 none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0

Clearly, it is wrong because there is a /proc/bus/usb and it contains

I should imagine the fstab entry needs adjusting, but to what ?
 Anyone got a clue ?

What do the latest LM9.0 have for fstab entries ?

well, this is not my machine with the printer, i can check that later, but i
have no entries at all mentioning USB in my fstab and i have a USB memory
card that works great. it is listed as a scsi.

i will look at the machine with the printer and get back to you.

I urpmi'd the package, I was told that it had a bad signature, and

signature was bad? Why would a package from tex have a bad sig?

the sotware manager now allows you to check the gpg sig to make sure your
packages are from whom the y claim to be. it is an extra security measure,
but you don't need it.

you have to add the creators of your packages to your roots key ring for it
to work. if you haven't done this, packages not from mandrake will give
this error, but should work fine.

if you are interested in PGP and GPG security though, it is a useful tool
for the paranoid (he says as he signs his message. ;-)

what their resellers will sell? And that goes _double_ for a monopoly.
M$ was taken to court, were they not? What did they do there, bake
muffins and played with Barbies in the sandbox? Was anything accomplished
 in that lawsuit?

you didn't read up on the trial? after bush put ashcroft in charge, the DOJ
decided to purse a harsh penelty. MS is no longer allowed to break the
law, for 3 years, and if they do they can't do it again for 2 more.

what if they still do? why we will send them back to court. harsh, huh?

did MS buy off bush? nah.

lets recall they have now been fond guilty 3 times. most importantly they
are guilty of not living up to the terms of the first settlement several
years ago. for this, the punishment is to spend money for yeas in court
dragging the case out till an administration you bought gets in.

the good news is that the market is doing what the government won't. 4
major computer companies are shipping machines bundled with corel rather
than msworks. linux growth continues. apple (one more *nix) is now as
open source friendly as they dare, and mac sales seem to be growing.
governments and companies alike are dropping, or considering dropping MS.

more important, the mindshare has changed.

MS was once seen by CEO types (and some techs) as a provider of cheap good
enough software. more and more they are seen as a tyrant.

ok, i have seen a few posts about PPC mandrake, but they are seldom answered
and few. i am considering getting a notebook computer, and i would rather
get a mac and dual boot Mandrake/OSX than get a windows machine. the
question i guess is is anyone out there successfully running Mandrake
PPC? and how does she run?

Hopefully, Mandrake wouldn't release with broken supermount (not after

FUD /fuhd/ n.

Defined by Gene Amdahl after he left IBM to found his own company: FUD is
the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that IBM sales people instill in the minds
of potential customers who might be considering [Amdahl] products. The
idea, of course, was to persuade them to go with safe IBM gear rather than
with competitors' equipment. This implicit coercion was traditionally
accomplished by promising that Good Things would happen to people who stuck
with IBM, but Dark Shadows loomed over the future of competitors' equipment

frequently with Microsoft, and has become generalized to refer to any kind

huddled masses, saying:

There's an article in todays edition of the FT
 inwhich Windblows says :-

 licence change was a mistake

 and,

Microsoft might allow families with more than one PC to use a
 single licence

It seems likesales of XP have not been all that good then.

It would appear that for the first time there has appeared
 a crack in the edifice.

not the first crack and perhaps not the biggest. the licence change was a
crack itself. look at it from their view: you needed to change to a method
of demanding a steady flow of cash rather than count on hype and new PC
sales. having merged the pro (NT) and home (9x) versions you suddenly lost
a part of the upgrade cycle. have to raise the price too. between the two
factors more than half your customers suddenly say they are looking
elsewhere.

even worse, hardware prices are so low, by the time you buy the OS and the
office setup, you have spent more in software than hardware. seems pricey
to surf the web and write a document now and then. remember more than 50%
of users almost never do more.

plus you have been in court for years, and despite millions and a few
tactics that make you look bad to the people who are in the know, you
basically come out with a draw. tough break.

after years of being told your security sucks, nimda basically kicks your
butt. so you announce a new security policy. the result? you look bad.
many a tech feels like the CTO of my wifes company, a fortune 500 company
told me he feels: we always knew their security was bad, but 6000 patches
later we get hit by bugbear. so what did those patches do?

after the first few customers fled, the snowball started. nearly everyday a
new company or government says they are going open source. and every
announcement makes a few more companies brave enough to try. soon you have
to give price cuts and incentives to companies like that aussie telco.
tens of thousands of desktops switching would be a hell of a blow. the
damn hobby software is now backed by companies like HP and dell and IBM.
plus it seems to be winning the server war. OSS powers the web, and the
latest reports say you have been padding your server numbers with empty
domains containing no web site. you only hold about 20% of the web server
market it turns out. damn.

plus you have made an enemy of almost everyone in the industry. none of
them can compete with you alone, but they all smell blood in the water now,
and they all want a piece.

