Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new
worm on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where
its only action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the
following
message:
Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody
hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too.

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

RE: Denying TS Access to admin

2001-08-29 Thread Marc Neiger

Hi,

It seems like my question raised more issues than answers :-)

The TS is going to be in a DMZ and accessible somehow from the internet. For
security, I'd like to restrict access so that it can not be administered if
you do not have physical access, and so, I want to deny TS access to
administrators. Maybe someone can come up with a better principle ?

As for what I tried, it is fairly simple, I tried fiddling with the
permission tab in the RDP connexion, trying to deny access to admin total
control or also trying individual rights in the advanced pane. Maybe I
wasn't able to find the proper combination.

Thanks,

and I get the firts setup screen in win2k after the file copy reboot they
stop working. I have updated the BIOS and can find nothing on compaq's

Why dont
you want to use WINS, it would solve you problem?

You can
use LMHOSTS files as a replacement.

There are
a few issues with running the logon scripts. How many DCs? If more than one are you sure the logon script
exists on all DCs? On the Win 9x clients are they using the windows login
first? If so logon scripts wont run. Those clients must bypass the Windows
logon when booting up, and then when they validate against the VPN server it
will prompt them to logon , and run the logon scripts.

I'm not sure I would say that the tool from MS locks it down really tight
by itself. Russ Cooper of NTBUGTRAQ fame (infamy?) did a critique of the

doesn't do everything.

Hi,

It may be very simple But I am missing some
thing. When I want to add second controller in a domain I get the error message

name and password is opened. I tried all possible accounts but without success.
I am tha local and domain administrator of these

Just for test purpose I tried to add the same server as sub/child
domain, and it was successful.

But when I tried to remove that sub domain I get reply

LMHOSTS can work but as said before can be a big nightmare. I have 2 DC's and yes I am doing replication for the logon scripts and yes it is working. Just tried again on a 95 client without login in to 95 and when I made the VPN connection the logon script did run.

Now on the next little bit for that one, what about my W2K clients that have to logon to be able to use the machine? How do I get the logon script to run for them?

As log as the logon script will run I really do not care about browsing. None of the people would have a need to browse as long as the logon script ran.

Why don't you want to use WINS, it would solve you problem?

You can use LMHOSTS files as a replacement.

There are a few issues with running the logon scripts. How many DC's? If more than one are you sure the logon script exists on all DC's? On the Win 9x clients are they using the windows login first? If so logon scripts won't run. Those clients must bypass the Windows logon when booting up, and then when they validate against the VPN server it will prompt them to logon , and run the logon scripts.

install Linux, and set up sendmail with IMAP, there are web interfaces

exchange on a real server. You can get a Proliant pro200 server really

Hi,

Under W2K Server; does anybody have some smart idea about how to deny
Terminal Services access to administrators while allowing regular users ?

If I somehow deny access to the administrator group, I end up with access
being denied to all or even the TS logon process impossible through some
secondary effect.
I want to be sure that whatever happens the Admin logs on the physical
console

40 hours OT in a month seems really extreme.

I knew getting into the game long hours and weekends were part of the deal.
And little appreciation is the other benefit.

Like some of the others, my boss knows what I am doing for the company, and
gives me a lot of room time wise. If I drag myself in late a few days, she
doesn't worry about it. If I knock off an hour early here and there, that's
cool too. As long as the ship is sailing, I have a lot of flexibility.
Officially, no one else in the company has to know about it. I put in my
more than my fair share of time, and everyone realizes that. It all boils
down to how tight you are with your boss.

Please read the page

hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too.

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

Hi,

Under W2K Server; does anybody have some smart idea about how to deny
Terminal Services access to administrators while allowing regular users ?

If I somehow deny access to the administrator group, I end up with access
being denied to all or even the TS logon process impossible through some
secondary effect.
I want to be sure that whatever happens the Admin logs on the physical
console

thanks in advance,

RE: Denying TS Access to admin

2001-08-29 Thread Correa, Andre

This comes from an earlier email in this list on how to add additional users
to log in to WIN2K Terminal Server in remote admin mode.

