Indeed, I mean something much simpler. Just a page that lists questions
like:

"Can I still use Apache OpenOffice for free in any environment (school,
home, office)? Yes you can."
"Can I still copy Apache OpenOffice and install it on my
daughter's/parents'/colleagues' PCs? Yes you can."
"Can I still distribute a copy of Apache OpenOffice? Yes you can and you
are even freer. Read more [link]."

It should be a "FAQ for the average Joe", absolutely no legalese involved,
unless a distributer wants more info about brands, names and so on.

Maybe here we can just replace Sun/Oracle using Apache? Rob or other

Hi All,

I found this http://www.openoffice.org.au/ is it part of the Apache World
.. or should it be? I can't see how recent it is, but it should probably be
brought into line with the current world?

It would not hurt making the logo in vector. I know that Rob wanted the

I think a review to the whole page is desirable for
the new release. Any committer can change it using
the Apache CMS bookmarklet or SVN. The big question
is what to write in there.

[Propose RC Build Blocker]Bug 119162 - two copies of ooobasis packages after upgrade from oo3.3 to 3.4 on Suse 11 SP1 and soffice will crash after open a file

2012-04-05 Thread xia zhao
Hi all,

I propose 119162 as release blocker. On Suse 11 SP1, after upgrade from OO0
3.3 to AOO 3.4, crash occurs. On Ubuntu 10.04, after upgrader, couldn't
launch AOO. It means we have big upgrade problem on Linux platform. So
should be taken as release blocker.

It looks like the globe with wings was from a PNG. Whether or not
there is a vector source for that is unknown. If we decide to stick

Do we want the same logo on the podling site as well?

I opened up the Photoshop file. This is a bitmap logo. It is anti-aliased from
vectors at a particular resolution. When you scale a graphic like that you get
interesting effects that can include lower resolution.

Do you have a vector version?

I think I managed to translate your test page

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/TestCases/

By the way, if I create a new page I see a huge banner pointing to
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Help:Translating which is
probably outdated now.

But before to continue, i see two points to treat: what

In this case, since it's all new stuff, I think we can safely assume

I thought that there was a request for a 200x100px png so did create one
from this, is there is a need.

Can't work with the psd file directly here but from what I could work
with..took a little detour through GIMP to drop out all white, as the
images I could work with had a little halo around the different elements
- which end up as bitmaps here..anyway did that, then scaled it's a bit
cleaner I think then again maybe not, set the correct canvas size and
added back a white background.

So wasn't sure - included Kay on this email and attaching the 200x100
png - if it isn't needed currently just disregard..OK

Late yesterday I discovered that I had uploaded an obsolete set of files, at
least one of which was unedited for AOO. I replaced them with the latest
iteration. Apologies to anyone who may have taken copies of the wrong files and
wondered if I'd lost the plot. ;-)

Why not to propose an official presentation of the project in different
languages, that people could publish for instance in the newsletter of
their Company, golf club, school, association or other (with a link to the
official web version). Of course such an article would not appear as a
marketting message but a pure information describing to people in an
accessible language to all, the philsophy of the Apache foundation, what is
the AOO project, what it can bring them in their daily activities. I think
that could be an interesting way to take the control of the communication
around the project and spread the word to the basis of the users. Moreover,
these publishing areas are free of charge, and their redactors are often
happy to find articles to publish.
Only an idea.

Thanks for your contribution. This size should be indeed big enough for
any further icon/logo modifications.

I really like this clean and lean graphic. Very similar to the past logo
(this is what the users knows) but with the needed additions that Apache
is requesting.

Thanks

Hmm.. I think so but I don't use graphite fonts.

If it does then maybe a define to "enable unicode support" for your

Ahh... that's the issue. The BSDs don't use glibc (and never will).

I will have to look at the STL issues later on. I actually wanted to update
STLport but I may just try fix things enough to disable it. It's a huge
can of worms only second to ICU ;).

It's not an urgent matter though, Maho's patch seems to do it's

I'd put it into GSL, because GSL ("graphics system layer")

Thanks! It is not clear to the new guys (like me) so
some polishing from our bugzilla experts is welcome.

Well the problem was that there is a big asymmetry in bugzilla: creating
a new category was easy, removing it once issues have been filed against
it is a lot of work.

