[nysbirds-l] NYBG birds
Went to the NYBG to look for the ravens that are supposed to be there and for any early migrants. No sign of ravens, couldn't find a nest anywhere on the building, or any visible anywhere. I tend to think it was a false report. Not a whole lot around except for many robins and grackles. Did have the pair of Red-tailed Hawks mating near their nest site. Also had 1 Great Blue Heron, 6 Wood Ducks, 2 Northern Shovelers, 2 Canada Geese (one neck banded), and 8 Mallards at Twin Lakes and the river. Had a Hermit Thrush and a few Red-breasted Nuthatches in the Pinetum. Otherwise mostly resident birds. Thought I might get a woodcock or two since they are showing in the area, but no luck. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach area
After taking a friend to the airport I decided to take a quick look in the Jones Beach area for stuff. Not a lot around. Had an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, 6 Black Scoters, and 4 Pintails at the coast guard station. At Pt. Lookout there were many Red-throated Loons. Other than that not much around. At Cammans Pond I had 3 Black-crowned Night-Herons, several shovelers, and two hoodies. At Merrick Rd. Park I had a large colony of 10 Monk Parakeet nests with more than 25+ birds present at the time. I had never noticed those there before. I also hadn't realized how much had changed since Sandy in this area. I hadn't been down here since before then. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] another raven nest
While observing the eagle nest at the Croton station I noticed a pair of ravens flying towards the St. Augustine Church on the other side of the Croton River in Crotonville. As I watched I saw them in turn going in and out of the steeple of the church a few times and also sitting on top of the church. As I figured there was a nest in there I decided to check it out and low and behold there it was in the belfry on top of the bell. They really are nesting all over Westchester now. Pretty cool. I also had a pair with food flying low towards Rte. 1 from the beginning of North Ave. in New Rochelle most likely heading to a yet to be found nest. I decided to take a quick check of where they nested on Rte. 1 in the center of town in 2012, but just remains of the nest were there. Oh well someday I'll find it. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Ravens nesting at NYBG
I just found out from my friend that instead of the owls or redtails nesting on the library building at NYBG there are ravens nesting for the first time there! I will have to go check them out and get some photos. Also, if anyone cares another friend told me the Mandarin Duck is still in Central Park but down in the pond at the southern end. [nysbirds-l] Golden-crowned Sparrow no, Solitaire yes-sorf of
Went to look for the Golden-crowned sparrow in Downsville today with no luck. In fact there were no White-throated sparrows at all anywhere in the area the two hours I was there from about 10:15 to 12 noon or so. There were the usual 4 or 5 tree sparrows and a few juncos at the feeders, but other than that just a few other passerines. Very surprising how little action there was from when we left home to the sparrow spot. No eagles were seen on Airport Road either, just some crows. On the way up on 17 we did see one Bald Eagle and my friends did see a Long-eared owl fly up from the side of the road and into the forest, but I missed it. After that we headed to Copake Falls to see the Townsend's Solitaire. On the way there not much was seen other than some redtails, but we did see a couple of Red-shouldered Hawks briefly. Once in Copake Falls we found the field where the solitaire was supposed to be, which is the first field with a parking lot on the left after coming up from Valley View and turning onto High Valley Rd. from Valley View. It's basically the first large field on the left once on High View. When we got to the field we had three turkeys and met a young man who said he had just heard the bird in the forest at the northeastern corner of the lower field. No luck with the solitaire but did have a few other passerines and an immature Golden Eagle. On the way home we checked out a roadside pond at a farm just north of Rudd Pond Rd. on 22 that was supposed to have a Tundra Swan on it, but no luck there just some geese and Mallards. We did have two adult Bald Eagles and two Mute Swans further down Rudd Pond Rd. on the left in a marshy pond where the road curves right. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Verplank and Croton Pt. birds
Went to Verplank this am to look for eagles and boy was I rewarded. I had ca. 40+ eagles of all ages flying, sitting on the ice, and in trees. Such great birds. So many winter around here now. I love it! Also seen there were a imm. Snow Goose and Peregrine Falcon as well as many Common Mergansers. After seeing the eagles there I went to Croton Pt. Park. Only had three eagles there, two adults and an immature, but the adults gave incredible close looks. Gorgeous. Also seen were a Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Saw-whet Owl, and two Great Horned Owls dueting. So cool. As usual for me no Screech-Owl though:-( Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] extralimital Townsend's Warbler in NJ
Just wanted to let people know there is a male Townsend's Warbler being seen at the Trenton Sewage Plant in Trenton, NJ, just south of Rte. 29 and east of the Delaware River, as of 10am this morning. I went to see it today and had to wait an hour or two but it was worth it. Finally got my nemesis Townsend's in NJ, Yeah! Also there are at least 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallows, 1 each Palm and Pine Warbler, many Yellow-rumped Warblers, an Eastern Phoebe, dozens of both kinglets, many Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows, a fly over Bald Eagle, and the usuals. Also had a very sad looking Woodchuck trying to eat the frozen lawn. Not looking long for this world:-( Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Shawangunk NWR birds
Went to Shawangunk Grasslands N.W.R. this afternoon and it was worth the trip. Almost as soon as we got there around 2 pm or so the fields were a buzz with raptors. Had at least 6 Short-eared Owls, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 4+ Red-tailed Hawks, and 7+ Northern Harriers including one adult male. The owls and harriers gave excellent views the whole time we were there. And to top it off we had a Barred Owl in a tree next to the exit road just past the feeders as we left. We also had 3 female Common Goldeneyes along Lippincott Rd. in Wallkill as well as 40+ Turkeys along the same road. Also seen today was a Barred Owl first thing this morning across from my friends home at The Springs along the edge of a field in Purchase. Andrew Andrew v. F. Love is in the air again at FDR Park in Yorktown. I passed by the Bald Eagle nest along the Taconic and saw one adult fly off the nest and the other sitting in the nest. [nysbirds-l] Cool predator-prey action
