Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1983 NH CB 650 - need to change tires

2019-09-16 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you found cracks on the rear, check the front reaaally well, and
look for the date code on the tire. If it's old, get both!
You only have two tires, they're both critical to keeping you upright.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Starter Brushes keep burning out.

2018-11-04 Thread Kurt Nolte
If it's going to be a while for the OEM brushes, you can always pull the
cheap ones out, clean them up where they chipped, then use a file to dress
a chamfer into the edges.

It doesn't have to be deep, just enough that you aren't presenting a 90°
edge at the interface with the commutator. Hard edges like that promote
chipping and chatter.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Headlight mod

2018-08-07 Thread Kurt Nolte
I'm not entirely sure what the point of this would be. More light? Low
beams don't put it where you need it when highs are on. You'd be better off
with a quality light and a relay kit to run it off the battery directly.

It will produce more heat inside the bucket, which can cause issues down
the road.

If any of the tricks above work, I'd still plan on pulling and cleaning the
carbs at some point. If they clog up once they can do it again, and even if
the float doesn't stick you can still get chunks in the needles.

A good cleaning, some fresh o-rings, and a new sieve filter sock in the
tank feels great, and it's not hard to do.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Wiring front turn signals

2018-04-28 Thread Kurt Nolte
If I recall correctly, the front signals are wired as two colored pairs.
One wire will be a solid color, the other that same color with a white
stripe.

I seem to recall the striped ones as the running lights. They should have
voltage when the key is ON but not when that signal is on. Either both
solid or both striped should have voltage key on, but the others should
only have voltage one at a time with the turn signals.

If you're just using a meter, the turn signal lines won't flash. Use the
above method to separate signal from running lights.

come down in price lately, and they make a nice upgrade.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Long shot

2017-12-28 Thread Kurt Nolte
Any of you guys aficionados of Kellogg air compressors? I need to figure
out what I have so I can get seals and stuff for it, but the serial/model
sticker is loong gone...

And yes, it's bike related: this thing is gonna help me sandblast a frame
and paint a tank and bodywork!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Cleaning and Blasting Master Cylinders

I would not sand or oxide blast the part, but a softer media like walnut
shells or soda would be perfectly fine.

Definitely make sure you flush them out clean prior to assembly, or you
WILL have problems.

If you have more than one multi-carbed bike and already do your own
maintenance, it might be worth it. My bikes get a carb sync twice a year,
just because I have the tools.

True, a weak battery can cause a lot of intermittent and random problems.

I do actually recommend everyone run AGM batteries in their bikes, I like
their longevity and stability. Tenders are a good idea too.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 84 650 electrical problem

2017-09-30 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you now have no spark in any wire, I would guess that you have a problem
with the 12V supply or ground for the coils. I don't think it would be the
coils themselves, as there are two, and the likelihood they both fail out
at once is small.

The 650s have a known weakness in the fuse box and wiring to the ignition
switch.

Do you have a multimeter and a service manual? I would recommend putting
the battery on a slow charger, then turning the switch to ON without trying
to start the engine.

You can then work your way through the wiring harness feeding the coils,
looking for where you lose voltage.

Shouldn't affect your front signals then.

You can double check, but unless they are completely wrong _and_ your
fronts have lost their signal elements, I'd still be willing to bet that
you're losing your flasher relay.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Wiring newbie... Blinkers not blinking???

2017-08-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
If neither side works it is probably the flasher relay.

The stock front lights are dual filament bulbs, one for signal and one for
the running light. The front running light shutting off when you signal is
normal.

It is unlikely that you would lose all four turn signal bulbs at once,
especially with an intermittent failure.

Both turn signal circuits are fed by the same wire coming from the signal
relay and going until the turn signal switch. You can check the connector
at the left hand handlebar pod for corrosion or a loose fit. Do the same at
the signal relay connector.

Do you have a multimeter or ohm meter? You can use that to check the wiring
from relay to switch as well.

Is this a bulb or wiring issue?

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 17" rear wheel swap

I looked and looked for mine, no real luck. The offset for the shaft makes
it tough.

The NT700 swap works on a 700s, but I don't know how similar their
swingarms are.

If the swingarms are similar enough the NT swap should work. Otherwise we
are back to square 1.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 Nighthawk 750S Electrical Conversion

2017-07-07 Thread Kurt Nolte
Not to knock you or the project, but... I don't think you're going to find
the fun that will inspire you to keep going with that setup. Or maybe you
will, dunno. Four tired lead acid starter batteries aren't going to give
much range with a brushed motor, keep that in mind too. I don't know how
far you want it to go, but I can't imagine that setup being good for more
than 5-10 miles TOPS, and you'll be charging for a long time with it.

