[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Red Phalarope

2015-07-23 Thread AndyatWH
When saw that this bird was seen today at Jones Beach at the West End
parking lot, area on the bay side,I decided to take the road trip from
Westhampton this afternoon to see if I might find it. This was my second
unsucessful trip.

Unfortunately, when I got to the East End Ocean Parkway, I found there was
a State Trouper preventing any motorists to drive futher east. I was not
happy about this, having come all this way. in the late afternoon to look for
the bird. I planned o arrive after 4 PM snce park charges $8.00 to
park your car from 8 AM to 4PM (So I go birding to arrive earlier than 8 or
after 4)

When I tried to find out why they would not let me drive further East on
the parkway, they told me that there was some special event scheduled, (
Turns out filming a TV Advertisement comercial.)

About 5 PM they started o let us continue to East End I never did see the
Phalarope.

I think the park should be limited for public use not comercials.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Letter to Riverhead Town Board RE- EPCAL by Luke Orman

2015-04-17 Thread AndyatWH
Thank you Luke, for sending this well done letter to Riverhead Town Board.

I have been bothered about this for some time. When I inquired, of the
Riverhead Police Dept., I was told that if I wanted to have permission to go
birding in the parks and town open fields all I needed to get was a hunting
license. It seems that when one has a hunting license you have permission
to go anywhere in and around these public areas that traditionally permitted
hunting.

Is not this insane? It simply reflects the traditional nature of this
Suffolk area population and its politics.

We could and should get this up dated changed! It is out of date!! There
are a lot more people birding out here than hunting and they all probably
vote more than the remaining number of traditional hunters.

All:

I have drafted and sent a letter to the Riverhead Town Board regarding
runway access to EPCAL and have included some of my favorite images. The
letter and images can be seen by viewing the link below. I encourage all of
you who have visited EPCAL over the years to contact the Board. If our
voices are strong, we cannot be ignored. Intimidating people who are birding
on
public land with the threat of JAIL is absurd and preposterous. Thank you.

On a note related to actual birds, I saw a Merlin devouring a small bird
this morning while on my morning run in East Patchogue.

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl on Dune Road, bayside,Tiana Beach, Long Island

2015-04-08 Thread AndyatWH
The Snowy Owl is still here today, perched on the hunting blind as per
photos below. I believe this is the same Snowy Owl I have seen in the same
place East of Tianna bayside parking lot, for the past several years. The bird
is about 1/4 miles bayside north off Dune Road, so one will need
glass/scope to see it. I believe it will probably be at the same place for at
least a week if this is the same usual bird I have seen each year on this
blind so if interested you will probably have time to locate it.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 11/8: Harlequin Duck - Orient Point (Suffolk Co.)

2014-11-08 Thread AndyatWH
I was at Orient Point Park today on the Park access road from 2;30 to
3;30. I usually see black and surf, but did not see scoters at all. much
less a flock of white winged with the the Harliequin. Just DC Cormorants, and
buffleheads. ( N0 eiders yet)

Got good looks and pictures of at a . flock (30?) of cedar waxwings
which stayed on trees and drank from the road rain puddles together with
robins, on the dirt road going to the actual point (until a car came by
after half hour.and chased them.). I will bet they will be back tomorrow. I
also
saw a few black scoters at the point

[nysbirds-l] Birding at Forest Park, Queens County, LI, NY

2014-05-25 Thread AndyatWH
Traditionally Forest Park has been one of the better places to see
migratory birds in May. I did see quite a few two weeks ago, including quite
a
few warblers, when I visited the fresh water ponds, where the birds visit
and one can usually see them up close and get nice pictures.

I thought I would take the opportunity of the long weekend to drive in
from Westhampton LI, on Sunday since I figured the car traffic would be low,
with fewer cars in the middle of the holiday weekend, (It usually takes 1
1/2 hours or more to drive in and more to return East.)

