Hi, I'm an OS's user, my laptop run snv_118. I'd like to mantain OS, waiting for some good news from the community, but in the meantime I'd like to upgrade to a newer version. I have just one question: which build is considered more stable than others (from 118 to 134)? I remember that snv_134 was afflicted by some critical issues. Is possible to upgrade to a specific build or, if the best/unique chose is to upgrade to build 134, is there a guide to patch that release? Have you tried it compile VLC via OpenSolaris spec-files? They are basically a diff to the ordinary make file, so you can compile on OSol without any greater problems. Google on spec-files I just tried, but with no luck. It is ridiculous to go through installation of windows/linux just to play movies/videos and voice/video chat. http://www.opensolaris.com/learn/features/whats-new/2 0906/#1 says it is for [b]users [/b]also (Toshiba laptops, that are sold, are not used as production servers I think!!!). Very few things need to be done to use a server as a desktop. No good business person denies the huge desktop market. If you look around the tools you need are there. Leaving a copy in Redmond or Cupertino is a no-no as well. But back to those tablets replacing the PC: I seriously doubt it. But they will probably make another serious dent in paper publishing (such as newspapers). Tablets will be nice enough for reading, but unsuitable for writing. This means that the big studios will help Cupertion sell them, since those are very interested in people being consumers of information (just as long as they pay their protection-fee to the movie-studio-racket). But I don't see you writing your pulitzer-price-winning piece there, or sorting out the pictures from the riot last night. Nor do I see you writing you school essays there. But with citrix et.al. and rdp/vnc from a windows machine to your ipad, and then running the soft sun ray in fullscreen, at least, you can make it happen, although a native soft sun ray app for ipad would be a really cool thing... Hi, Sorry for the possibly silly question, but at home e I've gotten rather used to the Macintosh feature of having a filename and content index available at the top of the screen. Speeds things up considerably. At work, they don't like Macintoshes very much, so I use OpenSolaris as my desktop and was wondering if there's something with the same features in OpenSolaris? I think it's tracker that you are looking for. Enable it from Systems-Preferences-Startup Applications and check the boxes for Tracker and Tracker Applet. You must log out and in again I think. BTW. But I'm not bad at formatting code and knowing where comments should and shouldn't be. Is code fairly clean already? Could I use my free time to reformat code to conform to a specific style? If so how can I download the code for OpenSolaris and make these changes? Or would it require me to pick a project within OpenSolaris (JDS/Kernel/IPS/etc)? There are plenty of opportunities in this area still, in part because ti is 20+ years old :) Yeah, yeah, I know. Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow... etcetera. I've no luck with that (which I of course tried first)... don't just look at the name of the boot environment, it's simply counted upwards and after 129 comes 130 ;) boot the new BE and run uname -a to see which build you're actually running - I bet it will show snv_131. Depends on your hardware - there are some known bugs on some hardware, but it works fine on many systems (unfortunately, that includes all of mine, so I'm not sure what problems you may be having - there are some Intel graphics chipset bug fixes coming in 132). Hello, the hint about upgrading to the latest OpenSolaris build was really useful here. I've updated my image to the latest gratest and emacs starts to work again (provided 23.x release). Unfortunately this OS version is unusable thanks to its corrupted gnome-terminal and xterm (will report in different thread) so I'm not able to use it. Anyway, I've got back to old 111b and what was mu surprise that even there its provided emacs started working again? So yes, now I'm using emacs provided by OS 2009.06 on OS 2009.06 which was magically unblocked by running b129 for some time. Unfortunatelly I'm not able to find out the reason behind this magic fix. Well, I've no problems at all with gnome-terminal or xterm in snv_129, but I've upgraded in steps. I'm on OpenSolaris 2009.06 b128a with FireFox 3.5.5 and when I try to download something from Sun coming to the registration part and it is just about to start the download, FireFox just hangs. Is this a known problem? It only happens at the Sun site https://cds.sun.com/... and with FireFox. Hello, I've installed OS 2009.06 last week on my laptop and now try to get everything what's needed working on it. I'm currently set on emacs issue which looks like emacs is waiting for something during the startup but I'm not sure. I installed SUNWgnu-emacs, SUNWgnu-emacs-gtk packages and when I type `emacs' in gnome-terminal it halts and does not show the emacs window. When I attach dbx to the process I see following backtrace: [...] I hope this is some easy to deal issue, since I already do have installed the same emacs on my desktop machine and it's working well there (on top of the same OpenSolaris version of course). Do you have any idea what I made wrong on my laptop that it's emacs does not work? Anything to try or debug? I also have had similar problems with Emacs. I've been working trying to create a minimal opensolaris VirtualBox appliance and it looks like by default some sort of mirroring is enabled within the filesystem. Is it possible/easy to disable this. The appliance is just supposed to be a static development environment for the users and will be backed up separately anyway. Don't know where to ask this so I try here. I found a Java application on http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/java/demos/ which I launced with Java Web Start on my laptop running OpenSolaris 2009.06 b125. It downloaded and started a screen with a black circle but nothing more happened. Doing the same on Windows XP launches the application and I can zoom in on different places at earth... you are still not answering