My own conversion plan uses LEAF battery modules, I have them laid out in
four blocks of 4 that I can connect in series to keep current demands down.
BMS, good sine wave brushless controller, I'm hoping to see a good 70 miles
highway range so I can commute to the office and back on a charge. As a
side effect of the layout it'll end up looking like I stuffed a Goldwing
engine in a Nighthawk, if I fab up some covers.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 Nighthawk 750S Electrical Conversion

2017-07-06 Thread Kurt Nolte
>From my own exploration for my 650, which is also shaft driven, connecting
the motor to the driveshaft is going to be a little tricky w/ out the
transmission. It's a fairly tight space, and any motor with some oomph was
going to be a decent diameter to fit in the frame.

Ultimately I decided that I was going to eliminate the driveshaft entirely,
and run a hub motor in the rear. There is a company called Enertrac that
builds one that is designed to be laced into a rim, and as an added bonus
they give you mounting bosses for a rear disc brake AND offer engineering
and design services with purchase for a holding bracket to keep the hub
stationary.

My plan is to build a plate to go in the final drive housing that will let
me bolt the motor to it, then run the HV cabling (I'm going to run mine @
120V to keep the current requirements down) and the COOLING LINES (because
they offer a watercooled version) down the driveshaft tube, which removes
my need to figure out alignment of motor and driveshaft and as an added
bonus will let me run taller rear shocks to get a little tighter steering
and more of an adventure bike look.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 Nighthawk 750S Electrical Conversion

2017-07-06 Thread Kurt Nolte
Welcome! I have a very slow going similar project with a 650.

I would recommend that you find a Honda service manual for the bike. It
will have all the gear ratios you're asking for, as well as wiring
diagrams, suspension information, and other useful info.

What batteries are you planning to use? What voltage motor? Brushed,
brushless?

On Jul 6, 2017 05:45, wrote:

Hi everyone,

I bought my first motorbike the other day, a 750s with a partially
disassembled (and probably broken?) motor.

I am a complete novice. I don't have a bike license yet, I've never even
sat on a motorbike before. Engines are black magic to me except the barest
basics. For example, I didn't even known until after I'd bought it that the
model numbers for bikes denote their CC displacement. Like I said, novice.
Electrical things I understand better.

Some have pointed out that it is quite big for a beginner bike, and quite
large for an electrical conversion. Oh well.

I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap donor bike to convert to
electrical on the cheap (junk forklift or golf kart parts) for light
commuting. But mostly, for a project.

I have a feeling what I'm doing is sacrilege to most of you, but, for
proper context, I got the bike for $20 total. Yes, $20... total. The reason
I picked this bike from all others in that 15 minutes of classifies
shopping is because... *it was $20 total*. It could have been any model or
style of any bike, I'd never heard of or been able to identify a Honda from
a Harley without reading the nameplate. I'm not a bike (or car) fan, I just
had an idea "I want to convert an old bike with a blown motor into an
electric bike" and then looked, and then found one being parted out. Jumped
right in. That said, I do love how it looks and feels.

The former owner tried to fix it up as a project bike but is old and
retired and has 3 other bikes and just wanted it gone, so he'd already
started parting it out. Exhaust and some other bits were already gone. So,
please don't bite my head off, I've already rescued it and I haven't a hope
of diagnosing or reassembling the motor. I can barely identify and count
which parts are cylinders.

I figured this is probably, if nothing else, different than what many of
you have seen before. So, hopefully I can trade progress pics for advice.
I'm pretty clueless.

My first question, so I can start to plan for a motor and batteries.. Any
idea how fast the tranny output range is, or the shaft:wheel RPM ratio, or,
anything for me to figure out the speed I'll need to turn the shaft? (I'll
probably throw away the motor and tranny and couple directly to the output
shaft if the numbers ballpark correctly. Electric motors have bottomless
torque, electric car conversions are usually started and left in 3rd gear).
If I have to keep the tranny, I imagine it's going to be a hell of a time
with a sawzall to cut off the motor side of things and find some way to
interface with however the motor spinning bits turn the transmission
spinning bits.

Here she is/was:

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1982 cb450sc nighthawk, what are my options as far as carbs?

2017-07-05 Thread Kurt Nolte
Wait, why can't you buy a new jet? They aren't unique to that bike, as long
as you know the carb manufacturer and the size you can just order them from
wherever.