Today when I was leaving my doctors appointment at DOCS on Central Ave. in Yonkers I witnessed some cool predator-prey action. I was sitting in my car and all of a sudden I saw this blur of a large bird go behind the car parked to the left of me about seven spaces over and an immature Red-tailed Hawk and European Starling came tumbling across the parking lot from behind one of the cars. The hawk missed the starling but then both flew less than a foot above the ground and under the two cars at which point they popped out right to the side of my car and landed in front of my car. I couldn't see them so slowly got out of my car to try to get a view. At that point the redtail flew up in front of me about five feet away with the starling in its talons and up and over the fence and into the woods and out of view. All this happened in less than a couple of minutes. I've seen such behavior before but never so close and never with a starling. Quite exciting! Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Wallkill River birds and extralimital Black Phoebe
Went to Liberty Loop Trail and Winding River Trail at Wallkill River NWR today to look for the Say's Phoebe. No phoebe or many other birds because of the fog but did have several American Tree Sparrows, a male Kestrel, a possible Rough-legged Hawk and a few other birds. In the morning I was down in Hainesville, NJ, looking for the Black Phoebe seen there since last friday. I missed it last sunday, but found it first thing this morning about 8:20 by the dam outflow and watched it vocalizing and moving low around the edge of the Hainesville WMA lake and then flying out onto the ice and then across to the far side where it disappeared until about 11:30 when it reappeared at the dam area again and then made its way across the street to the marsh where it stayed until I left about 12:30pm and gave constant great views. A wonderful bird. Only the 4 or 5th siting this far east and I believe the first away from Florida from what others said. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Golden-crowned Sparrow and Say's Phoebe yes
I know it's been posted by Isaac, but just wanted to say the Golden-crowned was seen where Isaac said and at the feeders shortly after sunrise at 22 Depot St. Also seen while waiting for the sparrow were 2 Bald Eagles, an imm. and adult as well as a Pileated Woodpecker. Later nearby on Airport Rd. off of Rte. 30 I had at least 4 more eagles, 2 adults and 2 imm. plus 6+ Common Ravens, but no Golden Eagle. On the way home I stopped at Wallkill River N.W.R. and saw the Say's Phoebe north of Oil City/State Line Rd. along the Winding River Trail. It was far out on the right past the picnic tables about 150-200feet or so. Many of the people who were at the sparrow were there too:-) Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Barred Owl incursion and mergs
As seen in NYC and CT there really does seem to be an incursion of Barred Owls in the northeast. Unfortunately I'm not seeing any live ones. Today on the Taconic Parkway south of Rte. 6 in a 2 or so mile stretch I had two dead Barred Owls on the roadside on the south bound lanes and one on the north bound side. Very sad to see, but not unexpected. Also, the Common Mergansers are back in full force on the Grassy Sprain Reservoir on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers. I always like seeing those big flocks there every winter, though I wish they stayed longer. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] possible pale Gyrfalcon
My friend was driving along the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers a day or two ago and saw what she thought to be a possible pale Gyrfalcon sitting on the fence on the northbound side near the Jackson Ave. exit. She said it seemed paler and bigger than a redtail and seemed to sit more upright. So just a heads up to a possible Gyr in the area. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Mandarin Duck and siskins
I just had some siskins over my house in Yonkers for a new yard bird. Also, I was just informed of a Mandarin Duck in a pond on the Winged Foot C.C. in Mamaroneck. Unfortunately it's not viewable except by members. I was told it escaped from a guy who lives adjacent to the club and who has many exotic ducks on his property. He also evidently releases a lot of pheasants in the area too. I bet this is where these Mandarins are coming from in the area. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] extralimital spoonbill and whistling ducks in NJ
Hi all, Just to let people know I saw 10 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks and an immature Roseate Spoonbill in NJ this morning. I wonder if the ducks on LI are strays from this flock since these were only an hour or so away and have been there about a week or so. The ducks were in Monroe Twp. and the spoonbill was at Brigantine NWR. The ducks were seen as of about 5:30am and the spoonbill as of 8:40am. Also seen were several Clapper Rails, 3 Blue Grosbeaks, and 2 Whimbrels along with the usuals. Directions can be found on the NJ listserv or from me if interested. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Liberty Loop Trail, Wallkill River NWR
I spent the day today at Wallkill River NWR and started early at the Liberty Loop Trail. I hadn't been there at this time of year in a long time, probably not since I was doing inventories there in the early 2000's. I was pleased to see how many cool birds were now breeding there that I didn't find in the early 2000's. I had several Least Bitterns, at least 3 families of Pied-billed Grebes, several American Coots including one family, and at least three pairs of Common Gallinules including one family with 7 or 8 chicks. Also some regular breeders with families: two or three Wood Duck females with their many ducklings and a Mute Swan pair with five cygnets. There were also several Green Herons in the area which I assume were nesting too. Very cool to see these rare and not so rare breeders with families at the refuge. They really have done a wonderful job there. I just hope the grassland birds that were nesting at LLT moved to other grasslands in the refuge since it's mostly wetland now. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Kites everywhere!