I was right about the traffic,I made great time to get there and return.
However the birds were very sparse. I saw only one warbler (Water thrush)
and did not get a decent look either. Only bird worth mentioning was a
immature Red Tail Hawk, who spent hours there, even taking a bath before going
back to roust up in the trees.

This concerns me because I understood that the migration was later this
year because of the cold spring, and we could expect greater migration later.
But,
based on my observations so far, the bird migration is way off in numbers
this year.

I would appreciate some comments on this (and maybe suggestions).

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbirds still in Cutchogue, LI

2013-11-18 Thread AndyatWH
Since I was in Riverhead this afternoon, I thought I would go out to
Cutchogue and see if the birds were still around.

I went north on Cox Lane to the end(There is no sign post indicating
Oregon Rd. so I turned Left (West), and after a few hundred yards, I saw two
cars parked off the road on the right (North) and two men standing a little
up a private road, with binoculars and a scope,so I stoped there and asked
if they saw anything, and they showed me the two Western Kingbirds, sitting
on separate metal posts in the plowed field, only about 50 yards away.
Obviously we had great views for a couple of hours as they stayed right in
this
area, sometimes closer and some time further, perching on the fence posts,
flying out to try and catch something, sometimes on the plowed field, and
flew back. While one bird went to sit on trees about 200 yards north, they
always came back.

In fact they were still there when the sun started to go down, and
hopefully will be there tomorrow.

The flock of white crowned sparrows were also there,in the bushes, on the
ground and the trees.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaia Bay Wild Life Preserve

2013-11-09 Thread AndyatWH

The West Pond birding was a disaster today compared to what it was for
many years! There were no birds at all in the west pond except one lonely
Great Egret! Not even ruddy ducks, blacks, mallards, swans or brant! ( There
were about 30 Brant however in marshes in the bay).

Since Sandy washed through, filling the west bay with salt water, nothing
has been done to repair the breech and the pathway going around the pond,
so it can go back to be a fresh water pond, and so we can again walk
around the pond and see the nature and birds.

How long are they going to wait? I hope soon, so it can fill up with fresh
water over the winter!

The East Pond, which still has fresh water, still has also birds. Besides
many Ruddy Ducks, Canada goose, several swans, and a few black ducks and
mallards, we saw about four green winged teals, several pied-billed grebes,
two greater yellow legs, and then 27 Snow Goose flew in with one Blue
Goose (dark morf) while we watched from the east end of Big John's path.
There
was nothing much more at the south end of the East Pond, and I never got
to the North end as it was getting dark. The Barn Owl is still in the owl
box at Big John's pond.

Does any one know anyone who is responsible for fixing the breech? It is
not a big project and It is a shame to leave it like it is. I heard an
excuse that the authorities do not want to fix it for fear that it will breech
again!! But so may the rest of Long Island, (my home was flooded too),but we
are all still fixing our flooded homes on the south shore because we live
here!

[nysbirds-l] Monarch Butterlies

2013-10-08 Thread AndyatWH
I have heard comments on the decline of quantities Monarch Butterflies
this fall. I have also found a great decrease in the migration in the east
on Long Island. The fall monarch nature trips also have found very few.

I would appreciate it, if someone who is knowledgeable about this would
care to comment. I have heard all kinds of speculations from birders, but no
comments from those who study this, and are knowledgeable about the reason
and have statistics showing how much this Monarch Butterfly migration is
much lower than previous years. In fact I think the migration has been lower
every recent year, but this year is the worst.

Thanks for your input, I realize this is not birding, but I think it is of
interest to birders.

I found 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers,next to a resting Golden plover and two

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Fwd: Upland Sandpiper, Suffolk County, August 10th

2013-08-10 Thread AndyatWH
I went to see this bird about 2:30 PM, but it is no longer there.

I spoke to the farmer who owns the sod farm, and he told me while there
were a group of birders looking a couple of hours ago, but since then he has
been fertilizing the sod field and the birds have flown away. Too bad!

