Multi-tenant campus security

2013-01-31 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Hi all. Working with a client that runs a variety of real estate locations,
leasing space to tenants. Locations are large. The new one that's being
built out covers close to 50 acres. There will be a bunch of tenants,
ranging from small (2-10) to large (1,000-2,000) users per tenant.
Building management will be providing networking as a service, with Avaya
phones, IP, and internet for clients. All clients will be logically isolated
from all others but will be on the same switch fabric and use the same
internet pipe.

I lose sleep over these types of implementations. I seem to be the only one
who is highly concerned about security threats. We have some very good
networking guys doing the routing/switching/firewall stuff, but there are
still obviously significant security concerns. It's trivial for a tenant on
the inside to set up bad guy stuff and start pounding on the internal
network. The Cisco guys are much more focused on outside-to-inside security.

I'm looking for good info on internal networking security in this sort of
implementation. My google-fu isn't working. Most of the multi-tenancy stuff
I'm finding is geared towards virtualization, cloud services, and the like.

My AOO will include providing DHCP for the VoIP phone system and all the
data VLANs. I also need to advise on internal security and isolation. So I'm
trying to find good resources on those sorts of thing. I'm also thinking we
should have some sort of IDS/IPS on the internal network to stop or at least
flag the internal hacker. Any recommendations along those lines?

One more thing if that's not enough... As management is selling per-port
networking services, is there any way to identify or prevent someone from
plugging in router inside their subnet and adding ports?

TIA

You'll want to put the tenant-facing switch ports into a separate VLAN.
-- Yep. Each tenant will have their own VLAN.

Configure the switch to only forward frames from tenant ports to the uplink
port (to your router). I believe Cisco calls this a private VLAN.
Enterasys uses the term MDU (multi-dwelling unit).
-- Yep. Done.

Limit switch ports to one MAC address.
-- Yep. Done.

Look for switch features to prevent MAC spoofing. For example, a MAC
address unexpectedly moving from one port to another.
-- Will look into this...

Harden your tenant-facing router ports as if they were Internet-facing
(because they are).
-- Not sure what you mean by harden...

Put the phones on a separate VLAN and separate switch ports. If possible,
implement link-layer authentication between the phones and the switch
(802.1X, etc.).
-- Part 1 done, will look at part 2.

The plurality of home PCs have some kind of malware on them, which means
that the plurality of your tenants will appear to be the internal hacker.
Chasing that may rob you of any profit and/or piss off your tenants. A lot
of ISPs settle for just making sure what one customer doesn't hurt the ISP
network. Tenants are on their own.
-- Concerned that tenant A might hold management responsible for not
catching malware coming from tenant B... Might be all about the contract,
though...

IDS/IPS might be a good idea on the phone and management VLANs, though.
-- Good thought. Still interested in recommendations for that type of
system...

The big Internet companies (Comcast, Time-Warner, Verizon, etc.) tried to
enforce that. Even with all their billions, they lost the fight. Suggest
you not also try to bail out the ocean.
-- Good to know...

If you really want to make sure customers don't get more than they pay for,
suggest metering the bandwidth and charging for usage.
Tiered usage bands seem to be the way the industry is headed.
-- Yes; that's the plan; carve them out a piece of pipe and charge per
bandwidth.

Thanks!!!

As in, do as much as you can to reduce security exposure. Such as disabling
any management protocols (Telnet, SSH, web, etc.) on those ports/VLANs.
-- Ah. Yes. Done.

Since the tenants will be bringing the Internet to you, you need to treat
them as hostile.
-- Excellent point.

Concerned that tenant A might hold management responsible for not
catching malware coming from tenant B... Might be all about the
 contract, though...

You definitely do *not* want to go down that road as an Internet provider.
(As a managed services provider, sure, but for that, you can't address
*only* the physical neighbors and expect that to end
well.) You'll want a lawyer familiar with this stuff to draw up the
legalese to make it clear that you (as the provider) are not responsible for
all the bad things on the Internet (and other tenants are also on the
Internet).
-- Good. Thanks for the advice!

Patch management recommendations

2013-01-16 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I work for a consulting firm that manages a variety of SMB clients. As we
increase our client load and the size of the clients (moving from the 3-10
seat to the 50-1000 seat clients) we are implementing more advanced products
for a variety of tasks.

We are currently looking at patch management solutions. Our current paradigm
is a mix of WSUS and manual intervention, but it's not enough, obviously. I
haven't used a centralized patch management system for around 5-6 years
(used to use early versions of Shavlik) so I haven't been keeping up with
the market. We're now looking for something that does 3rd party apps, not
just MS stuff, so WSUS is off the table. Our clients are all on MS
platforms, though; almost no *nix or Apple.

I don't envision a one-size-fits-all product. I expect that we'll want a
variety of solutions tailored to the size and complexity of the client. And
I have no illusions about the ease of patch management given any product.
:-)
My boss would love an MSP-style of centrally managed product that can handle
all our clients, but my belief is that trying to go that route is much more
difficult than doing per-client implementations, especially without
dedicated patch management admins.

Having said all that, is anyone working with patch management systems that
they really like for this space? Also, any you really DON'T like?

Thanks!

RE: 7 shortcuts To Get Your Network Hacked (huh?)

2012-11-01 Thread Charlie Kaiser
It's a big problem for us. As consultants to numerous small businesses, we are
finding more and more companies that like the idea of BYOD because they don't
have to spend money for a user's machine. And since they haven't seen any bad
things happen because we have the rest pretty well under control, they have
their heads in the sand as far as what can happen when all that
behind-the-scenes security is not applied to users' devices. Then if they are
approached with a project to secure all the user devices, they balk at spending
the money. Selling the lack of a problem isn't easy.
It's bad enough with phones, but with ipads and laptops starting to fall into
this mix, it's going to get tougher in a hurry.

