My co-worker who normally handles his Windows maintenance was out of town,
so I showed him the Linux Mint Cinammon desktop on my laptop. My (happy)
boss was up and running in 3 minutes. Additionally another of my Windows
challenged cohorts installed it on his computer last week; like a kid in a
sandbox.

The only difference that I can see between Linux Mint Cinammon and Windows
7 is that the Linux bootable ISO works well.

Now more technically, if the Linux ISO download passes checksum, etc and is
virus free, then a bootable (ROM) DVD is guaranteed to stay virus free; but
I suppose the host computer it's running on "could" eventually get viruses
somewhere on the file system. Will take anyone's thoughts on that.
  MichaelL

PS btw, I'm writing this email on Manjaro Linux ISO running off DVD, it's
an Arch Linux distro with added user friendliness

[nlug] BLACKLISTED- calling all webadmins, dedicated server compromised / sending spam

2015-07-27 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
My main client / customer / employer, www.GraceAndTruth.Net / Grace And
Truth Ministries currently cannot send emails because the server hosting
the site has been blacklisted.

I just found out that hostgator which hosts the leased dedicated server
does not routinely perform any scans since it is a dedicated server .

Hostgator has initiated the request for removing the IP address from the
blacklists and now that we've requested a scan to be done to remove
malware, they're supposedly tending to it.

Could you knowledgeable admins please point me in the right direction of
keeping the website secure and functioning optimally?

Ideally if I can have a list of steps to follow with estimated required
time to keep things running, then I can report back to management on
whether it's possible for us to handle it in house or if we need to switch
to some managed server plan.

Thank you kindly
  MichaelL

[nlug] blacklist removal / HOW IS SITELOCK FOR SECURITY?, ClamAV, Codeguard? / managed dedicated?

2015-08-06 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
I found on the cPanel that standard email security features involving spf
and DKIM were disabled, so I enabled them; that helped matters somewhat.
I've gotten a few notifications that 'someone' is logging into our cpanel.
One of those cPanel logins at 3am July 30th was supposedly the IP address
of Comcast's "security" desk out of Murfreesboro with all their contact
info.

The company hosting our dedicated server is Hostgator out of Houston. When
I contacted support 3 weeks ago regarding our blacklist and security
issues, I was told that being a dedicated server, everything is on us.
Asking further, I was.given suggestions of Sitelock, ClamAV, and Codeguard.
Jjust paid $60 for one year's worth of Sitelock protection. Hostgator
(when asked) installed and (when asked again) supposedly ran a ClamAV scan
for us, which supposedly took 2+ days to complete, which was a week ago;
haven't heard anything regarding scan results. Checking into CodeGuard,
looks like a useful site back up and restore service.

Am I to believe that Sitelock and Codeguard will get the job done as far as
security and recovery? Or should I be looking to go from dedicated server
at about $250/mo to managed dedicated server at $600+ / month?

What say those more knowledgeable than I? I'm thankful to get to ask these
questions here.

Also, regarding security, this is for the non-profit ministry,
www.GraceAndTruth.Net ; just want to keep the site functioning and email
from being hacked every day and blacklisted. It's all information that he
wants the whole world to know. A functioning level of security is
acceptable.
Thank you

Email (hacked on the server) is what got them blacklisted. Free sounds
pretty good for non-profits.

Re: [nlug] blacklist removal / HOW IS SITELOCK FOR SECURITY?, ClamAV, Codeguard? / managed dedicated?

2015-08-06 Thread Michael L
I'm thankful for all the input,

I 'believe' webserver and email is all that's there, so it crossed my mind
going back to just a "cheap" shared hosting arrangement for $5-$30 / month.

BUT, two reasons I don't know for sure that will be adequate are:
  1. I'm (obviously) not a web admin / IT pro, (I'm responsible for video
production, but I get "asked" other technical IT questions, so I go to NLUG
and all other possible venues)
  2. That video and audio is in the thousands of hours (3000+) and it is
being distributed online; that's
where this little organization isn't so little

The current workflow is to "link" to the massive video content in AWS S3 (I
guess you call that the cloud), and Vimeo and of course Youtube.

[nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-13 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
I designed a database on Lotus Approach back in '98 to run on a single
computer (off the internet for security) and it has worked for 17 years but
(IBM) Lotus stopped updating the app with 32 bit WinXP.

We're continuing to use it, but (DOES IT STOP HERE?) now we need to add a
2nd machine with the database synced on both machines across VPN / WAN.
-- IS THAT WHAT A LAMP STACK IS FOR? I believe the short answer is yes.