[nysbirds-l] Ponquogue Bridge and Tiana Beach

2013-08-08 Thread AndyatWH
I went east on dune road, and although there were a number of shore birds
at the Tiana "bay side" sandy beach, the numbers and varieties of shore
birds and terns were down. Perhaps because I saw some people using fishing
nets there to catch bait, and also a sailboat group pulled in to the
beach,(which is a good " pull in" sandy beach to explore and rest.)

The royal terns and the black skimmers were still there in lesser numbers
but shore birds and terns were not in the numbers and variety as
previously.( I would recommend going there early in the morning to avoid beach
goers.)

On the plus side, I went to Ponquogue Bridge, where on the shore on the
east side of the parking lot I saw an Avocet at 5 PM right on the edge of
the shore. I took some fairly decent pictures, if anyone would like me to
send them via E Mail.

[nysbirds-l] Epcot, Riverhead, Long Island

2013-06-28 Thread AndyatWH
I went over to EPCOT today to check on the birds (and to photo the wild
flowers in the tan, red, green, yellow grassy plains).

I saw Grasshoper Sparrow, heard several (8) Eastern Meadow-larks singing
and got picture of two males, saw a dozen vultures soaring over the open
grass fields for an hour, 3 Red tail Hawks, several field sparrows, chipping
sparrows,

What is interesting is that the EPCOT air field is no longer storing flood
damaged SANDY cars, and the air field runways are now open in the west (
and East?) so one can drive on the runways and view birds in the fields.

[nysbirds-l] Hunters Gardens, Eastport, Long Island

2013-05-17 Thread AndyatWH
I have been going to see the birds at Hunters Gardens for about 20 years,
It was great for warblers, and many others during migration, with older hard
wood forest, great under-story and spring-fed ponds. There were a group of
local fishermen and hunters who used to meet at Hunters Gardens and have an
out-door fire and cook out with eels, lobsters, crabs and fish (and liquid
libations). This started years ago,and there is a stone monument where
they traditionally gathered, but now there are not many members left, and to
the best of my knowledge,( with the road barriers), they are discontinuing
this tradition. Today there were no signs of any recent cook out ( burnt
logs, rubbish, food) at the usual place.

A couple of years ago, some one killed a girl back on the dirt roads back
in these woods, so Suffolk County decided to barricade the entrances to the
old dirt roads to prevent visitors (Birders?) driving cars on dirt roads
that ran through the woods. Roads were originally made to cut lumber (and go
 hunting).

I understand that now hunters can still get car access during the
hunting season, they take down the barriers and let any cars drive in with a
hunting license (But not birders during migration?)

It is a long walk into Hunters Gardens without car access, but based on
Eric Salzman's birding report of May 16, I went there today in the
afternoon.It is quite a walk,next time I think I will take a bike.

Contrary to his report there were very few birds on the way in and at
Hunters Gardens, certainly no "fall out". There were no warblers flitting from
tree top to tree top, not much other birds either. It was very quiet,I
could hear very few birds.

At the water holes. there was nothing to hear or see. I counted the usual
towhees, cat birds, only a couple of ovenbirds (heard not seen),baltimore
oriole,cardinal,chipping sparrow,chickadees,titmice,robins,pine warbler,
yellow warbler, blue jay,red-bellied woodpecker, flicker, and a veery. (this
was my best bird)

Just to let you know in case you are thinking of making the trip.

[nysbirds-l] Black (Turkey) Vultures on Long Island

2013-05-02 Thread AndyatWH
I am sorry for my error. These were not all Black Vultures, most of them
were immature Turkey Vultures, which have a similar dark gray head, but when
perched closer you can see that the Turkey Vulture has a browner feather
tinge, different head and bill shape. (And some of my close-up even had the
beginning of a red tinge on the face, which I ignored) The two species are
often seen together, and in this case I believe that this was a fact, but I,
in my enthusiasm to get close and take good pictures, did not note that
there might be two different some what similar species, and only took close
ups of the immature Turkey Vultures, based on the gray face.