my questions about getting software I don't care if I cannot update svn_127 and I should be able to use the package manager it is there and it is what normal users will touch if this OS ever gets into the main stream like you have plans for it to do. the CLI has more control I understand but if the package manager is broken like it seems to be then I guess someone needs to fix it. I tried to get about 15 packages from the opensolaris.org repository after i did the export PKG_CLIENT_TIMEOUT=900 from the post above and I get to 18.51MB of 53.76MB total to download and i get the Framework error:code 28 reason: Operation to slow. Less than 1024 bytes/sec transfered the last 30 seconds URL: http://pkgopensolaris.org/dev;. (happened 4 times) anymore ideas before I hang it up to dry and wait for a stable release? This most probably has nothing to do with the stability of the release but with your connection speed. The update you are trying out is working correctly from other places. Maybe you should check with your internet provider... so if the output is useful will it help fix the package manager? I find this to show that people are not very flexible and very terse! In my opinion it's better to start with the base install of 2009.06 and then add the development repository and update to the latest build. RC sata doesn't have this sort of guideline like old IDE interfaces did. In IDE land, you wanted to seperate out the controllers you used so that you weren't blocked when making requests to drives on the same controller. Sata did away with this limitation. I undesrtand, but will it be faster or slower to use two separate controllers? Seems like I have SXCE (code named nevada) instead of actual Opensolaris. Do yourself a favor and go for a VirtualBox solution if you want to get a preview of OpenSolaris/Solaris. Just install the latest VirtualBox on the nearest computer you have around and then install OpenSolaris/Solaris in Vbox. How come the NWAM/DHCP just suddenly starts playing jokes? I have a perfectly running system with 2009.06 and I've restarted it several times and wireless working perfectly with NWAM and DHCP. Today when I started the machine I have no network access to this machine (other machines on the same wireless is OK). I've made no changes what so ever... Then upgrade your system to b98 and replace firefox as I previously showed. I did, no change. I actually don't think it is firefox because thunderbird is also slow as a cow as is the whole window system. Switching window workspace takes 5 seconds. Used to happen immediately when touching the Ctrl-Alt left-arrow... I have no idea what kind of processor or graphics your Ferrari uses but the nVidia drivers have been updated considerably since b86 was released. The Acer Ferrari is (or at least was) some kind of standar within Sun. It's a AMD Turion64 with ATI graphics. Not the best choice for Solaris but I've seen no problems until now. This system works almost perfectly: $ head -1 /etc/release OpenSolaris 2008.11 snv_98 X86 Mine is the same, but is the worst version based on nevada that I've seen. And I've been testing _every_ build. Luckily my own comment made me realize that I've seen something about DRI and ATI. http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6718572 So I created a xorg.conf to put in /etc/X11 svcadm disable graphical-login/gdm Log in and su then run /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure vi /root/xorg.conf.new Comment out Load dri cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf svcadm enable graphical-login/gdm or somethinhg similar. The only caveat now is that typing is slow like a cow instead. About 1 second between key press and seeing it on the screen... No need to wipe anything, just do a fresh install on the disk you used before and the installation will make a newfs for you. Do not select Upgrade Install... Hi, I can also verify that it now works as it has worked on many other systems for a long time (i.e. GNU/Linux, *BSDs, etc.) As a long time FreeBSD user, I don't remember seeing this particular behavior on these systems. And speaking about the new behavior, I can revert to the preferred method simply by setting PAGER to more, instead of less (although bug id 6622763 says that more is affected too). At least for an editor, I think using the alternate screen is a distinct improvement. It's too long between the times I fire up vi to remember how it used to behave. Solaris has always had a rumour of being backwards compatible... Let's face it; most of the folks that are used to the previous behaviour or who wanted it are now in the minority when looking at the UNIX and UNIX-like world as a whole. Most of them are also used to ext2 filesystems, /etc/init.d/* files, strace and other modern inventions in the UNIX land... You have a way to get back the old behaviour if you want it, and I have also pointed out that this particular behaviour is not because of the fix that was made directly, but because of how gnome-terminal uses alternate screens. I find your argument about using Solaris since it was new ironic given that gnome-terminal clearly hasn't existed that long :) I, mostly, use the terminal that is default in the window environment I use. gnome-terminal has nice features like tabs, which I use a lot. In Solaris the behaviour of less has always been to not clear the screen at exit IIRC. It looks as if the, in my view, error lays in gnome-terminal. I would expect you to be a die-hard xterm user instead, in which case you could just use the titleInhibit xresource property to get back the behaviour you want. The behaviour looks like it could be correct to me. Can you prove that less is not supposed to do this? Well, it hasn't behaved like this for the past +10 years that I've daily used less in Solaris. It also lessens the usability as the data you are looking to disappears, meaning that you have to open another terminal window to type commands in. _I_ have never seen any usage of the current behaviour, but the previous I use all the time. I thought less was to give more usability than more but now more gives more than less, more or less. This is sometimes desirable if the deinitialization string does something unnecessary, like clearing the screen.
