As most will say, I will not jump the bandwagon until they have some decent

Is your computer configured to boot from CD? Older computers can't.
Newer ones can be configured in the BIOS to do so.

XPS m1210 is an almost-new Dell laptop, as far as I recall. Gabriel
probably needs to press the key (can't remember which) to select boot
target, and select to boot from the CD/DVD drive rather than hard
drive.

Regards,

Mine uses the F12 key (Dell Inspiron 5160) and while the new ones *may*
be different, I don't really know why they would change that behavior.

Does it mean that while GNOME is moving to /usr for 10.3, KDE won't
move to /usr until KDE4 becomes the default?

ps for KDE4, substitute /opt/kde for /usr, so /opt/kde/bin ->
/usr/bin, etc. There won't be many directories with 'kde' in their
names.

At least RPM supports multilib, meaning you can happily run 32- and
64-bit applications side-by-side.

The binary driver situation is all the more reason to support vendors
that have more enlightened driver policies. Or, failing that, those
that can provide reliable 64-bit drivers (grudging lift of the hat to
nVidia on this).

Hence my statement about "3rd party drivers or programs", which you snipped.

I did say that linux64 is great for generic server roles on largish hardware,
where you can do everything using what ships from the linux vendor, and where
the hardware is big enough to benefit from the 64-bit OS.

Many vendors make only a 32-bit version of their linux offerings, or if they
do make a 64-bit version, it's not well tested, and buggy. I speak from bitter
experiences in the trenches, and can cite examples.

Thanks to all who responded so far. I really want to try 64 bit again in the
future. I dont know enough about it to tell the difference right now. I don't
run a lot of media apps or high graphics apps.

BTW, i "re-installed - ran make, make install for the RT61- one more time and
it came back. Something was suddenly interfering with it. I am now responding o
this email under 10.2 using the ralink card so Phillip appears to be right.

I am just no sure if down the road, I will encounter issues. I know everyone
has an opinion, so let's not go there. I just think I want to go back to 32
bit, as most of my experience has been with it. I am not a techie by training,
I am a physician, so I'm not as savvy as most.

Again, thanks to all.

That's just not true! The only case where a 64 bit Linux can be a
problem is when you need to use a binary only driver and the
manufacturer doesn't supply it. My experience shows that open source
drivers are mostly just as bad or good on a 32 bit Linux as they are
on a 64 bit one.

So if a driver doesn't work under 64 bit Linux chances are very low
it'll suddenly start to work as a 32 bit version.

Thanks, since I don't have much to loose, I agree, go back to clean install of
32 bit. I know I can use atheros card without problem. I already have a box
with a card based on it. I choose the ralink for reported 64 bit usage.

Nowhere did I state I thought it would solve my problem. I am going back to 32
bit for a better chance at future drivers.

The question was how and could I go back from my present install. I have had
better luck with32 bit SuSE in the past.

64-bit installs are great for generic server roles, on largish hardware. For
desktop use, or any situation where you need to worry about 3rd party software
or drivers, linux/32 is the way to go, based on my education in the school of
hard knocks.

There's no easy way to convert a 64-bit install to 32-bit. Just save off the
important stuff somewhere, and do a clean install. You're much more likely to
have success resolving any driver issues on the 32-bit install.

[opensuse] 64bit gone sour, downgrade to 32bit, how?

2007-08-12 Thread kbboykin
Hello All,

The title kinda sez it all. I installed openSuSE 64 bit on a "homebrew" with
a 3.2 GHz P4 ECS P4M800PRO-M MB with 2 GB of ram, 80 G SATA drive. It was
installed as dualboot witth Vista Home premium. I have used SuSE since 6.4 off
and on and used it heavily from 7.1 to 9.3. Then work forced me back to learn
WinXP Pro and now Vista. I have installed 10.0, 10.2 on other machines prior to
installing 10.2 default on this box. Originally I was using the on-board
Realtek NIC, wired. I rarely used 10.2 and it sailed along effortless. I moved
to a new residence and had to go wireless. My researched suggested RaLink
RT2561 as compatible with both Linux and Vista, so I bought a card based on
that chipset. Vista worked right away. It took some time to get it working
under Linux. Then on Friday, I decided to try Linspire 2.0 LiveCD which failed
on this box. Every since then the RaLink wireless PCI appears removed to the
Linux network under 10.2. If I run lspci -v the card is
 there,
so it is seen by the kernel. I decided to go with driverloader and it helps
but no cigar.

