Some INTERESTING birding at Hempstead Lake SP this morning. WOOD DUCK in Schodack Pond flying out in 3 groups with consensus from the birders for a total of 80+ and probably more; a SOLITARY SANDPIPER; YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 3 COMMON RAVEN, 2 immature and an adult BALD EAGLE all 3 circling above Trees still leafed out in Summer green. No fall color yet. After a smattering of warblers and a female SUMMER TANGER in my yard (2 miles east of the park) yesterday afternoon, I expected an exciting day today. Nope!. Still struggling to get a wow day. However, the PROTHOTARY WARBLER continues and a CERULIAN WARBLER showed up early this morning along the stream and later moved over to the NW corner of the dog run. Still there when I left at 11:00, sporadically singing loudly. Arriving at Hempstead Lake in late morning seemed to have been the right time, as there was a moderate break from the rain. It was surprisingly birdy around Schodack pond with lots of yellow rumps, good numbers of palm and pine warblers, rublets, gnatcatchers and both waterthrushes, which at one point seemed to be singing to one another. But the highlight was the summer tanager, initially found by Bill Belford on Tuesday, still making the rounds of the southeast section. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake report
The mixed flock of warblers working the dry stream bed at Hempstead Lake since Thursday continued throughout the day, but it definitely seems to be a dynamic and fluid assemblage of birds. Today, Parula, Yellow-rump, Redstart, Palm, and Black-throated Blue were abundant and confiding, and were intermittently joined by Nashville, Black-throated Green, Yellowthroat, and Black-and-white. Ovenbird, Blackpoll, and Magnolia were seen on the fringes or away from the flock. Birders on site this morning twice glimpsed a stout, yellowish warbler with dingy plumage on the head, but we could not confirm its identity as the previously-sighted Mourning before it disappeared from view heading far back the stream bed. Some saw a potential Tennessee candidate, but unfortunately this tricky species was not definitively sighted today either. The flock is moving more or less constantly, and my morning and afternoon visits turned up different numbers and species whenever I connected with them. The Rusty Blackbird continues and was seen by several observers. Raptors put on a show today as well, including battling Cooper's Hawks, a lone Sharp-shin, a soaring Peregrine pair, and a flyby Great Horned Owl. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake - lingering migrants
A thorough sweep of Hempstead Lake this morning turned up several good birds reported for the past week. Previously Cliff and Bank Swallows remain, feeding among their commoner cousins. I tallied 11 warbler species, including a continuing Orange-crowned, Redstart, Nashville, Blue-winged, Parula, Black-throated Green, Black-and-white, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, N. Waterthrush, and Ovenbird. Solitary Sandpiper, Yellow-throated, Blue-headed, and Warbling Vireos, Eastern Kingbird, and Great Crested Flycatcher were also present. Joe Giunta and I birded Hempstead Lake SP. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake tennis tournament, May 7-15
The Empire State Open tennis tournament is to be held at Hempstead Lake State Park May 7-15, during the peak of spring migration. Temporary bleachers and other structures will be installed for an anticipated 60,000 spectators. According to State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey, the tournament will have "minimal environmental impact to the park and any disruptions will be mitigated." This is questionable. The construction, noise, and traffic of the tournament will disrupt crucial habitat for the migrants and, as access to the park during this period may be restricted, may hinder birders' access to observation sites as well. Please write Governor Cuomo to protest this disruption of a necessary staging and nesting area for many sensitive species, and urge him to relocate the tournament: The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo Governor of New York State NYS State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224 In addition, the South Shore Audubon Society is asking birders to photograph the site before and during construction, and during and after the tournament, in order to document any damage to the park. There was a young Peregrine on the ice at Hempstead but little else around. Smith Pond has far less ice coverage, hosting Gadwall, Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, Green-winged Teal, Shoveler, Black Duck, coots, a Pied-billed Grebe, a female Wood Duck, and a pair of Pintail. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake New Arrivals
I heard a few flight calls late last night despite the unfavorable winds, so I decided to check out Hempstead Lake this morning. Notable spring firsts included SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE. We also managed to break into the double digits on warbler diversity, counting 10 species: BLACKBURNIAN, WILSON'S, REDSTART, CANADA, BLACKPOLL, MAGNOLIA, PARULA, BLACK-AND-WHITE, YELLOW, and YELLOW-RUMPED. Others also saw a N. WATERTHRUSH that I failed to relocate. Multiple BALTIMORE ORIOLES were joined by a first-year male ORCHARD. My final total was 55 species, with plenty of quality birds included. Plenty of vireos (Warbling and Red-eyed), swallows, orioles, blackbirds, flycatchers (Great Crested and Kingbird), and gnatcatchers were present. Lots of territorial defense and males chasing each other. Warbler diversity was low: a few Yellows, an unseen CHESTNUT-SIDED who was heard singing only once, and a very active and conspicuous BLACKPOLL WARBLER. As I walked the grassy area between