[nysbirds-l] "Snowy Owls" by Jean-François Therrien. Queens County Bird Club - Wed, Feb 17 at 7:30 pm

2021-02-15 Thread Nancy Tognan
The Queens County Bird Club will hold its next meeting via Zoom on Wednesday,
February 17, 2021 at 7:30 pm.

The presentation will be “"Snowy Owls: The Ultimate Nomads" by Jean-Francois
Therrien of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
When there is a winter “invasion” of Snowy Owls, birders go nuts. Why does this
happen—the invasion, that is? As senior research biologist at Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary in Pennsylvania, Canadian-born Jean-François Therrien will review
recent results of the sanctuary’s research program, emphasizing the movement
patterns as well as the reproductive behavior of Snowy Owls. He will
demonstrate the fieldwork and the monitoring techniques that are used for these
highly mobile and unpredictable predatory birds over a period of consecutive
years. Therrien is currently at work on various aspects of raptor conservation
science such as satellite tracking of hawks, falcons, vultures, and
owls—especially the close monitoring of American Kestrel populations.

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls/Rough-legged Hawks/Black-backed Woodpeckers/Gray Jays/Boreal Chickadees, & more

2015-02-13 Thread Joan Collins
2/13/15 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

Happy 15th Anniversary to Northern New York Birds (a day early!). Thanks
Dana!

On this bitter cold day (never made it to zero) with wind, our 18 feeders
saw record activity. Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and Amer. Goldfinches
all continue to visit (the goldfinches are highly unusual for this location
in the heart of winter). I continue to go through a record number of suet
cakes this winter. We also had one Dark-eyed Junco make it into February,
but I haven't seen it in the past few days.

At Sabattis Bog, the pair of Gray Jays, along with large numbers of
Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches, flew in for raisins,
bread, and sunflower seeds. I only lasted a few seconds in the windy, minus
11 temperature. I drove down the road and stopped to listen for a
Black-backed Woodpecker, and found a male right outside the car! I tried to
photograph it outside the car but my hand went completely numb. I was able
to photograph it from inside the car with the window down a bit. I spent an
hour photographing the bird! (Photos on my Facebook page below)

2/12/15 Long Lake

At Sabattis Bog, in addition to the pair of Gray Jays, Boreal Chickadees
hung out in the trees while the Black-capped Chickadees ate sunflower seeds.

2/10 to 2/11/15 Long Lake (Sabattis Bog) and then two days in the Lake
Ontario - St. Lawrence Valley (Jefferson Co.)

I stopped at Sabattis Bog on my drive to the St. Lawrence Valley on Tuesday,
2/10/15. I found two Black-backed Woodpeckers (one at the Bog and one in
another location along Sabattis Circle Road), a Pileated Woodpecker, 2 gray
Jays, and at least 2 Boreal Chickadees.

Between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., I found 12 Snowy Owls in Jefferson Co.! The last
owl found was vocalizing - a very wild sound! (I posted Snowy Owl photos to
my Facebook page below.)

There were many Rough-legged Hawks (both light and dark morphs), Red-tailed
Hawks, 1 Amer. Kestrel, and 3 Bald Eagles (all adults). There were also
many Wild Turkeys, many Snow Buntings, a few Horned Larks, 1 Northern
Shrike, several Northern Cardinals, many Amer. Tree Sparrows, and several
flocks of Common Redpolls eating weed seeds on Point Peninsula. A female
Ring-necked Pheasant was in the middle of a large, snowy field on Point
Peninsula (photos on Facebook).

On 2/11/15 a Snowy Owl flew down to the ground on a snow covered field. It
was crouching, and occasionally looking up. Another Snowy Owl flew in and
they tangled. The flying owl came in vocalizing! The crouching bird looked
huge.

I met a few photographers over the couple days - all well behaved!

I stayed at "The Duck Away Motel" in Chaumont. I love out of the way motels
and this 6 room motel fit the bill! It had a microwave, large refrig,
coffee maker, Wi-Fi, TV, hot water - everything you need! Apparently, most
of their customers in the fall are hunters, and fishermen in the winter.
The lamp next to my bed had a huge glass stand - with a stuffed Northern
Bobwhite inside!!! Above the lamp, was a painting of hunters shooting Amer.
Black Ducks! And the wallpaper border featured many waterfowl species! It
was "interesting"! I would stay there again - it puts you very close to
spectacular birding areas.

On 2/9/15, while driving along Route 30 in Long Lake, a Snowshoe Hare was
sitting in the road. As I tried to slow down, the hare began to run
parallel to my car before running up the snowbank. I looked in my rearview
mirror and the hare went right back into the road! The snow is very deep
now and unconsolidated, so it might be easier to get around in the road.

2/8/15 Long Lake - Three-Brook Loop Ski Trail off the Northville-Placid
Trail

My husband, George Yellott, and I skied the Three-Brook Loop Ski Trail (5
miles) on Sunday. We found two Black-backed Woodpeckers. The one we
watched was a male. It was in the exact same location where I observed
mating (in early May) several years ago!