I feel like a 4yr old who knows how to call 911. Am I barking up the right
tree? Can those of you more knowledgeable than I point me in the right
direction of where a responsible adult can get us squared away?

Jerry P. from NLUG is showing us the ropes of his LAMP stack app that he
has fine tuned. (Together with a VPN) I believe a LAMP stack "should" meet
a lot of the need, but at 4 years old I shouldn't be making these kinds of
decisions. All I can say is I read about it.

Please advise, Dankeschoen,
 Michael

[nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-13 Thread Michael L
The database app runs a mailing list for DVD's. And I will say that our
current (soon to be former?) security strategy is to leave the single
machine completely off the internet. I guess that strategy will have to be
abandoned now to connect to a VPN? I understand the 'V' in VPN to mean
virtually private as opposed to actually private or virustually private if
you have a virus on one of the machines. Am I correct on that?

Re: [nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-14 Thread Michael L
You're not rude. I know my questions probably seem like I'm a 4 yr. old
who doesn't know much besides 911 (but since I designed a database 17 years
ago I must know everything about IT). I often thought a CRM solution would
be something for us. One difficulty is we have a 72 yr old (baby) database
user who doesn't want to learn anything new and in 14 years hasn't learned
to properly use what we have and now wants access at a new location. The
Lotus Approach app isn't updated past WinXP.

2015-09-15 Thread Michael L
What app would allow us to design an arbitrary interface to look like what
we have on approach? I understand PHP to be a front end for mySQL.
"Maybe" our user would work with something more modern if we can make it
look like the old.

I appreciate getting to ask these questions.

[nlug] LTO backup software?

2015-10-30 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
For those of you out there that use LTO tapes for data backup, can anyone
share some knowledge / recommendations regarding LTO backup software for a
SpectraLogic T50e tape library.

I was told about Amanda / Zmanda and I've run into Archiware while I was at
NAB. I need to back up USB 2.0 and 3.0 drives to LTO6 tapes. Currently
have CentOS installed for this.

Thank you
  M

To give a little more info this will be to back up archive video stored on
HDD's from a few years back. Once the archive is current then it will
just be 500GB / week.

I must say I'm thankful to be on the NLUG mail list; I feel overwhelmed by
all the info (beats not having a clue and not knowing where to turn).

Re: [nlug] requests for talks for this month ( tomorrow), December, and January

2015-11-12 Thread Michael L
I am interested in hearing all things database, especially LAMP Stack. And
soon I hope to be able to display a database editor built on Mathematica
called BestDB and ("maybe") also an accompanying data analytics program
called Best Viewpoints, by Ariel Sepulveda of Pronto Analytics in P.R.;
that is if anyone is interested in seeing this.

Re: [nlug] requests for talks for this month ( tomorrow), December, and January

2015-11-12 Thread Michael L
(Not that I don't have enough work to do, - since I work in video
production) I want to ask if anyone has any interest in seeing recordings
of any of the NLUG presentations. This could be accomplished with fairly
inexpensive gear, some of which I already have access to. If the presenter
repeats questions before answering them that would make for adequate audio.

Then some of the out of towners could also view the presentations. If
there is any interest at all, let me hear back and I will attempt to get a
minimally time consuming workflow together. If not recording the NLUG
meetings themselves, I can at least attempt to provide some (limited)
suggestions for presenters coupling audio with their slides and supporting
video editing with some of the tools I use.

[nlug] audio portion of video recording our NLUG meetings

2015-11-19 Thread Michael L
Just some thoughts (help from any avid DIYers welcome)-
   http://www.instructables.com/id/Dollar-Store-Parabolic-Mic/

I have to confess to not having been the most diligent DIY guy in history
(to put it mildly). Also, in video (and audio) production I live on
backups and redundancy, in case of ... .

Ideally ($$$) it would be good to have a wireless headset mic / body pack /
receiver with XLR cables and a camera with XLR inputs (again $$$). If we
had the ideal I would still be more comfortable having a (really good)
backup.

For good backup audio I am thinking of a digital handheld audio recorder (I
have one) inside a parabolic receiver / reflector.

[nlug] (easy) video recording of meetings, screen recorder with audio?