Do you have a 450 manual? It should tell you the jet size. IIRC those would
be Keihin carbs, so you can look up your main or slow jet size then go to a
place like jetsrus.com (yeah, it's a real thing) and get them for $6-8
each. Even the real deal jets are in that price range, so you don't have to
guess at compatibility.

Looking at the fiche you look like you need a #115 main and a #38 slow, so
you can get them both here: hhttp://
jetsrus.com/a_jet_kit_street/honda_450_CB450SC_1986.html

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Charging problems CBX650E

2017-07-05 Thread Kurt Nolte
It wouldn't help low speed CHARGING, because you aren't doing any. At low
RPM the regulator and stator aren't producing the voltage necessary for any
positive current flow into the system; you're running off your battery.

Reducing loads will, of course, extend the life of a battery charge, but
most "drop in" LED or HID lighting kits produce terrible light placement,
and can actually HURT your ability to see at night.

There are some units designed to completely replace a headlight, optics and
all. If the CBX has a sealed beam style light you can very easily run one
of those, and I know from personal experience the light output and spread
is excellent, and the quality on the Truck-Lite branded version is high.

What Dave said. The regulators in older Honda bikes (and others) are not
set up for full voltage down low. They are effectively voltage reducers,
with no way to "boost" the output of the alternator.

OH! You lost the end cap.

I was trying to figure out how you lost the adjuster when the axle runs

Those are cheap and easy to replace. Make sure you replace both nuts, and
give the threads a good looking over too.

I replaced the whole adjuster assembly when I bought mine, because some
chucklehead rammed 1/4-20 nuts down onto the threaded shaft.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] 2002 Nighthawk 750 seems to miss at steady speeds.

2017-06-13 Thread Kurt Nolte
The tach is a known, separate problem with the tach itself. Don't try
relying on it for troubleshooting.

Good acceleration and good idle, but poor steady state, wouldn't be an
ignition issue I wouldn't think. I'm by no means a carb expert, but if it's
popping under steady state operation that sounds like fuel.

How many miles?

It was dumping gas into the crankcase and the dealer was able to stop that
issue by rebuilding all the carbs and syncing them and replacing the oil
and filter. It's starts fine idles fine acceleration is great. Just when I
am going about 45 or steady speeds I can hear it sound like it's missing
and the power seems weak for a 750cc bike. I also have a tach issue where
it jumps on then off bouncing around. I could have a bad tach or bad ICM
not sure yet. I'm thinking something in the electrical for the missing at
steady speeds issue. The bike sat for a long time under a cover in the
guys garage. Very clean bike looks new but suffers from not being stored
properly.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: 1985 CB650 Idle Mixture screws?

2017-06-04 Thread Kurt Nolte
I bought the needle variety. Less expensive, and for something I'm not
going to be using _constantly_ I figured it would be fine.

This is the one I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MSJ7E6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8=1

Seems well made enough, and it is a four bank.

You can get a two bank one and then just sync each carb in turn, paired up
with your reference cylinder (usually #2, if I recall correctly).

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 CB650 Idle Mixture screws?

2017-06-02 Thread Kurt Nolte
I invested in a 4 gauge sync tool. It's useful, and they aren't too
expensive. I usually made sure mine were in sync twice a year, since I rode
year round.

If the climate where you are warrants storage, I'd sync them when you bring
it out of storage, then maybe mid-season. It doesn't take long, and it can
give you a heads-up on potential problems that might be building.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 2002 CB 750 Nighthawk Shocks

2017-06-02 Thread Kurt Nolte
Not hard at all, at least if you have the center stand and can unload the
rear suspension. Pull the seat, a bolt up top, another at the bottom, and
remove.

The usual suspects supply their usual quality. Progressive Suspension has a
direct fit set that works fairly well, can't recall the part number off the
top of my head.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: New Nighthawk Owner 2002 750 Black

2017-06-01 Thread Kurt Nolte
No tach cable on a 2002, it's all electronic.

If your tach jumps about or acts erratically, it could be a dirty
connection, but it is also possibly a failed capacitor in the circuit
inside the housing. This can be fixed, but it's not a novice task.

X2 on the carb cleaning. You can try an in-place cleaner like seafoam. In
my experience almost every used bike can benefit from a carb cleaning,
re-synch and going over after purchase.

You can adjust the preload on the rear springs, but at fifteen years old be
ready to put new ones one. Progressive Suspension makes nice ones.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Battery suggestions?