Ironically, getting clients to buy into managing phones is sometimes even
harder. It's only a phone. Hmmm... Not quite anymore...

My guess is it is going to later rather sooner for most companies. I recently
attended a CEO level conference and the question was posed to them if they were
taking any precautions now for BYOD’s and of the 30 or so CEO’s that were in
the room 2 raised their hands. Kinda scary when it stop and think about it.

I would say that BYOD is going to creep up to the top of the list sooner than
laters for the following reasons.

1) Lack of security specifications and hardening on users devices. (
Android and IOS have many flaws some we are just finding out about) (Just look
at jailbreakme.com.

2) Security solutions like ( Mobile-Iron and others) will help mitigate
but not totally reduce issues with endpoint devices to an acceptable level.

3) Again these BYOD devices, are more likely and easily stolen or
misplaced as compared to corporate devices ( laptop) these days ( abiet, yes
laptops are still getting stolen, but usually they are fully encrypted, so
going to be hard to get any information of value off them for a while, note: I
didn’t say impossible)

but most of the time it is not. They'll end up using a DC from a field

not the architect, but I know that the person that set up the domain used
Sites and site links for replication, etc. Using this had no effect, and
neither did removing them. Anyone have advice on how to make clients use

RE: Looking for options... Mobile workforce and central resources

2012-07-24 Thread Charlie Kaiser
That is a reasonable short-term solution as the users already use TS for the
LOB app. But I keep thinking there's a better way to manage the whole
thing...

Our experience with TS/Citrix-type solutions is that for some reason the
users can't quite grasp the entire remote machine concept. They just want to
be able to work on their computer. In the mid-to-large company space, this
isn't as big a problem, but in the small (10-50 users) space, it's been an
issue for us.

I think we're probably going to have to have a serious discussion with
client management about the global options, but I'd sure like to be aware of
all the good ones that are out there...

Honestly, it really does sound like either a Citrix solution (XenApp?) or a
VDI solution would be your best bet for application access. (I'm partial to
VMware View, but I also have a substantial VMware investment already.)
Combine with a tool for remote account unlocks and password resets (we use
Scriptlogic's Desktop Authority Password Self-Service) and that helps solve
the password expiration problem-lots of advanced warning and a self-service
HTTPS portal with security questions for credential management. I'd say go
that route and manage it as a BYOD environment rather than trying to get
credentials onto the remote machines.

We're looking for some options for a client with what is to us a new
set of
challenges and requirements that will no doubt become more prevalent
with
other clients over the next year or so.

Client is a business with around 75 users. Client business is
real-estate
related, so most data is somewhat sensitive but not secret or
regulated.
Client management allows/encourages/requires remote work. Over half
the
workforce is on laptops. Most users have either Android or iphone
mobile
devices for email.

AD domain, file server, LOB app (on 2 RDP servers) and Exchange 2010
are
hosted with small hosting company. Main office has a DC locally,
VPN'd to
hosting site. Email is accessed via Outlook Anywhere.

Remote users are on laptops (XP and W7, a few Macs) that are not
domain-joined. Most of them never see the office. As you can
imagine, the
combination of local user accounts, domain creds, and a LOB app that
is not
LDAP-aware makes identity management a PITA.

This has been in place for about 6 months now (we just inherited it
recently) and today all the passwords expired. Let's just say our
help desk
phone is a puddle of molten plastic...

I'm figuring there must be a way to make it easier to manage the
remote user
credentials stuff without implementing a fire-up-on-demand VPN. I've
taken a
very brief look at DirectAccess, and while it looks like it does a
lot of
what I'm envisioning, the requirements for 2008R2 and W7 could make
this a
showstopper or at least a major hurdle for this or other clients.

I know I'm not the only one out there with clients in this
configuration. In
the past, I'd have said VPN, domain joined, etc. or everything
through RDP.
But I'm thinking there's got to be other solutions. Anyone doing
anything
like this? What's working for you? What's NOT?

Thanks...

RE: Looking for options... Mobile workforce and central resources

2012-07-24 Thread Charlie Kaiser
While pw issues are what's driving this right now, I'm trying to look more
at the bigger picture; unmanaged devices (mainly laptops; I'm not too
concerned about mobile phones - they only do email) needing to access and
manipulate company data and LOB apps, and simplifying the user experience.
Those folks should be selling products, not worrying about keeping 4
passwords and 3 devices in sync.

One of the bigger challenges I face with these types of clients is the
dichotomy between local data manipulation (docs stored on the laptop) and
remote desktop experience; i.e., I can get to my data but only if I'm
online or I need to be able to save that attachment locally and print it.

This is probably more of a corporate culture issue than a technical one; I
could require VPN for everything, GINA replacement, the whole nine yards,
but that's a huge undertaking and business management will probably say Why
should I spend all that money to make things more complex?, or make
everyone work on the TS boxes. But then everyone in the company needs to
change the way they do things to fit an IT requirement. That sounds
backwards to me.

Ideally, I'd like to see those laptops (even the Macs) be able to seamlessly
connect to the company resources securely. The MS DirectAccess seems like
the right concept, but it's as big a project if not worse. Is there
something similar to DA?

I have to say I am NOT a fan of unmanaged devices having any sort of company
resource access. So it seems I have two options; either manage those devices
somehow and block all others, or allow any device to access data through a
TS/Citrix-type paradigm. I lean towards the former since it's easier on the
users.

I'm very interested in hearing what others are doing with this type of thing
in the small-business space...