the south lake and the small pond, I was surprised to see a tern gracefully floating south, vaguely along Peninsula Blvd. I was more surprised to see that it was fairly large and stocky, very pale, with a short, streamer-less tail. I realized it was something a bit out of the ordinary and glimpsed a dark bill as the bird veered away: GULL-BILLED TERN. It was quickly lost from sight as it flew over the tree tops, no doubt headed back to the coast. I walked to the road and scanned the usual flock of gulls, finding Herring, Great Black-backed, Ring-billed, and a single LAUGHING GULL. There was a handful of FORSTER'S TERNS flying over the water beyond them, so I took the eastern lake edge trail and got some closer views of them and several Ospreys. Also witnessed a scuffle between some Tree Swallows and a Hairy Woodpecker who attempted to enter their nest hole. I checked out the hidden, vegetation-choked pond as a final stop and found a handsome male WOOD DUCK before heading home. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23386429 -Tim Healy -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP Nassau County- Yellow-throated Warbler
A Yellow-throated Warbler continues at Hempstead Lake State Park. Mid-morning it was seen along the northwestern edge of the open lawn area just north of the pond (Macdonald Pond?), where people run their dogs. Other species of interest were Bank and Rough-winged Swallows, Chimney Swift, Parula and many Pine Warblers, and a silent Warbling Vireo. Reported by others were Black-and-White and Palm Warblers, and White-eyed Vireo. I could not find the Cape May warbler that was reported yesterday in the Jones Beach median. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Hempstead Lake SP 13 Apr We finally had a small wave of warblers this morning consisting of PINE, PALM, YELLOW-RUMPED and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS. Other recent additions were RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. Surprising was the lack of any sparrow movement. While the Tree Swallows came down over South Pond, for he most part, they were foraging way up in the air. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK posed in the woods close to the stream path until driven off by the Blue Jays, then settling not far off. It seems everyone has a camera these days. Before the jays got too rambunctious, there was a great photo-op going. Not to be overlooked, a pair of brilliant male WOOD DUCKS livened the parking lot pond. Hempstead Lake sp 29 March I stopped by before lunch on a sunny but cold day. Still, there must have been a hatch as South Pond was covered with a dozen+ TREE SWALLOWS hawking along with a number of EASTERN PHOEBES along side of them. Altogether, there must have been at least 40-50 if not more PHOEBES in the limited area I covered. They were everywhere, 8 in one spot, 4 in another and pairs all over, in addition to the singles. . PINE WARBLERS have returned. I saw 1 bright spring and a dull and bright pair. The pair were with a bright colored CAROLINA WREN. Nice contrast. 23 March 2015 Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) birded Hempstead Lake SP this cold, sunny morning. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP and Kissena Park, Queens
Hempstead Lake SP. Joe Giunta, Debbie Martin and I (Sy Schiff) joined the South Shore Audubon this morning in Hempstead. The walk produced several dozen species including lingering Wood Duck, Pied-bill Grebe, 8 species of warbler, 4 species of woodpecker, a Blue-headed Vireo, a few sparrows plus other usual common birds. Not necessarily a migration, but a pleasant increase from recent days. Kissena Park. After our tour of Hempstead, we went to Queens and birded the Kissena Community Garden. The garden was lush with late vegetables and bursting with planted flowers. There were lots of working gardeners who didn't seem to bother us or the few sparrows and half dozen Palm Warblers.. We went next door to he corridor where we found a pair of circling Red-tail Hawks, Red-eyed Vireo, another Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 3 species of warbler and 5 species of sparrows. The birding here was a bit disappointing after the early morning at Hempstead, but the overall day was a lovely Fall experience, Sy -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Hempstead Lake SP 14 May A slow birding morning with few migrants. There were singing White-eyed, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, Gray Catbird, Northern Cardinal, Baltimore Oriole, calling Great-crested Flycatcher and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. It seemed more like early Summer than Mid May. NEWS ALERT: The Boy Scouts will arrive this afternoon and stay the weekend for their annual Jamboree. Not going to be a birding weekend. On a better note, refurbishing work within the park, depending on the weather, should be complete by mid week. At that point, all parking fields will be open. Hempstead Lake SP progress report Lots of construction going on. The entrance to the park from Peninsula Blvd is closed. Exit 18 West on the Southern State Pkwy is being rebuilt and you may or may not be able to exit there. The Exit East is OK. Eagle Ave through the park is udder construction and will be repaved starting with completion of the repaving within the park. The paths are mostly complete and Field #2 should be completed today. Just some inner roadways and finishing touches. I entered Eagle Ave through the city streets and drove south to field #1, not being sure if I could get there from the parkway going west.. I live to the east; there was no problem going east from exit 18.. Lovely day although the birding was a bit slow. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake LI Yellow-throated Warbler Observations...
