Re: [osol-discuss] Which is the best target build to choice hoping some good news?

2010-08-18 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
 Hi,
I'm an OS's user, my laptop run snv_118.
I'd like to mantain OS, waiting for some good news
from the community, but in the meantime I'd like to
 upgrade to a newer version.
I have just one question: which build is considered
more stable than others (from 118 to 134)?
I remember that snv_134 was afflicted by some
 critical issues.
Is possible to upgrade to a specific build or, if the
best/unique chose is to upgrade to build 134, is
there a guide to patch that release?

I've been running b134 since it came out and have had no problems so far on
laptop Acer Ferrari 4000 and home built server with AMD...

Have you tried it compile VLC via OpenSolaris

without any greater problems. Google on spec-files

I just tried, but with no luck.

Did a fresh install of pkgtools and then

$ /opt/pkgbuild/bin/pkgtool build --download SFEvlc.spec --autodeps

loss, and limiting their access, when they can be
much better stored somewhere else? I don't think I
have seen a sci-fi movie where people are carrying

Those surf tablets may replace WAP on a cellphone,

Having been a touchscreen user for quite some time, I
 can tell you that
I'm currently looking to replace my cellphone with
 one of those that has
a slideout keyboard, simply because of the lack of
 real tactile
feedback. And right now, a Windows Mobile one looks a
 lot better than
the opposition simply due to one single program:
 Birdiesync. I want to
continue using Thunderbird+Lightning on my desktop
 workstation and
Laptop, and have the contacts and calendar from that
 synced to the
mobile, without leaving a copy with Mountain View.
 Leaving a copy in
Redmond or Cupertino is a no-no as well.

But back to those tablets replacing the PC: I
 seriously doubt it. But
they will probably make another serious dent in paper
 publishing (such
as newspapers). Tablets will be nice enough for
 reading, but unsuitable
for writing. This means that the big studios will
 help Cupertion sell
them, since those are very interested in people being
 consumers of
information (just as long as they pay their
 protection-fee to the
 movie-studio-racket). But I don't see you writing
 your
pulitzer-price-winning piece there, or sorting out
 the pictures from the
riot last night. Nor do I see you writing you school

I would very much like to see a SunRay tablet (with or without keyboard).

There is a windows sun ray client (aka soft sun ray),

If so how can I download the code for OpenSolaris

 Hello,

the hint about upgrading to the latest OpenSolaris
build was really useful here. I've updated my image
to the latest gratest and emacs starts to work again
(provided 23.x release). Unfortunately this OS
version is unusable thanks to its corrupted
gnome-terminal and xterm (will report in different
thread) so I'm not able to use it.
Anyway, I've got back to old 111b and what was mu
surprise that even there its provided emacs started
working again? So yes, now I'm using emacs provided
by OS 2009.06 on OS 2009.06 which was magically
unblocked by running b129 for some time.
Unfortunatelly I'm not able to find out the reason
 behind this magic fix.

Well, I've no problems at all with gnome-terminal or xterm in snv_129, but I've
upgraded in steps. This starts too feel like Windows... ;)

start the download, FireFox just hangs. Is this a known problem? It only
happens at the Sun site https://cds.sun.com/... and with FireFox. With Opera
the download is OK and also with FireFox on other platforms...

Re: [osol-discuss] GNU emacs halt during startup on OS 2009.06

2009-12-15 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
 Hello,
I've installed OS 2009.06 last week on my laptop and
now try to get everything what's needed working on
it. I'm currently set on emacs issue which looks like
emacs is waiting for something during the startup but
 I'm not sure. I installed SUNWgnu-emacs,
SUNWgnu-emacs-gtk packages and when I type `emacs' in
gnome-terminal it halts and does not show the emacs
window. When I attach dbx to the process I see
 following backtrace:
[...]

I hope this is some easy to deal issue, since I
already do have installed the same emacs on my
desktop machine and it's working well there (on top
of the same OpenSolaris version of course).

Do you have any idea what I made wrong on my laptop
that it's emacs does not work? Anything to try or
 debug?