-
Open Terminal Services Configuration (it's in Administrative Tools)
In the command pane (the left-hand pane of the MMC console), click on
Connections.
In the right-hand pane, you'll see an icon representing a connection (a hard
disk atop a network connection) and the words RDP-Tcp, tcp, and
Microsoft RDP 5.0. Double-click the icon to bring up its Properties
dialog, or just right-click the icon and choose Properties. You'll see a
property page labeled RDP-Tcp Properties.
Click the Permissions tab.
Note that right now, the tab shows only the System account and the local
Administrators group. Add any person or group that you like, and they'll be
able to log onto the server via Terminal Services
---

My guess is if you removed the Domain Admins from the local admin group on
the Terminal Server, and included the Domain Users group into the
Permissions Tab, you should be good to go. Create a local admin account, or
alternatively add one user account to the local admin group, and if you want
to, you should be able to deny access for that account in the permissions
tab in Terminal Services Configuration. That way the one account that can
administer the server, can only do so from the console.

Again, this is theory, as I cannot test this out, but I am sure one of the
incredibly bright and professional individuals who I am happy to call
colleagues will be able to find any holes in my advice. I hope this helps
you, and I apologize if I offended you with my comments, I was just trying
to be clever.

RE: User List

2001-08-29 Thread Blackmer, Charlotte, ITD

When I saw the original question, I thought That man needs to try the
30 day eval of Hyena.. Not only will Hyena give a nicely printed out
list of the users, it can dump that info to a tab-delimited file and
you can bring it into Excel and massage the info easily. Not commercially
affiliated, just a very satisfied customer. Try it! You'll like it!

(It's valuable for when the boss says, Who has access to X share or
Who's on the admin lists in Y domain.)

We have real copies of Hyena - it's highly useful and very attractively
priced - but thanks all for their info (including Kevin for this tip) since
I
haven't yet managed to make Hyena categorize my workgroup web servers.

Any of the network admins or accounting. If you have no physical proof of purchase, such as a paid invoice,
you don't own the license. This is why it is extremely important to keep
good records of all licensed software that you manage.

RE: OT E-Mail Disclaimers

2001-08-29 Thread Les Bessant

Lawyers seem to like them. The theory is that if a message says something
that the company would wish to disassociate itself from, the disclaimer[1]
gives some basis for this. I remain unconvinced that it would actually stand
up in court[4]. After all, we don't attach disclaimers when we talk on the
telephone, snail mail leaving the office (while all mail leaving the office
is supposed to be checked by a Partner, this is a procedure that can be
circumvented) does not contain a load of legal tosh

It all started with faxes. For some reason it was deemed necessary to put a
if we sent you this by mistake you must forget you ever saw it and shoot
yourself immediately tag on the bottom. When we started using email,
various PHBs thought we should do the same with email[5]. Then there was the
case where an employee of one mumble insurance company said something or
other in an email about another mumble insurance company, and the second
company sued for libel, and thanks to the UK's libel laws[6] panic set in...

So we have one. I don't think it serves any real purpose other than
satisfying the desires of PHBs to have a disclaimer because everyone else
has one. They're mostly harmless, so long as they don't get too long.

[1] Like mine[2]
[2] It wasn't my idea[3]
[3] I resisted for as long as possible
[4] Depending on local laws
[5] Why? If you send a letter to the wrong address you don't put a label in
saying if we were so dumb as to post this to the wrong place, feed it to
the dog, do you?
[6] Better than the lottery...

RE: What do you get for Over Time

2001-08-29 Thread Blackmer, Charlotte, ITD

I feel your pain :-/

The last few months of my last job, thanks to staff turnover, I
was regularly putting in 60-80 hour 6-day weeks and was on call
(with an automated Tivoli system that never slept) when I wasn't at
the office for about five weeks straight.

I might have you beat in that during the one period I was down to about
a 50 hour week (after major project deadlines had been met and the
new staff was up to better speed), I got told, in the form of an
official complaint from my boss to my file, that I was unwilling to
work overtime and weekends.

Yes, I *had* been entering all those hours in our time system.

I did get offered emancipation in the form of a package. I took
it. Although at that point I think I would have left without it
since I had some money in the bank. It really added insult to
injury. (There was over 100 percent turnover in that group in a
year's time. I'm sure you are *all* wondering why ;-) ;-) ;-)

Now if I stay till 7 pm to deal with some issue (emergency reboot,
change, what have you), my boss is generous with the praise and the
comp time. (No chance of bonuses or stock options in my current
gig, but that's ok.)