I thought of sharing a few of my observations on the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER that was seen yesterday at Hempstead Lake LI. Initially, I thought this bird had white lores, but was missing the white chin for *albilora* + the bill appeared too big for that race. After obtaining closer views, I was able to detect yellow in the lores, which would indicate *Dendroica dominica dominica??* I hope to look at my photos later today for further analysis. I also heard the bird sing very softly a few times. Hopefully, it stuck around for others to get today. "Blistering Barnacles! [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park Birds (Nassau Co.)
Warm weather and southerly winds finally arrived and with it a nice collection of early spring migrants. Pine and Palm Warblers were in attendance, along with good numbers of Golden-crowned Kinglets. The previous swallow influx over the South Pond seems to have disappeared, with a small number of Tree Swallows still flying high overhead. Rusty Blackbirds were in good numbers, mixed in with the Red-winged Blackbirds along the creek. The pair of Blue-winged Teal were still present on Lily Pond. After birding HLSP for a few hours this morning, we were at home when Andrew Baksh's timely post (courtesy of Sam Janazzo and Joan Quinlan) about a Yellow-throated Warbler in the picnic area west of the parking lot sent us scurrying back to the park. Upon arrival at HLSP, there were a good number of birders watching the warbler, which obligingly flitted about in a small tree ten feet in front of us. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake - Blue-winged Teal, Tree Swallows, Rusty Blackbirds
I birded Hempstead Lake State Park for three hours (10-1) today. Highlights were a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEALS, 6 TREE SWALLOWS (over McDonald Pond), and 5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. Some other early Spring migrants seen included Fox Sparrow (2), Brown Creeper (2), Osprey (1, with trout), and Yellow-rumped Warblers (4). Other notables were Green-winged Teal (3), singing Winter Wrens (3), and a singing Dark-eyed Junco. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park Birds (Nassau Co.)
Despite the chilly weather, there was a nice assortment of early spring migrants and winter resident species at Hempstead Lake State Park (HLSP) this morning. Upon arriving at the HLSP parking lot, I heard a Common Raven calling, and discovered a pair in the roadway east of the parking lot sampling a road kill. They subsequently flew off north through the picnic area. Other birds of note included Wood Duck (2), Eastern Phoebe (1), Tree Swallow (6), and Rusty Blackbird (2). Additional birds observed were Pied-billed Grebe, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Fox Sparrow (singing). I also recorded my first Yellow-rumped Warblers (3) away from the beach. The Red-necked Grebe continues at Captree State Park, and is starting to acquire a tinge of red on the breast. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP & Pelham Bay Park
Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo and I (Sy Schiff) continued our new year (3 Jan) with a birding day that included Pelham Bay Park.. We met in Hempstead Lake SP, joining the South Shore Audubon group. There we found NORTHERN SHOVELER, COMMON MERGANSERS, AMERICAN COOT, PIED-BILLED GREBES, GREAT BLUE HERONS, BELTED KINGFISHER, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, a HERMIT THRUSH and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, >From there we went to Pelham with part of the Audubon contingent. Sitting out >in the open was the BARRED OWL, a lifer for a few of our companions. We then >went over to the Manor. Nothing new; both areas being a bit calm, but we got >our target bird. Returning to our meeting place at Hempstead, Joe and I stopped by Smith Pond. There in the flock of GREEN-WINGED TEAL was the previously found COMMON TEAL (still considered a subspecies on this side of the pond--we await the AOU Record Committee to join the rest of the world. This bird has been split in Europe, so get it while awaiting the eventual split here.) We stopped by HLSP this morning in hopes of seeing a Mourning Warbler (there had been one reported at HLSP on Saturday from the South Pond area) with no luck. However, we did observe a calling Acadian Flycatcher along the stream opposite the restrooms. Eastern Wood Pewees were present in fair numbers and later in the morning there were a number of Willow Flycatchers calling at West End. Lots of birdsong this morning. Although I missed the highlights mentioned yesterday by Ken Feustel, I had one of my own. A Kentucky Warbler was singing at the northern edge of the picnic fields at field 2, just south of the houses, in the wooded area. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park Birds (Nassau Co.)