I also have had similar problems with Emacs. When I upgraded to b128a the
version of Emacs went to 23.1.1 and starts with no problems.

Re: [osol-discuss] GNU emacs halt during startup on OS 2009.06

2009-12-15 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
But this is strange indeed, since both version are
22.1-0.111. And one is working well (on desktop) and
another one (on laptop) not. In the worst case I can
update to devel branch. Thanks for this hint! Karel

I know. There's been a lot of strange things with Emacs in OpenSolaris lately.
And as one can not live without it, it's maddeningly...

Re: [osol-discuss] GNU emacs halt during startup on OS 2009.06

2009-12-15 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
BTW: I have tried to compile vanilla Emacs 23.1 on
this system, but it also shows the same behavior --
so perhaps this is indeed something outside of emacs
and hence update of OS is needed. I can't just
understand why on desktop everything is running
 well.

It sounds very strange. Are the installs done exactly the same?

Re: [osol-discuss] ZFS Questions

2009-12-14 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
I've been working trying to create a minimal
opensolaris VirtualBox appliance and it looks like by
default some sort of mirroring is enabled within the
filesystem. Is it possible/easy to disable this.
The appliance is just supposed to be a static
development environment for the users and will be
  backed up separately anyway.

Can you elaborate a bit on how you come to this conclusion? How do you see that
there are mirroring in place? How did you install your OpenSolaris? Which
version of OpenSolaris are you running? What version of VirtualBox? On what
platform are you running Virtualbox?

[osol-discuss] OT

2009-12-04 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
Don't know where to ask this so I try here. I found a Java application on
http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/java/demos/ which I launced with Java Web Start
on my laptop running OpenSolaris 2009.06 b125. It downloaded and started a
screen with a black circle but nothing more happened. Doing the same on Windows
XP launches the application and I can zoom in on different places at earth...

So, why does a Java app work differently on OpenSolaris than on XP???

Re: [osol-discuss] Opensolaris 2009/06 2010/02 update/upgrade problems

2009-11-29 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
you are still not answering my questions about
getting software I don't care if I cannot update
svn_127 and I should be able to use the package
manager it is there and it is what normal users will
touch if this OS ever gets into the main stream like
you have plans for it to do. the CLI has more control
I understand but if the package manager is broken
like it seems to be then I guess someone needs to
 fix it.

I tried to get about 15 packages from the
opensolaris.org repository after i did the export
PKG_CLIENT_TIMEOUT=900 from the post above and I get
to 18.51MB of 53.76MB total to download and i get the
Framework error:code 28 reason: Operation to slow.
Less than 1024 bytes/sec transfered the last 30
 seconds URL: http://pkgopensolaris.org/dev;.
 (happened 4 times)

anymore ideas before I hang it up to dry and wait for
 a stable release?

This most probably has nothing to do with the stability of the release but with
your connection speed. The update you are trying out is working correctly from
other places. Maybe you should check with your internet provider...

so if the output is useful will it help fix the
package manager? I find this to show that people are
not very flexible and very terse! If someone asks for
help don't expect them to be the same techno whiz
bang guru like you are or think you are. treat the
people who ask for help in a manner that shows you
have some personal skills and not a CRT personality.

You have been asked to provid output from some commands to show what can be the
problem you are seeing. You have failed to provide those outputs. You are the
one with an attitude.

Re: [osol-discuss] Which Download For Fresh Install

2009-10-28 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
That's the latest release version. However, you can
 pick up the
 bi-weekly development build from http://genunix.org.
 It's got almost 4
months of fixes and enhancements since the 2009.06
 release.

In my opinion it's better to start with the base install of 2009.06 and then
add the development repository and update to the latest build. Make it easier
to roll forward (and backwards) later on.

$ pfexec pkg set-publisher -O http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev opensolaris.org
$ pfexec pkg refresh --full
$ pfexec pkg image-update
$ pfexec init 6

or something like that...