This is even more so with version numbers. The ability to deprecate old
version will that will be possible once our bugzilla is upgraded will
help a bit to relieve the asymmetrie.

If we started all anew then having categories for just each app and for
framework, localizations, platform support, SDK and external-deps should
have sufficed.

(A) You should be able to add these files to the svn using your client program.

or

(B) Personally I work from the command line with a checked out copy of the web
trunk. In that mode -
- copy the files to the directory.
- svn add the files.
- svn commit the changes.

Would you like help with either of these?

Are you editing directly from the page on the website? If so, I can see the
trouble, and more coming. This may not be a viable way to edit. Let me explain.

The html source in the ooo-site repository is html from the legacy project. It
is content without the Apache project's banner and navigation. To properly edit
the site you must either:

(1) Use the Apache CMS Bookmarklet.

or

(2) Checkout a local copy of the ooo-site svn and work locally.

Sorry if this is different from your preferred method. I will think about how
we can accommodate use of editors like BlueGriffon with the Apache CMS.

Re: [WWW] new logo in staging only...I think we need a graphic modification

2012-04-05 Thread Guillaume
Hi all,

I don't know if it will be usefull or not for somebody,
but I can propose two files :

http://gf3.myriapyle.net/info/Aoo-branding-WWW.xcf (layered file)
http://gf3.myriapyle.net/info/Aoo-branding-WWW.png

The white area is 400x200. (The target size was 200x100, maybe keeping a high
resolution only resized by the CSS can handle the fuzziness problem).
I've just kept what have been voted, but lowered the word "OpenOffice" as
required in one of the previous mails.

I don't know if it help somebeody as a basis but I tried.

Best regards

You are warned that it's really ugly. The bug is
in VCL or in STLport but we workaround it in

Thanks! It is not clear to the new guys (like me) so
some polishing from our bugzilla experts is welcome.

I will open a new issue and I will upload the build log.

Howdy Michael and all,

Yes, in the confluence system you just add an svg file as an attachment,
the markeup will not display it in line, but you can reference on a wiki
page as url link no problem.

Same for the mediawiki, though mediawiki will try to display SVG
directly. (try because not all SVG files are created equal :-/ )

Mixing these two template libraries is not a good idea, e.g. when using

configure -with-system-graphite, but only with --enable-graphite. Then
AOO will build graphite with the same STL template library it is using

I'd put it into GSL, because GSL ("graphics system layer") libraries are

You could send these to me directly, or add to a Bugzilla issue as an
attachment. You might be able to attach the source to a wiki page, but I
am not sure of that.

Hi,

I am currently looking at the logo in the website, definitively looks low
res I will have to go to the original file and bump the resolution by a
factor of 2X to see if that helps.

Please let me know where I should drop the new higher resolution logo. I'll
be working on it tonight.

Wonderful! If Michael has the .psd or .ai vector original file, and we can all
access it later, that will help us resize it without the fuzziness - and make
further changes.

I found the .psd and .ai feather file under
apache.org/images http://www.apache.org/images/ if that will be helpful later
in any redesign.  Is there a /image

It would be nice to add a dimension to the .jpg/.gif/.non-vector image file
name instead of 'small' 'wide' - I would suggest a width - something like
nameOfImage100px.jpg.

I am new - but noticed openoffice.org/images file and a cujrent folder for
logos - good organization!

[WWW] help with new logo editing...

2012-04-05 Thread Kay Schenk
There has been some further discussion concerning the new logo posted as:

http://markmail.org/message/lokfrxotna5ayw6s

We could really use some help with cleaning up the new logo with respect to
kerning, etc.

At this point, given that the logo in use has already been approved by the
community, my feeling is that only size and kerning changes should be made.
Other modifications are discussion for another point in time, I think.

Some basic specs for the web page header (this may not be applicable to
general logao use) would be as follows:

* size 200px x 100px
* because the logo with align middle with text following, the bottm of the
"orb" should be lower than what it is now in the image to align the text in
the image "OpenOffice" with the text next to it.
* make text larger if possible

Kevin Grignon has volunteered to help.

Anyone else is of course welcome to contribute.

Hello all members,

It's Michael Acevedo, I am away from the computer that holds the files
right now but I do have the original files if you need them. Where should I
send them?

