2016-06-06 Thread ewun
Zip-ties through available D-rings, handles, straps and loops are very
flexible, cheap and strong enough (to avoid flapping), works wonders. I've
used them also to secure two bags - one on each side under the rear fender
high enough as to well clear the tire.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Nighthawk Seat Height

2015-12-22 Thread ewun
I have a Corbin on my 2002 NH750 and it solved my problem. I'm 5'7",
shorter legs, etc. I can't flat-foot both feet at a stop but can clearly
get both feet down on more than just toes or one foot down flat-footed with
just a little bit of lean. The Corbin does sit lower but the front-tip is
also thinner (less-wide), which helps. I would not suggest lowering as
that affects all kinds of things like geometry, and simple-stuff like your
side-stand. Oh, also - get boots with at least 1" soles/heels - and maybe
even more, that helps.

2015-05-26 Thread ewun
Not sure what you're running - but, I've got a 2002 NH750 with a Corbin
seat and the Honda OEM backrest DOES fit with the Corbin seat. I've since
taken it off, but while it's a snug fit - with the backrest bolted on, I
can (just barely) take the seat on off when necessary, without unbolting
the backrest.

I had my River Road tail bag attached to the sissy bar. It contains my

Sorry I wasn't more specific. Yes - you do need a specific NH750 mounting

You might want to look at this - I just got a notification in my in-box

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Front Brake Line Kit - 2002 NH750

2013-10-18 Thread ewun
One More Question - Hopefully the last -

- The Russell SS Brake Line is on (fits well), and a brand new fill of
DOT4. Very nice lever feel after bleeding well.

- Have not swapped on the EBC HH pads yet as I can't get the *Pin Pad Plug*
off
at the caliper, to get to the *Pin Pad Bolt*. Looks like a
straight-slotted screw, tried once but I don't want to strip it. Any
ideas? It is a slotted screw-plug isn't it? (NH manual shows it with
threads but does't describe it) Should I maybe try an impact wrench?
WD-40? (Hesitant to use WD-40 so close to the brakes)

I feel like such a rookie, thanks for your help.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Front Brake Line Kit - 2002 NH750

Thanks, great idea - being more precise. What I found is - there are two
different part numbers, and the part number changed over from 1998-to-1999.

From (1998) - 45126-MW3-671, To (1999-2002) - 45126-MW3C71; and part price
went from $44.44 to $41.57 (so definitely a different part).

I'm not sure now, whether it will fit or notinstinct is that it SHOULD.

form-fitting. I've had 5 Goldwings and also owned other bikes that gave me
more support, but the Nighthawk seat is pretty flat and therefore SLICK.
I've noticed when starting and stopping my bum slides around a bit. Took my
wife on her first ride on the Nighthawk and she found the same thing.

So.any of you guy or gals found a way to stop slipping around on your
 seat?

I really enjoy the Corbin - versus the stock seat, for a couple of
reasons:
- The 'Gunfighter Lady' style has enough room for me to shift in

- Takes about 500-1,000 miles to break-in, but once done - my longest
trip +/- 300 miles was not a problem

anything to adjust or that's in the way. I'm starting to wonder if my frame

Here you can see the latch hitting the front of the hook on the bottom of
the seat.  I can unbolt the latch but it doesn't have any adjustment to
move it up or anything.  Similarly the hook is straight and bolted tight to
the bottom of the seat so nowhere I can adjust it.

Here you can see that the rubber between the hooks is making contact all
the way across the seat so I don't see how the seat could get any farther
down, although there is a big gap under the rubber foot that is farther
back from the hooks, and the gap on the left foot is much bigger than the
gap on the right foot (right foot not pictured here).

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: handguards for 1997 cb750

Melissa -

If you're in the market for handguards and a light-ish windscreen, I
can't say more about how much I enjoy the Shoei FM-2 NOS that are
still on eBay. The eBay number is 170730394898 if you want to take a
look. I have it on my '02 750NH, and it's just enough protection
(wind hands).

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Shoei Windshield Pictures Stuff - Second Set of Pictures

2011-11-05 Thread ewun
I have a 15 mile freeway commute into San Francisco and usually ride
in 1-2 days/week.

