the rest of the disk would be for Linux. Then I tried to install Mandrake, but DrakX
told me that the partition for Linux is beyond the cylinder 1024, so I quit

the cylinder 1024?

Can I keep my hd like

!Win98(10Gb)--!!Linux!

or should I go to something like

On Thu, 15 Jul 1999, Civileme translated thoughts to electrons:
YES Linux needs virus scanners. To protect other systems it firewalls for on
LANs, for example. Essentially the linux implementation is "virus-proof".
Theoretically, a virus could enter and wait in memory for a "make" to be issued
and perhaps get some source compiled into one of your programs, but that would be
a virus worthy of genius-level effort. Worms and trojans are unlikely to do more
than harm your own user space, leaving the system and its protected files quite
intact, and since they are generally written to be as destructive as possible,
they exit with error after the first attempt to do something unpermitted.

What we pay for this protection is learning to live with privileged and
unprivileged user spaces, file permissions, and the like. I think the price is
cheap, having once lost six years worth of writing to a delayed MAC virus (yes,
it was all over the backup tapes as well).

  Hi,

Recently my system failed to boot (I had added something to rc.local, that
didn't belong there). On irc I was told that I could still boot if I gave
linux single at the LILO boot. This worked, but to my surprise I never had
to enter a login or a password. Even then, I was allowed to change rc.local
 back to what it was.

Is this normal? I thought Linux was supposed to be so secure.

Well, if any of them eventually resolve, then your DNS IPs are probably
correct. Find a specific IP (204.71.200.74 is www.yahoo.com) and 'ping
-c10' it from the command line. That should eliminate the DNS server from
the equation. If that returns in a reasonable amount of time (about
200-250 ms for me with a 56K modem connection) then the problem is
likely the DNS server itself. If the ping time is long then your
connection is probably poor in general and that could be line noise or a
 problem at your ISP.

 Hope that helps.

And when it says if _cannot_ resolve?

one of my users (my wife actually!) gets an error, something like "the following

[newbie] Theme problem

1999-06-11 Per discussione Jose Alberto Abreu

Hello all:

After installing and configuring Mandrake 5.3 more or less decently, I
decided I was ready for taking it to the next step.
I borrowed and installed Corel Wordperfect without any problems, then
decided to download some themes and some mp3's.

Went to themes.org and downloaded a couple of KDE themes and one of the
installers (i believe these are bash scripts), called ktinstaller.tar.gz
Ran the thing and installed without problems (i then believed), I now
had a couple of nice green bars and a leafy background.

But when I tried to open a window KDE crashed and shut me down!

now I cant use my regular account, at least not in KDE mode (im writing
this from my root account), and since I am pretty inept at the command
line, I was wondering if any of you could help me uninstall this theme
to reclaim my desktop.

 Jose,
I have the same problem and found it works with a different PS/2 mouse.
I think the problem is that I must have somewhere along the line told
the system that it was a dev/mouse instead of a dev/psaux.

I just edited the XF86Config file mouse section to read
 "dev/psaux"
and am hoping this solves the problem.
 XV86Config is in either /etc or /etc/X11.

Hopefully I can get back to you with good results to report.

Thanks... meanwhile I will try all the selections of mouseconfig.

And Will: sorry, I was talking about Mandrake 5.3
I subscribed to this list about 3 weeks ago to learn about linux, and then I
finally found some people who distribute Mandrake here in Mexico.

No, actually I saw that trick in one of the Linux Documentation. Don't know
which one but it does work. Of course you can't do that if you're logged in over
a network. It is found in the /etc/inittab file. It sure sounds funny though.

[newbie] ancient monitor

1999-04-25 Per discussione Jose Alberto Abreu

Greetings, you-who-are-wiser-than-i-am:

I am currently in the process of making the jump... (im gonna buy the Mandrake CD from
my local distributor this week). But I am currently in the "get all the info you can
get about your system"

Living in Mexico, and having not much money, I have scrounged my way to a computer
(you would have to see what you can get in the flea markets!).