Otherwise, I am deeply honored by having Apache selecting the my logo for
OpenOffice.

Please let me know.

Maho-san has a workaround in the BSD port that is not acceptable for
the codebase so I would like to register it in BZ. Fixes for the build
issue

are welcome but I am rather interested in having this type of bugs easier
to report in BZ.

Unfortunately, despite the BZ cleanup, it is still not clear to me on which
category this should be filed in! It is not installation error, nor ucb
or sdk

or wp (that category probably doesn't belong in our bz anymore), how
should it be classified, a new category perhaps?

cheers,

Pedro.

Ciao Gianluca;

Hello *,

is there a page like "LGPL vs Apache 2.0" FAQ for Apache OpenOffice,

Something like "Before you could do that, now you can do the same
thing (or not)".

It would be very useful, IMO, to avoid misunderstandings.

Regards,

A while ago I added this to the Release Notes:

 License Change

The License has changed from LGPLv3 to the compatible Apache License 2
to comply with Apache Software Foundation guidelines. The Apache License
will make adoption and general distribution of the software much easier
since it doesn't require making available the source code. Of course the
software continues being free and the source code with its updates will
continue being available through the Apache Software Foundation servers.

We will obviously not be enforcing the GPL on previous releases, so
maybe we should probably add something in this page:
http://www.openoffice.org/license.html

in that sense.

Pedro.

There are -en Writing Aids extensions that tend to bundle the variants in the

Is this not happening with the AOO Writing Aids?

The Italian users, who have answered to my question, prefer the light
solution (Italian + English only).

So you can keep things how they are now.

Anyway, it would be interesting to me to know why the "en" dictionary has
not a nation suffix even though it seems being an American English

Questions about AOO 3.4 performance testing

2012-04-05 Thread xia zhao
Hi all,

I saw the performance profiling code APPR in svn but not sure if this tool
is enabled when we do full build. Juergen or anyone else who knows it, can
update me about it? I want to confirm if performance testing is enabled
when we do build.

I am doing manual performance testing for AOO 3.4
r1303653,
comparing with OOo 3.3 to see if some regression issues exist. Though
the
data may not be so stable comparing with automtic testing result, it still
can give us some image about where we are for AOO 3.4 performance.

OOB incubator report re patch release

2012-04-05 Thread Joe Schaefer
Often times you will see TLP's issue
an Out-Of-Band report for notifying the
board of any exceptional events in the project.

I'd like to suggest that we do something
similar here regarding the "patch release"
we issued recently which was a rather exceptional
circumstance in many respects.  The report
need not be comprehensive, just a brief heads
up telling people about the particulars would
be appreciated.

I agree, that's why I ask how long the vote will continue. Once RC build is

What kind of testing are you looking for?

Right now, the main entry point for user downloads are one of these pages:

http://www.openoffice.org/

http://www.openoffice.org/download/other.html

http://www.openoffice.org/download/ (redirected from
http://download.openoffice.org)

We (the AOO PMC) control the contents of these pages. We don't need to
involve Infra to make modifications there.

The pages currently route the download requests to the MirrorBrain network.

If I understand the 3.4 mirror plan correctly, we would have two download
links, probably at the topmost level, which would be www.openoffice.org and
maybe download.openoffice.org.

If you want to prototype something to test this with the legacy 3.3
downloads, that sounds OK with me. However, I'm not very familiar with the
logic in that page, and how it determines what file to download based on
platform and locale.

Is there someone on the AOO project who understands this logic, and how we
can modify these pages to offer a link to SF for downloads?

Our Site Operations director, Jacob Moorman, has already sent a

Yes. If we can test with the 3.3 legacy downloads that will give us some
greater confidence that it will also work with the 3.4 downloads.

Building Guide AOO

2012-04-05 Thread Andre Fischer

Hi all,

I have started a rewrite of the building guide. My goals where

- make it more understandable for people new to Apache OpenOffice

- remove out-of-date and legacy information, update the rest

- avoid repetition of general concepts (eg autoconf;configure;build) on
platform specific pages

- flatten the page hierarchy.

You can judge yourself if I was successful:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

At the moment there are no links from other pages to the new guide so
that we/I can make changes without confusing too many people.