A long story to ask this simple question. I want to go back to 32 bit. How?
Wipe it clean and start from scratch, realizing I still will have the Ralink
PCI card (RT61), and can the 64bit be downgraded to 32 bit? Much help
appreciated. If this has already been answered in a thread somewhere, please
forgive me.

Thanks in advance,

[opensuse] Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter and NetworkManager

2007-08-12 Thread Sam Preston
Hi all,

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite laptop (A215-S4807), and am
dual-booting Vista and OpenSUSE 10.2. The laptop has an Atheros
AR5007EG wireless NIC. After searching around, I tried installing the
ndiswrapper module and the windows drivers, and 'ndiswrapper -l'
states that everything is okay. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to
get the connection to work. I'm new to setting up a wireless
connetion in linux, so I'm not sure if the driver isn't working
correctly, or if I'm just not setting up the connection correctly.
'iwconfig' shows wlan0, so I try:

>iwconfig wlan0 essid "my_network_name"

after which 'iwconfig wlan0' shows signal strength, etc. I then try:

>ifconfig wlan0 up
>ifup wlan0

I get a warning that NetworkManager is being notified to set up the
DHCP connection, but I don't seem to actually connect -- I can open up
a browser and I just get a 'page not found' error. What should I be
doing to test this connection? Also, the NetworkManager icon in the
system tray still says that there is a connection to eth0, not wlan0.

Thanks for any help,

-Sam

No, it is a different version with some extra capabilities, priced at
300$, and only for windows:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/acrobatstd.html

The other product that can save the data is the profesional version. Three
versions, I think.

It appears you haven't understood the problem.

Ok, have a look at any these PDF forms:

(click on one of the flags for your language)

Open any of them in acrobat reader (free edition), Linux or Windows. You
will see a yellow message bar at the top saying:

] You can not save data typed into this form
] Please print your complete form if you would like a copy for your records

It will also have a button named "Print Form" and a click box "Highlight
fields". If you hover the mouse of one of the fields, it will change from
a hand to the editing tool. Click and a pop up message will warn you again
that data can not be saved, only printed in full.

That is the problem, saving the form data.

Yes, it is possible to print the completed form to a file, and convert it
to pdf in several ways. That is not what we are seeking for. We want to
save the data alone, a feature that has been removed from the free reader
(version 5 did save it), and that you can find in the standard reader,
priced at 300$, windows only
().

More info on how to save form data, from adobe:

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=328647&sliceId=2

Associated to this problem is the fact that the adobe reader is the only
viewer in Linux (or to be precise, those included with SuSE) that allows
filling forms: neither kpdf, evince, etc, can even fill those forms, even
though openoffice can create PDF forms.

Thus, two problems:

 1) save form data alone
 2) find a viewer in Linux that allows filling forms, aside from adobe
reader.

No, it isn't opinion.

The fact that one MUST use the CLI for some things on a modern OS
desktop such as KDE - even in this day and regardless of ease - is
simply sad.

Were I able to open a nice GUI and click a few options, I'd much
appreicate it over having to type...

mencoder -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd -vf
scale=720:480,harddup -srate 48000 -af lavcresample=48000 -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=5000:keyint=18:aspect=16/9:acodec=ac3:abitrate=192
-ofps 3/1001 -o netbeans_test_record.mpg netbeans_out.ogg

...to encode a video.

(The test screen capture listed above is located here -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQAjPIZR2dg - by the way.)

I want a nice GUI like SMB4K (http://smb4k.berlios.de/) for selecting
networks of all sorts and setting mount points. This is MUCH
preferable to slogging through some incomprehensible man page to
figure options on a CLI-only app.

That said, if I were administering a SLES box from a remote location,
I'd want to be able to do most things through the CLI. That - believe
it or not - has been my argument against Windows "Server" products
such as NT 4, 2K and 2K3.

In a nutshell, I want the OPTION of doing it MY way. If I want to do
CLI work then I wouldn't need a GUI. If I am running a full-featured
GUI such as KDE or something else, then I shouldn't have to EVER go
into the CLI.

Ok, a friend has tried it in with reader 8 in a windows 2000, and no,
saving is not possible. It pops the known message saying so. If you can
save it in windows it is because you don't use the free reader.

[opensuse] Starting KDE4

2007-08-12 Thread Stephen P. Molnar

I just used YAST2 to install KDE4.

