Re: Http to https redirect for WSS3

2008-04-07 Thread Graeme Carstairs
Ok,

In Sharepoint Central Administrator it does not give me the option to
excluded the httpredirect Virtual Dir from the managed paths.

But if I type int

stsadm -o addpath -url http://portal.domain.com/httpredirect -type exclusion

I get the following error.

The server administration programs and the Windows SharePoint Services Web
applications on this Web server are not compatible.
Ensure that the administration program is the same version as the Web
application.

This was a fresh install of WSS3 and fully configured from there.

WSS3 SP 1 has been applied some time after the site was working, and has
been working fully since.

Any ideas.

You probably need to go into WSS and make the .asp page you created a

If I goto http://portal.domain.com with the require SSL turned on, I get
an error page saying that the user is required to logon, but no login
 prompt.
If i goto http://portal.domain.com with the require ssl turned off I get
the usual login options for the web site from outside, and from inside I get
straight to the wss page as I am using NT Login.

Do you mean the user is prompted to login when they're redirected to the
https (port 443) URL or do you mean that the ASP page is never executed?

Does http://portal.domain.com prompt for a login?

Subject: Http to https redirect for WSS3

I have recently started to look at a site who have what was meant to be a
trial but has grown into a business critical application, WSS3 site.

The site is setup in IIS in its own website called portal.

Internally and Externally it is accessed by HTTP://portal.domain.com

The alternate access mapping is set to this.

I have been insisting since day one that the go HTTPS.

They have just agreed, and I have purchased an SSL cert, applied to IIS,
 and
configured WSS alternate access mapping to point to
https://portal.domain.com, opened port 443 on firewall,

Now if you enter https://portal.domain.com it all works fine, and WSS
 generates all inks etc.

The problem though is that they have numerous people accessing shortcuts
etc, pointing to http, and I would like to set an automatic change for
 http
 requests to https.

I have created the asp page and set everything up as recommended by MS (i
used the asp page they give or owa, for a custom 403 error, just missed
 out
the appending of /exchange to the url.)

If I force SSL on the website, then I get an error that the ASP page needs
 you to login.

I have disabled SSL required, on the virtual dir the asp is in, and this
 still happens

I though it was because the redirect virtual dir is under the wss extended
site of Portal, and so moved it into a new site, and pointed port 80 to
 it,
but it then just redirects to the site its on and displays under
 construction.

Any one know how I can do this?

Any http request portal.domain.com gets conve3rted to https without user
 intervention.

 i.e. http://portal.domain.com/ops/it/asset.aspx becomes
 https://portal.domain.com/ops/it/asset.aspx

 Thanks in advance

 Graeme

come down any way (it's only 100 miles), maybe the MCP party? Maybe
there's going to be a Sunbelt party (hint hint). What are the dates?

Yeah the Beerfest at Attendee night was definitely something, and the
MCP party wasn't half bad either. Cook, TVK and I had some interesting

Stationary Path

2008-04-07 Thread Gavin Wilby
Is there any way to change the default path that Microsoft Stationary lives
in.

Its usually in C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Stationery
but Id like to have that on a server shared location if possible.

Gavin.

Vodafone 3G-USB and SMTP servers

2008-04-07 Thread Oliver Marshall
Lo gang,

Anyone here getting a problem with Vodafone 3G enabled laptops (either
usb adapter based machines or inbuilt 3g units) and sending mail via
smtp servers?

We've just got 3 3g cards for laptops. No matter what mail server we try
to use they all return either AUTHORISATION REQUIRED or TOO MANY
CONNECTIONS. We've tried our own mail server here, sending via our mail
filtering service, sending straight to client mail servers, our hosted
PLESK mail server etc. All the same.

Vodafone as usual are being as helpful as choco-teapots and giving us a
standard response, but the problem only happens when using the Vodafone
service. Using the T-Mobile equivalent works fine as does the wifi down
the road, our office connections, home adsl lines etc.

Pinging the mail servers comes back with the right IP, and tracerouting
to the mail servers shows it's hitting the box.

Anyone else seen the same thing?

I think you can also use smtp.vodafone.net but you need to authenticate
against that, and again that won't help with the archive side of things.

Workaround: vpn back into work?

Will do.

If Vodafone is forcing the use of their own mail servers,
well.erthat's a bugger. We'd like to make the sales chaps
use our own mail server in order to keep the archive correct.

Can anyone think of a work around ?

Statistical crud and a clear example of making stats say what you want
them to say!

It's based on complaints filed. That fewer complaints were filed by women
does not mean they are more savy. (They may be, but the argument here
fails.) To file a complaint, one must realize that they have been
tricked, and must be angered to the point of filing the complaint.

I think I read your question as 'what's the point of imaging more than
one drive at a time'? Is that what you're asking?

'Why not', is my response. Say our helpdesk guys get 30-50 laptops at

once as possible.

The main benefit though is simply that you don't have ghost licenses,
so it's cheaper over time.

The difference is about 10-15K :) I have seen these terms used
interchangeably, however, System Engineer usually implies a higher level of
responsibility such as design whereas Administrator is more of a
maintenance role.

Both.
It is very ambiguous.
I've found that (depending on the organization) the title can mean very
little. It all boils down to the job description.

Well, it depends on the state / jurisdiction. For example, in Arizona you
can't call yourself an Engineer without a Registered Professional Engineer
(PE) from the state of Arizona. A former employer of mine ran afoul of that
law when he wanted to call his company Zonge Engineering and Research
Organization (ZERO) -- after someone complained to the state, he ended up
paying an annual consulting fee to a registered PE to satisfy the law. Seems
to CNEs (Certified Novell Engineers) and MCSEs ran into the same legal problem
in Arizona back then as well.