still, you have 3 things on your side: money, massive user base, and
preinstalls. except the preinstalls are slipping, and your future user
base looks bad. systems are being sold at places like walmart with that
damn toy OS, and companies like HP and Sun are getting into the act with
low cost machines for companies. they even have an office suite to replace
yours, and that is the real cash cow.

then a survey by some universities says only 1.8% of pc users run linux on
the desktop! at last a victory! but it also says that nearly 20% of
college students use it, and even higher in tech schools. these are your
future customers, running the other OS. 20% maybe more. and a free test
drive is hard to fight.

time to take action, you change the retoric. no more calling it cancer, no
more ignoring it. we will compete on features, not price. but you know
that cheaper software that does the job good enough is often the winner
over featres. that is how your office suite took share from players like
Corel and IBM after all. and this software is more than good enough. in
many cases it is better. the big gun, FUD, doesn't work either. when
people can try it themselves and see, and they already know you to be a
long time liar, the FUD falls on deaf ears.

the last asset, money, is startiong to get tied up between courts, payed off
poloticians, dropping economy, and great ventures like the xbox. (hey what
is a few hundred dollars of lose per unit? you will get your market share,
right?) so what now?

now you have to compete on price too. throw 'em a few freebies, stall for
time. something will turn up, right?

 away Windows, here).

I only downloaded CD1 and CD2 (there was a thrid file with the extension
.ppc, but I didn't think I'd need this).

ppc is for macs. you want i586. also, for intel platforms version 9 is
out. might try that.

after burning it should not be a single file on the cd, but several
files/directories. iso is a package of files as it were. what are you
using to burn the cds?

it will be _much_ more stable assuming your hardware is all good. check
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3 for the hardware database.

easier to fix? at first you won't think so while you learn a new system,

have a look at http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,574450,00.asp as

first, a hint. don't send in html. only jackass microsoft users do that.

On Wednesday 02 October 2002 3:37 pm, Steve Ballmer did speak thus unto me:
 HTML

pI spend a lot of my time thinking about how Microsoft can do a better
job of serving its customers. I'm convinced that we need to do more to
establish and maintain broad connections with the millions of people who
use our products and services around the world. We need to more
 thoroughly understand their needs,

i agree. start by spamming your customers. i use linux, because, frankly,
i upped my standards. so up yours.

pFirst I should give you some context on why I am sending you this
email. This is one in an occasional series of mails that Bill Gates and
I, and periodically other Microsoft executives, will be sending to people
who are interested in hearing from us about technology and public-policy

and even people who don't want shit from you apparently.

pIf you would like to hear from us in the future, please click a
 href=http://register.microsoft.com/subscription/subscribeMe.asp?lcid=103
3id=155here/a. If you don't want to hear from us again, you needn't
do anything. We will not send you another of these emails unless you
choose to subscribe at the link above./p

great MS joins the ranks of opt-out bullshitters. and i thought windows
ME was as low as you could go.

pIn my career, I've worked at only one other place besides Microsoft. I
marketed brownie mix and blueberry muffin mix for one of the largest
 consumer products companies.

so you have always sold pre-packaged junk. great.

Even so, not every new grocery or drug-store item succeeds.

maybe they need an illegally maintained monopoly?

pSatisfying customers is what it's all about with technology products,

then how did MS's good enough strategy work?

And customers expect the same high quality and reliability in
computing devices and software as they do in consumer products.

clearly not, or you would be pan handling on the street.

That's why our customers still encounter bugs despite the
rigorous and extensive stress testing and beta testing we do. With
Windows 2000 and Windows XP, we dramatically improved the stability and
 reliability of our platform

and a lofty goal that was! from zero to... well, not zero.

pThe process of finding and fixing software problems has been hindered
by a lack of reliable data on the precise nature of the problems
customers encounter in the real world. Freeze-ups and crashes can be
incredibly irritating, but rarely do customers contact technical support
about them; instead, they close the program. Even when customers do call
support and we resolve a problem, we often do not glean enough detail to
trace its cause or prevent it from recurring.

this should help, the problem is they were running your software. after i
stopped running your software (3 years ago) those problems went away.

pThere are risks in offering this option to have software phone home

especially when nobody trusts you. with good reason i might add.

pAlso, customers may wonder what we do with their reports and whether
their privacy is protected. We use advanced security technologies to help
protect these error reports, which are gathered on a cluster of dedicated
 Microsoft servers

as secure as your other servers? i feel safer already.

pWe've been amazed by the patterns revealed in the error reports that
customers are sending us. ione percent
of bugs cause half of all errors/i./p

would that bug be IE or outlook?

pWith this immensely valuable feedback from our customers, we're now
able to prioritize debugging work on our products to achieve the biggest
 improvement in customers' experience.

well anything has to be an improvement over your past bend over and take
it eXPerience.

 Some 450 companies
have accessed our database of error reports related to their drivers,

is that the private data you mentioned before?

pThere's much more I would like to share with you about these and other
initiatives on behalf of customers, but I wanted to be (relatively)
 brief.

well your bloat shines through even by email.