I
agree with the majority on this one. Disclaimers are pretty obnoxious.Yet
I was asked to implement one. However, I don't think the reason for most
organizations using disclaimers it to completely cover their a$$ in a legal
situation. I would imagine it's just one more thing an organization can do to
help. There are so many loopholes out there that everyone has to be sure to
cover all bases. If one didn't have a disclaimer, a defending attorney would
probably use that fact in their argument..."My client was unaware that the plans
for the next neutron bomb were confidential and not to be forwarded to friends
and family overseas."

  obnoxious.Yet I was asked to implement one.However, I don't think
the reason for most organizations using disclaimers it to completely cover
their a$$ in a legal situation. I would imagine it's just one more thing an

Not quite sure what you mean by this:
Especially since this one is originated in Ireland, but the list is hosted
in the US!
Are you saying that if a disclaimer (legal or otherwise) originates from
outside the US it's not valid?

Or are you saying that because the list is hosted in the US, that American
law takes precedence?

Hi,

That's right, but what was most surprising in my test is why would it be
necessary for the admin group not to be denied access for regular user to
log in ?
It was pretty odd : if I deny access to the admin group, when I try to log
on wint TS client, the logon window is not pre opened, it waits for
ctrl-alt-del which I can, of course, not press !

 Hi,

Under W2K Server; does anybody have some smart idea about how to deny
Terminal Services access to administrators while allowing
 regular users ?

If I somehow deny access to the administrator group, I end up
 with access
being denied to all or even the TS logon process impossible
 through some
 secondary effect.
I want to be sure that whatever happens the Admin logs on the physical
 console

OT: Iomega Ditto Max

2001-08-29 Thread Sean Martin

Out VP came to me with an Iomega Ditto Max (Model #IO1000-PX) that his
sister gave to him. It's an external backup drive that accepts an Iomega
Ditto Max cartridge (with FlashFile). Tape capacity is 1.5/3Gb. He doesn't
have much use for the thing and wants me to get as much as I can by selling
it. I'm assuming this thing is pretty old. It doesn't support Win2k.

Any estimates on value? I'll call up Iomega and see if they can throw some
numbers my way. Maybe we should hold a pool for the closest answer. Thanks
in advance for the help y'all.

RE: Web-based help desk system

2001-08-29 Thread Scott Vanderlip

Dear Mihnea Mironescu,

We at Internet Software Sciences are sorry that your experience with our
software has been difficult, but we have some easy solutions to your
problems listed below.

(1) First, thanks for pointing out this wrap email link problem. We will
immediately fix this for new releases or existing users will be able to
download an updated modules using our special version checking and
updating software included with the software.

(2) To change the case category boxes to drop down lists, simply change
the HTML in the appropriate ASP module for the SELECT tag from size=3 to
size=1. Since we provide the ASP source, users can quickly make these
customizations if they know some HTML and ASP code.

(3) The Customer Login approach uses a separate customer login since we
often sell to companies who customers do not have NT accounts but must
login through a web page and we set a security cookie for that session.
We do offer a complete LDAP import script that allows companies that have
NT users to import their users into our customer database so user can use
their NT username to login. Other options included with the software
allow users to enter just their email and by pass their password
requirement for internal uses only. One should review the Web+Center
Programmers guide on how to import LDAP directories into the Web+Center
customer database.

We originally used NT authenication, but configuration for this was
difficult and can complicate the installation for our different client
configurations.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the product. Product
enhancements are always welcome and can be be submitted through our
support site.

Thanks

Scott Vanderlip
Internet Software Sciences

My (short) experience with this software hasn't been too pleasant, since
the
product seems a little clumsy to setup and configure. Also, the e-mails sent
after creating/updating a case contain a broken hyperlink to the case - what
I mean is that the link is wrapped, so it doesn't work.

Also, in the form for entering a new case, the categories are list boxes
instead of combo boxes, and that makes browsing through topics rather
 difficult.

But the main reason we don't like it is that every user needs a special
account and password - why not using NT authentication? It's more secure and
it's easier for an employee to remember only one set of credentials.