I have several pictures of the birds on the ground at a distance, but it
is hard to tell which is which, in total of eight. However, when most
birds took off, I took flight pictures, and a couple birds show the white base
in the outer primaries on the wings, diagnostic of Black Vultures.

So, I think there were probably a couple of Black Vultures present, but
most were immature Turkey Vultures, especially the close up turkey pictures
taken.

I do want to thank those birders who sent kind and helpful remarks which
I received about my wrong identification, which became evident to those who
asked me to send pictures. It seems to me there should be a standard way of
us single birders being able to send pictures to verify
sightings, particularly when you can not have two people ID the sighting.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vultures on Long Island

2013-05-01 Thread AndyatWH
I went over to visit the North Fork Reserve, just East of Riverhead, based
on the report of the good variety of birds seen there. i did not get
there until after 3 PM, but there simply was not seen any of the interesting
birds reported. Three Red Tail hawks but none of the other reported
varieties.

However, I did see, photograph and watch for an hour a flock of 8 Black
Vultures resting on the fields to the West of the main road going in.

I first photographed them at a distance, but as I approached them, I kept
taking photos until I was about 15 yards away. Several of them flew off as
I approached even closer, and I took pictures of them flying to show their
distinctive wing patterns. But two of them stayed, as they were busy
feeding on an animal.
(I wonder if anyone can tell me if Black Vultures catch and kill their
prey, or if they only feed on dead animals?)

I kept taking pictures to see if I could determine what kind of animal,
as it was very furry, and bloody, and about two feet long. ( I anyone wants
me to send pictures which are hard to identify, I would be happy to do so).
This is the first time I saw Black Vultures on Long Island and so many!
Turkey Vultures also used to be rare, but not rare any longer.

Good birding to all!

Yesterday, at Massapequa , Long Island, about 5 PM, next to where the

Re: [nysbirds-l] E.Hampton Blue-winged Teal- Yes

2013-03-28 Thread AndyatWH
I went to East Hampton today about 5 PM to see the Blue Winged Teals,
reported today, and was not disappointed. Surprised is a better word. When I got

there there was a Great Blue Heron, standing in water in what appeared to
be a construction site, just north of the Nature Conservancy Offices on RTe
114. This was a excavation with sand pits, for what appears to be a new
building site. There were several water ponds at the bottom apparently from
the rain we have had (Sandy). I saw ducks in the water, and when I got closer
(scared the Great Blue) I found they were indeed the Blue Winged Teals!
They were feeding constantly, with their heads down, and I wonder what they
could find to eat in a construction sand pit! They stayed after I left,
and I got good pictures, but I consider these fairly rare on Long Island, and
wonder why they were in a rain pool in a sand pit! Eating what? If you are
near it is worth a look!

The bird apparently was on the Ocean side of Cupsogue, and disappeared
several hours ago. Just to let you know because the beach parking lot is very

[nysbirds-l] Birds at Mecox Bay, Long island

Hugh McGuiness reported a large number of sandpipers on the sand flats, I
was at the same area at roughly the same time, and had also very good looks
at a Whimbrel, and took some nice pictures( if anyone wishes to see them).
The bird was on the West side of the flats, while the sandpipers and Gulls
were on the East.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] North Fork Preserve

2012-05-11 Thread AndyatWH
I went birding at the North Fork Preserve this afternoon after 2 PM I did
not find any ducks or wading birds at the much less Snipes at any of the
ponds.( There are at least 6 vernal ponds in this new park) There is a
pond I call it the Snipes pond, close to where you enter since there were 5
Wilson's Snipes there a couple of weeks ago (when there was no rain, and the
pond was very low,) as well as Greater, Lesser yellowlegs sandpipers and
green winged teal and mallard and black ducks. Now there are none of
these since the pond is full of water. ( And maybe because more people are
looking there)

However, I took the occasion to drive all around the area to check out what
was there. There were Yellow Warblers and Yellow Rump, and several other
warblers, but they were very hard to see and identify because of the
leaves. (I have to get better on ID by songs.)