It's done this 10 or so times, from everywhere from 15 minutes to 10
 seconds complete.

if you have an old cd drive you are doing the install with, it may not be
reading the final few packages. in the install hit ctr-alt-f3 (maybe f4,
not sure) and see what packages it is trying. for me it was xwpic, xmovie,
ytalk and yudit. start the install again but be sure those are not
selected. zsh and xmms may also be problems, might want to uncheck them.
install should proceed fine.

now here is the kicker, once installed and booted i was able to install the
failed packages. guess the generic install driver is not as good as the
real running driver. ;-)

you might also try reburning cd 2 on a slower speed.

Not in the case of Mandrake - 7.1 and 8.1 were problematic, especially
the latter. 7.2 was a release to proud of, as was 8.0, IMO. I'm
reserving judgement on 9.0 - seems to work fine on my office box, but
I'm waiting to see how it will do at home (8.2 wouldn't work, but I
managed a kludge by installing it over 8.0 and using the old kernel).

also if you use KDE, be sure software manager is your first choice. look in

I've been using wvdial on my LM8.1 box to connect to my ISP. I've not
been able to get a normal user account to be able to use wvdial. I
keep on getting the error message Device or resource busy. I can use
it fine if I su to root first. I've tried setting the permissions of
the device to rwxrwxrwx, but the permissions always are changed to
rwxr-xr-x when i use wvdial. I am pretty sure that msec is changing
the permissions of the device when pppd is started. Any idea what
changes I need to make to get wvdial to work for a normal user?

 for me, i just chmod +s /usr/bin/wvdial
but that's the most stupid solution!!!
 and a very insecure thing

you could always learn msec, and tell it to leave the permissions, but that
would require some reading up at the mandrake site and finding all the
files and such...

occasions, the CD was not readable on my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop. The
CD did, however, work on my desktop. When I put the CD in the laptop
tray, it seeks for approximately 15 seconds before giving up. I have
tried different CD media. I have tried using Gtoaster and cdrecord. I
have tried changing the writing speed. I have tried using the -dao
option in cdrecord. But nothing seems to make these CDs readable on my
 laptop. Please help.

are you booting to the CD? if so it may be the hardware, and the easiest
solution is to make a boot floppy to start the install. the readme has
more info on it.

Anyone who doesn't agree 100% with what George W. Bush says
or does, is automatically considered a terrorist or terrorist
sympathiser, and can be detained indefinitely without a shred
of evidence, legal representation or even visitation rights
  for his next of kin.

Don't Americans know the laws that govern their very lives?

Wrong, we have a bill of rights.

actually he is right. if they say you are a suspected terrorist, you don't
have a bill of rights. didn't you notice bush and ashcroft tossed it out?

(AP reports) that the military tribunals ordered last year by the President
would allow the executive branch sole authority over the imposition of the
death penalty and could easily be held in secret.

Counter to assertions by the President and Secretary of Defense, these
tribunals appear starkly different from regular courts-martial, said
Timothy Edgar, an ACLU Legislative Counsel. If, in fact, they will allow
no appeal to a civilian body independent of the executive branch - putting
the lives of defendants solely in the hands of the President - then they
will not respect basic American, and international, ideals of fairness and
justice.

The ACLU's comments were sparked by media reports that Department of
Defense regulations, which are expected to be released this week and are
necessary to define the scope of the Presidential order authorizing the
tribunals, will not allow defendants to appeal their sentences, even death
sentences, to an civilian body independent of the executive branch. Also
troubling are reports that the tribunals could be classified and held in
secret solely at the discretion of Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld or
President Bush.

i wonder if you install with another file manager and uncheck nautilus what
happens?

to answer though, i think naut is the assumed newbie friendly manager in

be gentoo and boot you to commandline with no gui installed and expect you
to do everything the hardway. :-D

yeah i have used the FTP server a few times, but it hardly seems secure
enough. guess i better look into ssh.

(best-before dating: is that like best used before installation?) :)

something like that ;-P

right, here goes again

i have a choice right now to run my connection sharing either through
mandrake SNF or a linksys router. now the router is ok, does the job, but
when i use the SNF on an old p90 i consistently get anywhere from
150-300kbps faster. despite the extra power draw i really prefer the SNF
machine. :)

here is the trouble. with SNF everything i do works just great. except TFC
(half-life version) which tells me there is no internet. i know the
machine works, cause i have gotten email, and downloaded updates on it.
but no games. any ideas?

not that i play more than 3 times a year.

well the file that customizes the panel can get all fubar. if so try
renaming it, and if all is well delete the renamed file. it is likely
.kde/share/config/kickerrc

you might also try seeing if kicker is simply zombied. hit ctrl-esc and
look for kicker. you might need to kill it. to start it again hit alt-f2

hope that does it.
