[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird (briefly) at Riverbank State Park

2022-11-08 Thread Dmitriy Aronov
Shortly before sunset today, Augie Kramer and Vicens Vila-Coury found a
Yellow-headed Blackbird in Riverbank State Park in Manhattan. The bird
was feeding with a flock of Brown-Headed Cowbirds on a narrow strip of
grass by the highway. The flock did not stick around for long, and our
attempts to find it after it took off were unsuccessful.

If accepted, this will be the first eBird record of the species in New
York County. I am told that one prior county record is mentioned in
Urban Ornithology by Buckley.

Good luck to all with the ongoing rarity season!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird Caledonia, Livingston County Saturday

2022-02-07 Thread Wasilco, Mike R (DEC)
I was surprised by an apparent yellow-headed blackbird in a flock of cowbirds
in my neighbors tree on Saturday morning. Unfortunately I only viewed the bird
for a few moments and the entire flock disappeared when I ducked into the
vehicle to grab my camera. I have no idea if this flock is hanging around
locally or if they were passing through, as I have only been seeing an
occasional cowbird at my feeders with the exception of this flock on Saturday
morning. If I had to venture a guess on the blackbird, I would say it was
either a female or first year male, but I did not see the bird from the side or
in flight to note if it had white in the wing.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird at Nickerson Beach

2021-10-04 Thread Jennifer Wilson-Pines
I've had the good luck to spot the Yellow-headed blackbird twice and both
times it was associating with cowbirds, first time with a few female CB's,
second time with a small mixed group of CB's and red-wings, also mostly
female. Both times in the west Tern colony at Nickerson near the edge of
the pond.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, East Hampton

2020-02-02 Thread Anthony Collerton
Female / Imm type with 3,000 assorted ‘ickies’ (mostly Red-winged Blackbirds
and Brown-headed Cowbirds) on Stephen Hand’s Path. Picked up and lost the bird
quickly as the flock flushed but they are still here just further back from the
road. Just North of the Sag Turnpike but on posted private property currently.
This flock regularly uses the adjacent corn field though so shouldn’t go far.

I saw this bird yesterday around 2:20 or so. I got distant but decent scope
views of it facing me (no side views) and terrible phone-scoped photos which i
will not upload to eBird though i will share them with the reviewers tomorrow.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed blackbird

2019-12-12 Thread Richard Gostic
The Yellow- headed Blackbird continues along the western edge of Lewin's Farm
in Calverton. I got a momentary look as the bird popped up in my scope view as
I was scanning the flock and I could not relocate the bird after this brief
encounter.
The bird is mingling with a mixed flock of blackbirds numbering well over 2000
individuals. The flock was quite skittish this morning regularly moving from
the trees to the ground, and when on the ground continually lifting and
resettling making any kind of systematic scan impossible.
I viewed the bird along the northwest border of the field on Sound Ave.

Hi Rob! Eric Miller and I just had the bird in the tree to east of the entrance
gate of the petting. He was very cooperative and easy to find. I spotted him
within 30 seconds of walking up to the entrance. He flew from the tree to the
ring to the ground where he began to feed. What a gorgeous man!

Thanks everyone! A lifer for me and Eric's best look at a YHBB in New York.

First, I did not go look for it today, but have noticed RFI and bits of news in

in roughly the same spot. That "spot" is a fenced off, seasonal petting zoo (no
barnyard animals there yet) in the northwest corner of Floyd Bennett Field a
stone's throw from the artificial turf soccer fields next to the Aviator Sports
complex. For the latitude / longitude types out there:

40?35'32.21"N
73?53'58.60"W

Despite the bird's brilliantly plumed head, it does manage to disappear
occasionally, mostly just perching in the scattering of trees at that location
for long stretches.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird - Staten Island YES

2017-03-06 Thread Jose Ramirez-Garofalo
I currently have a female Yellow-headed Blackbird in Oakwood Beach, Staten
Island.

It is feeding with a flock of Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed
Cowbirds. They are moving between a cleared housing plot (Hurricane Sandy
Recover area) and the marsh bordering the neighborhood.

Given its proximity to Great Kills Park, this could be the same bird that
was found by Dr. Veit last week.

Here is the approximate location:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed blackbird on Staten Island

2017-03-03 Thread Douglas Futuyma

RE:[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2013-09-17 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Edith Wilson just sent me a photo of the Yellow-headed Blackbird that was
present at the Fire Island hawkwatch yesterday, and she has kindly allowed me
to post it on my picasa site. Comparing it to the bird I found later in the
morning at Captree SP, they are basically similar. Both appear to be immature
females, consistent with Bob Kurtz's field impression of the Fire Island bird
and mine of the Captree bird (which was furthermore very small for a YH
Blackbird, being comparable in size to a male Brown-headed Cowbird). I suspect,
however, that they are different individuals, based on the Captree bird's
seemingly less extensive white belly streaking, bolder yellow supercilium, and
bolder white eye arcs.

