Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Riding With A Gun

2016-05-29 Thread paul annen
I'm going to chime in on this. About a month back I dumped my cbr in a sand
patch coming up to a stop sign. I did a superman over the handlebars, but
between my duty pistol and the kydex holster on my hip and my training I
walked away with a small scrape on my Palm and a few scratches on the
holster (wore a hole through my favorite shirt)... to this day I claim that
the holster prevented road rash and possibly bruising and broken bones...

[Nighthawk Lovers] 2000 Cbr600f

2015-12-22 Thread paul annen
Ok guys. I know I've been very vacant on the forum for the last year. Had
alot of stuff going on but I'm back on 2 wheels again! Picked up a
"running" 2000 cbr600 for a steal of a price and am slowly working the
gremlins out of it. The biggest regular problem is that the kid who had it
before me destroyed 2nd and 3rd gear, so I shift from first to 4th.
Inconvenience I know, but I can deal with that for now. I need more and
bigger lights, but that's happening as time and money allows my concern
for now is when I went to change the oil (after running it for about a
month) I pulled about 6 quarts out! When I put 4 back in (book says it
takes 3.5) I'm not getting the oil pressure light to turn off and it is now
tapping very bad (not an issue before I changed oil). Any ideas? How bad is
this going to be to fix?

Thanks guys, feels good to be home!
Paul

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] My grandson

I can imagine how scarry that could be!

Had something happen today that was both cute and terrifying. My grandkids
are staying with us this week and my grandson (who is 4) was begging for a
motorcycle ride. I put him off until evening because of the 90 degree
temperatures, but it finally cooled down so we headed out for a short ride
 around 8:45.

Stopping at a stoplight I noticed in one of my mirrors that my grandson
appeared to be looking down at the ground. As I pulled up to the light I
asked him why his head was down and he said something about the wind being
in his eyes. That sounded reasonable but I decided to keep an eye on him
anyway. I pulled out from the light and hadn't gone very far before his
head went down again. This time I was taking no chances. I reached back and
grabbed his pants leg and found a place to pull over. I jumped off the bike
and said, Hey bud, you can't fall asleep during a motorcycle ride! It was
 too late. He was out!

I called my wife to come pick him up in the car. I wasn't about to risk
riding with a sleeping 4 year old on the back.

riding more you don't want to get in a situation where you can't disengage

Note: the day before yesterday I turned my idle screw up/in because it

only changed the RPM a little bit, but last night it was suddenly idling

The place was called Power Motorsports at the time. This was about 7

started her up. Sounded fine, so I ran inside to grab my helmet (wish I had
stayed there with her). When I came back out a minute or so later,
everything was off. The engine was off, no lights in the dash, nothing! The
main fuse is fine, the other four are fine...Any ideas???
Note: My battery cables look kind of rough and the small gauge ground
wire(separate from the big one) looks like it's ready to break off(a bit
 frayed and old looking).

It hasn't been registered in years and over all I would rate this bike
as a 2. It has been laid down before but not by me, apparently some
previous owner didn't keep it up right.
The battery is shot and if you want to start it you should bring a
 battery.
I haven't started it in about 6 months because of the battery. I also
have aluminum ramps and a battery charger I will throw in.
I am not willing to negotiate. It is a piece of crap and I already have
an offer of $250 for the bike only. So don't be offended if I tell you to
kiss my ass with any dumb ass offers.
I do have the title and it does run with a battery that works.
Don't expect I will take a check or that I will answer endless emails
 about this bike.
Perfect condition it is worth $1500
It will take about $600 to make the perfect condition happen.
I would entertain a trade for a gun and nothing else.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Project thoughts?

2015-03-03 Thread paul annen
Ok guys. Here's the deal I have an 86 goldwing 1200, needs ALOT of
cosmetic work and a new fuse block (caught fire on me 8 months ago when I
last rode it), and tires. I can make it run again with about $20 worth of
parts, but it won't be pretty.

