Re: [osol-help] Cannot Chainload OpenSolaris 2009.06 from second Hard Drive

It has probably to do with the GRUB version.
Can you boot, if you change the boot order in the BIOS?
Don't forget to change hd1 to hd0. If this works you can check if you can
chainload
Ubuntu from the Solaris Grub. Them the next step is to swap both hard drives.

Re: [osol-help] Multiple Frequencies

2009-06-22 Thread Emmanuel De Paepe
Thanks again.

Well after all I might consider using it how it is now.
The dissipated heat of the CPU looks reasonable (because it's a mobile CPU)
when continuously clocked at maximum frequency.

The two main reasons why I would like to keep Solaris in this laptop, is the
performance of the wireless driver and performance of the Flash player in
Solaris.

Like expected powertop gives the same info as kstat.
'powertop' tells that the system works during 100% of the time at maximum speed
(2GHz).
'kstat' tells that under supported frequencies there is only one: 2GHz.

When I do the same for my desktop (Q6600), I got the same info, two
frequencies: 1.6GHz:2.4GHz
Of course 'powertop' gives plenty other info.

[osol-help] Multiple Frequencies

2009-06-21 Thread Emmanuel De Paepe
I've successfully installed OpenSolaris on my Packard Bell EasyNote laptop.
There is however one major problem. The kernel uses only the maximum speed of
the CPU. This means that it is dissipating quite some heat. I don't mind for a
regular computer, but this is not good for a laptop.
In other words, OpenSolaris becomes useless since it drains all the power of
the battery in a very short time.

CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60

'kstat -m cpu_info' shows only one frequency: 2GHz

Is there no support in the Solaris kernel for multiple frequencies, like there
is for instance in the Intel Q6600?

I'm also running OpenSolaris on a Tyan 2892 without any problems for several

Re: [osol-help] 2008 11 very slow??

No I don't have an on board graphic adapter.
I have an NVIDIA graphic card, since I knew Sun has pretty good drivers for
these adapters.
Do you also experience that when shutting down the machine, that after the last
step it stops but
does not power off? Well sometimes it does, however these occasions are rare.

Another thing to mention: on my Asus motherboard Solaris 10 always worked
perfectly and was the only OS I have never required rebooting. Until I did the
last upgrade (10/08) it didn't boot anymore, even not in single user mode. SXCE

The best results I have was with a Tyan Thunder S2892, with two AMD dual core

cores like in Solaris 10 all the time.
The most amazing thing with this motherboard are the network interfaces: there
are three and OpenSolaris always selects automatically the right one. Something
which is not always the case with other motherboards.

The results on my Asus P5KR (Q6600 and 4GB) are somewhat less. The OS works
fine and is very fast, but the GUI takes ages to come up.

All installations I have ever done of Solaris 10, OpenSolaris, SXDE and SXCE
the bootloader was always installed on the drive the OS was installed on.
Just to see that the OS works you can boot from the 2nd hd by BIOS (changing
boot order for example).
Otherwise there are programs (like Supergrub) that will install GRUB on the
master boot record of your first hard drive. This will allow you to boot
Windows on your first hard drive or to chainload (simply jump from the first to
the second hard drive) the second drive -> booting OpenSolaris.

takes a while.
I have also seen the same on a Tyan Motherboard (S2892). While it was
previuosly shuting down pretty fast, it takes longer now.
For my Asus motherboard (P5KR) it's even worse: OpenSolaris and SXCE take ages
before the GUI comes up and it takes the same period to go in shut down.
The latest Solaris 10 even doesn't boot anymore on this motherboard.
So in my opinion there is definitely something wrong, since issues appear on
three completely different motherboards.

Some people claim it can be because of a PC has multiple network adapters. I

There is a menu where you can configure the network, after first having

I have never used static IPs. If I'm correct it also needs to be reserved in

Can this cause an NMI during boot?
I have a Chenbro server running OpenSolaris, it has run virtual all builds up
to 99.
Every time it boots I see a notice about NMI.
Otherwise the server just works perfect.

Re: [osol-help] Accessing Windows Files in OpenSolaris

FAT32 should work out of the box, at least for Solaris 10.
I use one data disk which is formatted in FAT32, because it can easily be
accessed from most OS,
including Solaris. I haven't tried NTFS yet.

Re: [osol-help] OpenSolaris CE intel 64bit

2008-09-03 Thread Emmanuel De Paepe
32-bit or 64-bit it doesn't matter, the OS automatically selects the right one.
I successfully installed CE, Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris on systems with 64-bit
Intels (Q6600) and older 32-bit Xeons.
The only thing you might notice is that some install media always select 32-bit
to boot from. Once the OS is successfully installed the OS should be rightly
configuerd.

