On http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version only the RC1 is mentioned.
To make sure, I had a look at ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/, and
there is only an openSUSE-10.2-RC1 directory, no RC2..4 anywhere.

Are you perhaps confusing the Beta 4 with the release candidate?

No, I'm pretty sure that, at least, RC2 has been tested by the openSUSE

The factory tree is synced out regularly and should be now at RC4

So, for radio and tv I still have no sound but I can play a music CD.

I installed my 10.2 in steps, first text mode minimal, then
X, then Gnome.

I endend up with a version starting fvwm2 by default, not
gnome (startx launch fvwm2, I need to run gdm or gnome
to have it)

we could probably suppose than when somebody install gnome
he wants it to run (same for kde)?

if not a message should be sent summarizing the process to
make gnome the default (it's not so simple, even with yast)

[opensuse-factory] Bug 223794

2006-12-01 Thread Andras Mantia
Hi,

I'm stressing this here as time is approaching quickly for GM, and I
would like to have a 10.2 where my application[1] doesn't crash. ;-)

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223794

It has a patch attached - suggested by the imagemagick developers - ,
but wasn't even commented by a suse guy yet. :-(

Please review and if possible, include it.

Andras

[1] http://kallery.kdewebdev.org, but basically every Qt3 application
using ImageMagick will crash if tries to draw something to the images.

From your numbers it is pretty clear that there are some straightforward
optimization ways:
- use bzip2 for repodata: downloading 2 MB of extra data is still slower
than uncompressing a file with bzip2 compared to gzip
- use compression for yast repositories
- suggest using yast repositories for SUSE packages

I know this is not that easy to do for repo-md, if other distributions
should agree with it as well, but for yast repositories it is something
that should be considered right from the start for 10.3.

About XML parsing performance, here are some numbers (AMD64, 3200+):
- parsing a 17MB (!) HTML file in Quanta Plus is 19seconds. Own parser,
but I'm sure it is more complex and does much more things than an XML
parser needed for YaST.
- reading 2MB of XML file from several hunderds of files using Qt's DOM
functions takes 328ms. So let's say 16MB would take 2 seconds. I did
not messure this in YaST, but if it's slower, there is a big problem as
Qt's DOM implementation is not considered to be fast. ;-)

[opensuse-factory] can someone test VCD playing?

Hi,

I reported a bug I found about playing VCD's:

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221144

I am not able to play a VCD here. The same hardware had no problem with 10.1

There was no activity on this bug yet, probably because I did not make it
critical.

Before I go and change the severity I would like to ask you to test this if
you have a VCD at hand.

Thanks

No, I'm pretty sure that, at least, RC2 has been tested by the openSUSE
community. Some of e-mails here on the mailing-list have RC2 in their
 subject.

There is no such thing in the torrents. Maybe in the factory tree, once
the RC is installed.

So... I was right. There is no network or rcnetwork init script in
  the install system.

Ah, I see, I had overlooked that this was in inst-sys, sorry for that.
Misunderstanding: I thought you were mentioning adding extra-sources
after your network is configured and tested.

Anyway, if you boot from CD or DVD you should not get any
network-related option in New Add-On Configuration dialog (or how is
it called) such as SLP, HTTP, FTP etc.

It certainly proposes an URL (and local directories etc). If there is no
support for URLs, ie, external sources, then it should be removed from the
option list.

Notice that I'm testing this procedure on purpose, because I was told
here that it should work. I have created a new 10.1 partition with the
idea in mind of testing this thing.

But it seems it was not true that the procedure was ready. Very
dissapointing, I have been waiting months to test this. :-(

But if you still want to have network configured during the first-stage
installation (int-sys), use a Linuxrc parameter

 DHCP=1

at the boot-screen menu ... or you can set a static address using

 HostIP=192.168.1.100 Netmask=255.255.255.0 Gateway=192.168.1.1
 Nameserver=192.168.1.2 DHCP=0 UseDHCP=0 Domain=your.domain

The eth0 interface is down at that stage, not even an IP will work -
unless those entries above makes it initialize the network first.

Of course :) with your own settings...

Of course - but they are almost correct, as a matter of fact :-)

You can consult these (or other) Linuxrc parameters with this document:
 http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc

Nice. But most of the parameters there are undocumented, like the one
labeled network.

 Have a nice day
 Lukas

The idea was talked about here last October:

http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00355.html
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00334.html

It consists on having two sources during the install/upgrade, one the DVD,
another a remote site FTP/HTTP. The purpose is to be able to
install/upgrade those packages that are not in the main install media.