The good news is that as I was going through the fields ( and there are a
lot of fields as well as deep thickets of woods and vernal ponds), I noted
that there were an extraordinary number of Red-wing Black-birds in the
fields. These fields were apparently farms that have been let to grow over.
Looking at them I saw a field bird that looked like a Bobolink, but it flew
before I could take a picture. I have not seen any Bobolinks on Long Island
before. Later I went to Snipe's pond, and looking across the fields, sitting
on top of a large tree was a black bird, singing like I never heard a red
winged, starling,or grackle sing. I took a look in my binocks, and yes, it was
a Bobolink!! I took some pictures using my "point and shot "camera if any
one wants to see an amatuer picture.

(Apparently we now have bobolinks again on Long Island!!)

[nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2012-05-01 Thread AndyatWH
According to my experience birding on Eastern Long Island,in the past
Turkey Vultures have been fairly rare. However yesterday I saw a flock of 9
Vultures over the farm fields off Edwards Ave. in Calverton. I took several
pictures as they circled around and moved gradually north. Do Turkey vultures
usually fly directly north as they migrate, or do they occasionally stay a
while, circle and hover, as these did, slowly working their way North?

Just wondering if they might be staying on Long Island for a while.

Thanks for your comments.

[nysbirds-l] Spring Buirding Suffolk County Long Island

2012-04-05 Thread AndyatWH
I went to check out the spring birding at Hunters Garden off Rte 51
Eastport, and was surprised to see that they have put a yellow metal barrier
across the entrance so that one can no longer drive in to view the birds.

I do not know why they decided to close this off (maybe because of Motor
bikes or non permit drivers) but Hunters Garden has been one of the better
spots to bird, since it has tall old growth trees ( rare in the pine
barrens) and springs with small swamp ponds. Over the years we have seen a
great
variety of birds there

This area was also used for many years by a local group of Moriches Bay
fishermen, who hosted a cookout every year around memorial day (ells, clams,
shell fish, and traditional libations) and have a memorial monument there.
They also used to maintain the dirt road to it, and the circular open
camp area. (Where are they are going to meet now? Or are they phased out due
to poor bay claming?

For the benefit of our local birders I am glad to report that when I went
over to Quogue Wildlife tonight at 5 PM there was a flock of various
Warblers in the tree area next to the bird cages. Along with a male and a
female
Wood Duck in the water by the cages, with the other mallard & black
ducks, ( & Resident Snow Goose), Red-bellied woodpecker, downey woodpeckers,
identified pine, palm, yellow-throated warblers, other warblers not clearly
identified. Spring has arrived!!

Andy Murphy

Thanks to those who responded to my sighting of mourning warbler at Alley
Pond Park with suggestions. I still believe it was a mourning warbler,
nothing else fits my sighting.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond, Queens County, Long Island

2012-04-04 Thread AndyatWH
Saw the E mail there were warblers at Alley Pond, but today there was not
much unusual birds to be seen.

However, I saw what I am quite sure was an immature male Morning Warbler
in the brush. The bird was on the ground, or perched low, and I spent about
20 minutes watching it, trying to photo and figure out what it was. It was
only about 30 feet away, and did not move or fly actively, spending most
of the time perched in the low brush or on the ground, occasionally
scratching the ground. I am not too familiar with Alley Pond Park, but the bird
 was
off the walk way going south to the pond, at to the right of top of a long
flight of stairs.

I know this bird is not supposed to be here this early spring, but with
lack of a wing bars,no eye stripe, no discernable eye ring, olive greenish
back, plain belly with a trace of spots marking on its chest, I don't what
else it could be.