Given that photos can be misleading, I'd be curious to know whether others
agree with my assessment that there were two birds.

 barrier beach birding.

My first and last stop was at Jones Beach where I birded with Tom Burke and
Gail Benson for most of the morning into the afternoon. The highlights were:

Adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, seen in the median just after the entrance to
the Coast Guard Station before it disappeared and was never re-found again as
 far as I know.

DICKCISSEL, skillfully picked out in flight by Tom Burke during the early
morning hours when the morning flight was cooking (the bird never put down
although at one point it appeared it might do so).

COMMON NIGHTHAWK, found by Dave Klauber as he almost stepped on it resting on
 the ground in the median.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, found by Tom Burke and Gail Benson, it hung around near
the 1st exit from the West End II parking lot providing a few of us with very
nice looks but then disappeared and was not seen again well into the
 afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA VIREO, one possibly two as Tom Burke and Gail Benson found one
near the same area as the Clay Colored and then Sam Janazzo, with Dave
Klauber might have had another or the same bird in the median across from
where Tom and Gail had theirs.

As far as warbler activity, one could easily be fooled if you drove the
circle and listened and looked for birds. You had to get out and do a little
ground and pound to get the birds but they were there feeding quietly in
the median although NOT in any significant numbers.

The warbler list includes but not limited to (since others may have seen
 additional species), the following.

 Black-throated Green
 Black-throated Blue
 Magnolia
 Northern Parula
 Ovenbird (seen by others)
 Black and White
 American Redstart
 Common yellowthroat
 Prairie
 Cape May
 Prairie
 Palm (both eastern and western)
 Pine
 Yellow
Northern Waterthrush (picked out in flight by Tom Burke by its chip note)

The presence of Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Least Flycatcher, Eastern
Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, Swainson's Thrush among the other regular birds
added to the overall bird activity in the area.

Sparrow activity was almost non existent save for the CLAY-COLORED, Song and
a few Savannah's, the latter found later in the afternoon.

As far as flight movement, there was a steady stream of Tree Swallows all
morning with small numbers of Barn Swallows interspersed in the mix. There
were small numbers of song birds in the mix as well but they mostly appeared
to keep on moving and did not put down.

No apparent movement of hawks detected and no shorebirds on the bar to study
in the midst of all the boat activities near the Coast Guard Station.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird/ Calverton - Yes !

2013-02-05 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

On Monday, I tried 2 X for the blackbird, missing on both the AM and the PM
attempts. The flock was very active along Rt.25, from Edwards Ave to points
west. It came back to feed in the fields behind the Windy Acres Farm Stand at
least 4 X , while I was there. The farthest west I saw the flock was in trees
on the n/s/o Rt. 25, just before the Rt. 25A split.
On Tuesday, I invested ~ 5 hours before finding the bird (1 of 3 reported) at ~
3 PM, at a location, from which it had been reported previously. Upon first
finding the flock (~ 11:15 AM) in a field on the n/s of Rt. 25, e/o Edwards
Ave, and right past the Calverton Deli, all it's activity was to the east of
this location. The flock spent it's time equally between feeding on the ground
and hanging out in the trees. It ranged as far east as Tuomhy Ave, with the
bird (a female, or imm. male) in the trees on the s/s of Rt. 25, just before
the road which takes you to the Spish Splash Water Park (there is a traffic
light at this intersection).
This bird was a tough one to get, almost 180 degree turn-around from my 1st NYS
Yellow-headed Blackbird, a female at a Centereach, L.I. feeder, on 2/25/78. Gil
Raynor, on a "telephone tip" from Tom Davis, had set up a Saturday AM
appointment with the owner, a wonderful lady who had a real active feeder
complex. She was at the door when we arrived, marched us through her fairly
small home, and in less than 5 minutes, was looking at the bird through her
kitchen window. I evidently did not write her name down, but I do remember
hearing that due to her meeting the many birders who came to see the blackbird,
she went on to become a member of NAS, possibly Great South Bay Audubon.
A few minutes in a heated house and then "pay day" - as opposed to ~ 5 hours
(probably 4+ out of the car) cold, some light snow, not much sun and a mass of
thousands of birds which didn't stay motionless very long...but who's
complaining ?

