[opensuse] upgraded to V10 finally

2005-10-16 Thread Winston Graeme
I have finally managed to get my hands on V10 .. the
evaluation DVD.

Lots of great software as allways.

But must say I was disappointed.

Someone on the list said that they had severe problems
getting the system to run for the first time since V8
.. .

Well kinda similiar experience a bit.

Been uising SuSE since 8.1 .

I bought retail V 8.1,8.2,9.0 9.3 .

All them installed booted usually fine.
Some have been more unstable than others ((8.1
9.1(the first 2.6 version .. right?)come to my mind) .

8.2 9.3 have prob in my opinion been the best of the
ones I know.

My lovely Wacom tablet wasnt recognized for the v10
install (no prob in 9.3 or 9.2) .

When the system booted for the first time ... it very
much stopped after finishing the boot-runlevel
changing into runlevel 5.

I had the tablet (USB) USB wireless adaptor plugged
in.
It took it something like several hours to get from
end of boot-level to starting HAL after that I
lost my nerves ... reset ... take out the USB bits
.. it booted fine (there now are all these
configuration things being shown on 1st boot .. might
have been there akready in 9.3 ... reminded me of
installing Ubuntu :-) .

Once I got my tablet running it behaved very similiar
to new Vector versions ... I guess there have been
kernel changes recently .. movement of the pen above
the tablet is not noticed .. only when the pen
actually touches the tablet surface ... additionally
to that the mouse jumps not relativly the same
distance as the pen does when I put it at a different
corner of the tablet (its okay if I lost ye in my
crappy description 8-) ) . So its quite unusable
highly irritating.

Yet have to explore the rest.

Xept for the above things there seem to have been nice
improvments everywhere :-)

This realease seems a bit rushed I have the feeling as
Ive never had problems with the first boot until V10.

Sorry 4 all this moaning but just sharing my
experience .

So the issue is still around still hasnt been solved
.. ha - what a surprise.

But I agree with below opinion .. one big forum is
better than many small ones where questions answers
rescources are scattered all over the web ...

e.g. linuxquestions.org wouldnt be as great (my
opinion) if each forum had its own website .. there
wouldnt be any communication coordination between
things.

Fact is a wiki is not a mailinglist is not a forum.

There are reasons for each to xist ... but of course
we have to try to not duplicate efforts in order to
make it as painless as possible ... blah blah blah ..

Re: [opensuse] Hi all

2005-10-05 Thread Winston Graeme
Interesting idea but Windows is not Linux .. but then this could also work .

People know Windows know people to help them if they have problems .. Windows
is fast .. reliable (XP with firewall is absolutly fine).. is supported so why
switch .. if it aint broke why try to fix it .. by going into an unknown
complicated (yes its not complicated .. but I wont go through all these things
... this will not be a flaming war) terretory.

So at the moment .. people switch to Linux when they are really sick of
Windows... they need to .. are in contact with Linux cause of work there know
it CAN (can not does ... driver probs et cetera) work ... are very curious ...
are server .. geeks .. have a business interest in it ... have a Linux system
which is properly supported (as in propiatry proper support where the end-user
does not have to be a geek or computer nut(not trying to offend anyone)) .

But for the Joe - Jimmy - Hans - or whateva average user it doesnt yet make
enough sense to switch .

With more more businesses switching their staff to Linux .. driver-providers
might just properly start supporting Linux as well (hopefully the current Linux
infrastructure is making this as simple as possible to do) making it easier for
X - average to switch.

Hiding system/admin entyys in menus is a desktop environment thing ... I think
GNOME has something coming along that line .. but hiding inappropiare or
inaccesible items should be done as much as possible oviously as long as it
makes sense.

Linux is an open-source product .. programs change all the time ... which is
not the case with Windows.

On a Linux desktop the 3rd party or whateva its called software ... such as
Real-Player a Photoshop install etc ... is very limited making it easier for
Distros to constantly come up with new versions ... nobody needs to figure out
strange hacks to allow some strange program to still run when the OS is updated
(okay not completly true .. my knowledge is quite limited ) ..
with Redhat Server or SLES the big products are certified for these OSes ...
cause they guarantee a certain standard etc. over a certain time.

Fact is open-source doesnt stop changing developing according to set dates
deadlines ... its a million times easier in that way for Microsoft ... but they
on the other hand must manage to get all the designed for XP progs to work ...
there will allways be a new version of XYZ - program in the open-source
community.

I dont think the answer neccessarily can be components ... actually the KLICK
thing could if everybody stands behind that be very very powerful influencial
... as far as I get it ... each package (just like OSX) is completly in its own
world has very few (hopefully) dependencies can also then in itself be very
optimised ... click run infrastructure (might add more overhead than
neccessary ?) for all the big GUI progs the distro specific stuff would then
be the base system system utilities ... I quite like the idea ... very
similiar then to Windows where there is the base system everything els eis
extra .

3rd parties could then just provide such packages to the end-user .
A lot of the sytem could be like building blocks which could be combined to
give different configurations (server .. desktop .. workstationetc) ...
Flexible predictable hopefully.

Actually I just reread what U wrote .. yeah Im suggesting very much the same I
think ... there would have to be someone or something which would control the
Slick Run infrastructure.

Like the kernel development but in this case for the desktop:-) .

Full-Stop I ve written too much .

Thanx for reading if ye made it this far .

Damn Small Linux goes on 50 MB. OK, they don't have
 KDE.

Do you have a list of what is now on the CD, without
 needing to download
the CD? I think ARCHIVES.gz does tell that.

Re: [opensuse] Download issues for upcoming beta4

2005-09-01 Thread Winston Graeme
Yeah ... the question is :
Is a bittorrent only realease at first still
considered an on schedule realease then fully
synced servers can serve the iso's later.

Is it rude to say that people have to use BT for the
first day or two ?

 Hi List,

wouldn't it maybe help to at first only release the
 isos via bittorrent and
add the ftp servers a few days later?

That way all the I need the new version NOW people
 wouldn't rush the ftp
servers, bittorrent would serv up faster (those
 people usually have hight
bandwiths) and those people that have a bit more
 patience can download
conveniently from the ftp servers at a later point.

The mirrors would have a bit more time to sync and
 especially gwdg wouldn't
suffer so much from the first onslaught...

 Just an Idea,

 Alexander

Absolutly right.

Let's grow up a bit care less about top or bottom -
posting or such.

Reg.: SuSE-Tour

I dont think enhancing or changing the info during
install is so important.

Users cant go back to that look at some advice given
again .. well xcept if they reinstall.

And people might be tempted to do something more
useful than stare at the installation.

And BTW during my 9.3 (purchased) installation this
slide-presentation didn't work at all ... it allways
showed the same picture.

And we have far greater possibilities if it is
something on a running system - like internet
links,video et c.

So I dont see the install-show as an option.

Simply enhancing the Current-Intro tour there is when
booting up the system for the first time seems more
like it.

And the person installing the system might not be the
person using the system.