If so, the cheap solution is to just setup a TS server that would allow
password changes. Or, you could spring for inexpensive to expensive
options for self-management of passwords:

More RAM. As much as the hosts can hold. Lots of NICs. You will eventually
want to isolate traffic and the more NICs you have the easier it will be.
Architect storage carefully. Disk I/O, being the slowest link in the chain,
can really put you behind the 8-ball. Leave room for test environments.

Why so much for Exch/AD? Are you having a vendor do that or are you doing
it? I've done a bunch of those. They're not that complex...

Subject: moving to virtual

Greetings,

Getting very close to moving into the VM world, and have a couple of
questions.

1) I am trying to figure out if I should go with 8 core or 6 core processors
in my 3 hosts for my upcoming VMware environment.

The price is about double. And I'm not sure I need 8 cores.

The layout that has been quoted is as follows:

3 hosts connected to a PS4100XV SAN running VMware Essentials Plus Kit.

The host servers I am looking at are either:

HP DL360 G8 2x IntelR XeonR E5-2640 (6 core, 2.50 GHz, 15MB, 95W) $5356 each

HP DL360 G8 2x IntelR XeonR E5-2690 (8 core, 2.90 GHz, 20MB, 135W) $10,061
each

I currently have 8 physical servers (Win2003, E2003, Citrix 4.0) that we
will be P2V'd.

After I P2V the servers, the plan is to begin creating new Windows 2008 R2
VMs and migrating each server's role (2008R2 domain, Exchange 2010, and
Citrix XenApp 6.5).

I want enough power to be able to run my existing 8 servers in a virtual
environment and migrate them to AD2008/E2010/XenApp as well as leave some
room for testing and growth.

2 of the vendors said 6 core is fine, another vendor is quoting 8 core
processors.

2) The quotes I have for the services part of this are:

$40,000 ($12k for AD/Exch, $8k for XenApp 20k for VMware)

$38,000 (not itemized)

$28,000 ($11k for AD/Ex, $6k XenApp, $11k for VM)

Do these sound legit? I have ~190 users if that helps.

I really think 28k is either too aggressive or simply not realistic. This
is the same vendor who quoted me (3) single processor servers, so I have to
go back to them and tell them I want dual proc.

3) For the SAN, I have 2 options:

PS4100XV (12 600GB 15k SAS) $23,000

NetApp FAS2240 (12 600GB 10k SAS) $22,000

I have 2 vendors pushing the PS4100XV, and the other pushing the NetApp.

From what I have been told, I'll get better IOPS w/ the 15k drives in the
Equalogic. And fuller feature set.

Any one w/ experiences w/ either of these models want to add their $.02?

This is a completely new world for me, so any help is appreciated!

Have a single PC (Windows XP SP3) stuck in a Workgroup that is giving me

Tried changing the NIC card after a similiar issue I read online, but that

Any idea what might be causing it? Some kind of corruption with the IP

Subject: Slow Excel Files

Hi All,

I have a Windows 2008R2 file server at the far end of a WAN link. There is
a 20ms ping time between the workstations and the server. This is pretty
constant.

The file server contains a lot of Excel files. Different versions, some
with macros some without. Some files are quite old, some are newer.

Opening some of these files over the WAN link can take upwards of a minute
for a 1MB file. Other similarly sized files will open in 6 seconds.

At this point I'm looking for a few thoughts on where I can start my
investigations.

Thx

Shawn

1) Install Ex on beefier box (member server of same domain)

2) Move mailboxes to new box

3) Uninstall Ex from old box and re-use serial

First: it's my understanding that Outlook profiles will be automagically
updated to point to the mailbox's new location. Correct?

Second: Anyone see a problem re-using the serial key?

Seems a simple plan but you know how that goes..

Windows Server Backup BSOD

2012-05-14 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Windows 2008 R2 SP1, running on VMWare ESX1 5.0. Exchange 2010 installed,
single server Exchange org. Server hdw is a dell R710. 2 datastores; one is
DAS for OS and transaction logs, other is iSCSI on an iomega PX12 for the
Exchange DB. DB is ~100g. NIC on VM is the E1000, not the VMXnet.

This is a new install in the last month. Once we installed exchange and
moved mailboxes, we tried backing up the server using Windows Server Backup.
Backup is to another local disk on secondary DAS (not the same as OS/logs)
Quickly got a BSOD, irq not less than or equal in netio.sys. Nominal
troubleshooting did not lead to an obvious fix. Opened a case with PSS. Dump
analysis led to recommendation of installing KB 2664888 and updating network
driver. We installed the hotfix and performed VMware updates via update
manager. No change.

When running WSB, we see the initial exchange consistency check and during
that time the server bogs down. Task manager shows eseutil taking 100% CPU
and after maybe 10 minutes or so the BSOD occurs.

MS' recommendation for our next maintenance window is to run msconfig and
disable all 3rd party services/processes. We will try this.

My question is this; anyone seen this issue with WSB? If we try running
another backup app (i.e., backup exec) might this be better? Or is it an
underlying server issue?

RE: What can and can't you do with EC2?

2012-03-27 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've set up domains and DCs on EC2. We have also hosted applications
accessible only to certain IP ranges. My preferences to this point have been
to have separate domains out in EC2 but dependent on security requirements
there's no reason you couldn't connect an EC2 instance to an internal
network.

I don't think I'd want to try DHCP over EC2, though...

There are lots of quirks with EC2 stuff. Whenever I'm trying something new
there, I always set up a test environment with them and beat it up before
committing to putting in a production environment.

While there is a lot you can do with it, you have to ask why would you do
that? Sometimes it makes sense to move everything to them, sometimes you're
better off staying local. Sometimes a combination works, too...

You can lock down IP communication to your specific network or device if you
want.

RE: Carolina BBQ Sauce (was Re: Proxy server and ISA)

2012-03-14 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Dry rub...
Paprika, kosher salt, brn sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder,
black pepper, cumin, and cayenne.

