavior was in some way "normal"... Until I heard about Linux. I am a journalist, so I did some research. And, the more I learned about this wonderful proyect, the more I wanted to try it. But something stopped me (this was around a year ago): "If your VCR blinks '12:00', you should not use Linux" Well, my VCR blinks "12:00"... And so does my microwave... There have been times when even my alarm clock blinks "12:00"... Mhmm... The "you should know at least how to handle several Unix commands" and the "Linux is just for geeks, nobody serious makes software for it" part also did much to discourage me. And finally a more technologically saavy friend of mine just shot it point blank: "You are planning on going to Linux? Good luck!" So I decided to delay this very important decision. I believed (and I still do) that Linux would eventually evolve out of the "just for engineers" niche and into a more mainstream (easier to use and get software for) status. I thought I would wait for a couple of years for this, but two days ago ran into the Mandrake homepage. I became excited again... ^_^ But, before I become discouraged again, I ask you who are so much more able with technology, Is it finally time to switch? I must say that I have no intention of becoming a systems administrator, nor to learn more Unix than I know Ms-DOS (which is like 15-20 commands). I just want my computer to work without having to worry about some piece of badly written, undocumented piece of junk software crashing it everytime I try to start a simple wordprocessor. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated...