I've been wanting a dirtbike recently (dreaming would be the Aprilia
400cc), but I have also been thinking of building an off road/street legal
trike with the engine (florida I can keep it registered as a bike as long
as it's a trike), or I can use the engine and make a sand rail (would need
new registration)

Any thoughts?

I would sell the black one for $800. It needs carb work. I will provide
 a new battery.

I would sell the red one for $1400. It is ready to go but I would include
a new battery also. We can deal on helmets, jackets, , moving cart, etc..

Any takers out there? Any and all questions OK and answered truthfully.

*Subject:* [Nighthawk Lovers] Such a deal I got for you.

Deal of the day/week/month/year.

  I have two, TWO 1984 CB650SC M/C for sale. I just turned 79 and
purchased a new home in the north woods of Wisconsin – my “last home”.
7 acres... small spring fed creek that plays the music of the
universe for me... raise bees and a large garden...
 paradise for me.

Won’t ride the bikes much, and can use the money.

The Red One is the best, with 29987 miles. Runs excellent. Probably
could use a new battery; about 4 years old.
Always garage kept, all original decals. Windshield, saddle bags, self
cancelling turn signals, daytime headlight blinker, (irritating as hell to
ride in front of, I am told) brake light blink module, excellent. Sorry to
 see her go. *:~(*

I was not looking to buy this bike, but was looking online for
replacement shocks for the black one, and HERE SHE WAS!
Garage kept, dealer serviced, beautiful. *I am since divorced...*
 *perhaps
this was a (small) factor. ;~)*

The Black one has 34655 miles, and has not been run for almost 2 years.
Needs carb work. Just got a new battery, not installed yet.
Has been laid down, some gas tank dings. Rear shocks are sticky,
 “newer” ones included.

If I take them with me on my move and get them ready next spring, I will
be asking $1800 for the Red one and $1200 for the Black one.

 I
f seriously interested call or email me. Take them both for $2400. I am
moving by Feb 28th. They are in the back of the garage blocked with a
trailer load of $h1T, but pictures of some sort could be taken.

I figure the pouring and filling may be an issue, but maybe it could carry

The ride around Mt. Rainier in WA is one of these. The '83 NH 550 needs a

Factory they are jetted VERY lean, more fuel (to a point) is more power.

Kind of unrelated, but I had a modern 2.5hp 4 stroke outboard burn a hole
in the cylinder wall because it was factory jetted to lean, just wasent
ment to be rum like I ran it. Under More Investigation Simply Changing the
jets would have given me at least another hp. That's the only difference

Change all the gas. Still wouldn't start.
Swap carbs with recently cleaned set. Not very clean, broken choke
valve (plastic) cap nut, loose screws (found only after installed). New
fuel line. Still won't start. Not getting fuel.
Swap out fuel petcock. Still won't start and petcock leaking from the
lever. (Anyone know if this is fixable?). Back to original petcock but
changed the vacuum part. It was stuck closed. Now getting fuel.
Starts!! Yeah. Step back to enjoy my handy work. Leaking fuel like
crazy. Crap. One exhaust pipe cold.
Fuel coming from the rail. Dammit. Carbs off again. (We all know how
 hard THAT IS!)
Doing it right this time. O-rings are literally in pieces. Decide to
 completely rebuild and clean.
Looking great so far. No extra parts and two more carbs to put back
together. Now works gets in the way. Hope to finish Tuesday.

Any advice on setting up the linkages? Especially the two small springs
that link the butterfly valves. I am not gonna touch the factory set mix
 screws.

 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/engine-conversions-92/839599-formula-calculating-carb-size.html

So I'd check out the aprilla forum and find what jetting to use on that
setup with a free flowing filter and exhaust.

the flow from the twin 7mm is much less.

This scooter will do 102 mph with the 27mm carb, performance exaust,
80cc big bore kit, and a change in the weights and springs of the cv
transmission. That does put it at the 22k rpm...