[nysbirds-l] Birding in Sufolk County Long Island

2012-03-30 Thread AndyatWH
I thought it might be helpful if I gave a report on birds sightings for
those who plan to go over the weekend as follows:

With regard to the Turkey Vultures, I have seen several in the last week.
They are not so rare as they were.

I went to the Crescent Duck Farm off Riverhead bypass Hubbards road to
Abequogue (?) saw 3 green wing teal, 2 shovelers, 4 lesser yellow legs, 1
osprey, 1 lesser scaup, several mallard, and a wilson snipe.( The snipe was
kind enough to let me take some nice pictures). The duck farm does
smell,so avoid it if sensitive.

I went to the Quogue Wildlife preserve, and saw Wood Ducks in the creek
south of the bridge in back of the museum. (They were also seen on the north
ice pond the day before.) Saw a very friendly Snow Goose next to the cages of
wild birds (he let me get within 6 ft. to take pictures) but when I
checked with Mike Nelson, (the curator),he told me the snow goose was injured,
cared for, and now left there since he can not fly properly, and wanders
around with the canada geese. He also told me of the great horned owl that is
nesting on an osprey nest across the street in an area called fairy dell,
but the fairy dell walk is under repair so you can not go in as it is fenced
and locked. However one can see it from the road at the bridge. I saw it
there about 400 yards away facing away, so to get a better look I parked on
meeting house road on the other side of the creek, walked through the woods
to the creek, about 200 yards away and got a nice picture of full face.

However, when I went back to my car parked along side of the road, I placed
my scope on the ground outside of the car ( I think), as I packed my gear,
then got in and drove off. Later, about an hour, I looked for it and
found the scope missing. I went back and searched every where I had been but
could not find it. I left word at Quogue Wildlife in case an honest soul
would report it, but no luck so far (It was a Kowa in case you find it)

I have been praying for St. Anthony to find it or get me a new one. I will
let you know how I make out.

[nysbirds-l] Fire Island Birds,Long Island

2012-02-22 Thread AndyatWH
In my E Mail of Feb. 19 I mentioned that I saw a red-necked grebe in the
ocean off the beach. Bob Radamo sent me a diplomatic e-mail, and I double
checked my pictures. Despite what I thought I saw, yellow longer bill, bigger
size, coloration, and the fact that it did not act like a horned grebe (
not constantly diving and moving) it was indeed a Horned Grebe. Sorry for the

[nysbirds-l] Fire Island Ocean birds

2012-02-19 Thread AndyatWH
I drove to Smith Point Park( Suffolk County Long Island) today to renew my
permit to drive on the beach this year so as to do a little surf fishing
and birding ( the Ocean is beautiful along the beach) but they did not have
these 2012 permits ready yet, so last year's permits were still good.
I drove from Smith Point, East to Moriches Inlet (5 miles?) right along
the shore and saw about 15 Black Scoters, 4 Surf Scoters, !2 Long-tail
ducks,3 Red-throated Loons, 1 Common Loon,1 Red-necked Grebe,15 Sanderlings,
and
to my surprise a Male Green-winged Teal about 30 yards off in the
ocean, just the other side of the breakers. I took pictures of all of these,
some
good ,some not so good. I do not yet know how to put them up on site on the
internet for general viewing, but if anyone wants a picture, I can E-Mail to
you.
The Green-winged teal was still there when I drove back west from the
Inlet to Smith Point.

Yesterday,April 16, after 4 PM as I drove East from Quogue, I saw 17 ()
Yellowlegs TOGETHER in a small pond on the bay side just east of Quogue,
in addition to several I saw along the ditches going east.
Going further east, last road to the right to the ocean ( with a gate),I
saw 5 Surf Scoters just over the surf and a flock of about 30 Black Scoters
flying East.
At Shinnecock Inlet, there were about 30 Common Eider in the ocean,200
yards out, also a red-throated loon and 3 Gannets.