[osol-discuss] new USB disk zfs/zpool commands hangs the macine

2009-08-31 Thread Thommy M . Malmström
I bought a new 1 TB external USB disk from Western Digital (1) and put it in my
2008.11 machine. The machine discovered the disk directly and I gave a 'zpool
create xpool c11t0d0´ command and then this:

# zpool list
NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT
[...]
xpool 928G 81K 928G 0% ONLINE -
# zpool status
[...]
pool: xpool
state: ONLINE
scrub: none requested
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
xpool ONLINE 0 0 0
c11t0d0 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors

So fa, so good. Then I tried to create a ZFS filesystem and copy some data like
this

# zfs create -o casesensitivity=mixed xpool/data
# rsync -a /data/ /xpool/data

After that all commands involving disk access just hanged. zfs, zpool, df can´t
even end them with ctrl-c

Then I pulled the disk USB cable and inserted it again. Then the commands
worked again but I got errors like this. (Just for this disk)

# zpool status -v xpool
pool: xpool
state: UNAVAIL
status: One or more devices are faulted in response to IO failures.
action: Make sure the affected devices are connected, then run 'zpool clear'.
see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-HC
scrub: resilver completed after 0h0m with 0 errors on Sat Aug 15 00:23:35 2009
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
xpool UNAVAIL 0 18 0 insufficient replicas
c11t0d0 UNAVAIL 12 27 0 experienced I/O failures

errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:

:

:

Trying to scrub makes all commands hang again...
# zpool scrub xpool (no output for 3 hours...)

So, is my disk dead or can I just try to create a new pool on it? Ideas???
Is there anything else I've to do to get it working as a zpool???

RC sata doesn't have this sort of guideline like old
IDE interfaces did. In IDE land, you wanted to seperate out the
 controllers you used
so that you weren't blocked when making requests to
drives on the same controller. Sata did away with this limitation.
I undesrtand, but will it be faster or slower to use
 two separate controllers?

There are never any drawbacks from utilizing all your equipment and it can only

Re: [osol-discuss] Installing IPS on a opensolaris.

Seems like I have SXCE (code named nevada) instead
 of actual Opensolaris.

Do yourself a favor and go for a VirtualBox solution if you want to get a
preview of OpenSolaris/Solaris. Just install the latest VirtualBox on the
nearest computer you have around and then install OpenSolaris/Solaris in Vbox.

 Hi Thommy,

Two bugs have been fixed in OpenSolaris lately:
b96 Crash when printing use firefox 3 in papiJobStreamOpen.
b97 cupsGetDests hang when cups service is not on.

I'd suggest that you could wait to upgrade to b99(Firefox 3.0.1 in
b97/b98 has some bookmarks problem). If the bug still exists, there
could be another bug for printing.

I upgraded to b98 yesterday but I haven't tested printing yet. My

the slow firefox/thunderbird seems to be an known Xorg problem for ATI on my
Acer Ferrari 4005 with ATI Mobility x700

So I created a xorg.conf to put in /etc/X11 and suddenly
firefox/thunderbird behaved
normal, although the keyboard went incredibly slow. Had to remove the
xorg.conf.

I'm looking forward to b99 and to test printing.

Cheers,

Then upgrade your system to b98 and replace firefox
 as I previously showed.

I did, no change. I actually don't think it is firefox because thunderbird is
also slow as a cow as is the whole window system. Switching window workspace
takes 5 seconds. Used to happen immediately when touching the Ctrl-Alt
left-arrow...

 I have no idea
what kind of processor or graphics your Ferrari uses
but the nVidia drivers have been updated
 considerably since b86 was released.

The Acer Ferrari is (or at least was) some kind of standar within Sun. It's a
AMD Turion64 with ATI graphics. Not the best choice for Solaris but I've seen
no problems until now.

 This system works almost perfectly:

 $ head -1 /etc/release
 OpenSolaris 2008.11 snv_98
  X86

Mine is the same, but is the worst version based on nevada that I've seen. And
I've been testing _every_ build.