Cooking...
GOSM gas smoker, hickory chunks mixed with some apple chips. Digital thermo
(MUST HAVE DIGITAL!) temps between 225 and 240, never higher. Smoke (light
blue, not grey) until internal temp reaches 165ºF (also on digital
dual-probe thermo)(about 8-12 hrs depending on outside temps). Baste with
apple cider from a spray bottle at least once per hour to keep the outside
from drying out.

Then pull it and wrap in HD tinfoil. Add more apple cider (maybe half a cup
or less) Seal tightly and place in 210ºF oven until internal temp reaches
200-205º (maybe another 12 hours). I use the oven for the second half
because trying to smoke it overnight is tough and also tends to toughen the
outside and can cause excessively heavy smoke flavor. The initial smoking
penetrates far enough to give a good rind without making jerky. At this
point it pulls perfectly. SAVE THE DRIPPINGS!

Sauce...
Cider vinegar, water, sweet pickle juice, catsup, apple cider, brn sugar,
hot sauce, creole seasoning, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and pan
drippings. Sauce warmed just enough to dissolve the sugar, never hot enough
to boil.

Now when the Q discussion is done, we can talk about smoking steelhead
fillets. Costco has some marvelous steelhead at times...

Of course, being a good NC boy, taking the challenge = another excuse to
eat some Q

Dry rub, sometimes inject with Apple cider, smoke 240 degrees until it's
done. Put it in a
cooler wrapped in a towel for half our or so, then pull it. Because I
like it, I then mix in a
middle NC vinegar/pepper sauce, but it is quite good without it. The
reason for 240 vs
the advertised best temp of 225 is simply because my smoker seems to have
a natural
tendency to settle at a steady 240.

RE: Network access to 2 seperate domains

2011-12-08 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Create him a domain account in your domain. Don't use a local account. The
domain account will provide Exch and file access. You can provide him the
technical solution. If he can't utilize the proper username and pw, he
shouldn't be a director. It's not rocket science and he probably has many
usernames and pws around the web.

If he's using Outlook 2010, he can access MAPI accounts from both Exch
servers.

This is a workable situation. I'd recommend experimenting with the setup
required on another machine before deploying the solution to him; there may
be some traps regarding DNS or server perms that will need to be resolved...

 Hi
Ok we have a director from a parent company
Lets say they have a domain called companyx.local
 We have our domain company.local

 So totally separate local domains

The director needs to access files and emails from both domains,
apparently his anti virus and updates come live from the internet

I wanted to setup web access to our exchange and a local account on our
fileserver and shortcut so when he clicks it will prompt for user name
 and password to our servers
However I know he will enter his other user name and password?

 Thoughts
Also he want to access files from his network on ours and have exchange
with offline files to ours and his networks.

This is for 6 months only

RE: Placement and spacing of server racks

2011-09-02 Thread Charlie Kaiser
My placement is simple assuming that environmental (power/HVAC) and network
cabling is adequate; I make sure I can open the rack doors completely if
installed, I make sure I can slide the servers all the way out for
maintenance (don't want to have to move a rack to install a server), and I
make sure I don't block doors/vents. Side to side I butt them right up
against each other. Unless you have a specific need to get into the rack
from the side, I've never found it to be necessary to spread them out that
way...

Subject: Placement and spacing of server racks

 Greetings!

Our server room is finally getting some badly needed upgrades (including
the removal of a
partial wall, more power, and a real server room cooling unit).

We currently have three server racks. Once this renovation project is
complete, we will
be adding two fairly full server racks. We are hoping to have these
upgrades keep the
room adequate for another 5 years. So, depending on the recommendations
of rack
spacing, it may be necessary to take out another wall and expand into what
is currently an
 office.

 So, the questions are:

 1. How closely together do you space your server racks? That is, how much
space between
 each rack?

 2. How far out from the walls to you have them (both for air flow and for
rear access)?

I believe the current dimensions of the room would allow 7 racks (and we
are already
claiming space for 5) along one wall and with room for another 1-2 on
another wall. Your
recommendations may force us to re-consider.

 Thank you...

Subject: recovering dead server hard drives

One of my customers referred someone to me who had trouble with a server.

He explained that the office lost power and when power was restored
everything can back
up but the office couldn't connect to the server. After a few quick
questions went to the
office and the server looked and sounded like it was on but no video.
Server was under the
counter with screens on the doors. Area was warm when I opened it. Not
good I'm
thinking. Tried another monitor, same no video. Opened case and saw
neither the case fan
or the CPU fan spinning. Held in power switch to shut down.

It looks like the motherboard is dead. Press power button and power supply
fan starts,
lights come on but nothing else. No beeps and no video.

Thoughts on trying to recover the data. I can put the drives into another
system but if I
remember correctly software RAID writes to the hard drive and the Windows
software
doesn't recognize them. So it asks you to initialize them. Does that
change anything on
the hard drive? I'm trying to see if I can get to the data before the last
resort is to a
 hard drive recovery place.

 Additional information.

Of course he has no documentation on info on the server. Asked if he had a
backup and
said it was on the server. I see no external drives or tape device. Really
not good I'm
thinking now. And of course he says all his stuff is on the server. Great!
No backup all his
office files are on the server.

I ask if he knows if the drives are mirrored or using some form of RAID.
No idea. Server
has 4 SATA drives. One is 80GB which I think is the Windows system drive
and three
250GB which are unknown. The sever has a Super Micro motherboard (out of
warranty)
and I think is setup with software RAID. But I don't know if it might be 1
or 5 or what.
Server is a few years old, original guy not around anymore, and so on.

I have another server I could try and use the drives on but will have to
do a repair
because of the hardware change. Original server single socket P4, my
server dual socket
Xeon, both populated. I certainly don't want to destroy the data so am
planning my next
 move.

