NetBackup does offer similar deduplication features as the Iron Mountain
solution. Has anyone here compared the two products or used either? Just
looking to know about your feedback

Haha, actually I thought the netbackup was decent as a standalone piece.

  Guys,

Do any of you have any experience with the two products? How do they
compare for laptop/desktop backups? Also how does Altiris Recovery Solution
compare to both products and are there any other products you can recommend
over either Symantec or Iron Mountain for PC Backups?

Just looking for information on this.

Well, my problem is with the company itself; and what they do to
perfectly good pieces of software over time. In that respect I no
longer consider them trustworthy.

But, I know you've heard this all before.

Virtual Center query

2008-10-03 Thread James Rankin
Does anybody have any idea why sometimes some of my ESX servers show as not
responding in VirtualCenter, and the guests running on it show as
disconnected? The guests themselves are still up and running fine, but they
won't respond to VirtualCenter commands (all the options are greyed out).
The only way to get around this seems to be shut down all the guests on the
affected server, and then restart the ESX server - not really an option when
my Exchange, Excalibur and SQL servers are running on this particular ESX
box. If ESX was Windows, I guess I'd be looking for a failed service or
something, but being a bit of a Unix/ESX amateur I'm not sure where to start
troubleshooting

TIA,

JRR

What versions are you running..

I have seen this when the host agent dies. I think it was a 3.02 box from memory

i think i had to kill the vpxa service and restart it from within the host
(using ssh). I think there was a kb article about it, but i cant remember where
right now

I'd be interested to know if the host is part of a cluster and if so removing
it and re-adding it helped. also you can edit the xml file and turn up VC
logging to give you more info, but i dont have that handy at the moment. I
documented it for work but im not there right now

Process Monitor 2.0
This major update to Process Monitor adds real-time TCP and UDP
monitoring
to its existing process, thread, DLL, file system and registry
monitoring.
You can now see the TCP and UDP activity processes performed, including
the
operation (e.g. connect, send, receive), local and remote IP addresses
and
DNS names, and operation transfer lengths. On Windows Vista, Process
Monitor
also collects thread stacks for network operations.

Try:

1. Log in to the ESX Server service console as root.
2. Type service vmware-vpxa stop and press Enter.

Does anybody have any idea why sometimes some of my ESX servers
show as not responding in VirtualCenter, and the guests running on it
show as disconnected? The guests themselves are still up and running
fine, but they won't respond to VirtualCenter commands (all the options
are greyed out). The only way to get around this seems to be shut down
all the guests on the affected server, and then restart the ESX server -
not really an option when my Exchange, Excalibur and SQL servers are
running on this particular ESX box. If ESX was Windows, I guess I'd be
looking for a failed service or something, but being a bit of a Unix/ESX
amateur I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting

RE: HP printer reset.

2008-10-03 Thread Glen Johnson
Thanks all for the suggestions.
Someone sent me the instruction off list and the printer has been reset.
Steps were.
Hold Cancel and Select while powering on.
While display is blank and 3 lights on, release buttons.
Press and release cancel.
Press and release select.
Display shows NVRAM INIT and now the password is cleared.
BTW, I'd never seen that particular procedure while searching HP.

Might need to remove the card and reinsert, see this HP document for the J6057A

Jetdirect Inside Print Servers - How to Determine, Reset, and Configure an IP
Address on an HP Jetdirect Print Server - bpj02738 - HP Business Support Center

Resetting the HP Jetdirect to factory default settings

Also known as a cold reset , a cold reset can be helpful if unable to
Telnet to the print server due to an IP address conflict or if unable to
see it in HP Web Jetadmin, the Install Network Printer Wizard, or one of
the other utilities listed below.

A cold reset will clear any previous IP address or passwords as well as
resetting the printer configuration back to factory defaults. The factory
defaults include a TCP/IP address of either 169.254.x.x or 192.0.0.192.
Some print servers may show the TCP/IP address as 0.0.0.0 if a LAN cable
is not connected, or if the print server cannot detect the network
connection due to a bad cable, hub, or LAN link speed configuration
problem.

Here are some general steps that work for most printers and print servers.
Additional cold reset steps may be found in the printer's manual or CD-ROM
documents or on the HP Web site noted in the hyperlink above.

* Most HP printers with internal HP Jetdirect print servers can be
reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and
holding down the ONLINE or GO buttons while turning the printer back on.
The printer's control panel display should read Cold Reset or Restoring
Factory Settings . If the printer has no LCD display, the indicator lights
will cycle.