It's interesting the number of Mississippi Kites being reported in the last two days in NY, RI, and CT. Yesterday two were in CT, two in RI, and one on LI reported all within an hour of each other and then the one now on LI. Hopefully they are going to be nesting. It's a good sign that two of the reports were of pairs. This is the greatest number I remember being reported so close together in the area. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Central Park birds
I was in Central Park this am for the Japan Day festivities and to try for the continuing Kirtland's Warbler. I got the warbler at 8:15am at the usual spot on West Drive just north of 91st. next to the reservoir. It gave wonderful close views of course because I left my camera in the car. While waiting for the warbler I also had some Eastern Pewees, a probable Least Flycatcher, a gorgeous male Bay-breasted Warbler, plus many of the usual warbler species being seen. After the JD festivities I took a stroll around that area and the Ramble and had a wonderful male Cape May Warbler singing from a lone fir tree, several Canada Warblers, 2 Wilson's Warblers, a couple of Indigo Buntings, plus many of the warbler species being seen. Even with the miserable weather it was a very good day bird wise. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Swifts in the chimney
I was out in my yard caring for my plants and I heard some faint chittering coming from the unused chimney in my house. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first but then realized it was in the chimney! [nysbirds-l] Mourning Dove nest
I had a Mourning Dove pair on their nest yesterday at my Dad's place in Bronxville. I think that's the earliest I've seen one. Poor things built the nest in a spruce right by one of those annoying very bright LED security lights beaming down on them all night. Cool stuff. I think that's also the earliest I've seen a passerine nest. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Are the Golden Eagles still at Stissing Mtn?
I was wondering if the Golden Eagles are still wintering around Stissing Mountain. I haven't seen any reports in a long time from there so was wondering. I was there on saturday and yesterday and had an adult and two juvenile bald eagles on and adjacent to Conklin Hill and there's a nest of theirs that's in the area so thought maybe they are keeping the goldens away now since they are more dominant and breeding in the area. [nysbirds-l] In memorium: The Carolina Parakeet
This email is in memorial to the Carolina Parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) on the 100th anniversary, today 2/21/18, of its official extinction. Since it doesn't get the acknowledgement it deserves as did the Passenger Pigeon on its anniversary, I wanted to at least say something in memorium. Not only is it my favorite bird, but it was an extraordinary species that was our only resident Psittacine and a unique and gorgeous animal. What a wonder it must have been to have seen the huge flocks of thousands zipping through the trees of the great southern swamps back in the day. Or to have them roosting under the eaves of your home, building, or shed for the evening. I can only imagine how cool it was to see them at dusk flying to their roosts by the dozens into large cavities of sycamores, bald cypresses, and other giants of the time. Every time I see a remnant monstrous tree in the south I imagine how many parakeets might have been feeding on its fruits or roosting in one of its gnarled cavities. When I see flocks of introduced Monk Parakeets in the northeast I pretend they are a flock of Carolina Parakeets, being around the same size and mostly the same color. They occasionally appeared this far north as vagrants to the few who actually appreciated them for the wonderful birds they were. When I go to a museum or see an article, photo, or book (the few that are out there), I snap it up to add to my collection of memorabilia of this parakeet. If only zoos back in the 19th century had tried to save them by breeding them in captivity, since they bred readily, we could most likely have had them coursing through our forests today. May they rest in piece and nobody forget them, Andrew Andrew v. F.