There have been 20 Common Eider, East of Ponquogue Bridge,in the bay NEXT
TO THE SANDBAR, where I have been seeing them for the past week. Also
about 8 Oystercatchers in the bay.

[nysbirds-l] Swan Lake, Patchogue, LI, NY

2011-01-22 Thread AndyatWH
Yesterday, ( Saturday) I went to Swan Lake, East of Patchogue, off Montauk
Highway to check on the Ducks. There is always a good assortment there, as
the pond does not usually freeze over, and it is quite shallow, and Lake
Road runs along the East Side of the pond with space to park and check them
out, especially in the morning with the sun on your back. ( For those who
are not familiar with this favorite place.)

I was lucky to see two Trumpeter Swans at the North end, a Red Head Duck at
the south end, many other more common species of ducks ..black,
mallard,ring-necked,ruddys,gadwalls (many up close), american widgeons,,lesser
scaup
and greater scaup, northern shovelers, hooded mergansers, buffleheads,
coots, great blue heron, and mute swans. And domestic ducks and some odd black
and white ducks that were the "products of a mixed marriage". No wood
ducks. No pied-billed grebes either.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Birds for the weekend

2010-11-12 Thread AndyatWH
There has been a male Harlequin Duck on the north side of Dune Road about
a mile West of Ponquogue Park for the past two weeks. He usually sits on or
near the rocks to the right of the Barge with the name of "Chesterfield
Associates" on the bay side near where they are pumping sand out on to the
beach. Some times he is in the inlet..
There was well over a hundred Snow Geese at the East pond at Jamaica
including a Dark Adult Snow Goose. Many assorted ducks on both East and West
ponds. Good Birding for the weekend.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Eared Grebes

2010-04-10 Thread AndyatWH
Today I went to Jamaica Wild Life (Queens, L.I.) and saw several Grebes in
the bay south of the Terapin Trail. Several were Horned Grebes but also I
saw a grebe with a longer thinner bill and more peaked crown. It was quite
different from the Horned Grebes which I am familiar with out Eastern Long
Island, I wonder if someone might check and verify what I believe are
Eared Grebes. Thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Calverton Grumund Air field Long Island

2010-03-23 Thread AndyatWH
I went over to the air field to look over the grass lands at the air fields
for Short eared Owls, Hawks etc.over the weekend. Saw at least two
harriers and Red Tailed hawks, but no owls. I did see a flock of 6 or 7
Meadowlarks. I got pretty good looks in my scope but when I drove closer to
take
pictures I was yelled at by someone who told me I should not be on the grass.
I asked him why not,and he told me that the town of Riverhead prohibits
this because of the threat to the Salamanders in the Grasslands. I told him I
thought that salamanders inhabited wet lands and under decayed logs, but
he told me that these were his instructions, and he thought it was funny
also.