AMD processor (is there any other?^_-) K6200, 40k ATAPI CD-Rom, floppy, a second hand
1.2 Gig Seagate hard drive... Yamaha OPL SAx soundcard with cheap speakers... Cirrus
Logic GD5436/5446 video card, 14.4 modem (im planning on changing this one, but Im
wary of buyin a dumb winmodem)... Everything is being documented...

Problem is... my monitor is a complete mystery. Its an old Compaq that a friend gave
to me, it was part of his 386 setup...
In windblows, it works as "standard VGA monitor" and also works under "Acer 11D", but
fails to enable 800-600 resolution in both cases (I use it in 640x480)...

Can I use this under Linux? Can i get it to run 800-600?

Thanks...

Jose Alberto

You won't have any problems at all with that monitor. The Xconfigurator
tool even knows what an AcerView 11D is! Just choose that monitor, and
 you'll be all set.

As for 800x600, X is nice, but it's not a miracle worker! I would imagine
that the limiting factor is probably the monitor -- it just won't go any
higher. So, you'll probably be stuck at 640x480.

Thank you for your help...

I'm not familiar with the wheel-mice, but I know others on this list are
using them. Hopefully, someone will pop-up with a quick answer.

I was wondering cuz I heard Linux uses the middle button in many mice...

And how does one configure a soundcard manually (when the card included drivers for
every OS except Linux)?

About ICQ:

It could possibly work with WINE. Or you could get VMware
(http://www.vmware.com) and run ICQ
under Windows and have Linux running on your computer
simultaneously!

But then again, if KICQ and LICQ exist, and theyre good... why fiddle with widows?

instalacisn?

[newbie] I want to use Linux...Can someone help?

1999-04-10 Per discussione Jose Alberto Abreu

Hello:

My name is Alberto, and i want my computer to work properly.

This doesnt seem to be an unreasonable desire... Given the fact that computers have
evolved so much in the last couple of decades, it would sound logical that the average
joe or jane should be able to use a home desktop computer to help with usual business
and home tasks such as wordprocessing, or maybe some semi-profesional image-processing
(retouching photos and the like).
Is the desire to be able to perform such simple tasks like consulting e-mail, or
playing a simple mp3 file without my software freezing and my operating system
crashing?

Yes, you have guessed it. I, like millions of people all over the world, use the
operating system created in Redmond.

I believed, like many, many people out there, that this erratic and frustrating
computer behavior was in some way "normal"... Until I heard about Linux.

I am a journalist, so I did some research. And, the more I learned about this
wonderful proyect, the more I wanted to try it. But something stopped me (this was
around a year ago):

"If your VCR blinks '12:00', you should not use Linux"

Well, my VCR blinks "12:00"... And so does my microwave... There have been times when
even my alarm clock blinks "12:00"... Mhmm...

The "you should know at least how to handle several Unix commands" and the "Linux is
just for geeks, nobody serious makes software for it" part also did much to discourage
me. And finally a more technologically saavy friend of mine just shot it point blank:
"You are planning on going to Linux? Good luck!"

So I decided to delay this very important decision. I believed (and I still do) that
Linux would eventually evolve out of the "just for engineers" niche and into a more
mainstream (easier to use and get software for) status.

I thought I would wait for a couple of years for this, but two days ago ran into the
Mandrake homepage.

I became excited again... ^_^

But, before I become discouraged again, I ask you who are so much more able with
technology,
Is it finally time to switch?

I must say that I have no intention of becoming a systems administrator, nor to learn
more Unix than I know Ms-DOS (which is like 15-20 commands).

I just want my computer to work without having to worry about some piece of badly
written, undocumented piece of junk software crashing it everytime I try to start a
simple wordprocessor.

Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated...

Jose Alberto Abreu (sorry about all of that yakking... but hey, Im a writer)