According to en.opensuse.org/KDE4 'The KDE4 package install into the
/usr prefix hence KDE3 and KDE4 can be installed at the same
time.' After the installation process was finished there were no
/usr prefix subdirectories. The only KDE4 specific s/d's I can find
are /usr/lib/kde4 and /usr/share/kde4. Although perhaps I have missed some.

My question is how do I start KDE4? Happily, startx at the command
prompt still starts KDE3.5 so I haven't hosed my desktop.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[opensuse] 10.3 install repositories

2007-08-12 Thread Robert Lewis
Early on in the installation a prompt asks if you would like to have
the repositories added.
I think it may be a big mistake to say yes as this easily increases
the time for an install to
4-6 times. I have also seen hangs and multiple times when it goes out
to collect information over the net which becomes very painful.

Also, as a result, i think, of making this choice the prompts telling me what
is happening during install become nonsense. That is, when the prompt
says things
like: -> Configure Display Manager
or later -> Users, instead I wait for an hour while the its downloading
information from a repository. I see this happening over and over again
during a single installation. Probably 6-8 times it's collection what appears
to be the same information.

I'll try another reinstall tomorrow without making this choice.

The thing is I really don't think my system has a virus, not even in windows,
I went and installed Avast Linux Workstation updated its virus database and
scanned my system and according to avast the only problems that it found is
that it wasn't able to read a couple of files, no viruses or anything. Then
to make sure it wasn't under Windows I booted windows updated Avast's virus
database then rebooted it into safemode and scanned from there and it came up
clean. Then to be sure I used the Microsoft One Care online scanner to see
if it could find anything, again every was clean.

BTW I know that clamAV does not do real-time scanning and that I have to run
freshclam to update its database, and I did that before I ran it the first
time.

Ok, I messed up and had my IDE harddrive set
for slave. After quite a long tme a small one line
message warned me that no harddrive was present.

However, I went on for grins and it then told the
installation to install the repositories. Before the
actual hard failure where the file system would be
written a lot of time passed.

I think it would have been better to have checked
early on for a proper harddrive and if not present
then abort.

Should this be bugreported?

I know. I started to anonymize the output of errs/warns/infos (I think
people don't want me to send their e-mail-adress over the mailing
list). Then the problem was gone out of sudden (as written in my last
e-mail). That's why I did not send it.

All I've read about DNS and postfix I could imagine that this was the
problem. But I tried the "disable_dns_lookups = yes" switch (as far as
I know it should stop all DNS queries). It didn't help...

You may also expierence a problem related to DVD-R media which is not
*universally* compatable with all burners (iirc). And after reading
the lifetime expectation and failure rates related to the two media
standards, DVD-R and DVD+R, I have converted *all* DVD-R media I have

To the best of my knowledge, right now, the only problem seems to have been

Done a complete reinstall. The compiz-fusion for 10.3 are in cyberorg
SUSEFactory repository instead of 10.2. 10.2 versions have too many
dependency problems. The NVIDIA drivers show up in Yast now, but they
are for the wrong kernel version. I did install the NVIDIA 100.14.11
driver with no problem. Everything worked upto the
sudo nvidia-xconfig –composite –allow-glx-with-composite –render-accel –
add-argb-glx-visuals

It comes back with invalid option -composite. Guess it is because of not
having the susefied nvidia drivers for 10.3. Maybe in the near future.

No, the feature was _removed_. I'm told that adobe 5.x had that feature,
and that now we need the "standard" reader, which is not free. I don't
even know yet if there is a linux version of it.

And they are pushing pdf to become an ISO standard...

I don't see what that has to do with it, since the Reader product is
distributed free of charge. Quite unlike Acrobat itself, which is as
grossly overpriced as all Adobe's products.

We have tried both windows and linux with Adobe Reader (free edition), and
the problem is the same, even with version 8. The problem can be solved in
windows using the "Standard" edition, which is not free.

The other solution is to use "LiveCycle" from adobe to generate a
"rights-enabled PDF form":

] Using Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions, you can create a rights-enabled
] PDF form that lets Adobe Reader users comment on, fill, save,
] distribute, submit, and add digital signatures to the form. When you
] open a rights-enabled PDF form in Adobe Reader, a dialog box appears
] outlining the extended capabilities of the PDF file.

This, of course, I have not tried, as I'm not the one creating those pdfs.