 Thanks,

 Art

obsessed with planes (mostly the F14, for some reason) and loves to watch
a particular
video of it. It's just that booting up my laptop, attaching it to the TV,
switching the TV
to VGA mode, and then firing up the video for him is a bit of a chore, and
I was just
wondering if anyone knew any way it could be streamlined.

 TIA,

 Hey all,

Our current remote support software sucks when the client is a win7 with
UAC. Handicapped to almost the point of useless.

What do you like that handles UAC in a way that makes remote support
 feasible?

RE: Contingency For Home Workers

2011-05-12 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Ideally, the company provides all the equipment that the user requires, and
stipulates that the provided infrastructure is used only for company
business. That makes the home office a remote site of the business and
allows appropriate management.
That's not always realistic though.
If you have a standard for applications and configuration, you can work
within those parameters and say sorry, your PC doesn't have the correct
version of X. But you should have management buy-in on that. I work for
some clients that say fix it for him regardless. My feeling is that if the
home user wants to connect to the business network, they should be willing
to modify their home system to meet the requirements. If they won't, then
come into the office to work.
Another method that helps to mitigate this and provide a small amount of
isolation is to allow RDP to the user's office desktop, where they then do
the necessary work. That way the only home PC requirement is an RDP client.
But then you're opening up RDP holes internally.
I've also set up RDP to a terminal server and allowed users to connect to
that, and do their work on that desktop. With care, you can sandbox that TS
to a point.

Given the ability, I'd much prefer to see fully company-managed assets used
for remote office work, though.

 Subject: Contingency For Home Workers

Just looking for some thoughts/feedback on what others are doing.

We have a number of home workers who have remote access capability based
around
Oracle's Secure Global Desktop (a Tarantella WebTop derivative) and RSA
SecurID token
technology. The setup is ideal: we give the users a SecurID token and they
use their own
home broadband connection and hardware (PC/Laptop) to access the company
systems.

However we had a scenario over last weekend whereby one home worker
decided to
upgrade to Internet Explorer 9 and yes you've guessed it Oracle's Secure
Global Desktop
stopped working due to Java issues. I've now been asked to come up with a
cost
effective contingency plan should such a situation arise again. My
initial thoughts would
be to get the users to use Firefox or Safari instead of IE. Although I
don't think you can
force users to use something they may be do not want to, especially as it
their own
 personal kit.

So, it brings me to the question of how do other people/businesses deal
with the whole
home worker scenario, especially when faced with hardware issues or
software upgrades
 gone bad?

 Regards,

 Rab.

RE: Anyone recommendations for Cloud server hosting?

2011-03-30 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've used Rackspace and AWS. I'm pretty happy with AWS and their EC2
offerings these days. There's a lot you can do there, including having load
balancing, moving your entire server to a larger instance when you need
something beefier, and integrated backups to S2. Something about having an
image of your running server you can spin up in seconds is comforting.
There are occasional issues; I did some extensive domain-based
implementations with them and found some oddities around time sync and
Kerberos, but nothing I couldn't work around easily enough. Support is also
a bit slow; that's one area where Rackspace really excels. I currently run
AWS servers for several clients and we're pretty happy with it. I think
overall the self-manageability is more flexible with AWS than Rackspace. I
think they're cheaper, too...

I think it points more towards the autonomy of the States.
For many things, the States can do as they wish. The US born
requirement for our President was part of our founding
Constitution. Another part of that Constitution
delegates a great deal of self-rule to the individual
States. As they became States they were able to decide that
issue for themselves. Even now if a State wanted to require
you to be US born to be a governor they certainly could pass
a State Constitutional amendment to do so.

I can see the help desk calls now: I can't log in. Nope. No error message,
it just won't let me in.

Probably better to check for the drive existence, toss a helpful error
message, and prompt for a manual mapping if it doesn't exist. Or better yet,
fix the back-end issues that result in no home drive mapping.

Dumping a user out of their session because an IT process doesn't work
doesn't sound like the best possible solution...

Hi Doug. I'm curious about your reasoning for not wanting to host it

I've done a bunch of work with the AWS stuff but not for streaming...

RE: automatic delete log files

2011-02-08 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Are they being backed up by a process that allows a post-backup command
(like BE)? If so, upon successful backup, delete...
I've also done scripting that does copies/versions/archive. But if you can

RE: http://aws.amazon.com/

2011-01-31 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've done a bunch of work with the AWS stuff. While it is a good system and
allows for some pretty cool fast provisioning, it's not without its pain
points. When you combine it with the S3 storage and a backup app like
Cloudberry, it can let you do a lot of cool things.
If you are working on web-type stuff that has to be tested from outside,
it's invaluable. You can set it up, firewall it, and let your developers and
anyone else pound on it with no risks to your inside network.
As with any new technology, there are gotchas and plenty things that need to
be done correctly to avoid coffin corners down the road. Doing domain stuff
can be a bit tricky due to time/Kerberos/reboot issues, but I've done it
successfully.
If all your access is internal, and you already have a VM infrastructure,
you probably won't gain much. It is neat to be able to spin up a
high-performance server in seconds without worrying about hitting your
underlying infrastructure too hard. But that comes with a $ price, too.

For me, the bottom line is that it is definitely worth a look to see if it
solves a problem...

OK. I ran into this a while back. Looked back at your OP. You say you have
large DNS turned off. Where? Is it off on your network gear? We had to kill
it on the ASA/PIX for some clients. Saw the same behavior; DNS would fall
back to the A record rather than the MX...
Check your whole chain for the large DNS settings...

Rack next to them, in a solid gig cisco switch. DNS is set up with two

MX, and what is happening is the Exchange server is falling back to the A

No, DNS from everything else is rock solid.

