WindowsME is a joke if I want to say do some video capture or producing. If all I do is download email, surf the net, work on documents, play with some photos with Adobe, or do my finances I never seea crash or get a blue screen of death. Although, theMac does come with Quicken, personally never liked it, it does annoy me with the single button mouse. Mostpeoplewho tell me they get crashes usually are not opening email or touching up photos. Linux does crash but handles very well without taking whole system with it. Mac is the same way too. I have hardly seen Mac crash but as far as multitasking goes I get the impression it is slower than Linux and Windows. Thats my impression so far since I had the Macfor ashort time and have been using Linux for less than a year. With Windows2000 you get better stability compared to WindowsMEbut you pay a premium while with Linux it just comes standard and personally it should whether I download it for free or purchase a package box. Mac no matter what they put in is a premium price product.

For what its worth I run Linux4Windows. The first dozen or so times I couldn't get it pass the boot up. At one point I got a half loaded desktop. I am still new to Linux but this is what I did. When creating the boot up disk I used the CDrom.image instead of the network.image suggested in my instruction manual. I created the swap file size to the amount of RAM I have on my desktop. Then I booted after Linux asked if it should boot into Xwindows and default user. Two in a row I have installed and successfully booted into the Kdesktop. I am not a pro with Linux but if this information is helpful in any way I hope it works for you. Good luck.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

[newbie] Looking for something

Not to intentionally break with the Linux forum here but since there seems to be a wide variety of backgrounds here from around the globe I was wonderingif anyone has seen or heard of alaptop with the name MEGA IMAGE (platinum series) with model number P86? Friend bought one but didn't get an adapter that charges and powers the laptop. He plans to load Linux-Mandrake butcan't get the battery to charge or power the machine using RadioShack generic adapters. Any response or helpis appreciated.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Re: [newbie] Floppy flopped, Linux hosed

I just had a similiar problemtwo days agowith my Linux4Windows. First my mouse went a little screwy then my monitor went into suspend mode. I reboot it through the reset button on my box and booted back into Linux. No problem. The next day I wanted to play and learn a little bit more of Linux but never got pass the initial boot process. As soon as the Kdesktop was about to load up the system crashed again. Monitor flashed "suspend mode" then later it stated "check connection". I tried several times to boot into Linux, this was the first Linux distro I was able to load into my pc, but never got pass startx. I tried clicking the uninstall button but was given an error message about a component missing. I just dragged the whole Linux4Windows folder into the trash bin removed mbr and rebooted. Now Windows is the only thing that boots up. I like Linux justas much asMacintosh and Windows but frankly, they all are screwy and have their short comings. Linux is just younger than the other two but I don't see it as more stable, it might have problems with hardware mostly because of proprietary limitation but I find it as stable as Windows and Mac. I am still going to install a Linux but this time I want it on its own harddrive. The drive I was using was intended for my homevideo editing hobby.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Re: [newbie]To varun, Slowly getting there!

I know your feeling. I bought Linux4Windows despite many warnig against it because Linux would run faster on its own partition, which is true, or they are very anit-Windows which is the impression I got from them. On my laptop the CD boots from the CD drive. I could never get pass the dowloading the KDesktop. It would take half an hour to load HALF of the desktop. I tried a full installation through Mandrake 7.2 suite. It couldn't work with my CyberBlade graphics card. I tried Linux4Windows on my newly built system and it worked this time. I believe it was harddrive room problem. I would tell Mandrake about 2.5 GB for installation which I didn't quite have on my laptop and on the desktop system with two harddrives the first primary is 4GB drive with nearly 2GB for Windows and programs. The second drive 30GB which is intended for raw video, music, and still phots for my videomedia projects. When installed on the first Kdesktop would not boot up or crash during installation. Second time it put some of the files and folder on the first drive and the other on the second. I tried another installation this time I put Linux on the second with 7B remaining and Linux booted up and worked just fine. Athough, justbefore that I tried doing the graphics card and monitor test during Xconfiguration but Linux kept turning off my Futura monitor. I walked away to answe a phone call when I thought I had click on configuration again but instead I finished installation. When I returned Linux booted up into the Kdesktop and I was there. I could do everything I first configured my HP printer which I had seen was a major problem with CUPS. On the first time I got it worked and printing beautifully. Current problem now is my modem is a winmodem and although many are helping to get it to work using alternative many others say I should buy a external "hardware" modem for Linux to use. Keep at it you can do it and Linux4Windows despite what hardcore Linux users will tell you runs quick and nicely through Windows FAT partition. I will get another harddrive and install a complete Linux on it soon. Hope this helps good luck.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Mr. Pena ,
Before you breakdown and buy a new modem give me a day to get my
instructions together and I'll try to talk you step by step through it as I
had the same problem with mine and it is an identical modem as yours
Actiontec PCI call waiting modem. The book instructions are a little
confusing, but was able to get mine working like a champ. I too got the
looking for modem and then modem is busy errors. I will reply later tonight
with the info. I'm also new to the Linux community and have to learn as I
go
but the collective effort of all has helped immensely. I'll tell you what
worked for me and should also work for you.

Well, I followed the link you provided me and wrote down the info for my
modem listed under WindowsME.

Logged into Linux under root. I am completely new to Linux so terms like
"terminal" and the like have no meaning whatsoever. Nevertheless, I did
figure how to get into terminal and typed in the first command line. There
I
saw the info that Linux could display. But when it came to cd /root and the
rest of the lines I had to type it I was completely lost.

I did managed to type in the setserialcommand but the link stated to
edit with "jed or a similiar editing program". I don't know if I even have
such a program on my box.

After all of this typing I went to see if anything worked and when I tried
to connect Linux told me my modem was busy.

Any further info is appreciated.

I know your pain with trying out Linux. I tried Corel Linux 1rst edition and I couldn't get it past the video card configuration. Most of the forum help I got from Corel was intolerant with newbies.I tried Linux4Windows but I only got as far as a half hour loading of the K desktop. I was informed by many users that Linux4Windows is far too slow, although it shouldn't be that slow, and I was better off with a full blown installation on a dedicated partition. I bought another harddrive, 30GB WesternDigital, and tried installing the full version 7.2 sadly though at that time I was using my TV as a monitor and I couldn't see very clearly the on screen direction to install. I bought my monitor now but haven't gotten around to installing it. I too am having the same problem with my HP Pavilion laptop. I finally got it going the second time trying to install. The first time it wouldn't accept installation and I had no touchpad control. The second after nearly three months accepted installation and Xconfiguration was able to recognize and configure my Trident Blade graphics card. The reall problem is that I cannot get past the login window. I can move the cursor around but I cannot highlight my icon for logging in and the laptop seems to stop and resume in regular intervals. I tried rebooting and but it just kept stopping and running without letting me login. Newbie who finally got a Mandrake Linux to install but cannot not get past the gate.