* To cold reset an LIO print server (such as the 250M or 200M), remove
the print server from the printer, press an hold the test button while
putting the print server back into the printer. Continue to hold the test
button for about five seconds.

Perform an Offline Files Sync from command line?

2008-10-03 Thread Michael . Leone
Anybody know how to do an Offline Files Cache Synchronization from a
command line? Or - via a program?

What I want to do:

Run a script to remotely sync a user. Remotely add reg key to delete
Offline Folders cache:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache]
FormatDatabase=dword:0001

-- Change GPO to change location of Offline Files. Refresh GPO settings
(GPUPDATE /FORCE)

Remotely reboot.

I know I can add the key remote using reg add \\workstation\key, and
force the GPO update, and the reboot. But how do I have the script do a
sync first?

Thanks

BTW ... ideally, this would be in a CMD script, but I can execute that
part by calling a VBS script, if need be.

Yeah, I saw that (after posting here). However, I still have v1 of this

which has a dozen or more options, from what I've seen.

for v1.1, which has a dozen or more options, from what I've seen.

I see that CSCCMD has a MOVESHARE option, which should move the cache to a
new location. In our case, we set that location via Administrative
Template in a GPO. So - ideally - I'd like the GPO to control all this.
What I'm looking to do is force a sync, then delete the cache (so it
doesn't point back to the old server location). From that point forward,
I'd like for it all to happen normallu via GPO, as it should - i.e., use
logs in; gets new location from GPO when logging in; folders are then
synced at logoff to new location by GPO(that is our setting in the GPO -
files sync at logoff).

So I don't really need a MOVESHARE, for my purposes here; I need a SYNC
NOW option. :-)

I've been using RegExBuddy to learn and to maintain a library of useful
expressions. It comes with a standard set of expressions that are pretty
useful too. It's got a really nice explain function that tells you what
each part of the expression you're building does.

disconnected? The guests themselves are still up and running fine, but
they won't respond to VirtualCenter commands (all the options are greyed
out). The only way to get around this seems to be shut down all the
guests on the affected server, and then restart the ESX server - not
really an option when my Exchange, Excalibur and SQL servers are running
on this particular ESX box. If ESX was Windows, I guess I'd be looking
for a failed service or something, but being a bit of a Unix/ESX amateur
I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting

RE: Microsoft's Free version of Hyper-V Ships! a random Friday Q

2008-10-03 Thread Chris Alliey
VMWare has been giving their hypervisor away for free for a while now. In
addition to ESXi, they have been giving VMWare server and Player away for a
long time.

I’m glad MS is ‘giving’ it away (Don’t you still need to buy an OS from
them?) – but I’ll stick with VMware!

Just my 0.02¢

Perhaps not immediately, but surely many of you remember when Novell had a
seemingly untouchable hold on the networking OS market?

Dead horse Q of the week: If Microsoft suddenly made several poor choices
and was about to go under, would the government bail it out?

Hmmm, I don't think that Hyper-V is going to shove VMWare out of the way,
they are way to ahead of MS in virtualization at this point to even be
threatened by Hyper-V.

+1 I think the whole world is about to become more virtual. Will free

Triple boot

2008-10-03 Thread David Mazzaccaro
I would like to be able to triple boot my machine:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate
Ubuntu (latest version)

What is the best way to do this? My hard drive is 80GB
I assume Gparted is the best utility to create the the partions - and
start from there?

Any direction to get me started is appreciated.
Thx

Agreed. Ubuntu on VMware doesn't streamline well with the system. You
totally feel like you are in an emulator and nothing coordinates well
with the hardware. Especially on a laptop, that's important.

Re: Triple boot

2008-10-03 Thread Peter van Houten
David, I needed a laptop with multiple operating systems for portable
support work and I experimented for about a week until I managed to get
the configuration below to work. I initially tried every free route and
almost gave up on the project even after resigning myself to using
Acronis OS Selector. Even that needed a lot of fiddling.

I must warn you, it is not for the faint hearted and I can't guarantee
it will work for you. Vista, in particular is quite forthright in its
installation demands!

The procedure listed below your message...