Steelhead or salmon done in the smoker with a maple ginger teriyaki glaze.
Steaks (fillets or ribeyes) aged at home done on the grill. Got to use the

Got a turkey in the fridge now. Hmm. To do it on the gas grill or smoke it?

Ahhh... Back in the early 70s I lived in northern VA and had just broken up
with a girlfriend. A good friend and I took a drive to Nags Head, NC in
winter just to get away. We went out to a fishing pier. An old rich guy had
rented out the pier for a party and set up a large homemade whole pig
roaster out front. We stayed for 2 days and ate some of the best pig ever.
There was a machete hanging there. You'd open the door, cut off a chunk with
the machete, and eat your fill. Took my mind of that girl that's for sure...

Caught some good fish, too...

~2 hours per machine. Data files and additional programs should be

 Unpack, inventory new hardware

Power up new PC so the image finishes (They are syspreped)

Do an inventory of old system (Software, files, asset tags)

set of health

permissions to the
share and child folders. My question is .will the users have to logout
and login to get
access back after the changes are applied? I am not sure if the security
token assigned
to the users before the change will still be good. As the security
permissions will not
change for the users access to the share and child folders. The change is
to assign access
by group instead of individual user ID.

RE: OT: NTL M and bootable DOS CD

2010-12-27 Thread Charlie Kaiser
So you lay out the security issues and let management decide which is
appropriate. If you document it correctly, then if they approve the NTLM,
they know they are approving an additional security risk. In a regulated
environment, that alone sometimes tips the scales.

You also provide the solution for the desktop team; i.e., utilize current
PE boot media to make network connections etc... By showing that there is
an industry-standard solution, it puts the burden back on them to explain
why they're still using old technology.

And then if management rules against you you flip the bit and move on. :-)
Of course, you keep copies of all the documentation... :-)

I'm definitely going to try and fight this, from a security perspective
it's a no brainer.
The issue will be that the desktop group will say this will push back the
deployment of
existing systems by a month while they engineer a new process. Almost no
way to fight
that unless our group is willing to take over the responsibility of doing
that work, which we
could easily do. Just hate knowing that those guys will put up this road
block on something
that should take them less than a day to do. I'd love for their management
to step in and
say you know what? You are right. we need to redo this process and it's
not going to
take us a month to do it. we'll have it done by end of the week! Never
going to happen.

last

can't
access the new shares. I ask them how they are being accessed. They say
from
a bootable DOS CD. I thought them meant WinPE, so I tested that, and
verified there are no issues. Go back to the desktop guys and they say,
no
it's really DOS 6.22 using NDIS 2.0. So I start looking into it and
found
that the old SMS servers have a GPO setting that allows NTLM
connections,
the rest of the network doesn't. I was not aware of this. Our currently
policy is to allow NTLMv2 only, and refuse LM and NTLM. I ask them if
they
can move to WinPE. They tell me the engineering involved will be too
much
work. So now the question is. do I put up a fight and go to our
Security
group and tell them I want to keep NTLMv2, and have the desktops guys
re-engineer the process? My guess is that I'll be over ruled, and be
forced
to allow NTLM for the new SCCM servers.

I am working at a new client and one of their servers was reporting low
disk space on c:

It is a PE1950 with a PERC controller with a RAID5 array and one virtual
disk split into 2
partitions. The OS is server 2003 r2.

I cleaned up temp files and redirected IIS logs to the other partition and
it now has 10%
free space. The pagefile is 2Gb that will free up a little more but I
didn't have time for
 another reboot.

 Diskmanagement reports that Disk0 is basic and 408.37 Gb , c: 31.86,
e:376.51 Gb. It only
 shows two partitions.

But in the upper section it reports c: as 16.8 Gb. My computer also
shows the same.

Shadowcopy was disabled. I ran Treesize and it reported the volume as 16.8
Gb and didn't
 show anything unusual.

 Any suggestions appreciated.

Well, on the one hand, this is offered when Security Center finds no AV
apps running.

OTOH, our HelpDesk found a root kit detector (both VIPRE and MBytes missed
one). It
is HitManPro. It did NOT detect VIPRE as a running AV application
(although the
 SBAMSvc was running in TaskManager).

VMWare config question

2010-10-20 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've been tasked with installing VMWare server on a client W2K8 server. Plan is
to run one VM that will be a relatively sandboxed WWW/FTP server. Server that
will be the host runs MS CRM and related SQL 2008. SQL is installed on C: but
the datafiles are on D:. No spindle separation of logs/DB. (not my call) 12G
pagefile is on D:. Plenty of disk space on C: and D:, 8 GB ram. C: is a 2-drive
RAID1; D: is a 4-drive RAID5.

I’m trying to decide where to put VMWare and the VM files for best performance.
My google-fu is not getting the job done.

Any recommendations for location or pointers to good documentation of this?

Thanks

re: VMWare config question

2010-10-20 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Thanks for all the replies.

For some reason, they're not getting to my email and I'm viewing this from the
webpage. I've reposted twice; sorry for the dupes.

Unfortunately, I don't get to choose the parts being used here. It has come
down from the client that VMWare server is what is going in. They won't buy
another server for ESXi and the guest must run as a service, so I can't use
workstation.
MS Virtual server has been denied.

So I have to work with what I've got. Given that, any location recommendations?

Thanks.

Re: VMWare config question

2010-10-20 Thread Charlie Kaiser
You'd have to know this client... LOL...

I've been running VMWare server 2 in numerous locations for quite a while now
and its performance and reliability has been quite good, actually. The only
times I've seen trouble with it has been when disk contention rears its ugly
head. Most of the time I've been able to isolate the VMs on separate spindles
and it's worked fine.