Feel free to make changes to improve the guide.

Or point out the things that you don't understand or miss or that are wrong.

Best regards,
Andre

+1. When I voted in favor of that logo I assumed that was just an example
rendering and that we had the SVG source for it, so we could scale it to
other sizes. If we do not have these sources, then I don't think the logo
will work.

OK. I would recommend that we do not delay the vote for the regression
test results. Instead, we should have the voting period be long enough
that the regression tests will be done before the vote closes. That way
IPMC members can do their release verification in parallel with Lily's
final testing.

Cool, I just saw the movie "Quantum Apocalypse" last night. Not a black
hole colliding with the Earth, but a "cloud of quarks" with similar
effect. The movie was almost as poorly researched as that article you
link to.

First, the phrase "components that were either replaced or removed" is a
rhetorical device that probably has a fancy Greek name, but it is mixing
things with user impact with things that have no user impact. You see this
device used by some advocacy groups to increase the impact of their
statements, like "Last year government statistics report that over
5,000,000 children were either murdered or had chickenpox".

Second, the author does not seem to understand the distinction between
category-b and category-x licenses and how they are treated at Apache. For
example, Hunspell is category-b, so it is included in our binary packages.
It is not lost, as the author claims.

Third, several of the replacements we made are actually beneficial to the
user, giving better functionality or security. For example, our solver
replacement (CoinMP) has been rated higher by researchers than the GPL
component that we are replacing.

As for who has the wind in their sails, etc. We're more of a battleship
than a sailboat. We're slow to turn, but once we get steaming we make our
own wind.

Finally, I think this project is very happy to talk to reporters who might
have questions when preparing an article. It is not an imposition. It is
part of what Apache PMC's do. It is an easy way to avoid sloppy errors.

Re: LGPL vs Apache 2.0 FAQ?

2012-04-05 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi Gianluca,

I am not a lawyer but I think the following page is informative for
people to understand how the Apache Foundation handles third-party licenses:

http://www.apache.org/legal/3party.html

And the Legal page is worth to be read as well:
http://www.apache.org/legal/

If you want to compare the licenses then it's always helpful to take a
look at the Open Source Initiative homepage at http://www.opensource.org.

I'm not sure if an average user is able to read legal language thus in
my opinion such a legal comparison might not be useful at all because it
probably needs to be written in legal language.

Hello *,

is there a page like "LGPL vs Apache 2.0" FAQ for Apache OpenOffice, in
order to show explicitly to users and distributors what differences
there are btw those licenses?

Something like "Before you could do that, now you can do the same thing
(or not)".

Kind regards, Joost

Sorry Serg, but i can't see your viewpoint.

The list of language codes are in Templates pages. You can organize as
you wish. How we can't support/community for all languages, i cutted
many links, preserving only the main languages.

Try to edit this template[1] to see the code, that you will understand

ok, I was able to create a new kid/localize.sdf and will prepare a

We can include this "pseudo-locale" in the future when we have ensured

no that is false and a misleading information, I will change it.

At the beginning we had problems with the migration of installed
extensions. But this is fixed now and former installed extensions should
be migrated.

And extension developed for earlier OpenOffice versions should still
work. But it can always happen that other changes will make problems.
Extensions in C++ can make more problems but often a simple rebuild
should solve such problems

Today I would always suggest to use a max version dependency and would
check my extension for the next version. This way it is possible to
ensure an always working extension.

ParagraphData is not used in dlgedfunc.cxx (in reportdesigner), it is

ParagraphData is not used outside editengine module, thus it is okay not

LGPL vs Apache 2.0 FAQ?

2012-04-05 Thread Gianluca Turconi

Hello *,

is there a page like "LGPL vs Apache 2.0" FAQ for Apache OpenOffice, in
order to show explicitly to users and distributors what differences there
are btw those licenses?

Something like "Before you could do that, now you can do the same thing
(or not)".

It would be very useful, IMO, to avoid misunderstandings.

We made some changes and we should at least give people the chance to

In the meantime I should have enough time to sign the artifacts.

Hi,

a lot of clean up work and also bugfixes were made on the way to our first

The RAT output includes now only 2 files where one includes an ALv2 header.
The other file is a left over and will be changed. A mistake!

The NOTICE, LICENSE are updated which was a lot of work.