2015-12-08 Thread Michael L
Regarding producing a video of our meetings and aiming for ease of
production rather than cinema quality: If we have the right software and
if every presenter uses a computer that has a working mic / mic input, what
I believe would be easy to produce is a screen recording along with audio
and a separate high quality audio recording that can later be synced with
the video. Has anyone performed any screen recordings with audio and if
so, what app did you use?- SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

Read on if you like:
This link

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1229 says
Screencast-o-Matic can record video with audio
and led me to

this link
http://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/
regarding
SimpleScreenRecorder which
is an opensource video capture / screencast very fast and offers good codec
choices (notably x264) AND if I understand correctly also records
audio.SUGGESTIONS
PLEASE

[image: - - -] Cinelerra.Org Newsletter December 23, 2015 - Volume 2 -
Issue 5 News Newsletter

A new update was released on-line today. You are welcome to download at
your convenience.

Share with your friends, if you have any who care. And if you are
motivated to be helpful, let us know.

A new change creates automatic screen scaling.

FFMPEG has been updated many, many times since its introduction in mid-2015.

In this new update, many new FFMPEG filters have been added.

20 - Audio
53 - Video

Edit 4K full frame. Yeah, that is right. With the introduction of FFMPEG,
you can edit full frame 4K in Cinelerra, as created by those of us at
Cinelerra.Org. You cannot find it anywhere else with free software.

We have been working on a plan to integrate the editor within a
professional film and broadcast studio. If you are a professional and find
this direction interesting, contact supp...@cinelerra.org.

If you have any motivation to actually help with a better translation for
the language you prefer, please let us know. Since we only develop the
application from the United States, we only support English. But, we could
be motivated to work with you if you are so inspired. Otherwise, please
enjoy the program on your own. Here at Cinelerra.Org, we are not fan club
of amateurs or website squatters, we are striving to create a professional
caliber package, whether we call it Cinelerra now or something else, later
on. If you wish to read about how Cinelerra was created, read this website.

Also, due to the fact that FFMPEG is now front and center in the file
probe, the number of available codec formats is massively higher, both for
encode and decode. Broadcast tv capture is so efficient that I use it on
an old laptop. The
record/capture can scan the digital tv channels for program events and
automatically setup record captures, which can be uses routinely as a sort
of TIVO. DVD and BLURAY now are nearly a button press.

Yes, we know Cinelerra needs a lot of work to be competitive with
professional packages and we know what is required to bring it up to those
standards.

So, download it for free and enjoy itYes Virginia, there is a Santa
Claus.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and God Bless America.

Re: [nlug] Fwd: FW: Cinelerra Newsletter - December 23, 2015 - Volume 2 - Issue 5

2015-12-26 Thread Michael L
I haven't used Cinelerra yet, but I've used Lightworks, more to transcode
than to edit. Lightworks has a free 30-day trial allowing export to mp4
for youtube; exports to other file formats require a paid subscription.
Lightworks (not real strong when it comes to audio) is supported by
EditShare which made it available on Linux and Mac in (addition to Windows).

Will gladly hear about how it works out.

[nlug] presentation tonight? Video camera with SD card?

2016-01-05 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
The video camera I brought last month will be overkill; AND if anyone has a
smaller one which records to SD card, it will be easier to transport and
enable us to use a tiny pocket sized tripod (again, easier to transport).

We found out last month that recording to SD card is desirable, since we
can quickly copy content to multiple laptops / hard drives enabling post
production collaboration among those interested.

I could bring the same camera again this time, but probably should ask
permission after tonight.

Re: [nlug] Recommendations on buying laptop with preinstalled Linux

2016-03-19 Thread Michael L
Suggestion from a nonexpert nonpoweruser (me): search Dell.com for Linux
laptops and click on their "Chat With Expert Now" for more info.

Suggestion from nonexpert NLUG attendee (me): searching startpage.com for
"Linux Mint download" showed this link-
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Linux-Mint-17252.shtml
- download and burn live 64bit ISO to a DVD and test used laptops to see if
it will boot from Linux DVD. If it boots and the price is right, you have
a winner.

One reason I ask is because I have a co-worker whose time gets wasted by
supporting (two older) Windows users. If I can show him a very low
maintenance Linux (maybe Mint 17) system that saves lots of trouble, I
think he'd like that idea.

One (older) Windows user surfs the web and answers emails; the other just
surfs the web.- Nothing else. Neither user has the time to learn anything

Re: [nlug] Talk ideas for April, May, June, July 2016?

2016-04-08 Thread Michael L
NAB in Vegas meets 3rd week in April this year (usually 2nd week), SO it
seems that I will be able to attend NLUG this month after all, with video
camera in hand.