Yeah we've tried using telnet to send manually. We just get TOO MANY
CONNECTIONS come up in the mail server header. That happens on any mail
server.

Trying to send email via SMTP on your own servers cannot be guaranteed.
ISPs will push the connection through their own servers, block the
connections to remote servers and generally cause a lot of problems. You
should avoid using plain SMTP for roaming users if possible,
particularly if you need to keep a copy of the email on the server.

If you need the email to go through your own servers then you have three
options.

- If Exchange 2003 or higher RPC over HTTPS or OWA.
- VPN
- If you aren't using Exchange then you could also look at TLS/SMTPS if
your server supports it on another port - 465. Technically legacy, but
most email servers and clients can be configured to use it.

Ping/nslookup means nothing other than a packet is being sent back. As a
troubleshooting tool it is about as much use as shouting in a valley is
there anyone there?.
What you should be doing is seeing whether you can telnet to the port.
That will confirm connectivity.

telnet server.domain.co.uk 25

If the cursor just sits there then the traffic is being blocked.

Simon.

If Vodafone is forcing the use of their own mail servers,
well.erthat's a bugger. We'd like to make the sales chaps

Olly

If the system is connected to an APC SmartUPS, there are commands in the
Smart protocol to shut-down and power-up the unit. You could use another PC
that's just laying around gathering dust on a different UPS to control the
UPS on the server you want to power-cycle.

Aside from the VPN others suggested...

A lot of mail servers are already running an MSA (Mail Submission

filtered by ISPs. If so, have your SMTP server run on some
additional, non-standard port. The ISP is likely only looking for
TCP/25. You don't even need to use TLS or SMTP authentication,
although those are certainly a good idea.

The average is in the units of THE COUNTER ITSELF.

Now, that particular counter is measured in seconds. On my (virtual) box,
the scale for that counter is 1 and the average is 0.038. So, my average is
38 ms.

As a check, change the view to Report View. That also reports the values
in terms of the counter itself.

The value is in seconds, and if you highlight the counter, the last,
average, etc values will give you the actual value. The scale factor is
only used to make the graph fit on the scale (so you don't end up with
just a solid line at the top or the bottom).

So I am thinking that we are looking at 11ms and really high load ( 123% disk

of under 2 for my drive that has SQL database one it.

Trying to pair down some of the stuff the SQL BPA is bitching about so I don't

By any chance, is the drive/folder that you are putting the ntbackup image

putting files into a compressed folder that exceed several tens of

FWIW, I also ran into the same problem with Delayed Writes backing up to a
USB drive with NTBackup. In fact, the delayed write errors got so bad, it
corrupted my active directory on the server and I had to demote and promote
it to get it working again.

What's odd as I have two identical servers (hardware specs) - both are
backed up to a USB drive. Only one server has the delayed write errors
everytime I do backups. It's odd.

The server is an older ML350 G3 model with a crappy 532 RAID controller
(32mb) with no write cache whatsoever.

Nope, I saw a drop off around 2PM PST.

Our largest hit was the 6-8AM hours today.

U can script `net use` and `net logon` for example in the autoexec.bat file.
You can also add the password in the command.

Anyone know if you can (or how to) with a boot USB drive created with the
latest version? We're an AD environment just trying to map a drive to a share
for upload / download of images.
The Symantec boot disk wizard doesn't have any options for doing it and we
don't want to have to manually feed the credentials. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I suspect the drive is corrupted, I'm running the

FWIW, I also ran into the same problem with Delayed
 Writes backing up to a
USB drive with NTBackup. In fact, the delayed write
 errors got so bad, it
corrupted my active directory on the server and I
 had to demote and promote
it to get it working again.

What's odd as I have two identical servers (hardware
 specs) - both are
backed up to a USB drive. Only one server has the
 delayed write errors
everytime I do backups. It's odd.

The server is an older ML350 G3 model with a crappy
 532 RAID controller
(32mb) with no write cache whatsoever.

Deleting profiles

2008-04-07 Thread Benjamin Zachary

Whats everyone do when cleaning up old profiles? Im consulting for a fairly
high turnover call center and profiles are all over the place. The last time
I dealt with this personally I used the delprof utility that was on the nt4
res kit.

Does that still work today? I recall running it at a logon script back in
those days.

RE: SP2 in SBS 2003

2008-04-07 Thread gsweers
No major issues, have about 5 dozen SBS servers in production. Disable IP
Chimney, and there are a couple of updates

Things to check.
1. Latest NIC drivers, disable RSS before update
2. After SP2 install, done remotely many times, remote in and disable IP
chimney
3. Any print queues that go offline its because of SNMP on the port. Turn it
off and problem solved.
4. Make sure your apps are up to date. Latest SP and Exchange, SQL, ISA, etc..

Did all our install after hours, and if there was a problem a tech was standing
at the door when they opened to usually just reboot the server or do turn off
IP Chimney/Disable RSS before we knew about IP chimney.
Think we had two that were a problem.

YMMV greatly..

Hi,

I've read somewhere that SP2 in SBS 2003 could cause
issues and need some hotfixes. I wanted to ask if
people in the list had really issues when installing
SP2 in SBS 2003.

 Any hints?

 Thanks,

Re: Deleting profiles

2008-04-07 Thread Phil Brutsche
Yes, delprof is still available and does still work, although I would
update to the version from the Windows 2000 resource kit.

BTW, current best practices are that users don't have local admin
access, which means delprof won't necessarily work in login scripts.
Should work in startup scripts tho'. Hrm, I've never tried it, but that
does give me the idea to try it...

Alternatively, you could re-image the machine on a monthly (weekly?)
basis. I'm pretty sure Acronis SnapDeploy and Symantec Ghost have
mechanisms for handling such things automatically.