I would like to propose a new build based on revision r1309668.

Included languagues: en-US ar de cs fr es gl it ja zh-CN pt-BR nl hu ru
zh-TW fi

The languages that we had on Pootle and where most of them were already
built for the developer snapshots.

We should take a closer look on these builds and when we are satisfied with
the quality I would like to vote on this build to be used as our first RC.

Re: [WWW] new logo in staging only...I think we need a graphic modification

2012-04-05 Thread Guillaume Fernandez (Club)
Hi everyone,

I think that kevin's changes are very important.

1) The looks is indeed more profesionnal. The capitalization has enhanced the
natural readability of the logo.
The kerning is better while somewhat a little dense (intermediate position would
be great).

2) The look of the main webpage is crucial : we absolutly have to get a
professional look and in my opinion this is not the case today. because of the
JPEG quality and resolution (blurred image). We should improve the quality of
the JPEG (or use a non-destructive PNG).

Beyond getting the right size, I'd like to propose a few other small tweak to

concept, rather, they merely some polish to the concept as we move towards
production consumption.

I like the change of "Apache" to gray but am not so sure about its
capitalization. I understand the reason (after you pointed it out to us
non-artists :) though.
The kerning looks more homogeneous but somewhat dense. For example the i and c
in Office seem to almost touch.

I'll need to access the source files.

OK, maybe I was a bit confusing, and I hope this elaboration helps.
What I think would be ideal is for someone to take the "cropped" image

I
did that is in svn at--

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/images/AOO_logos/AOO_orb1_cropped.jpg

this is now 217 x 79
re-size it "up" to 275 x 100
with clear lettering instead of the blurring that happens
I have just about NO talent with graphics editing at all.
So thanks for any help with this.

We'll need the original vectors. I think the correct size will have the Orb be
about 70px tall and centered vertically with 15px above, below and left of it.
If the size is exactly 100 you probably don't need to do anything, but you might
want to edit css/ooo.css
#ooo-logo { height: 100px; padding-top: 4px; padding-left: 8px; }

a! light dawns -- maybe. The graphic height is actually 79 -- I didn't tract
down the css for any of this --but the rendering kept changing it to 100. It
looks better alreger actually but then there's teh blrury text.
OK, I'll play some more but it may have to wait until tomorrow.
You may want to remove the height setting.
To adjust the text banner here is the css in css/ooo.css:
#bannercenter { padding: 31pt 2pt 14pt 2pt; float: center; color: #107EC0; }
Play with the padding until pleased. I like to do this in Google Chrome.

OK, I'll try again...

I also copied Michael...

I rendered an alternate version of it -- cropped -- in

This actually looks pretty good *except* the image itself is 217 x 79, and
somehow the web site wants to render it at 275 x 100, which positioning wise is
SUPER, but then the lettering is quite blurry.

So you can keep things how they are now.

Anyway, it would be interesting to me to know why the "en" dictionary has

If volunteers will provide an alternative implementation that would be Apache
compatible then we will continue the support and include it as bundled
extensions.

The pdfimport could use pdfbox, however my understanding is that even with
a replacement the feature was not really complete without OCR
capabilities, (yes
tesseract) but well.. it involves real work(TM).

Hi Pedro,

Point taken - It is not that there are any known issues, or breakages,
only that no person has taken the step of building and pushing to the
group for testing - is that the most accurate understanding?

Yes, I think that we will eventually get to it when we find time to
think out of release mode. Most of the few things that we did
lose will need a new home, just like happened with dmake
(which is really crappy but was much more necessary than
Pentaho or pdfimport).

right - and in the case of Report Builder it is not just that the
designer is removed from the build, but updates (patches) in source
files comprising the core application are excluded also - I think that
is true, yes? Which I would take it then that in this specific
extensions case it is not just building it for publishing on SF but to
make it functional would require someone building what is then a
derivative of the entire suite, that is how it appears to me, is that
accurate do you think?

yes, someone would have to take the code and create a new extension
project on SourceForge or GoogleCode. Eventually (when it is a clean
extension) it can be built with the SDK only. But I think it was Java,
so using the NetBeans and the API plugin for example could be one option
to create an easy to built and to maintain project. I am guessing only
right now ;-)