Re: [osol-help] grub problem after pkg image-update

2008-08-16 Thread Emmanuel De Paepe
How did you update your system?
Below is the correct procedure to update your system:

I
General instructions on updating to the latest OpenSolaris development build
== =
1) Before using the "image-update" subcommand, it is recommended that
the latest available version of the IPS software be installed for your
current boot environment

$ BUILD=`uname -v | sed s/snv_//`
$ pfexec pkg refresh
$ pfexec pkg install [EMAIL PROTECTED]
$ pfexec pkg install [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2) Before proceeding to the next step, verify your OpenSolaris build
number

$ echo $BUILD

3) If you are running build 93 or greater, you can use "image-update"
directly as follows

$ pfexec pkg image-update

4) If you are using a build prior to 93, it is recommended one apply
the update directly to an alternate boot environment. First, display
the list of the existing BEs on the system

$ beadm list
BE Active Active on Mountpoint Space
Name reboot Used
 -- - -- -
opensolaris no no - 33.92M
opensolaris-1 yes yes - 17.06M

Next, choose the name of a new BE - if the most recent created BE is of
the form "opensolaris-” where is an integer, then a suitable
choice for the new BE is “opensolaris-“. In the above example,
the new BE would be “opensolaris-2″.

Then, execute the following sequence to create, mount, update and
activate the new BE

$ pfexec beadm create opensolaris-
$ pfexec beadm mount opensolaris- /mnt
$ pfexec pkg -R /mnt image-update
$ pfexec beadm activate opensolaris-

5) If you are running build 86, one additional work-around is
required.

>> IMPORTANT <<

Due to changes in the GRUB boot system, one must manually update the
Master Boot Record (MBR) to include these latest changes. Failure to
follow these instructions when updating from 2008.05 (build 86) to a
later build will result in a system that does not boot by default and
instead the original boot environment must be manually selected.

Update the GRUB configuration on your ZFS boot device(s) using

$ pfexec /mnt/boot/solaris/bin/update_grub -R /mnt

When you’re ready to boot into the updated boot environment, you can
reboot(1M) or init(1M) as usual.

Indeed bad network drivers could also be the culprit.

I remember having a laptop running Vista continuously loosing wireless

The issue was solved when I moved to Ubuntu. A little bit later somebody told

Instead of disabling/enabling just try to restart your 'nwam':
# svcadm restart nwam
That's what I use when the network interface is suddenly taken down.
If it's still not working you will have to disable the nwam permenantly and use
regulat dhcp.

The OpenSolaris network connection, especially 'nwam' is not working very well.
I have one machine where the network interface is taken down, every time I want
to write
some big files to a shared folder (NFS) on a server. This same machine can also
run Solaris 10 and I have never had any problems like this with network
connections.

On the other hand I have a server with three ethernet ports (only one
connected) and believe or not but 'nwam' selects the right adapter and
otherwise works fine.

Thanks for the feedback.
I was just wondering because not all USB memory sticks work under Solaris:

[osol-help] OpenSolaris update instructions

2008-08-15 Thread Emmanuel De Paepe
I have these instructions available in order to update OpenSolaris (see below).
If I have already upgraded to build 94, can I really omit step 4 and 5?
And if so what is the difference?

General instructions on updating to the latest OpenSolaris development build
===
1) Before using the "image-update" subcommand, it is recommended that
the latest available version of the IPS software be installed for your
current boot environment

   $ BUILD=`uname -v | sed s/snv_//`
   $ pfexec pkg refresh
   $ pfexec pkg install [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   $ pfexec pkg install [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2) Before proceeding to the next step, verify your OpenSolaris build
number

   $ echo $BUILD

3) If you are running build 93 or greater, you can use "image-update"
directly as follows

   $ pfexec pkg image-update

4) If you are using a build prior to 93, it is recommended one apply
the update directly to an alternate boot environment. First, display
the list of the existing BEs on the system

   $ beadm list
   BEActive Active on Mountpoint Space
   Name reboot   Used
     -- - -- -
   opensolaris   no no-  33.92M
   opensolaris-1 yesyes   -  17.06M

Next, choose the name of a new BE - if the most recent created BE is of
the form "opensolaris-” where is an integer, then a suitable
choice for the new BE is “opensolaris-“. In the above example,
the new BE would be “opensolaris-2″.

Then, execute the following sequence to create, mount, update and
activate the new BE

   $ pfexec beadm create opensolaris-
   $ pfexec beadm mount opensolaris- /mnt
   $ pfexec pkg -R /mnt image-update
   $ pfexec beadm activate opensolaris-

   $ pfexec /mnt/boot/solaris/bin/update_grub -R /mnt

When you’re ready to boot into the updated boot environment, you can
reboot(1M) or init(1M) as usual.

I type the command on the console connected to the remote machine (B).

By the way, one of the PCIe slots has an angle adapter so I can attach a
graphical adapter to this one. Or since you mentioned 'workstation', I could
actually build the whole motherboard in a workstation frame so I would get rid
of the excessive vacuum cleaner sound.
In the end I paid this server 400 euro which is fairly price I think.

I first installed Solaris 10, but this was hanging all the time (upon init 5-6)
when updating.
So I installed OpenSolaris and for so far it runs fairly well. During
installation setup it just took extremely long before it could find the four
hard disks

Just two questions:
When adding two identical graphical adapters is there anything you need to take
into account?
I' m just wondering since you have two identical cards on the same bus. However
one is closer to the CPU(s) than the other.

This S2892 motherboard has RAID, did you also manage to configure this?