2017-05-11 Thread Kurt Nolte
Does your current battery have a UB or YB part number on it somewhere? That
will tell you the form-factor of the battery, and you can look up an AGM
from there.

Giving it ~15 minutes google searching it looks like your stock battery was
a UB12A-A battery (Honda PN 31500-460-672AH ). UB and YB numbers are
usually directly interchangeable; a UB12A-A would be a YB12A-A. Searching
for "YB12A-A AGM" has pulled up a pretty good number of results.

My personal preference are the Batteries+ brand (Duracell/X2) or Motobatt.
I have heard the Bikemaster brand AGM batteries are good, their gel
batteries suck.

As always, since you don't have a verified fit, take measurements of your
battery to make sure the new one will fit in the same space, and have the
same post type/position.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] New Clutch Pack Question

2017-05-11 Thread Kurt Nolte
I couldn't remember the order, just that the outers were the only ones that
mattered. Been two years since I did the clutch, thanks for the extra info.

And yes, DEFINITELY soak them. I put mine in the oil before I started the
teardown, did a chain cleaning first, couple other basic maintenance items,
and they were soaked in by the time I needed them. Don't remember how long
that was.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] New Clutch Pack Question

2017-05-11 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you just bought an EBC kit you should only have the friction discs. You
will need to clean and retain your steels.

If I recall from my own clutch job, the outers are OBVIOUSLY different, and
the rest aren't order specific. Just make sure you alternate them.

Take your time, take pictures, don't rush.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Has anyone soldered up a replacement for the fuse panel on a 83-85 650?

2017-04-21 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you can avoid it, I would not put the whole fuse assembly in the
headlight bucket. Not only will that trap heat (which promotes fuse
failure) but it also will mean that you will need tools to access it, and
also re-aim the headlight every time.

As for aftermarket solutions, I favor the Metripack modular system. It
accepts fuses as well as micro relays, and uses standard automotive fuse
sizes.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Is a 76' CB750 SuperSport good for beginner?

2017-04-11 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you are handy and okay with doing extra regular maintenance, a 70s 750
will be more tame than a modern 750. It will be heavier and less well
balanced than more modern bikes though.

I started on a 750 Nighthawk, which is hardly a sport bike, and even at
6'3" I feel like I probably would have learned the basics better on
something smaller.

If you intend long trips, I would STRONGLY recommend avoiding anything
"cafe" modded. The bar positioning and the lack of any wind protection at
all will contribute to increased exhaustion at higher speeds. The
handlebars are not ideal for someone learning either, as they will
encourage learning bad habits and poor weight placement.

The smaller bikes might not immediately let you do long highway jaunts at
high speed, but they do facilitate learning quite well and are generally
very capable machines. They also hold their value quite well, so you can
buy, learn, do basic maintenance and still get out almost what you paid for
it when you upgrade.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] LED Bulbs

I've used an automotive flasher, sourced from my FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto
Parts Store, if you don't know the acronym).

You can find your relay on the bike and look at the end needed to plug into
it. There are companies that make motorcycle specific ones if it has a
connector and pigtail, or if the relay is just a 2 pin relay you need to
find one off the shelf to match.

You can replace the flasher relay with a solid state LED compatible relay

fair number of hours to put into it since I don't have fancy graphics
training.

I don't recall any small gauge wires directly attaching to the battery,

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Upgrade Recommendations the front end of my NH750

2017-04-01 Thread Kurt Nolte
There is also an eBay seller out of Canada that makes _very_ quality custom
lines. I've put them on three bikes now with no disappointment.

I'll look when I get home for which seller.

You send them the length and ends you need, color, and any unusual requests
like specific orientation of the ends (I've had short hoses that needed the
ends rotated 90° on the hose to fit) and it takes about a week to arrive.

You remove the baffle inserts from your stock exhaust and drill a series of
holes in them.

It reduces restriction, but also increases noise. Some folks take it too
far and it mucks with their ability to tune the bike afterward.

I've been calling for unisex bathrooms since high school. :p

But my brother is colorblind, and almost nobody thinks about those folks
when they color code things. Even worse are those individuals who are
blue/yellow colorblind or deficient; those are your go-to "safe colors"
because the only color blindness most know of is red-green!

Back on topic, I wonder if the "shuttering" of Victory isn't a tactical
move. Shut down the brand, wait five years for the remaining inventory to
finally clear, then revive it as a noncruiser line. Sport bikes, probably;
what else would they sell, with a name like Victory?