 Download the iso from http://www.genunix.org

I did.

couple of questions I have about my migration:

Using ZFS samba sharing, I have sharing setup but creation permission
masks are a lil weird. For example, I browse to my SCXE server and get a
login box, ok I setup smb auth in pam.conf. So I login and I'm presented
with my shares. Now I create a file, but when viewing the perms from a
console, I see that its got no perms at all. I know that samba has a
creation mask option so I went looking in smb.conf, only to find that
the only smb.conf is smb.conf-example so it's apparently not using it.

I have to wonder, as my zfs pool is shared fine using zfs set
sharesmb=name=public tank, is smb.conf in use at all? Is it even using
samba or is it using CIFS? How can I go about setting up the finer
 points of the samba/CIFS sharing?

Anything that can help a linux/samba geek migrate to solaris would be so
 helpful to me right now.

Google is your friend. Here's a starter kit for ZFS/CIFS:

 \E[2J clears the whole screen
 \E[?47h Use alternate screen buffer
 \E[?47l Use Normal Screen Buffer

Whether to clear the screen or not is a personal decision.

We still do not know what the OP really sees and which problems he has.
My editor ved works in the alternate screen buffer for a long time as
I am using my own termcap implementation and have a ~/.termcap file to
overwrite unwanted global behavior. Ved edits in the alternate screeen
and restores the standard screen after editing. If less does not do this,
then there may be a bug in less that is just triggered by the change in
terminfo. Jufging too wuick is always wrong.

However, in this case, Solaris' terminal definition was missing
definitions completely and that was a bug.

 They have now been added.

While it is a personal decision, this finally meets the behaviour that
many users that are not from the Solaris world expect.

Oh, so it's OK to give us that have used Solaris since it was new a
smack on the nose?

The init and term strings have been traditionally in is and rs.

The official termcap database from Eric Raymond includes:

 smcup=\E7\E[?47h
 rmcup=\E[2J\E[?47l\E8

 for xterm R6

 Let us disassemble:

'sc' - '\E7' save current cursor position
'rc' - '\E8' restore cursor to last position of save_cursor
 \E[2J clears the whole screen
 \E[?47h Use alternate screen buffer

Good software products change to meet user expectations as their users change.

Solaris has always had a rumour of being backwards compatible...
Let's face it; most of the folks that are used to the previous
behaviour or who wanted it are now in the minority when looking at the

UNIX and UNIX-like world as a whole.

Most of them are also used to ext2 filesystems, /etc/init.d/* files,
strace and other modern inventions in the UNIX land...
You have a way to get back the old behaviour if you want it, and I
have also pointed out that this particular behaviour is not because of
the fix that was made directly, but because of how gnome-terminal uses
 alternate screens.

I find your argument about using Solaris since it was new ironic
given that gnome-terminal clearly hasn't existed that long :)

I, mostly, use the terminal that is default in the window environment I
use.
gnome-terminal has nice features like tabs, which I use a lot. In
Solaris the behaviour
of less has always been to not clear the screen at exit IIRC. It looks
as if the, in my view,
error lays in gnome-terminal.
I would expect you to be a die-hard xterm user instead, in which case
you could just use the titleInhibit xresource property to get back the
 behaviour you want.

Well, as I stated earlier, xterm was _not_ affected by this bug fix.

The terminfo data for terminal type xterm changed.

Looks like someone has tried to fix something that wasn't broken... :-(

 Why do you assume this?

The behaviour looks like it could be correct to me.
 Can you prove that
less is not supposed to do this?

Well, it hasn't behaved like this for the past +10 years that I've daily used
less in Solaris.
It also lessens the usability as the data you are looking to disappears,
meaning that you have to open another terminal window to type commands in. _I_
have never seen any usage of the current behaviour, but the previous I use all
the time.

I thought less was to give more usability than more but now more gives more
than less, more or less.

[osol-discuss] less

Seems as if there was a change in default behaviour of the less command between
b72 and b76. It now clears the screen at exit which I find most annoying. Or is

man less
[...]
 -X or --no-init
Disables sending the termcap initialization and deini-
tialization strings to the terminal. This is sometimes
desirable if the deinitialization string does something
  unnecessary, like clearing the screen.