It is an overkill, but the form is displayed incorrectly. The end result

That's not the problem. I can always print to file and convert to pdf in
many ways. That has never been the problem.

You don't understand.

I want a PDF viewer that can save the form data in one of the expected
formats: FDF, PDF, HTML, XML. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nope, I downloaded Beta1 64-bit DVD x86-64 just yesterday, it checks out
fine in the media check and I can boot from it without problem (had to
change the device order, though).

I can change the language to German and the installation is started in
German as well. The real show-stopper comes when I choose to update an
already installed Opensuse 10.2 x86-64 as base for the installation.

During the dependendy check of the installed rpms it shows 27 packages
that can not be updated. So far no problem. Unfortunately when I choose to
delete the not-updatable packages, the system freezes solid. Not on the
first package, but somewhere in the middle. Tried it twice now, once from
top of list and second time from bottom of list. Last package I choose to
delete was libgcj41-32bit. The only thing moving after that was the mouse
cursor.

It was just like working with Windows. (^-^)

Since no Installation on harddisk happened yet, I can't provide you with
any log. :-(

I am running 2.6.22.2 (in 10.2), and mc has no problems creating a
"Shell Link" - which is fish[1] - on both i586 and x86_64, to
'another' 2.6.22.2 machine (localhost).

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Files_transferred_over_shell_protocol

Hence I believe this is not a kernel bug. Especially since

>between fish in the kernel,

there is no in-kernel fish code. I do not think it's a socket
issue either, because that would render mc unusable too.

Run KDE/GNOME from a console, wonder about all those assertion failed
messages, and then look for pointers. I get

### CRASH ### protocol = fish pid = 12345 signal = 29.

29? SIGIO. ("Your Input Is Ready.") I do not have much joy going
deeper than this. But fish://127.0.0.1 works, so I suspect your
asynchronous DNS handling is borked. It is really hard to track
thanks to all the processes a simple konqueror in twm spawns.

Acroread is the only viewer included with suse Linux that displays and
allows editing of form fields. The rest just display the form, but do not
allow filling them. None will save the contents.

I heard of a product named "cabaret" that claims to be able to do it, and
it has a Linux version (for home use, I think).

that's not the intention. The intention is to open a PDF Form as in
Acroread, where you can only fill the fields the author left for filling,
and not being able to touch anything else. There is a special version of
acroread that allows saving the data: that's what I want, in Linux, and
free.

In fact, I just opened a test PDF in kword and the text flow was broken.
That would be unacceptable if I were to submit such a for to the
administration.

I just tried to open one of their official forms and it took two..three
minutes to open it. These things include calculations and possibly
javascript. When it finished opening it, the appearance is very far from
the correct one.

I see no cups-pdf in opensuse 10.2. Is it new in 10.3, perhaps? :-?

I have my ways to print to pdf, but that wasn't my exact question, anyway.

10.2 puts fonts in /usr/share/fonts.
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts is still supported for backwards-compatibility.

/usr/local/share/fonts obviously sounds like the logical counterpart to
/usr/share/fonts, just like /usr/local/bin is to /usr/bin. Nothing
special.

True.

It also means your report wasn't evaluated in time. If the people having
to read bugzilla had acted faster, the second report wouldn't have been
reported. Also, the second reporter should have read the already existing
reports and add to yours instead of opening a new one.

Both reports tells the same history in very similar words, so the

this case.

The report that got through was made by a Novell employee, and his was

It may all be very nice an correct, but it means a waste of time, and an
understandable disappointment for reporters.

But you are also at fault, as the same bug was reported earlier, by
another Novell employee, and marked duplicate too :-p

Three different reports before somebody took notice. M...

[opensuse] Fonts

2007-08-12 Thread Dave Barton
I have just changed (fresh install) my main production system from 10.1
to 10.2 (Big Mistake!!! but that's another issue).

In the process of restoring my original OpenOffice.org configurations I
noticed that many of the previously available fonts were not accessible,
even though I had reinstalled all of them on 10.2. When I searched for
the location of truetype fonts on the system, I found a hodge-podge of
various, sometimes duplicated, truetype fonts installed (not soft links)
in the following directories:
/usr/local/share/fonts
/usr/share/fonts/truetype
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype

The OpenOffice.org configuration is easy to fix, but does anyone know
why fonts are scattered around in this apparently disorganized fashion?