[nysbirds-l] Dovekie at Timber Point Long Island

2010-01-28 Thread AndyatWH
I thought it might be both amusing and helpful to relate what happened
today on my visit to Timber Point to see the Dovekie. I went to Timber Point
about 3PM to the boat basin to see the bird, but when I got there at the
boat Basin there was no Dovkie to be seen, but I met a birder with binocs
there, who told me he couldn't find it but he did not have a scope to look
back
in the bay and water ways. So I took out my scope and mounted it on the
dock to take a look. First I took my binocs and walked down to the left and
right to see if I could spot any thing. I heard the other birders leave,
and when I came back to the spot I left my Scope it was gone. disappeared
completely!! I could not believe it.. could these birders have taken my Scope?
Birders just don't do things like that!! But they and the Scope was
gone!!
I went to the Park Headquarters building to report my loss and they told
me to call the Police! So I did and they told me they would send over a
trouper to the Boat Basin at once, and to meet them there. So I did, and as I
waited I, who should show but the birders who were there before, and who I
thought might have taken my Scope. Then we looked over side of the Dock,
and down in the water was my Scope!! It had fallen over into the water, but
it was still floating about a foot or so out, but too far for me to reach it
and the tide was down so far I could not reach that far! Fortunately the
cops came and with their help and the other birder we got a pole and I was
able to retrieve it! The birders came back to tell me that the Dovekie was
present at the other Marina..the WEST marina, rather than the main marina
(the East Marina) where my Scope went swimming. Then I went to the West
Marina, and could find nothing, no birders and no Dovekie. Then, discouraged
as
I decided to leave, some more birders showed up and found about six feet
in from the dock was the Dovekie!! He was too close to the Dock for me to
see it from the car. I got lots of close-up pictures, and urge any one who
would like to go and look at the Dovekie, he just paddles around and poses a
few feet from the dock. at the WEST Marina. As far as the Tundra Swans,
the Duck hunters scattered all the Ducks and the geese and they took off
with them. Sorry for the length of my story.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Pike's Beach

2009-07-27 Thread AndyatWH
The town of Southampton has just opened ( is in the process of building )
a new area just to the west of the bay side parking area at Pike's beach.
It consists of a trail to a bird watching platform with benchs, access to
the mud flats, and a new parking lot off Dune Road Holding about a dozen
cars. The town plans to close the parking area off Cove Rd.(,next to the
mayors house), as being a violation of code, and the locals are sending
around a petition asking the town to finish the work there soon, and set up
some
rules so that people will not use this parking lot to park for camping or
swimming at Pikes beach and avoid a parking fee in that lot. The community
of Westhampton Dunes seems to be very helpful to bird watchers.

Pike's Beach and Cupsogue are the best shorebird locations on the
East End by far. Mecox Bay is their only competitor but there are
issues about parking, water level and ease of getting to the flats.
At Pike's Beach, it is possible to walk east or west at any tide
(although a rising tide is the best) and see shore birds and other
water birds, often in large numbers. Cupsogue itself is a little
trickier; it has extensive flats at low tide and. like Mecox,
attracts many terns and lots of shorebirds, but it requires wading
across inlets and mud flats to get to the best areas.

Eileen Schwinn scheduled visits to Pike's Beach for both days this
weekend. Saturday's walk was a program of ELIAS or Eastern Long
Island Audubon and attracted a good 30 participants in warm, sunny
weather. Sunday's walk, organized by (of all places) the Parrish Art
Museum, had a much smaller crowd and had to be squeezed in between
early thunderstorms and late arriving dense fog. Both walks were
marked by good numbers of Short-billed Dowitchers, Semipalmated
Sandpipers, Sanderlings, Willets and Laughing Gulls, plus smaller
numbers of Least Sandpipers and Ruddy Turnstones, all apparently
feeding on horseshoe crab eggs. Although the numbers of horseshoe
crabs coming to this beach to mate and nest has been severely
diminished by a thriving (and partly illegal) market for these
ancient creatures, there are now apparently fair numbers of late
arrivals. Harvesting horseshoe crabs after June 1st is not legal in
New York and both the legal and illegal harvest pretty much comes to
a halt; as a result, the inexorable workings of evolution (even on
such ancient creatures!) seems to be encouraging late nesting!

Besides the above listed birds, there was one Red Knot on Saturday
feeding on the horseshoe crab eggs. Also seen in the area were Little
Blue Heron and a pair of Royal Terns (on Saturday) and a single
Forster's Tern (today). In the category of local breeders, there were
numbers of Piping Plover (both days), a single Am. Oystercatcher (on
Saturday) and Herring, Great Black-backed and Ring-billed Gulls (not
a local breeder) as well as Least and Common Terns.

Now that I have rescued my Peruvian Amazonian boots (useful for marsh
and mud sloshing), I think I need to try the Cupsogue flats!