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird in Calverton YES 2-3-13

2013-02-03 Thread Arie Gilbert

I went out to Calverton today to try locating the reported Blackbirds.

The birds were not at the spot reported in an earlier post, so I drove
around, heading up Manor road. i found some other birders studying the
flock in the corn stubble but we could not pick out our target due to
constant motion of the flock and the poor lighting conditions.

The flock then took off northeast, and moved around quite a bit, making
finding a vantage point challenging.

the flock eventually returned to roughly the same location as this am's
report, where I was finally able to pick one female / imm type.

for those interested in locating this bird, this map will give the area
described above as the area within which the flock moved.

http://goo.gl/maps/MPQPs

look in trees for the birds as well as fields, that may be an easier way
to locate the flock.

if the sun is behind you [ ie looking north ] it should make finding one
easier.

good luck!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, Hog Hole, Tompkins County

2012-03-10 Thread Christopher Wood
Greetings,

There was a fairly impressive flight of blackbirds, cowbirds, and grackles
this evening at Hog Hole (Ithaca, NY). Most flocks were about 300 - 500
birds. The biggest surprise was a single adult male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
in a flock about 400 birds that was comprised of 80% Red-winged Blackbirds
and 18% Common Grackles and a few cowbirds. I first spotted the bold white
patches on the upperwing (primary coverts) and then quickly realized that
entire head was yellow except for a small amount of black around the eye.
The bird appeared intermediate in size and shape between the male
Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles. We didn't hear it call. Jessie
quickly got on the bird and had good scope views as it headed to the West.
I think it will be challenging to refind this bird, but it may be worth
checking flocks of blackbirds in the area a bit more closely than usual.

2011-10-20 Thread Andrew Baksh
Joan Quinlan, just called to report that the Yellow-headed Blackbird
continues at Captree State Park. It is moving around with the flock of
Brown-headed Cowbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, Boat-tailed Grackles, and
European Starlings as described by Shai Mitra in his post from yesterday.
Please see previous posts for possible locations on where to look.

Good luck if you go.

2011-10-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
First seen briefly around 4:35 p.m. from the parking lot near the
fisherman's drive. It popped up in one of the tress near the parking lot
where Starlings, Cowbirds and a few Red-winged Blackbirds had gathered but
then dropped out of sight.

Later, seen through 5:15 p.m. with very good views thanks to Michael
McBrien's mom Barbara, who spotted the bird near the Captree Toll Booth.
Shai Mitra and Patricia Lindsay also saw the bird with us.

Interestingly, the bird was feeding on the ground by itself, so this is
something to keep in mind for those who might try for it tomorrow. I'll
have some photos of the disheveled but quite identifiable Yellow-headed
Blackbird later on the blog.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2011-10-19 Thread Robert Bate
I received a call from Rich Fried to say that the Yellow-headed Blackbird
continues at Captree State Park as of 3 PM. It is mixed in with Starlings,
Cowbirds and Red-wings in and around the circle drive just inside the park
entrance and also frequenting the narrow road leading to the boat launch
parking lot and the trees between those two areas.

2011-10-19 Thread Shaibal Mitra
I left the immature male Yellow-headed Blackbird under Ken Feustel's capable
guardianship, and it was still present when I returned 45 minutes later with
Patricia Lindsay. As mentioned by Andrew, it associates with a big flock of
Brown-headed Cowbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, Boat-tailed Grackles, and
European Starlings, portions of which rove around the park on a fairly rapid
cycle. If the flock appears to be broken up into sub-flocks, focus your
attention on the portions containing cowbirds.

This bird closely resembles the one I saw briefly at nearby Robert Moses SP on
5 October and could conceivably be the same individual. I've posted some photos
in the "Long Island Fall 2011" album at:

Shai Mitra, just called to report finding a Yellow-headed Blackbird at Captree
State Park. The bird was observed near the area where the Common Ground Dove
was found last year, but seems to be roving quite a bit. If you go out there to
try for the bird, please post negative or positive reports. Also, please give
the bird room so as not to push it away. I am sure Shai will have more details
on the bird later.

Good Birding!

Carl Starace called and asked me to post a first winter male Yellow-headed
Blackbird he had this morning at the north end of the picnic area at Smith
Point Park on Fire Island. The bird flew off from the picnic area towards

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird- offshore Suffolk Co.

2011-06-08 Thread Tom Johnson
NYbirders,
I wanted to pass along that Chris Vogel and Michael Force had a
Yellow-headed Blackbird come aboard the NOAA ship Bigelow about 70
miles south of Montauk on June 6th. The bird stayed at least until
June 7th.
Cheers,
Tom
