Amazing the direction this topic went. One of the reasons I use VNC is I
can restrict exactly which IP addresses (mine) the system will accept
connections from.

True.. but consider the average user is probably not going to understand how
to request Remote Assistance. :-) Heck, *I* don't even know how to do it. At
this point, once VNC is installed, all a user has to do is call me and tell
me I'm having trouble with x, can you take a look? I then launch VNC
Viewer, log into their desktop and see what's going on. :-) No action
required on their part. :-)

Not to mention it can also be used to spy on users... I've had to do that
for HR at a previous employer. I had real mixed emotions on that one

If I have a user on the phone I can walk the biggest ID10T I have sending me a

no other issues it just works 100% of the time.

RE: Disappearing program

2009-04-21 Thread Dennis Hoefer
We use remote assistance on a regular basis internally, but only do it as you
describe with VNC, they call us and we initiate the connection. They have to
click one dialog button to ok the connection, and another if we need remote
control of the machine, but I consider that a benefit, we don't have the option
of spying on employees with our normal support tools, nor concerns from them
that we might be doing that. Been awhile, but was all quite easy to set up
through group policy, we just drop employees who we authorize to offer remote
assistance into a security group and give them a shortcut for the command to
launch it.

ID10T: I don't know
Me: Does it say 'error accessing device' or just a bunch or garbled letters or
something?
ID10T: I don't know what it says, I just need you to come look

After another minute I still could not get this user to read what was on the
screen, even character by character and ended up walking to her desk. On the
screen: Invalid system disk because there was a floppy in the floppy drive
and BIOS was set to try boot from that first...ejecting the floppy of course
fixed everything. FORGET trying to explain anything complex like there are

RE: Disappearing program

2009-04-21 Thread Phillip Partipilo
Oh its amazing how many people dont hit F1 and use a program's built in
help. There are times I don't know the answer and that's all I do after
walking to their desk :) Usually gets a funny look on their face.

+1 on the Boss comment. My boss is almost as geeky as I am. fortunately
for me, he needs all his memory space for carpet manufacturing stuff, or I
might not have a job. J