This is why we stick to the _completely_ free solution from Liberum:
 www.liberum.org.

Just thought I would pass along as a extremely satisfied customer
(especially after my horrible experiences with Blue Ocean), that Internet
Software Sciences http://www.inet-sciences.com has released a new version of
their very affordable and useable web-based help desk software called
Web+Center Help Desk 3.5. I had been beta testing it an the owner/author,
Scott Vanderlip, has been one of the nicest and most receptive people I've
worked with. The five-user version is only $1500 and the three tech version
is still free! My reputation has gone up a couple of points since using this
product because of the automatic email notifications.

Additional information about the new features and upgrade information can be
found in latest Internet Software Sciences
 Newsletter on the web at:

 http://www.inet-sciences.com/newslettervol3.html

As a side note, any of you other sysadmin's using this product in a hospital
environment? I'd love to share notes. We modified the product since many of
our users (nurses mostly) don't use a PC. Also, Scott wrote a terrific app
for us based on Web+Center that will save our Medical Staff department
thousands of dollars in labor that you might be interested in. It is a
simple online database of the physicians with privileges at our hospital
that insurance companies and HMO's can access. The Medical Staff department
was having to answer about 300 requests a month via fax or mail.

I post this without compensation. I just love the product and am impressed
 with Scott's support.

RE: NEW to login scripts

2001-08-29 Thread Flanagan, Kevin

First things first, get acquainted with Vbscript, it's the best login script
processor, you can do a lot, and once you have a basic script you can easily
change it.

Logically you'd do the following

When setting up the account create their home drive, a share that is
something like \\server\username$ The $ makes it a hidden share, that way
your browse list isn't thousands of shares. Be sure to put this as their
home drive in the user properties.

The login script can then tell the process Map the homedrive That's it.

Now you have a login script, you will find things that you can do
automatically.

Well im not new to it but haven't done one yet! I have a windows 2000 server
that I would like to set up a user/unsername folder and have them loginto
the domain and have the user script run and map the appropriate drives. How
can I make a script? Is there a script maker or something to do it or is it
hand coded? Sorry to sound dumb but very new to it.

Turn off, your life will be the better for it. Create a
spreadsheet/database (your choice) and start tracking your licensing the old
fashion (read better) way. If they can't prove the license exist, then time

 Hi,

It seems like my question raised more issues than answers :-)

The TS is going to be in a DMZ and accessible somehow from the internet.
For
security, I'd like to restrict access so that it can not be administered
if
you do not have physical access, and so, I want to deny TS access to
administrators.

 Thanks,

Out VP came to me with an Iomega Ditto Max (Model #IO1000-PX) that his

Ditto Max cartridge (with FlashFile). Tape capacity is 1.5/3Gb. He
doesn't have much use for the thing and wants me to get as much as I can
by selling it. I'm assuming this thing is pretty old. It doesn't support
Win2k.

Any estimates on value? I'll call up Iomega and see if they can throw
some numbers my way. Maybe we should hold a pool for the closest answer.

Well, I can not delete any icons on the desktop. Delete key doesn't work.
I brought up the Display Properties and only odd thing I can see is, Background
Pattern is empty and Edit Pattern button is gray out. All other seems ok.
Maybe this Background Pattern has something to do with my problem.

Sounds
like you have been tricked. Did someone pasted a desk top screen shot on
your machine??. Try click and hit delete.

Event
log doesn't tell me anything. No error messages. Mouse does not function
on the desktop at all, so, right mouse click on the desktop doesn't do
anything. But if I open any application, it will work within those applications

Interesting.
Just for grins: what happens when you right-click the "desktop?"
What is the wallpaper or background right now?

Desktop icons not responding

Hello,
I am having an interesting problem on NT 4.0 SP6a machine. I can
not
click icons on the desktop using the mouse. I can tap trough using
keyboard
and access them, but mouse click doesn't work. I can, however,
use
mouse clicks on Start menus. Mouse click just would not work on
desktop
icons. Also, it won't work on newly created icons, neither.
Anyone
seen this behavior before??

Thanks.
Myung

RE: Is IEAK still downloadable

Next time... Google!

In the search box type site:microsoft.com IEAK without the quotes. Google
does a much better job than MS even on its own site.
