A couple of obvious, simple thoughts:
Have you logged onto the gmail web interface for your account and
checked your spam folder lately? A lot of opensuse email ends up there
for my account even though I try and train it otherwise :-/ Also, have
you double-checked your gmail settings in case pop has become

All my scripts started as other peoples ideas modified many times for my
own needs. This is the best I could do on short notice. Of course you
will have to put this under some directory on your user and make a alias
for rm in either dot profile or dot bashrc referring to this script.

So now you have your first script enjoy it in good health and have some
fun with it, on test data.

Likely someone here will provide you a reversal script for restoring
single files from .Trash to their original locations.

Hmm... That would be an interesting project to try to create. What a
way for me to flex my current knowledge and expand on it. :-)

It's no big deal. Write an rm replacement script that moves files to a
specified trash folder rather than simply unlink them. The only thing
you really have to worry about is name clashes. When that happens, add
a suffix (making sure that the suffix is unique, of course). With a bit
more work, you could additionally mimic the file system hierarchy
within the trash folder, but that doesn't get you out of handling
multiple deletes of the same name (since files often get recreated
 after they're deleted).

Here is an easy bash script one dates files the other takes a prefix.
change cp to mv and pick your target directory. With command pwd you
get the present working directory so if you later go to your trash
directory you can read where the file came from.

cat CopyWithDate.sh
#!/bin/sh
for i in `ls -A`; do
   cp -v $i /home/cwsiv/Documents/$(date +%F).$i;
done

cat CopyWithPrefix.sh
#!/bin/sh
echo Needs detection for empty string
if [$1=]; then
echo Provide a Prefix to be used

#   cp -v $i /home/cwsiv/Documents/$1.$i;

1400Mb swap, I launched X-Plane, Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey, VMWare
(running 10.2), and VirtualBox (running WinXP). RAM maxed out and
things started swapping with swap going from 1400Mb to 2200Mb - what I
would call expected normal behaviour. Exited all the applications,
and RAM was released, and some swap was released and it's now sitting
at 1572Mb. If I close down everything, log out and log back in, swap
usage doesn't move.. or if anything swap use increases slightly on
login.now it will never drop below 1572Mb swap until I reboot. I
expect that it'll top over 2000Mb in the next 24 hours... most of that
 while sitting idle.

Now the annoying thing about this prob is sometimes for no easily
discernible reason, during normal use (not the stress test I did
above) RAM will not be maxed out, and the system will start paging out
to swap... and swap use will go up.. and not be released. eventually
swap is maxed out, and the computer basically becomes unusable.
 Reboot fixes.

Well you did not mention SuSE 9.2 and Evolution so perhaps its one of
the services root loads when getting to run level 5. Try two things,
first crtl alt F1 and as root init 3 and let it run about ten minutes
then check top as suggested. If its still a problem do init 1 and top
as before. Also try this over night reboot to run level 1,3 and 5 on
separate nights and see where swap gets to by checking in C-A-F1

If either of these cures the problem its something root or the system
puts up.

Just how flexible is this thing? I would like to make the right side

 Hi Carl,

I seem to recall experiencing this problem in GNOME on 10.0. I eventually
discovered the problem was contention between the two installed and activated
by default screensavers: one GNOME, the other a generic x-screensaver.

I can't recall the label they used for the gnome 'control center' or 'desktop
settings' icon, but it should be located in the 'System' menu off your panel.
It's the one where you can open up gnome-sessions, adjust window behaviors,
 set your default fonts, etc.

Tried that it did not work. Does not even let me change from one minute
to four. Also no editing of schemeas in the gnome configuration editor.
So how do I turn these things on.

I backed up all the directories I thought could matter:

Evolution could not find the existing DOT evolution directory and my

I tried to restore .gconf/apps/evolution but that was not enough.

so I restored all of that and logged out and back in.
Now it works but the clicking of links goes no where.

If I do a simple test now it works (it deletes the file from the above PATH).
It seems to happen just when you have plenty of deleted data. I'm just

I do not have so much space to spare. I clean out in konsole as root.
You can do it manually and cause recursive deletes in .Trash but then
there are the directories with directories in them which being non

Use mc for this its easier.

systems, such as Linux or OS/2 cannot be infected when running, as they
have mechanisms to prevent it. DOS and DOS based versions of Windows
(3.1, 95, 98 etc) do not have such protection and can be infected
 whenever the virus is run.