An installed system usually has packages that are not included on the DVD,
but were installed by Yast from ftp servers. When upgrading the system
from one version to the next, using the small dvd (compared with the
double layer comercial dvd) those packages that are not in the media are
simply removed. The idea is to get those missing packages from the
network. I had asked if that feature was intended, and Andreas Hanke told
me it was already there, by means of the add on media option. Andreas
Jaeger seemed to confirm it.

Now it is obvious that this does not work. It is impossible, as network
has not been initialised at that stage. :-/

I understand that Lukas Ocilka says that it has been solved in RC4, but I
see no RC4 DVD in the torrents, so it is untestable. Maybe Novell
employees have access to the RC4 DVD and can test the feature, but I
can't.

Even if the torrent were made available, there would be no time to

Let's have a look at some numbers ;)

 On my repository for 10.1:

  rpm-md | 1454322 | 1.37 | primary.xml.gz, filelists.xml.gz

yast2 repositories make up a somewhat larger download (21%), actually.

The yast2 metadata are not compressed.

If you compress the yast2 metadata or uncompress the repomd XML files,
you will see a significant difference.

Not to mention that e.g. /var/lib/locatedb, compressed with gzip, is
just 700 KB here - holding filelist information about a whole lot more
of stuff.

Is it really necessary to repeat the full path of every single file in
the metadata and not just the difference to some sort of base path?

Does the depsolver really need the full filelists? It doesn't even use
them most of the time:

- Seaching for files inside packages doesn't work with repomd although
the information is available in the metadata

- Detecting filesystem clashes doesn't work with repomd although the
information is available in the metadata

So I can only conclude that the information is most of the time not even
used.

[opensuse-factory] 10.2: OK, but some Bugs

2006-12-01 Thread Oliver Tennert
Hello together,

I have installed 10.2 RC1 on my system and the first I have to say: after
10.1, installing 10.2 is really a relief for an admin's nerves. Nearly
everything has been running smoothly, apart from the usual problem that after
the GRUB update, GRUB does not boot anymore, and I have to manually
cp /usr/lib/grub/*stage* /boot/grub ; grub --batch /etc/grub.conf. Thanks
for that.

But still some things need to be fixed:

1.) OK, it would be nice if someone could acklowledge if there really is a
GRUB update bug (see above) since God knows when, or if I am doing something
wrong.

2.) xfsprogs really should be updated to 2.8.16, because there are severe bugs
2.8.11: some errors are not corrected by xfsrepair 2.8.11, so there are
latent inconsistencies, which e.g. strike at you when you perform an xfsdump

3.) as I pointed out in an earlier mail wrt SUSE 10.1, rpc.idmapd should start
AFTER nfsserver starts. Still this has not been corrected. Furthermore, there
is a loop in the startup file headers: the nfsserver script has a should
start: idmapd line, and the idmapd script has s sould start: nfsserver
line. The former dependency should be removed.

Best regards

Oliver

[opensuse-factory] Can't not install OpenOffice or Beagle

2006-12-01 Thread Felix Miata
I installed from ftp mirror 3 times in past 2 days. Twice I tried to
speed up the install by deselecting OpenOffice.org. The first time I
tried that I searched for OpenOffice.org and deselected that and the
other 3-4 selected that contained OpenOffice. After that failed, the
next time I searched for office, and deselected every package that
contained that word. That too resulted in OpenOffice.org being installed
(7 packages total with OpenOffice_org in their names). How does one not
install OpenOffice.org?

Same with beagle. I searched for beagle and deselected everything
containg that word, but still I have beagle and libbeagle installed.

much time to test, so I've made my first installation with Beta2 and
start then, rebuilding my Packman packages. All bugs I've found where
allready reported in bugzilla and as far as I can see, are fixed in

Special thanks for

- make it possible to uninstall mono and depending packages completely

It has a patch attached - suggested by the imagemagick developers -
, but wasn't even commented by a suse guy yet. :-(

Please review and if possible, include it.

If it's not affecting a program from the default installation, it
will hardly be fixed before 10.2 GM taking that Vladmir is also
maintainer of several packages that _do_ affect programs from the
default installations (like all CD burning apps).