There was talk, after Polaris acquired Brammo, of using the Victory brand
to transition to making an American sport bike brand. Indian for the
cruisers, Victory for the standards and sporties that do better worldwide.

There was also the Victory rebranded Empulse for an electric bike
competitor. I had hopes that the cash infusion until the tech that Polaris
represented would give the industry a shot in the arm, but I can't imagine
Indian offering an electric bike...

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] No way the crush gaskets are coming out

2017-02-23 Thread Kurt Nolte
Are those the exhaust gaskets?

I used a pick, patience, and small, steady applications of brake cleaner
when I pulled the ones on the 750. The gaskets are "coked" in there by
exhaust soot, so they will resist coming out until you manage to chip a
little of that out from behind it.

Once you get that small victory, the rest follows suit pretty well.

Anecdotal evidence, but I'm 3/3 on those batteries leaking inside of a year.

I buy Motobatt branded AGM now, or the Batteries+ branded AGM if I don't
want to order and wait. They've both been WELL worth the price.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Bright Night Lights

2016-12-16 Thread Kurt Nolte
Truck-lite makes good stuff.

Downside for a Nighthawker is that all of our bikes have integrated optics
and replaceable lamps, rather than sealed beam assemblies. The mounting
ears are part of the optics, so the TL LED replacements don't just drop in.

I modified an older bike's bucket when I did my swap, looking like I'll do
it against for the 650 swap.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Bright Night Lights

2016-12-15 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you are looking for a little more performance from your headlight, step
one should always be to make sure it's properly adjusted. That should also
be the last step any time you mess with it.

You can also get a fresh bulb of standard wattage levels. Lamps degrade
with time and use, so a fresh lamp can be better than an old but not burned
out light.

You can also upgrade your wiring to the light by adding relays and a direct
connection to the battery. Use the stock wiring to control the relays and
heavy gauge fresh wiring to feed the light from the batteries. This way you
preserve your stock functionality but feed the light it's rated voltage and
allow full current.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Tire pressure

2016-10-10 Thread Kurt Nolte
Can they? Yes. It's a question of how much work and money you want to
apply.

You would need to find a wheel+bearing+ brake combo that would work with
the rest of the bike. Similar diameter, correct axle size, same brake
placement. On the 250 it'll be even harder, as if I'm not mistaken those
are still drum braked up front. Not a whole lot of options for front drum
brake alloys.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk 650

2016-10-06 Thread Kurt Nolte
The curvature in your control pods will not match a 1" bar, and they will
not seat. Additionally, your throttle tube will not fit over the 1" bar,
and the curvature in the clamps on the triple tree will not fit the 1" bar
diameter.

You could probably "make" them work, but they will not be very secure, nor
will they be particularly good looking.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Stuck bolt

2016-10-03 Thread Kurt Nolte
8x50 refers to the size. Find an M8x1.25 FLANGED bolt in a 50mm total
length and you will be good. I suggest that you look into a stainless
replacement and do both of them, since they aren't structural.

Though... 50mm seems long, for an exhaust bolt. Are you certain the part
number is correct?

Which raises a second question... Just in case he ends up destroying the
bolt, I was looking online for a replacement. The parts diagrams show it as
a UBS 8x50 (part #90155-ME5-000). It also shows that part as discontinued.
Does anyone know if there's a direct replacement available? Or does anyone

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 CB650SC Nighthawk front forks

2016-10-02 Thread Kurt Nolte
If you think about it, $200 for a quality pair of fork tubes is pretty
cheap. Buying OEM you're going to be in that range EACH, and buying used
will still put you in the 100-150 range for good condition ones.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 CB650SC Nighthawk front forks

2016-10-02 Thread Kurt Nolte
They aren't stainless, they're hard chrome plated.

You could try to have yours reconditioned, or you can source some
replacements.

I've heard good things about a company called "Forking by Frank"
http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/

I believe Racetech also offers some in the right size.

I plan on replacement when I do my 650 rebuild.

Ugh, just imagining going through putting it on and taking it off every oil

Totally not worth the effort for such a tiny weight change, especially one
down low where it won't even affect handling.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Weight of the centerstand?

2016-09-15 Thread Kurt Nolte
The center stand doesn't weigh much at all. It's pretty small, and it's
made of bent and welded tube instead of solid stock. One spring, three
bolts; there just isn't much there.

It's utility-to-weight ratio is AMAZING though.

If you're looking for performance improvements, I'd look elsewhere; you
won't feel it. Synch the carbs, make sure they're clean, use good quality
fuel, get a good quality fuel filter.