But I can't decide here whether to go with the OS drive or the data drive.
Leaning towards the OS drive but not for any real good reason except that the
SQL data and pagefile is on D:...

RE: BES install question

2010-09-15 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Actually, it's more the other way around; it's providing the BESAdmin
account with rights to send as users in the OU. For example, in section A:
you're adding an inherited perm to user accounts below the OU level. You're
allowing BESAdmin to send as any account in that OU. PS: You spelled
identity wrong (indentity).
Section B is providing the same rights but to a specific CN, so BESAdmin
could send as whatever account you specify in CN=.

So you'd want to set the OU in section A to the full DN of the OU where your
blackberry users reside. Let's hope it's a true OU and not a container for
various reasons. So let's say you had an OU named employees where all your
users reside and it's in yourdomain.local. Here's what you'd need:

Add-ADPermission -InheritedObjectType User - InheritanceType Descendents
-ExtendedRights Send-As -User BESAdmin -Identity
OU=employees,DC=yourdomain,DC=local

The BESAdmin account needs that right to be able to do its job within the
mailboxes.

Hope that helps.

the Exchange

do, so I'm not
sure how to fill in the blanks. Can someone take a look and help me?

 Do one of the following:

 a) To set the permissions at the organizational unit level, type
Add-ADPermission -
InheritedObjectType User - InheritanceType Descendents -ExtendedRights
Send-As -
 User BESAdmin -Indentity OU=organizational

Send-As -
 User BESAdmin -Indentity
 CN=common_name,DC=domain_1,DC=domain_2,DC=domain_3 where
domain_1,domain_2, and domain_3 form the name of the domain.

If I'm correct, these commands setup who can Send As the BESAdmin account,

RE: Server list application

2010-09-13 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I just use spreadsheets... Part of my work with any new clients is to create
documentation of the environment so that at least I (if no one else) can
find that info quickly. Name, function, IP, system info, warranty if any,
location, etc. I've gone so far as to put in drive SNs for some clients.
Especially when working remotely all the time, it's nice to be able to pull
up that info even if the server is down...

RE: To be diverse...or not

2010-09-08 Thread Charlie Kaiser
You could go either way. I think that being able to provide diverse
solutions is much better for the client; many clients will balk at using
%vendor% and being able to provide them with an alternative is advantageous.
At the same time, being able to efficiently install and configure a product
saves time/money all the way around.

My philosophy as a consultant is to offer a solution that fits the client
rather than shoehorning them into my paradigm. In some cases this means
AD/multiple servers, in some it's SBS, in some it's hosted exchange. Much of
the decision making has to do with the client's budget and the type of data
they need to protect/access.

By being familiar/proficient with multiple product lines, you become better
able to fit the solution to the client's needs...

Does it make sense to have any diversity in products (AV, patch
management, etc) or is it
better to leverage knowledge? I ask because I would think it makes more
sense to stick
with one product and be pretty much the de-facto expert, but I have found
that having
experience with different AV products (McAfee, Trend, Vipre) at this point
to be
beneficial and doesn't really add any overhead vs. a single product. The
catch is I had
prior experience with Trend Micro at %PriorDayjob% so one client got
that,
%Currentdayjob% has McAfee so I learned that, and Vipre Enterprise came
out so I tried
 that at smaller clients.

I say that to say this: Patching is my current dilemma and I have WSUS
everywhere and
no 3rd party stuff anywhere. If I choose a tool for one place does it make
sense to use
this same tool everywhere else if the price is acceptable to each party
involved? Some
tools are cheaper than others and can save a client money even though they
could afford
the more expensive option, but the cheaper option means I am working with
more than one
tool (which means it could be argued the client ends up spending more due
to my spool up
time to learn a new app). I don't see expanding my client base by more
than a client or
two every other year in the forseeable future.

File server structure and perms

2010-08-09 Thread Charlie Kaiser
I've been tasked with setting up a file server structure for a client. SBS
2008. We normally set up Home, Shared, and Public. Client wants a completely
different paradigm. They want a master folder for each of their clients,
with subfolders below that which have varying permissions. So for example:

Client master folder
-test results
-notes
-estimates
-contracts

Each of the subfolders would have different perms; techs writing data to
test results would not have access to estimates, for example.

They also wish to have a template setup so that each time they add a client,
they can put this structure in place and have the appropriate permissions in
effect.

I don't see a simple way to do this. It looks to be highly IT-intensive,
which is not what we nor the client would like.

It almost sounds more like a sharepoint thing, although I have little
first-hand knowledge of sharepoint deployments.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

RE: backing up too much data

2010-07-28 Thread Charlie Kaiser
My 2 cents...
1. Backup to disk, copies to tape for offsite. This is a MUCH faster process
than straight to tape, especially with remote data. I find removable HDs to
be much faster than tape.
2. Or, offsite should be something like Mozy; a cloud-based offsite.
3. Evaluate which of that 2 tb is archival and which is frequently changing.
My experience is that large datastores like that often have large amounts of
rarely changed data. If that's the case, it can be isolated to a once-a-week
or once-a-month backup, and only the more frequently changed data is backed
up nightly. This process usually results in a reduction of backup size by up
to 60% in my clients.

The whole strategy of taking the data home has been discussed, so I won't go
there.

Now I have a need to replicate via DFS name space a

RE: Do you all like fewer or more servers?

2010-07-19 Thread Charlie Kaiser
My feeling is that the decision should be made on an individual basis. I
don't think I'd make a blanket statement that more servers or less
servers is best. In a small business fewer might be better; in a
high-availability business with a decent IT budget, more might be better,
just as examples.
As an IT pro, part of my job is to evaluate the business and determine the
sweet spot for server implementation. For me, risk management is a big
factor. What is the business' risk tolerance?

