[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Pine Siskins, Sea Ducks

2010-11-14 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
Norm Klein and I birded all around Sunken Meadow State Park late this morning
thru the early afternoon today.  Overall, it wasn't very birdy.   The highlight
was a flock of ten Pine Siskins that flew over and  landed in the conifers just
east of Field 3.  Soon after, another small flock of Pine Siskins flew over
and started to feed in the pines.  It was nice to actually watch them feed
rather than see them flyby. The only other birds of note were a Greater
Yellowlegs, Great Egret, 12 Hooded Mergansers, 7 Ruddy Ducks, and a female
Bufflehead all on the upper reaches of Sunken Meadow Creek.  Back on Friday(Nov
12) I watched a nice movement of all three species of Scoter on the LI Sound,
as
well as decent numbers of Common and Red-throated Loons, Red-breasted
Mergansers, and a single Common Eider.  As far as landbirds go, 2 American
Pipits, 7+ Eastern Bluebirds(amid the flocks of Robins and
waxwings), several flocks of Cedar Waxwings, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, and Purple
Finch were all observed early Friday morning.

[nysbirds-l] Captree Common Ground Dove--YES

2010-11-14 Thread John Gluth
I saw the COMMON GROUND DOVE late this afternoon (just after 4:00). It was
feeding along the edge of the paved pedestrian path that connects the north
and south parking lots. It was last seen flying across the road into the
setting sun.

The Captree visit wrapped up a full day of birding that started at Plum
Beach in Brooklyn and continue at Fort Tilden, Floyd Bennett Field, and
Jones Beach (west end & Zach's Bay). The weather was beautiful but the
birding was generally slow. I'd hoped to find a Nelson's Sparrow or two
at Plum Beach, but if there were any present they kept out of sight.
Only Song Sparrows revealed themselves. There were 5 Oystercatchers out
on the offshore sandbar and a small raft of Greater Scaup on the bay.
At Fort Tilden the highlights were mostly waterbirds too--good numbers of
all 3 scoter species, 15 flyby Common Eiders, Gannets, and 2 Red-throated
Loons. As far as landbirds go, there were 2 flyover Pipits, 1 flyover
Siskin, and 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

At Floyd Bennett, 4 CATTLE EGRETS were resting/feeding in the field east of
the main runway, opposite Aviator Sports. Two kestrel were also seen, 1 male
and 1 female.

At Jones Beach, I did not see the N. Shrike at the Nature Center, but did
see and hear a WILSON'S SNIPE that lifted out of one of the inter-dune
marshy spots.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 2 Euro Wigeons Patchogue Lake, Suffolk Co.

2010-11-14 Thread Mike
Two male European Wigeon were present near the south end of Patchogue Lake this
morning along with about 100 American Wigeon, several hundred Ruddy Ducks and
smaller numbers of the usual local mix- Shovelers, scaup, Gadwall, RIng-necks
etc. About 10 Pintail were at the north end of the lake, north of Roe Blvd.

Nearby Swan Lake had surprisingly few duck- a couple of American Wigeon and a
few Buffleheads.

[nysbirds-l] Eastern LI: Greater White-fronted and Cackling Geese, Kittiwake, and more

2010-11-14 Thread Seth Ausubel
Brent Bomkamp, Stella Miller and I birded the Towns of Easthampton and
Southampton, Suffolk County, and points further west today. On Further Lane
in Easthampton at about 8:30 a.m., we found 5 Greater White-Fronted Geese.
A bit earlier, Brent spotted two of these birds in flocks of Canada Geese
flying from nearby Hook Pond in the direction of the Further Lane field.
Mecox Inlet (cut closed) produced a Semipalmated Plover. We saw 3 Cattle
Egrets at the Mecox Dairy, and another 2 in Manorville, along the eastbound
service road of Route 27 just west of the Route 51 intersection. Short's
Pond in Scuttlehole was loaded with geese in late morning, including one
"Richardson's" Cackling Goose. At Shinnecock Inlet, an immature
Black-legged Kittiwake was feeding with the Bonaparte's Gull flock off the
jetties, and there were about 200 Common Eiders in the area. We spotted our
first Canvasback (17) of the season on Eastport Pond, and the drake Eurasian
Wigeon continues on Patchogue Lake. Overall, waterfowl numbers were still
quite low.

[nysbirds-l] NYC: Swindler Cove Park, Sat. 13-Nov incl. Oriole & butterfly

2010-11-14 Thread Ben Cacace
Date: Saturday, 13 November 2010 (10:15a-1:10p)
Location: Manhattan - Swindler Cove Park & Sherman Creek
Reported by: Ben Cacace

This upper Manhattan park is situated along the Harlem River at the end of
Dyckman St. & 10th Avenue across the island from Fort Tryon Park.

*BIRDS*: The adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was feeding from sapsucker drill
wells. The bird was seen along the south side of Sherman Creek interacting
with a Yellow-rumped Warbler looking to move the oriole along.

Sightings from the now inactive NYC Bird
Report,
developed by Mike Freeman, are still archived online. Here are the Baltimore
Oriole sightings for
2003-2007from
Central Park, the closest match, showing the bird is nearly annual in
November.

Here's a map of all November sightings submitted to
eBird.orgfor
Baltimore Oriole for the NYC Area (8 counties).

Four new park birds were added to the list: GREAT BLUE HERON (1 juv. & 1
adult), PEREGRINE FALCON, BALTIMORE ORIOLE & a male HOUSE FINCH.

Raptors seen were: 3 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 local juvenile COOPER'S HAWK, 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 5 local RED-TAILED HAWKS including 3 juveniles & 2
adults plus a migrating PEREGRINE FALCON.

*BUTTERFLY*: An orange butterfly landed in the mud of the small freshwater
pond installation. It landed with wings spread showing the tell-tale
subapical dash on the forewing which is absent on the other commas. This was
a "Fall" form QUESTION MARK. Glad I had the time to draw this feature as I
had no clue which it was until I hit the books.

>From 'Butterflies through Binoculars: The East':

2 broods. Late May/late June - mid Oct. 2nd brood overwintering as adults
and flying again next spring, mainly April-May. Occasionally move northward
to southern Manitoba and southern New Brunswick.

2010-11-14 Thread Luke Ormand
In pursuit of crossbills this morning I only came across good numbers of
Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches. A few Northern Harriers were seen by
the Nature Center and Red-Breasted Nuthatches were also plentiful. Along
Ocean Bay Parkway an Osprey was spotted perched. Photos of these birds can

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End...

2010-11-14 Thread Andrew Baksh
I spent a quiet morning at Jones Beach birding around the Coast Guard
Station and the median to West End. The Marbled Godwit continues as well as
a couple of Royal Terns seen on and around the bar near the Coast Guard
Station.

Other notables included 3 Harlequin Ducks, 1 White-winged scoter, 1 Surf
Scoter and 1 Long-tailed Duck all in the same area. A search of the median
with other birders (Sam Janazzo and Sy Schiff) did *not* turn up any
sightings of Crossbills, though we did have decent numbers of Pine Siskins
and American Goldfinches. A surprise showing was a Ring Necked Pheasant
that was flushed as we worked the median.

Good and responsible birding!