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls - Cambria, Niagara County

2014-12-03 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
While driving home from doing errands, Betsy and I were surprised to see two
SNOWY OWLS on Cambria-Lockport Townline Road (aka Junction Road and State
Route 93), about one half mile south of Rt 104, on the west side of the
road. We saw just one at first and stopped to check it out but it soon flew
a little further back into the field and landed within seven feet of the
other owl! We heard some calls coming from the owls but neither chased the
other and we left them like that. The first bird, a very white owl, appears
to be an adult male. The other lightly marked bird is either an adult
female or immature male. There have been an inordinate number of adult male
Snowys seen this fall. Seeing as last year's incredible incursion involved
many young males, I wonder if these are the same birds returning as adults.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls in the Netherlands

2014-02-04 Thread leormand .
As has been previously reported through this listserv and a Canadian blog -
some snowy owls made it onto a freighter that left NY and hugged the coast
near Canada before heading to Europe. At least two of these birds are in
the Netherlands and are being regularly photographed - here is a link to a
photographers blog about the birds for those interested:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls

2014-01-19 Thread Erich Glanz
I observed a Snowy Owl today (1PM) at Orient State Park at the location
described by Patrick Haney in his post of Jan 17 copied below.

Snowy Owl - Observed late this afternoon on the north side of the road just
before you reach the ranger station.

The ranger told us two individual birds have been hanging around since before
Christmas but they were out on the beach where it was a long walk to get to
them. This past week one of the two individuals has moved into the marsh and
that is the bird we observed.

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls!

2014-01-06 Thread Joan Collins
I have observed 13 Snowy Owls in the past 3 days, and 21 different
individuals so far this winter. I keep wondering if I will ever again
experience such a remarkable irruption for this species in my lifetime. I
have observed a trend in my sightings - most occurred between 1 and 4:30
p.m. It appears that they mostly roost through the morning hours, but
actively hunt in the afternoons. The few individuals I have found in the
a.m. hours were roosting with closed eyes. I have observed the owls perched
on silos, telephone poles, metal and wooden fence posts, trees, the ground,
and bales of hay.

1/3/14 Clinton Co.

Sean O'Brien and I found two Snowy Owls in the location where Paul Osenbaugh
has posted them in Plattsburgh.

1/4/14 Upper St. Lawrence Valley locations (Canton-Hammond-Clayton-Cape
Vincent to Chaumont; southern St. Lawrence Co. to northern Jefferson Co.)

Some of the species found:

Snow Goose - several on the Oswegatchie River

Amer. Black Duck - ~30 on the Oswegatchie River

Bald Eagle - 2 adult flying together at the Rt 68 and Rt 11 intersection in
Canton

Red-tailed Hawk - 3

Rough-legged Hawk - 5 (photo of one on my Facebook page below)

Snowy Owl - 6 (1 in southern St. Lawrence Co. in Morristown and 5 in
northern Jefferson Co. from Cape Vincent to Chaumont) (Several photos on my
Facebook page below) Four of the six were in groups of 2, with one pair
interacting in the air. One of the Snowy Owls was observed chasing a light
morph Rough-legged Hawk.

Horned Lark - many

Snow Bunting - hundreds on Scotch Bush Road near the Rt 6 intersection in
Morristown

Point Peninsula was spectacular and wild. The wind was so ferocious that I
could hardly stand up. I posted a photo to my Facebook page of the sunset
over Lake Ontario from Pt. Peninsula (in contrast to one I took at the same
location nearly a month ago).

1/5/14 Westport (Essex Co.) and Addison, VT

Mario Davalos, a remarkable artist/photographer from the Dominican Republic,
and I birded the Westport area and then visited Addison, Vt. We found open
water at Westport on Lake Champlain. The sky was filled with gulls. A solo
Common Loon was on the lake in addition to other waterfowl. An upside down
Ring-billed Gull on the ice appeared to be dead, but then began moving its
head. There was a great deal of blood on the ice and it was an awful sight.
There was a young Bald Eagle flying over the water and a Red-tailed Hawk
vocalized several times nearby. I am not sure what attached the gull, but
it was awful to see it suffering.

Here are some of the other sightings:

Red-tailed Hawk - many

Rough-legged Hawk - many (3/4 were light morph)

Snowy Owl - 5 in locations posted to the VT list serve (one photo on my
Facebook page below)

Horned Lark - many

Eastern Bluebird - many!

Snow Bunting - many

We also observed a howling Coyote in the middle of the day.

It was nice to run into Nina Schoch and Audrey Hyson in Vermont! There were
many birders in Addison and I was able to offer scope views of Snowy Owls to
young children (& adolescents) out with their parents to see the owls.