A quick check in YaST shows that ImageMagick is used by the following
KDE applications from the DVD:
- kipi-plugins
- kismet
- koffice-illustration

I think the most interesting would be to check the kipi-plugins if they
are using DrawImage or something similar. The README file from
extargear/libs/kipi-plugins says it is just a runtime dependency and
uses only the ImageMagick binaries, but the package dependency is for
the libraries, so I don't know what's the truth. ;-) I also didn't test
them.

And 10.2 is basically done and it's not likely we'll see checkins of
non-leaf packages that do not fix distribution critical issues. Just
 so you know

I think if there is no other solution, an update after release is also
acceptable.

Just thinking aloud, I wonder if going into VC and configuring the network
manually or by dhcp would be a way around.

No, it is much worse than that: the eth0 interface is not up, ifconfig
only lists lo. Not because there is a problem with the network, but
because the install hasn't even tried to activate it at that point.

What is VC, anyway? A console?

 Thanks to not using XML.
Yeah, I saw this too and thought about at least using some kind of
 directory prefix or similar handling.

XML really makes it easy to be stupid in data design :/

What about md5sum-ming the filelist, and use the md5sum as key? If a new
version of a package is released with the same filelist only the md5sum needs
to be transferred. For big packages the compression might be around 100% ;)

Already done.

For yast2 repositories, package managers look at the serial number in
media.1/media (the 2nd line), so only the media.1/media file is
downloaded (very small, just a few bytes (22 bytes in my repository)).
I use a timestamp for that.

For rpm-md repositories, package managers look at the
repodata/repomd.xml file.
It has SHA checksums and timestamps of the other files (filelists.xml.gz
and primary.xml.gz), e.g.:
- ---8
?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
repomd xmlns=http://linux.duke.edu/metadata/repo;
  data type=filelists
location href=repodata/filelists.xml.gz/
checksum type=sha.../checksum
timestamp1165003298/timestamp
open-checksum type=sha.../open-checksum
  /data
  data type=primary
location href=repodata/primary.xml.gz/
checksum type=sha.../checksum
timestamp1165003298/timestamp
open-checksum type=sha.../open-checksum
  /data
/repomd
- ---8

That file is somewhat larger as for yast2 repositories, but still very
small (951 bytes in my repository).

yast2 and smart look at the serial numbers/timestamps of those files and
compare it with the repository metadata they downloaded the last time.
They will download the full metadata if and only if the remote
serial/timestamp differs.

cheers

No, that's not what was asked for.

Just as an example for repomd:

You have a repository with package A-1 and B-1. createrepo writes the
filelists of both packages into filelists.xml.

Now A gets upgraded to A-1.1. Which is a great thing, because the
package manager has to download the whole filelists.xml again, even
though package B has not been touched at all.

What you describe covers only the fact that the metadata aren't
downloaded again if nothing changed. But if even the slightest thing
changed, everything is downloaded from scratch, even the parts that have
not been changed.

Solutions:

- Use a smarter protocol that can fix this design problem, e.g. rsync
instead of http/ftp.

- Think about a smarter metadata format. SUSE had one (the old
plain-text patchinfos) and threw it away in favour of repomd.

- Extend the repomd format to suck less, e.g. by splitting filelists.xml
into filelists-dec06.xml, filelists-jan07.xml, filelists-feb07.xml so
that at least the unchanged filelists from previous months aren't
downloaded over and over again.

[opensuse-factory] wine and picasa

2006-12-01 Thread Elliott Martin
I wanted to ask if anyone could take a look at running Google's picasa under
wine for me.

The latest windows version used to run fine under 10.1, same with google's rpm
of the linux version, but now under 10.2 RC1 neither work and I'm not sure if
it's just here, or if everyone has this problem.

Thanks.

Your X server crashes (most likely the screensaver is the first OpenGL app you
tried). You want to check /var/log/messages/ for various logs

It crashed in a couple of other places as well - eg, trying to run
glxgears crashed it - so what I did was recompile the nVidia driver and
this fixed it. Weird. But that's computers :-) .

It might be because of default ulimits we have.

I reloaded the install kernel with the same results.

Why do you think it is running Linux ? Have you tested it ?

It's certainly possible--even likely.

LinkSys has (or had) at least one Linux-based home networking firewall /
router. There are also complete open source replacements for that
router's firmware, but as I understand it, only the older versions of
that router with more RAM can run it. It has some features not found in
the stock LinkSys routers.

Here's the first story I found relating to this router and its firmware:

The timeline seemed to suggest that GM was due,30th. Nov. with Public

Wording is definitely a problem. GM was done (on the 1st) and it will