Making a multiple boot system using Acronis OS Selector
--

Using the following operating system and data partitions:

. Windows Vista SP1
. Windows XP SP3
. Kubuntu Linux 8.04
. FreeBSD 7.0
. Linux/Unix swap
. NTFS data

PC operating systems use a hard disk drive divided up into a number of
partitions. Only 4 PRIMARY partitions are allowed. It is possible to
use EXTENDED partitions which can contain numerous LOGICAL partitions to
create more than 4 partitions.

The physical disk is divided up into cylinders, heads and sectors
(c/h/s) and each head covers a track of 63 sectors (sector 1 to 63).
The first sector of the disk 0/0/1 contains the MBR (Master Boot Record)
and the partition table with the layout of the disk. The remainder of
this track (up to and including the last sector 63 is normally not used
but for our purposes, it is used by Acronis to store the OS Selector
boot loader code. The first partition created will start at 0/1/1

1. Boot from the Linux or FreeBSD CD and create a small primary
partition, say 100MB, as /dev/sda1 and format as FAT32. This will be
used to store the Acronis OS Selector programs and data. Using FAT32
format allows us to access the partition from DOS, if needed, in case of
catastrophe. Acronis allows one to use a Windows partition to store
this data but knowing Windows, I would prefer to keep it completely
separate. It also allows us to add and delete partitions at a later
stage without disturbing the code.

2. Boot from the Vista DVD and create the next partition for Vista. Use
whatever disk space is needed but bear in mind that Vista (as well as
XP, Linux and FreeBSD) will use the last NTFS partition to store data,
so the program partition does not need to be too large, so I chose 20GB.
Vista tends to rewrite the MBR and boot sectors, which is why we
install it first.

3. Boot from the Linux CD and run GpartEd. Check that the first two
partitions are /dev/sda1 (100MB) and /dev/sda2 (20GB). Create the next
partition (/dev/sda3) for Windows XP as NTFS and bear in mind the sizing
constraints as per the Vista install. (We cannot directly install XP as
the install process would overwrite our MBR and system boot sectors, so
we will use a partition copy later on).

4. Create the fourth primary partition (/dev/sda4) as an extended
partition. (This will contain the remainder of the logical partitions
we require). Use all the remaining space on the disk. Within this
extended partition, create an EXT3 partition (/dev/sda5) for Linux and a
partition (/dev/sda6) for FreeBSD Unix. Make sure the mount points are
set as /. Use whatever size is required (I used 10GB each) Create
ONE swap partition (/dev/sda7) for Linux and Unix and the rule of thumb
is 2 x RAM, so I used 2,048MB. Lastly, create a data partition
(/dev/sda8) for all the operating systems using the remainder of the
space. All the operating systems can read and write NTFS, so use this
format to prepare the last partition.

5. Install Linux to the first EXT partition but make sure that under
advanced settings in the partitioning section, you select the boot
record to go into the Linux partition and NOT to the MBR!

6. Boot the system (it will automatically go into Vista as there isn't
anything in the MBR to tell it otherwise). Install Acronis Disk
Director and make sure it goes into the very first FAT32 partition.
Choose to load the OS Selector option.

7. Reboot the system and OS Selector should start automatically,
displaying Vista, Linux and floppy boot options. Boot from each to
check functionality.

8. Use Acronis Trueimage to copy an existing Windows XP installation.
Trueimage is unable to directly copy one partition to overwite another,
so I used a USB hard drive containing an XP installation and dumped the
image file on the data partition. I then ran the program again to
restore

Network World FWIW, just did a month long test of HyperV vs ESX and said
basically ESX wins hands down. *shrug*

Still worth a chuckle. The Government might try to bail out Microsoft if
anything like that happened to them. They would still want their tech
support.

Don't see why... The government has made several poor choices and is
about to go under, and what has Microsoft done to bail them out? (Just
kidding, sort-of...)

Hmmm, I don't think that Hyper-V is going to shove VMWare out of the
way, they are way to ahead of MS in virtualization at this point to
 even be threatened by Hyper-V.

+1 I think the whole world is about to become more virtual. Will
free Hyper-V do to VMware what Internet Explorer did to Netscape?
Is it déjà vu all over again?

Well, my problem is with the company itself; and what they do to
perfectly good pieces of software over time. In that respect I no
longer consider them trustworthy.

But, I know you've heard this all before.

 Guys,

Do any of you have any experience with the two products? How do they
compare for laptop/desktop backups? Also how does Altiris Recovery
Solution
compare to both products and are there any other products you can
recommend
over either Symantec or Iron Mountain for PC Backups?

Just looking for information on this.

 Thanks