We spent four hours birding Hempstead Lake State Park this morning, finding nineteen species of warblers. Our best find was a Bay-breasted Warbler and a late Yellow-throated Vireo. We were unable to relocate the Prothonotary Warbler found Thursday morning at the stream outlet to the South Pond. A stop at Connetquot River State Park in early afternoon yielded a good number of butterflies (twelve species), but few birds. Two warbler species were added to the days list, however (Pine and Blue-winged) giving us a total of twenty-one species for the day. Hempstead Lake SP and Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 18 April Birding is slow; awaiting a wind change. However, we are seeing new arrivals. At Hempstead, a Green Heron (found yesterday) was present this morning along with a Black-crowned Night-Heron and continuing Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. At Oceanside, Clapper Rail(s), Greater Yellowlegs, 6 Forster Terns, a pair resting on each of three different buoys off the end of the property, and Savannah Sparrows continue. Today saw the first Willets. I took Bob Adamo over to the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron colony north of Waukena Ave (Gifford and Woodward Ave.). [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP: Chat plus Pine Warblers
Hempstead Lake SP. 30 March Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) spent a pleasant, but still cool morning finding few migratory birds. However, 2 EASTERN PHOEBE were seen along with ten (10) PINE WARBLERS, in groups of 2, 6 and 2. Most were very bright and singing loudly, a number at the same time. A single YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER joined the larger group. The lingering YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT feeding on bittersweet berries by the west side of McDonald Pond offered a scant inadequate sighting before dropping down and disappearing. We waited silently, walked into the path at the SW corner, waited and looked some more. Gradually we detected movement in the dense vegetation, A bird slowly moved about while completely hidden. Frustrating. Then, it flew up into the center of a a small tree 15 ft. away and posed for us.. WOW! The bright yellow under parts were dazzling in the morning sun. Other birds included an OSPREY over McDonald Pond and 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP-BLACK TERN
Hempstead Lake SP 25 August I joined the South Shore Audubon Thursday walk this morning. Land birding was uneventful for the most part. At the north end of South Pond where the open field constricts the expanse of the pond next to McDonald Pond, there was a huge slick of floating debris, sticks and leaves. Around the periphery and occasionally in the center was a flitting bird (reminiscent of a Storm-Petrol). The flight was very un-tern like when first seen. It turned out to be an adult BLACK TERN molting from Summer to Winter plumage. A totally unexpected bird in that location. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park & Oceanside MNSA Birds (Nassau Co.)
It was a disappointing morning of birding at most locales we visited this morning. Robert Moses State Park was very quiet, as was WestEnd/Jones Beach. We stopped at Hempstead Lake State Park in mid-morning but no one we talked to had seen the previously reported Yellow-throated Warbler. We did observe Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, in addition to Barn, Tree and Rough-winged Swallows over the South Pond. At a windy Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area there were Greater (8) and One Lesser Yellowlegs, two Glossy Ibis, a single Laughing Gull, and five Forster's Terns. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park (HLSP) Birds
Cool weather did not seem to inhibit the number of birds at HLSP this morning, although the species observed seemed similar to what was reported from the same location yesterday. Highlights were four species of swallow on South Pond, including an early Cliff Swallow, as well as Tree, Barn, and Rough-winged Swallows. Warblers included good numbers of Pine Warblers, A few Palm Warblers, and a Black & White Warbler. Other species present included Wood Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Eastern Phoebe, Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Rusty Blackbird. Reported Today by Others from HLSP : Black-throated Green Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo. I am not sure if the Orange-crowned Warbler observed at HLSP this past Sunday by Joe Viglietta was present today or was a sighting from yesterday. At West End/ Jones Beach later in the morning, there were three Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Eastern Phoebe, Fox Sparrow, Field Sparrow, and two late Tree Sparrows. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park, Jones Beach and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge...
As Ken Feustel noted in his earlier post of today; birding this morning at Hempstead Lake Park was slow, but as it got warmer the birding picked up albeit the variety was slim. Species of note included both Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creeper and an *Orange-crowned Warbler* all observed by Joan Quinlan, Gurta Fritz, Bobby Kurtz and I. Over at Jones Beach, Joan, Gurta and I found the Pine Warbler, that was seen and reported earlier in the day by Ken and Sue Feustel. Additional birds of note were 2 immature White-crowned Sparrows, a Field Sparrow (seen around the Coast Guard Station) and a plethora of Eastern Phoebes. I stopped counting after 30, but I'm confident that we had well over 50 Phoebes around the areas we covered. My last stop was at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where I noted a few new spring arrivals, Tricolored Heron (1), Little Blue Heron (1) and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (2). All were seen in the marshes across from the West Pond Trail before bench 1. The North and South gardens had both Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Good Spring Birding! Birding was slow at HLSP early this morning, where there were more birders than birds. Other than Golden-crowned Kinglets there were few migrants. However, later in the morning the birding picked up (after we left). At West End there were good numbers of Eastern Phoebe's (approx. 25), a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and our FOS Pine Warbler. Seen by Others at HLSP: Orange-crowned Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet Red-headed Woodpecker Update: The previously reported RHW at Caumsett State Park was not seen last Saturday by birders, but was observed on Sunday by another group of birders in the woods west of Fresh Pond. There was some migrant movement into the park in the last day or so with 4 Wood Ducks, Tree Swallows, single members of both Kinglets, a dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers (not usually found here in winter) and a pair of Eastern Towhees. It's a start. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