VMWare/VS has made a big difference in server volumes, at least physically.
But required availability still rules on deployment considerations. There's
still a single point of hardware failure, so consolidating
DCs/DHCP/file/print/etc isn't much different whether it's virtual or
physical. Vmotion etc can mitigate that if you want to spend the money. My
personal opinion is that utilizing VMWare and putting multiple service
servers on one host is better than buying a bunch of servers. You just have
to plan your availability properly. Consider two VM hosts, with a copy of
the service server on each. Not much different from having a pair of DCs or
whatever. Then there's clustering or DFS or mirroring.

Lots of options/choices. It's up to us to figure out the right ones for each
situation...

I only have a hundred users. Been doing this for about 12
years. I always thought it was better to have more or less
one major server per service. That way, if one of our
services came down or needed work, I wouldn't be taking down
the entire system. I have a buddy with fewer users than me
and he has 20+ servers. Some in the air (virtual), some on
the ground. I have seven servers running. Both of us host our
web services at an outside firm. Both of us use Exchange. An
outside firm says we should go with only a couple of servers.
That sure would make things easier, but.

   Oggetto: Server Disk Imaging

I've been looking for a disk imaging solution for the
servers on our network. They currently are all Dell PowerEdge
servers running Windows 2003. My main goal is to be able to
restore a server quickly in the event of a hardware failure,
like a RAID card failure that hoses the hard drives.

We use Arcserve for doing nightly backups and as a file
by file solution, it's fine. For disaster recovery, it leaves
a lot to be desired. It essentially does a reinstall of the
operating system and then restores from back. As such, it's
 not very fast.

I've tried a number of disk imaging software packages.
They all can create an image of the server system drive while
the server is running and that's great. However, what seems
to always be a weak point is restoring from a boot disk.

All the packages have a utility to create a bootable CD
but they generally have a problem either accessing the RAID
volume or the LAN adapter or both. Whether they use Windows
PXE, Linux or DOS, drivers seem to be a problem. It would
seem logical that these software packages would have a
utility to copy the existing drivers off the system and
incorporate them into the BootDisk but none do that I've found.

The only package I've tried so far that seems to work
with the couple of servers I've been testing on is Acronis
Backup and Recovery for Servers. I'd use this if it weren't
so expensive at roughly $1,000 per server.

Anyone using a disk imaging solution they'd care to recommend?

   Thanks.

If I open a new workbook, format column A as currency, and enter this:
A1: 522.25
A2: -4378.87

Then go to another cell, and enter this formula:
=(A1+A2)
My result is 3856.62, as expected.

You are adding a negative to a positive. You'll get valid results.

Perhaps there's a cell format issue that isn't recognizing the negative
numbers somehow?

RE: DR Plan

2010-06-24 Thread Charlie Kaiser
Actually, far in advance of any of the stuff you've mentioned, a BCP
(Business Continuity Plan) is necessary. Basics include identifying disaster
scenarios and what triggers they have, determining what parts of the
business are the most important to have back up and running quickly (and I'm
not talking about tech here; it's business units); which ones need to be
back up in 24/48/72/240 hrs, where will the business go if the location is
destroyed, which employees will still need to work, how they will
communicate, etc. There are a lot more.
My experience has been that this is one of the tougher things to nail down;
most businesses larger than 50 employees don't have a clue about this stuff.
Once you get everyone together on it, nail down all those parameters, and
get management signoff on it, then you can start dealing with what
data/applications/infrastructure need attention.
The plans I've done in the past focus on tiered recovery; getting the
critical stuff available first and adding to it as time goes on.
I've also found that most businesses are stunned by the costs involved in
recovering their businesses even with long time frames. Thorough planning
and documentation, starting with the business architecture, is critical to
selling management on even the most basic DR plan. As you gather data, the
matrix required for the different scenarios becomes quite complex indeed...

The reality for many businesses becomes exactly what the Dilbert cartoon
shows...

I've never actually had to come up with one before.

There's two major parts, the analysis/cost planning part,
 and the technical/procedural planning part.

   The basics of analysis are:

 A1. Identify resources
A2. Obtain figures for what non-availability of each resource
costs A3. Identify threats to resources (such as disk
failure, building fire, etc.) A4. Identify possible
counter-measures for each threat, and costs of same A5.
Compare cost of downtime with cost of counter-measures,
taking into account the likelihood of each threat. This
tells you what counter-measures are worth it to your situation.

Planning the technical/procedural is also conceptually simple:

B1. Figure out how to do what you decided on in A5 (read the
manual, etc.) B2. Write everything from B1 down B3. Test
everything in B2 B4. Take what you learned in B3 and apply it
 to B2; repeat B2 and B2 as needed B5. Once you've got a good
plan, practice it periodically B6. Keep an eye on everything
and repeat all steps as needed

The devil is in the details, as usual. Entire shelves
worth of books have been written on the subject.

RE: Gotoassist vs LogMeIn

I like logmein because it will survive a logoff or reboot... Makes it much
easier to do unattended stuff...

Hey, guys. since I'm having to support remote users by phone,
I thought I might be able to do a better job if I had some
sort of way to log into the user's computer from remote.
Since I'm behind a firewall and some users may be behind a
router, I figure something like GoToAssist or LogMeIn Rescue
might be the answer. It looks like GTA is less expensive than
LMIR. Any thoughts as to which would be the better option for
a single tech to support lots of remote users?

If they can get it on their monitor, it can leak. Screen capture, digital or

Good stuff but I did forget to add something.

A user taking a screenshot of the spreadsheet, then saving it.
So while they are locked down from doing any mods on the
file, they can always screenshot and retype.

 Plot thickens.

Is my analysis of your current setup correct? Multiple
addresses on the same AD account?