Windows may not have a lot going for it, but at least application
developers and users can be reasonably confident of finding all
installed fonts in one known location.

Ah, I see. I think I remember now reading about it. The man page could
then include a note by suse/novell explaining the removal. It does say
that the algorithms are patented, though.

There is another method, which is used by MS on NT partitions. A directory
can be marked compressed, and all files in there are compressed always (I
think). You can mark for compression only those directories that interests
you; for instance, I would mark backup mail folders.

The ext2 filesystem was designed to have compression of this sort some
time, but it has never been implemented. Pity. True, storage is cheaper
nowdays, but compression is even cheaper.

Installation program should have make active partition. or they don't do it
with development version ?!

It is simple with Konsole and Midnight Commander, if installed.
Anyway boot old system and add menu entry to /boot/grub/menu.list

If you partition is /dev/hda8 then:

title openSUSE 10.3 menu
  root (hd0,7)
  makeactive
  chainloader +1

Thanks everyone, for the help. I have 10.3 b1 up and running just fine
now, and it sounds fantastic. Before I made the switch, I copied my
/home directory to the spare disk, hda1, and was thus able to copy all
my Thunderbird settings and mail store, Firefox favorites, etc., all to
my new /home folder after all the dust settled. I even had no problem
compiling a new kernel with my NVIDIA 3-D module.

The only obvious remaining problem is that I need to boot from the DVD,
and select Boot from Hard Drive in order to get 10.3 started. If I
remove the DVD and boot from the hard drive, I get my old GRUB, and it
offers only 10.2 versions.

Is there a simple fix for this? I assume that the 10.3 installation
didn't put the boot loader in an expected location, but it sounds like
something that can be fixed. Starting it with the DVD in place is just
a little annoying, since I'd rather use that drive to listen to CDs.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry in Bothell, WA

It was also dangerous. I had one client that ran out of disk on Netware
and it became a nightmare to salvage data from the machine because
there was not enough room to decompress the very large files his business
tended to create.

Simply copying off files to another server became a one-by-one operation,
as the copy operation would cause decompression, and would exhaust all
available space if done en-mass. We would copy one file to the new server
and then had to delete the source file, and copy another. Rinse, repeat.

After about two hours of this, we finally got to where we could copy
entire small directories. Erase, erase, Copy another directory, etc.

Its a trap for the unwary.

This was a per file compression algorithm in NW4.x (they may have
changed it in 5/6 but I doubt it). The main problem with volume
compression is with capacity planning (is really 4G I have left or a
notional 4G)... Compression effects vary according to file contents and
I have seen on a couple of remarkable occasions 200:1 compression ratios
(SPSS data files which were mainly spaces).

With current drive capacities and costs it is no longer that critical
(compressed data transmission of course is a different matter).

As former Netware administrator you should also be aware of the problems
this caused with quota management. Compression was not immediate, only
when a file had not been accessed for a time, When a file was accessed
it was decompressed. Quotas tended to measured against disk space used
rather than uncompressed disk space. When used with something like the
Mercury mailer you could get the scenario where by reading their mail a
user would go over quota and all sorts of grief ensued. (Usually when
someone had been away for a while).

It was a great technology, but a bit problematic on a high demand setup.
You tend to have very few compressed files but the overheads of the
compression process being active. It was tuneable, but setting the
compression delay too low could generate a serious performance penalty.

For these reasons a lot of admins avoided using it.

By default GRUB will be installed in boot sector of partition where you
install new system, but it will be changed active flag too. This works this
way at least from 10.2.

So if you want your old menu, you have to change active partition back to old
one, as described in previous post. Than boot to that system and add manually
entry with chainloader that points to partition with new system.

This will give you your old menu first and when you select 10.3 it will pop up
new menu.

The way I do it will go direct in 10.3, but I can't see and test quality of
second menu. I guess that I'll add new menu item 10.3 via chainloader to old
boot, just to have that option too.

better tel it to install grub on the new root partition. so the grub
line to add later, in the old good grub that is know to work (old
install), is only a chainloader (+1) (clone the windows one if available).

in that way one can change at will the content of the trial partition

The main issue with this is that you do not have a permanent mount. This
is OK for browsing a folder but not a lot of use for working with its
contents. (BTW If you already have a cifs mount to the server/domain you
do not get a password query). Konqueror does have the option of adding a
share in the network browsing section, dunno how well it works as I have
never had any inclination to use it. The OP was asking for a CLI option.