I swear Aprilia is itilian for hey y ' all watch this!
On Jan 3, 2015 8:02 AM, Allen Thomas althomas...@gmail.com wrote:

In my experience with street racing the cfm flow of your carbs can
greatly affect performance both good and bad. For instance on a 350ci motor
a holly 650 will out perform a 750 in all but the most highly built 1/4
mule race engines. Because a 350ci motor can't flow that many cfm unless it
is spinning above 8k rpm. So on a door slammer going with the smaller carb
will give much better throttle response. So my advice is to do the math.
Figure out how many cfm your motor can flow at the desired rpm then figure
out what mm carb is appropriate. Too small of a carb and you will restrict
top end flow and loose top speed. Also there can be a lot gained on those
type of setups by playing with the pullies and weights for the CV setup. I
like the leaf blower idea personally. Positive pressure negates consernes
about carb sizes. Just be sure to jet for it and retard the ignition timing.

For some reason I can't respond to Joey's post...

Anyway, just thought I'd chime in. This is my dog and my ex. She was used
to being around running bikes and had ridden a lot in a convertible, so she
took to the sidecar really well. He took out the seat and put a dog bed
inside. He also took a doggie seatbelt (meant for cars) and attached it so
she can't jump out. Of course they had to have matching goggles. :)

At first he just encouraged her (read: treats) to jump in the sidecar. He
let her get out whenever she wanted. Later they would do it while the bike
was running. Then he buckled her in and took her on a little ride.
Absolutely no drama. The hardest part was convincing her to wear the
 doggles!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] A different reason to get an Electric bike....

2014-11-30 Thread paul annen
I would love a decently powered electric bike to commute on! It needs to be
able to get to 60 mph quickly in order to do one stretch safely, other
then that my 4 mile commute is 30 mph max and my scooter does that
perfectly! And I still have my goldwing for the long weekend trips... same
with an electric, commute on the gas saver, cruise in comfort. Why do we
need one bike to fit every roll when you can have one for each roll?
On Nov 30, 2014 12:46 PM, Kurt Nolte vturbine.po...@gmail.com wrote:

Allen, you're falling into a classic stance. Because an electric bike

Much like people dismiss electric cars because they can't go on long trips,
electric bikes NOW actually suit a sizable percentage of the riding
public's habits. A smaller percentage in NA, but include around the world
 to watch the percentage skyrockets.

 A new CBR600 won't get 250 miles (52+ mpg) of neck-wringing on a tank
either; why does an electric have to meet that standard?

riding. To me the CBR is more attractive. Electrics are limited to
commuting duty and city dwellers, or at least the ones that are affordable
are. When the have one that is equivalent to a 120HP sport bike that has a
range of 250 miles of wringing its neck, and costs equivalent to a gas
model, then I'm in. But I'm afraid they need to come up with a better
battery chemistry than what is available now to make that a reality.
Currently a bike like I just described would be massively heavy.

$11k? Not having to fuel and oil change the electric will make up that
difference in a reasonable amount of time. I imagine insurance on the
 electric is cheaper too.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Zero bikes on the power

2014-11-16 Thread paul annen
Never said it was easy, yes carbs are a major pain, and I've had to replace
my starter twice now but it is a labor of love. I was just stating my
opinion on The bike. Yes it's heavy, that can be overcome. Yes the carbs
are a pain, ride often enough and the carbs don't get gummy. Starter is a
pain, how often do they go out? (My first replacement was a rebuild that I
screwed up). The charging system, previous owner mounted a 30A GM alt. Off
the main crank so I haven't dealt with that.

Yes plenty of power to get up to speed quickly. Yes wind blockage is
great. Yes luggage is a great bonus. Yes it was designed from the rubber up
to be a long distance super slab touring machine and it does a great job at
it.

Yeti, not to say that the GL is a bad bike, but I wouldn't say is
maintenance free, in particular the older models. Also, they are not very
easy to work on. Carbs are difficult, if the stator goes bad (not uncommon)
your need to remove the engine. Getting the starter engine out and in my
GL1200 without removing the exhaust was one of the most difficult things
 I've ever done.