MY PII was thus infected because I multi boot with Win311 for legacy
apps. Rewriting the MBR from SuSE8.2 at the time did not cure the
problem. It was a harmless variant of a known virus which I defeated
with Fprot and hard rebooting. At the time using FProt in the
recommended way found the virus in memory and therefore refused to clean
the infection. I beat this problem by telling FProt to ignore memory
and to do the clean then I immediately rebooted. I did this three times
then ran FProt in the usual way and no virus was found. From then on I
made Linux the default boot and load data from media therein.

To protect the anti virus software I kept it zipped in a location not in
the PATH and used a script to break out and run the program in a
directory I make up at that time. There is not much you can do with
such legacy systems but the exorcise in paranoia is healthy.

The list will have a public key which the subscribers will use to when

Your risk comes from outside agents who would seek to capture the
server. Herein lies the risk which requires the use of memory not hard
drive to store the lists public and private keys. If they reside in
volatile memory then they can not be captured. If your really smart the
host will reside headless in a confined space with a proximity alarm
which reboots the server if the server is disturbed thus destroying the
list keys.

Using this protocol you have one final risk; picking who can be trusted
to join the list since anyone once joining will still be able to read
all messages but no business or government will be able.

This is the basis of the Spitzer protocol. I have discussed it only a
few times. No one has implemented it as of yet, though it would be
ideal for use by both government and political activists. It has one
primary risk as do all systems the people using it; who must be trusted
to be mindful PKI and physical security of their systems.

In this age of post 911 diminished freedom in America and increased,
unlawful spying on civilians outside America we should all have copies

imaging. I can't seem to find any documentation for creating this same
kind of Master Image for SLED. I understand that Imaging will be less
of an issue with Linux due to the severely lowered privilege's regarding
installing software into the core operating system, but I still need to
be able to overcome any form of corruption quickly. I would also like to
distribute a dual boot system image for few years. How do automate the
local host name change for Zenworks importing and management?

With different hardware any image of the windows part of the drive will
be a problem. You will need safe mode and to fuss with drivers. For
SuSE its much easier boot to mode 3; run SaX2 -l; init 5; login as root
at which point the different hardware will be found click yes for the
reconfiguration and your fine. I installed 9.2 this way on a PIII and
moved the disk to the PII because the PIII had the DVD.

As I remember Zenworks like VMware is for running multiple OS in
parallel.

But first you want an image for SLED and to dual boot. There I think
its easier first start with your XP partition on what we will call the
primary system which would be on hda1 and I assume no file exchange
partition as users will have flash drives. Second partition the rest of
the drive as an extended partition into which you will use Yast/Custome
partitioning for the logical partitions for Linux.
I recommend using the standard four, /boot / swap and /home as hda5,
hda6, hda7 and hda8 respectively.

Now here its tricky DVD backup will fail over time due to media failure
so consider it temporary, harddrives can fail but overtime they have a
longer shelf life than the ten years commonly assumed for CDR and DVDR.
So backup your backup at least yearly and make incrementals if you make
small changes. You can also mirror the drive onto another drive say in
a USB inclosure. Yes you want to be paranoid.

Now for that master image of the dual booting drive you just created.

As long as the target device is the same or larger than the source you
can use device-device to copy /dev/hda to /dev/hdb thats not just one
partition but the whole drive byte by byte partitions and all. All that
is needed is the target to be on the network somewhere hdb here is only
an example as I have a system with two caddy because for a long time I
only had one burner so I used sneaker net to bring the drive to backup.

If however you want to do this on systems which are remote or just not
on the network then you can use mondo-rescue to make an install set for
all the programs on your system. If you want the Windows partition
included it must be mounted at the time you run mondo. Then you will
have an executable setup which boots and installs the disks.

Try windows on first than SuSE as I remember that's the only way to keep
grub happy and find all the drives which looks like windows cant though
the drive is not hidden.

Sorry I do not multiboot this box and have lost the old menu.1st from

Try which gnome-system-monitor to locate it and recreate the desktop or

use Kpackage and check test only do not install If the result is zero
your ok but your milage may vary. If none zero then stop there and do

How about an IBM 407a -- whopping 90 card per minute read rate. The
program was a 14 by 24 board made of bakelight
like a car spark plug distributor -- with holes like a peg board --
which held snap pluged wires that combined 1/2 adders and
 controlled multiple accumulator registers

An old timer told me about those things and the roaches which used to
eat the wires causing shorts, hence the term debugging.

I can only conclude there is a hidden setting for no mail and it has

[opensuse] 2.4 vs 2.6 kernal speed issue

2007-04-04 Thread Carl Spitzer
2.6 Kernal is slower and more memory required.

Why is this?

Its for an embedded OS application for high definition display.

Is anyone working on this issue specifically.