I did call the NYC phone # given this morning in order to register my
sentiments re: Snowy Owls being shot at JFK. The call was routed to Albany
where is was kindly and carefully explained to me that this issue needs to be
addressed by the public in writing, hard copy, snail mail if it is ever going
to reach the agency (DEC) that will most likely address it. The woman said
that one should also request a reply with contact info. so that you can follow
up if you want to.

I asked about e-mailing and the woman said the way the system worked in Albany
it should only be hard copy. They scan them into their system and then send all
letters regarding a particular issue on the the agency that will most likely
address it. She explained if it is not done by hard copy your complaints will
enter a big black hole. For what it's worththis is
the address I was given.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Larry Federman
Audubon New York and NYC Audubon’s Executive Directors “sent a letter to the
Port Authority Executive Director (Pat Foye) and JFK’s General Manager. We have
also alerted Governor Cuomo’s Office (the PA is jointly controlled by NY and
NJ) and the DEC as to our position.”

Our chapter network’s leaders have been alerted as well.

Thx everyone. Let’s keep the pressure on!

Hi,
I just called the number for PA Media Relations Office.
The woman who answered asked me if I was a member of the media. When I said no,
she gave me the info # for the PA, (212-435-7000), but none of the options seem
to pertain to our kind of concern.
The rep I spoke to at Gov. Cuomo's office told me she has been getting lots of
calls and took my zip code along with my complaint.

Thanks Betsy for this information. I think it is horrendous that such a time
sensitive and destructive issue can only be addressed by snail mail in this day
and age. I am doing as you suggest, but still urge all to flood Cuomo's office
with phone calls. (518) 474-8390

2013-12-09 Thread Arie Gilbert

All

I just contacted the number below and was told it is the 'media
relations' dept. They only field calls from Media organizations

The person there however gave me this alternate contact info;

Ian Van Praagh, 212-435-6938

I called and left a message.

Please do so as well, and please pass along to other listserves.

2013-12-09 Thread Jennifer Clark
I just called and the woman who took my comment said that if the
governor would take a stand on the issue, it would be reported on the
front page of his website:http://www.governor.ny.gov/
I also see his Twitter feed appears there. Perhaps it's worthwhile to
also tweet him our concerns (and with higher public visibility): @NYGovCuomo

i called the number and if you wait for option 3 (speak to an
assistant) you can leave a polite message with a real live person, as
i did. whether of course that has any impact is to be seen.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Linda Orkin
Thanks so much Alicia, I just called Barbara Lifton's office. The woman I
spoke with had just read an article this morning (Ithaca Journal?) about
these owls and their arrival so was at least informed as to the underlying
information. She is going to check out who to contact and get back to me.

I did emphasize that we were looking for humane solutions to this "problem"
and that other airports seemed to do just fine with trap and release. I
also said a Snowy that is trapped and released will not be looking to
return to that airport but would be happen in many wide open farm fields
and refuges.

I will let everyone know what I learn. I feel this can't wait.

Yes, I called too and chose option 3, to speak with an assistant. She asked
me if there was a bill number, I said no, I'm calling to register extreme
displeasure. She took my zip code. I will try some other methods also
suggested to me.

Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Seth Ausubel
I believe that any communication is helpful, despite what the person at the
contact phone number said. Two suggestions:

(1) You can contact the Port Authority directly by sending a message from their
web site at: http://www.panynj.gov/contact/contact-us.htm
(2) Contact the NYSDEC Region 2 Natural Resources Supervisor at
r2nat...@gw.dec.state.ny.us and ask them to engage with the Port Authority to
stop the practice of shooting the owls.

Begin forwarded message:

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Linda Orkin
Thanks Betsy for this information. I think it is horrendous that such a
time sensitive and destructive issue can only be addressed by snail mail in
this day and age. I am doing as you suggest, but still urge all to flood
Cuomo's office with phone calls. (518) 474-8390

If it is not possible to arrange a catch-and-release program at JFK, would it
be possible to have the airport authorities at least provide the remains of the
owls to qualified individuals who are studying the species so that some

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls at Breezy Point Tip

2012-02-04 Thread Archer Midland
Based on a recent eBird listing, my friend Devin and I rolled the dice and
went out to Breezy Point for what we assumed was a slim chance at finding
an Snowy Owl. To our surprise and delight we saw not one owl but two.

The first was a bit smaller and slightly mottled with black. It was sitting
on some old chunks of wood on the third dune back from the beach, off to
the right of the diagonal path that cuts from the main sand road to the
shore.

The second owl was further to the west, once again on the third dune back
from the beach. This owl was larger and was completely white. There's a
good chance this was the owl that was hanging out at Jones beach
previously. This owl was sitting in a particularly picturesque spot with
the wonder-wheel and the parachute jump in the background.

Both birds were easily viewable from the dune closest to the shore. It was
made sure that all onlookers kept distance so as to not persuade these owls
to shove off again. Nevertheless the second owl seemed a little bit nervous
and walked around a bit, making a slight hop at one point.

Cheers,

Archer M.