How about Andrew doing a repeat of last month's talk, this time on video?
If anyone is interested, I "could" attempt to demo a capable Wolfram
Mathematica based database app (RUNS ON LINUX, MAC or WIN, or RaspPi, or
Intel Edison), although I've only tested it on my least favorite OS,
Windows.

Re: [nlug] Talk ideas for April, May, June, July 2016?

2016-04-14 Thread Michael L
I would be interested in seeing a presentation on all things video,
streaming, video conferencing, screen capture with audio, etc.

I have other things I'd like to see but will have to think on how to phrase
the questions to avoid sounding annoyingly uninformed. If no other
presentations come to mind, I'm always generally interested in how Linux
can curb / control / cut IT costs for small (and not so small)
organizations.

Re: [nlug] Talk ideas for April, May, June, July 2016?

2016-05-02 Thread Michael L
"I" (being a slow learner of IT) would be glad to video record and share
with the whole Linux community Tilghman's best rendition of all things
Linux Server AND a screen shot repeat of Howard's FirewallD presentation
(no physical equipment needs to be schlepped to campus, just screen shots
of the process will do). Tilghman's replacement of his old server a couple
years ago was the first NLUG meeting I attended- it floored me.

If anyone is familiar with all the development tools on Knoppix Linux and
the penetration testing tools of Kali Linux, I would be happy to be a
camcorder toting fly on the wall. If anyone wants to demo the capabilities
of the Raspberry Pi- I'm all ears (and camcorder).

Since I do video production, it will come in handy having other options to
play back audio and video.

Since the Pi is so small I was wondering what is the smallest most mobile
video screen available for the RPi3 and can I run the whole thing, screen
and all off a 12v cigarette lighter outlet?

[nlug] Video of Jo Rhett's talk

2016-05-11 Thread Michael L
I'm sorry to say that I only had one camera and one audio recorder last
night, BUT it did record and we got strong audio. The camera iris was more
tuned in to projector so it looked a bit dark on presenter

See link below for a low bit rate (2200kbps) mp4. I have a much higher bit
rate file which is over 10GB to put on youtube. If anyone has any
suggestions for improvement let me know (before we put it on youtube)- this
was a $200 Canon Vixia and a $100 TASCAM digital audio recorder.

Glad it worked.

[nlug] (out of country IT recruiter in Nashville?

work out the visa related details?

[nlug] RPi, Mythbuntu, TV control center / recorder?

2016-05-13 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
Since I work in video production, being able to build my own TV recording
and control gadget is of particular interest to me. And since I know
nothing about Linux but would like to learn, this sounds like the ideal
starting point.

Can anyone can tell me what you would buy in addition to the latest RPi to
build your own remote control entertainment center that also allows
capturing of TV data, i.e. recording of video? Does the Arduino or Beagle
Bone have anything to contribute?

Thank you

[nlug] backups vs archives?

2016-05-17 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
Maybe most of you IT pros know this- At NAB in Las Vegas last month I
found out to my dismay that when it comes to backup and archive software,
there is a (pricey) difference.

I was looking at Archiware P5 at close to $1000 trying to weigh whether
it's the backup software for our Spectralogic T50e LTO deck, thinking and
assuming that back up and archive were the same thing. I found out that
the archive software price is over $4000 which includes backup software for
free and $650 annual support fee. XenData just started supporting the
Spectralogic T50e; not sure of the price on that yet.

Can anyone tell me other necessary useful money saving info? I was told
(or sold) that LTO tapes hold out for 30 years. Is that correct?

Thank you
 M

[nlug] talk this evening? (video?) / last month's video helpful?

2016-06-14 Thread Michael L
If there is a talk this evening? It's the busiest week of the year for
me. I doubt I can make it to record video; the best I can "try" to do is
hand the camcorder and audio recorder to someone else. I'm in
Hendersonville.

Did anyone get any use from the video of last month's presentation?
Working in video production, I'm not real happy with the picture quality
myself; will take suggestions for improvement.

Regarding streaming it live- I don't know how to get quality audio live
without a wireless mic ($). Maybe someone has some audio expertise on how
to accomplish that cheaper.

[nlug] security / hosting question for webadmins- Joomla / Rackspace

2016-06-25 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
Last year our Joomla website was hacked and blacklisted while hosted on
hostgator, no help from hostgator in resolving anything as it was a
non-managed dedicated server.

One NLUGger gave us several suggestions for other hosts; we went with a
managed dedicated server at (public cloud host) Rackspace for $800+ per
month, which includes a firewall; it got us off the blacklist.