Wind is certainly off my chest, now hits me at about nose level (but
I'm short also at 5'7), which is fine as I ride with a full-face
helmet. Really nice that my hands are really not cold anymore (was so
before even with lite-insulated gloves), because of the early-morning
SF fog. The fairing is not that big as affecting the 'drafting side-
to-side' much, but there is some. I just enjoy the freeway riding
more - it wasn't that I disliked it before - just felt a little 'beat-
up' after a 45 minute ride, hope that makes sense.

As I said before - for the 750NH is was pretty-much a bolt-on, jiggle
and adjust installation, maybe an hour - but I'm pretty anal about
stuff. If you have a black bike - it looks factory standard (except
for the Shoei logo). It's well braced onto the headlight ear-flaps
and handle-bars and very stable. Had to tighten one bolt after about
4-5 rides, and went through them all at that time. No looseness
since. Well engineered. Note: because it is NOS - it's made of
fiberglass and you can see that material looking inside-out...pretty
70's if you ask me.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Shoei Windshield Pictures Stuff - Second Set of Pictures

2011-11-05 Thread ewun
A set of after-market LED's adjacent to each side of the license
plate. Look closely at the pic of the rear of the bike - there are 12
LEDs on each side of the license plate frame (they look like nubs):

http://www.lights.skenedesign.com/P3_Features.shtml

It's an easy install, they provide all parts including connectors
(according to your bike), but it's not cheap. In my research -
California has this ordinance that specifies Blinking Rear Brake/Tail
lights have to have a decreasing interval of flashes within some
number of seconds, blah, blah - and they conform to that. My feeling
is that properly installed, they do increase my visibility to others
as driving lights and also as flashing brake lights. Checkout the
website noted above.

Yes, into clean installs - if you look closely at the picture of the
gauges/handlebar you'll also see an analog clock/watch mounted on the
center of my handlebars - also looks stock too (just above the center
nut of the triple-tree)!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: pegs/windshield

2011-10-30 Thread ewun
If you're still looking for recommendations - I looked at quite a few,
including the Rifle (NightFlight) which was my second choice, but
finally settled on a NOS 'Old-School' Shoei F2. There's a company on
eBay that has an inventory of Shoei NOS Farings that are 20 years old,
and even made of fiberglass. I have a 2002 NH750 and it bolts right
up and looks perfect with no mods - looks like it was made for the
bike black-on-black. Here's a link:

It's a 'tweener' that's not as sporty as a bullet - but keeps the wind
off your chest and also protects the hands. You have to like the old-
school look, but I figure you might as you have a NH! If you're
interested I can snap a couple of pics.

got lucky and found it new/unused on eBay for $150.

With the stock, I found myself sliding toward the tank regularly,
crowding the family jewels, so this is a compromise I can live with.

I'll probaby modifiy it with a gel pad at some point.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Washer Mod + Uni Filter on 2002 750NH

2011-07-17 Thread ewun
I did them both yesterday - the Carb Washer Mod and Uni (oiled)
Filter. Like Allen said, doesn't make the 750NH into a sport bike,
but definitely notice that it's breathing better and lot more
responsive on the freeway this morning. So glad it did it.

Something to note: Because I'm in California I believe there's
additional smog emissions equipment that has to be dealt with when
removing the tank and accessing the carb tops. Not sure about others,
but I had to un-do and move away for access - the smog (canister or
something), and the throttle cable and returns are also screwed-down
to one set of #3 carb top screws (and those two screws are longer than
all others). There's also a tank breather-tube (on tank, not petcock)
that I had to remove in order to move the tank at all. Probably took
me an additional 45 minutes - mostly because I was taking my time and
keeping track of what I did, so I can undo it easier.

Thanks to surfswab (Ron) for the push, Allen for the extra tips, and
Javier for his encouragement. I would do it all again - the
difference is noticeable to me.

And, if you do get rid of it, then et this E-Mail serve as notice to you

 Hi Folks,

Finally got off my butt and too some pictures (attached). Some info. about
 my bike:

 ·         1986 CB700 SC

 ·         13,688 miles

 ·         Got a front fork servicing 1 ½ years ago.

 ·         Engine servicing 1 ½ years ago (nothing major – more of a check
 since valves are self-aligning).

 ·         Oil changed routinely when in use

 ·         Engine runs like a dream

 ·         New Battery

 ·         Seat in perfect condition

 ·         Rear cowling is faded

 ·         Ride side (cover?) is missing.

 ·         Front tire good, rear tire needs replacement

 ·         No custom parts – all stock.