I've never ridden a PC or a GL. All I know about them is what you guys
say. Old Yeller has 40K miles now and has taken me the equivalent of back
to San Francisco since May with zero issues. If the NH could keep the wind
off me better and if it had better storage, I suppose I could just stick
with it forever. I don't think anybody thinks of the NH as a touring
 motorcycle, though.

I have an 86 gl 1200, and I don't think there's anything better suited for
me on long runs. I am 6 foot 3 inches tall and almost 300 pounds. The bike
is heavy (700 pounds) but low center of gravity. It can be a bugger to
pick up, but with proper techniques it can be done even by a small person.
The center stand is a bugger regardless of who you are and I only use it
for maintenance.

I say go for the goldwing, they are virtually maintenance free and will go
well beyond 100k miles if you just keep up on oil changes and tires.

 1. Carry the Nighthawk on a trailer behind the box truck
 2. Load the Nighthawk into the box truck

Moving to Atlanta several years back, I had a CB250 loaded into a 10'

Thanks for great explanations Kurt and Phil! Definitively air cooled

Phil, I'm not sure why you're equating EFI with a loss of torque and low
RPM performance. Though, if I had to hazard a guess, it's because EFI was
introduced to motorcycles via racing, then race-reps, then general high
performance bikes (Hayabusa, etc). All of these are characterized by high
RPM, low bottom end, pure top end bikes.

I'll grant that first flight motorcycle EFI was twitchy, too. Almost an
on/off switch at times: wide open or nothing at all. But it's phenomenally
better now. It's been the only thing available on Harley bikes (aircooled
too) for over a decade, and it's made near universal appearance in general
performance bikes as well, like the CBR250 (thumper, good torque, great
bike) and the WR250 (dual sport, thumper, also great torquey bike). Even
Triumph's Bonneville classics are fuel injected, though they have taken
great pains to maintain the appearance of carburation.

EFI isn't being mandated by anyone, but the market's desires for more
power and range, as well as smoothness, cold start performance, and
durability are all driving the shift away from carburetors. Add in that you
don't have to consider removing and cleaning your fuel system as regularly
scheduled maintenance, nor do you need to try-and-check tune it for
different climate or altitude conditions or for mods like exhaust or air
 filter...

 --

Carbureted, aircooled bikes have valve adjustment intervals as well, and
historically they've been shorter than those for watercooled bikes, or the
water pumpers just run the same intervals for consistency's sake. I'm not
really sure why hydraulically adjusted followers aren't more common now, at
least outside the high performance bleeding edge types, but it's not a
 cooling method thing.

Like Kurt said, water cooled engines have less variability. For single
cylinders (1 fire per revolution) or big displacement pistons, I can see
the need. But where the law is headed, and wrongly I feel, is towards EFI
where the variability makes a significant difference with puffs of fuel
 'mist'
delivered. I don't know of many if any efi bikes w/o water cooled.

The Nighthawk 750 imo does not need w.c, and especially efi. With efi,
kiss that low end torque good bye, and say hello to high rpm/compression
ratio/speed/hp/gas mileage. I just don't like 80mph being at the low end of
my ridable range. I had one efi bike and don't want another, without a test
ride and serious consideration (I had a lot of tickets with that bike,
only.) Without high rpms, they have throttle lag (compared to carbs) in
low/mid range, make you illegally speed ALL the time, and mine could not
stop (with dual smaller diameter discs than the Nighthawk 750.)

Nighthawk owners don't need water cooling, valve adjustments, or EFI.
Yet they run maintenance free like a water cooled motorcycle. It's a
paradox. How sweet it is! Those water cooled valve adjustments every 6K
miles cost over $200 labor. Who needs them? That is approximately the cost
of 2 tires and installation labor.

permit it. At least that's my perception.