I was recently warned by a WordPress aficionado / IT consultant that Joomla
websites are being hacked left and right and I would like to know of any
suggestions from the NLUG group:
1) Who likes what website platform and can a Joomla site be migrated
over? and
2) Does anyone have confidence in other managed dedicated server hosts for
less money?

Thank you kindly
  M

Re: [nlug] home labs on the cheap

May I ask, those of you who do this at home, are you mostly IT staff /
pros? Do you do this at home for fun / convenience / cost savings / testing
   or "all of the above"?

Being able to conveniently / easily create VM's is something I'd like to
know how to do for home and small business office use (and this is the part
of the reason I started attending NLUG). So this is achievable for just a
few hundred bucks?

[nlug] Food for AWS thought please

2016-08-10 Thread Michael L
Everyone,
I am attending the AWS summit in NYC tomorrow.
My objectives (that I can think of) are:
1. Getting video content out to as many people as possible (as easily as
possible)- Currently using S3
2. Seeking out ways to make computer user support easier (supporting
users who know nothing and don't want to know anything except they "just
want it to work"). My colleague does a good job of supporting these users'
Win 7 machines- I want to make his job easier.

Suggestions for what questions to ask appreciated.

Thank you, will check in to it.

The video is close to 4000 hours worth, but not very heavily trafficked.
Right now we have it on YouTube and Vimeo, and linked to the site via S3.

I am sorry it is a bit of a late notice, but this is sure to be a very
interesting talk.

I had the honor of meeting him at the TEMA Auxcom planning committee.
It is amazing the places David Wilson gets into.

I suppose him being a Radio Engineer for 40+ years does that.

[nlug] 4Jobseekers / newcomers / Nov. Meeting

2016-10-11 Thread Michael L
Just an idea / suggestion:

Since we had 1 or 2 jobseekers this evening and we don't have a topic set
yet for November meeting, if any jobseekers feel they would like to present
some of their Linux experience and skills on video, maybe it would be
useful for the job hunt. If nothing else, it may be beneficial for those
of us less experienced.

I may be able to assist with audio and video after Oct.24th if anyone wants
to put something together before November meeting.

[nlug] Joomla website help please, will pay USD$

2016-10-15 Thread Michael L
Hello NLUG,
My co-worker made a website update of a module / article that listed TV
times. This made it larger and made our video player disappear.

If someone on the list knows Joomla (or knows someone that does) and can
tell us how to restore our video player, will be appreciated, will pay
USD$. Local help is nice, but this should be solvable online. Thank you.

[nlug] "speeding up" Win10 (and Linux too?)

2016-11-01 Thread Michael L
For lightweight portability reasons (and it's my favorite color) I bought
an HP Stream laptop a few months back for web browsing. I think it was
$129, Intel Celeron, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage (I guess this is 32GB SSD?).
Also I do video editing/rendering and was advised early on to keep video
computing gear off the internet.

The system seemed useful at first; didn't take long for it to slow down to
almost useless. I noticed via the control panel that I can turn off
certain programs and since I'm a Firefox user, off went Internet Explorer
and all of a sudden it runs great. I don't remember being able to do this
in previous versions of Windows, couldn't uninstall MS Office trialware to
save my life; now I think it's off.

I'm guessing Linux is way more flexible in being able to turn off and
uninstall programs. Maybe I'll be a more regular Linux user soon.

Re: [nlug] [OFF-TOPIC] anybody had to recover a Windows 10 system yet?

2016-11-26 Thread Michael L
(Confession: I haven't read through the above links)
So in hindsight, what should a nonIT person like me do in the way of back
up to "make things easier" for my nonIT co-workers to support even less
knowledgeable users in the event of system problems for 2 Win7's in one
location, 3 Win 10's in another, and a couple of Win7/10's in a 3rd?
Should I get a sufficiently large HDD (maybe mirrored) with enough space to
back up all systems whenever I'm on premises?
Should I venture toward some interconnecting hardware/NAS/router in each
location with a (mirrored) HDD and schedule Win backup to go to town
daily? On one centally important Win7Pro system I currently have Win
backup doing a daily of critical data and some Win restore data.
Where does PowerShell (or equivalent) fit into the mix? What about
Clonezilla?

I think that'll be enough questions from me for now. And maybe we can pay
Dru or someone else local to come set things up for us if it's too much for
my nonIT skillset.
I'm most thankful to be on this email list instead of in the dark.

I can more likely assist with tear down than with setup. I have some
things to tend to hopefully 9am or before, but that may be more optimistic
than realistic. Will try to make it to install fest close to 10.