 ·         Bike has never been dropped while riding. Some minor scrapes
scratches from falls (not while riding – all lame-O moves in the driveway)

That’s about all I can think of. I live in CA (near SF). Any thoughts as to
what I might get for this?

 Thanks,

 Greg

 Hi Greg,

A little more info would be helpful.

 1. How many miles?

 2. Has the bike ever been dropped?
 3. What kind of shape is the paint in? The seat? The tires?

 4. Are there any custom parts or is the bike completely stock?

 5. Etc...

And a picture would be helpful too.

I honestly don't know what bikes are going for in the Bay area, but I would
guess (depending on your mileage and the overall shape of the bike) you
could get anywhere from $1500 to $2500. That's a wide spread because there
 are so many unknowns.

This might sound 'stupid' but it's not - it's real.  I'm happy to put
in the time to learn (more) all about my bike, but I've never even
taken my tank off (yet).  I've had my NH750 for about 3 months now and
learning more every day.  I've read and re-read the Carb Washer Mod
 instructions/pictures atwww.nighthawk750.com- it sounds pretty
straight-forward.  Could you/would you recommend that a newbie like
myself work though this at this point?  I'm moderately handy and
mechanically-inclined and very meticulous about things.  Beyond the
pointers highlighted in the instructions - could you offer any
 additional hints/tricks?  Thanks in advance.

(Worse thing for me would be to somehow disable the bike and I can't
 enjoy it on weekends!)

Market prices here in the south range from $1500-$2500 from half-way
decent to pristine shape.  I've seen some advertised in the
neighborhood of $3000, but don't know if they actually sold for that
when all was said and done.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Starter for 84' CB650SC

2011-04-14 Thread ewun
Hey Jim -

Just wondering - I also live in the Bay Area (Peninsula - San Mateo)
and just acquired a 2002 750 NH (19,000 miles in good shape). Would
you happen to have any good recommendations for local service/
maintenance shops/mechanics that are reputable and do a great job? It
would be ideal to have some references for the work that's beyond my
(limited) abilities (even with a shop manual). Thanks in advance.

 Silicon Valley in California
since gas is at 4.39 a gallon.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Cleaning, Polishing and Maintenance Tips?

2011-04-11 Thread ewun
Hey, thanks Graham. I was figuring it was going to be an 'all or
nothing'. I'll probably try tackling the flat side covers as they're
easy, the fork legs - I'll just keep them as clean as I canfor
now.

Guess I was looking for the 'miracle ointment' that would polish both
the clear and the aluminum at the same time!

Cheers!

Hi Eric,  I have a 2002 Nighthawk 750 also.  Mine doesn't have the
corrosion yours has but I have and have had other bikes that do.  You
can't do much about the alluminum that has the clear coat other than
sand it off and shine the alluminum.  I have done that on bikes and
it can come up like chrome.  Flat pieces like some of the engine side
covers are relatively easy to do but others aren't.  I did the valve
cover on a CB650 Nighthawk, just sanded the top and the beveled edge
and it turned out great.  If you have all the buffing tools to get in
the crevices, it would be easier.  Some Kawasakis of the 80's don't
have the clear coat and the alluminum polishes up pristine. Graham

How do you clean and polish and with what - the front fork legs,
engine side covers and engine top casings?  Seems there's a
(plastic?) coating on the aluminum so I'm not sure I can use an
aluminum/metal polish.  They look pretty 'crappy' and pocked-marked
from road debris, general neglect, and just 'stuff'.  So, it's now
  - part plastic-stuff, and part bare aluminum.

  Thanks,

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Insurance Coverage

Progressive. Very zip-code specific in terms of cost. Being it's the
San Francisco Bay Area (crazy drivers, metro, etc.) $190 - full

Farm, AAA - all higher.

[Nighthawk Lovers] New Guy (old guy)

2011-03-30 Thread ewun
Back into riding after many-many years and just picked-up a 2002 750
Nighthawk in great condition. Got it for many reasons - but mostly it
was the 'most current' version of what I remember riding back in high
school; a Honda 550 Four.

With about 16,000 miles on her, all black, her only real deficiency is
the well-noted problem -Tachometer went out several-thousand miles
ago. Over time, I might do something about that. Got her off of
Craigslist from a gent who 'retired' from riding at 72, with a well-
documented history of regular service and attention.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and looking forward to lots of
riding 10 months out of the year. Looking forward to hearing of all
the banter, mod suggestions, maintenance tips and riding stories.
