So maybe it's just muted In kmix (which is what I use) for 10.1 there are green buttons which indicate if a channel is muted/unmuted. These button are missing in 10.2 RC1 so there is no way of knowing - or even altering the state - if a channel is muted or not. So, for radio and tv I still have no sound but I can play a music CD. About XML parsing performance, here are some numbers (AMD64, 3200+): - parsing a 17MB (!) HTML file in Quanta Plus is 19seconds. Own parser, but I'm sure it is more complex and does much more things than an XML parser needed for YaST. - reading 2MB of XML file from several hunderds of files using Qt's DOM functions takes 328ms. So let's say 16MB would take 2 seconds. I did not messure this in YaST, but if it's slower, there is a big problem as Qt's DOM implementation is not considered to be fast. ;-) Andras -- Quanta Plus developer - http://quanta.kdewebdev.org K Desktop Environment - http://www.kde.org pgpWb3Xb9KXkv.pgp Description: PGP signature

Maybe in the factory tree, once the RC is installed. So... I was right. There is no network or rcnetwork init script in the install system. Ah, I see, I had overlooked that this was in inst-sys, sorry for that. Misunderstanding: I thought you were mentioning adding extra-sources after your network is configured and tested. Anyway, if you boot from CD or DVD you should not get any network-related option in New Add-On Configuration dialog (or how is it called) such as SLP, HTTP, FTP etc. It certainly proposes an URL (and local directories etc). If there is no support for URLs, ie, external sources, then it should be removed from the option list. Notice that I'm testing this procedure on purpose, because I was told here that it should work. I have created a new 10.1 partition with the idea in mind of testing this thing. But it seems it was not true that the procedure was ready. Very dissapointing, I have been waiting months to test this. :-( But if you still want to have network configured during the first-stage installation (int-sys), use a Linuxrc parameter DHCP=1 at the boot-screen menu ... or you can set a static address using HostIP=192.168.1.100 Netmask=255.255.255.0 Gateway=192.168.1.1 Nameserver=192.168.1.2 DHCP=0 UseDHCP=0 Domain=your.domain The eth0 interface is down at that stage, not even an IP will work - unless those entries above makes it initialize the network first. Of course :) with your own settings... Of course - but they are almost correct, as a matter of fact :-) You can consult these (or other) Linuxrc parameters with this document: http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc Nice. The yast2 metadata are not compressed. If you compress the yast2 metadata or uncompress the repomd XML files, you will see a significant difference. Not to mention that e.g. /var/lib/locatedb, compressed with gzip, is just 700 KB here - holding filelist information about a whole lot more of stuff. Is it really necessary to repeat the full path of every single file in the metadata and not just the difference to some sort of base path? Does the depsolver really need the full filelists? It doesn't even use them most of the time: - Seaching for files inside packages doesn't work with repomd although the information is available in the metadata - Detecting filesystem clashes doesn't work with repomd although the information is available in the metadata So I can only conclude that the information is most of the time not even used. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[opensuse-factory] 10.2: OK, but some Bugs
Hello together, I have installed 10.2 RC1 on my system and the first I have to say: after 10.1, installing 10.2 is really a relief for an admin's nerves. Nearly everything has been running smoothly, apart from the usual problem that after the GRUB update, GRUB does not boot anymore, and I have to manually cp /usr/lib/grub/*stage* /boot/grub ; grub --batch /etc/grub.conf. Thanks for that. But still some things need to be fixed: 1.) OK, it would be nice if someone could acklowledge if there really is a GRUB update bug (see above) since God knows when, or if I am doing something wrong. 2.) xfsprogs really should be updated to 2.8.16, because there are severe bugs 2.8.11: some errors are not corrected by xfsrepair 2.8.11, so there are latent inconsistencies, which e.g. strike at you when you perform an xfsdump 3.) as I pointed out in an earlier mail wrt SUSE 10.1, rpc.idmapd should start AFTER nfsserver starts. Still this has not been corrected. Furthermore, there is a loop in the startup file headers: the nfsserver script has a should start: idmapd line, and the idmapd script has s sould start: nfsserver line. The former dependency should be removed. [opensuse-factory] Can't not install OpenOffice or Beagle
I installed from ftp mirror 3 times in past 2 days. Twice I tried to speed up the install by deselecting OpenOffice.org. The first time I tried that I searched for OpenOffice.org and deselected that and the other 3-4 selected that contained OpenOffice. After that failed, the next time I searched for office, and deselected every package that contained that word. That too resulted in OpenOffice.org being installed (7 packages total with OpenOffice_org in their names). How does one not install OpenOffice.org? Same with beagle. A quick check in YaST shows that ImageMagick is used by the following KDE applications from the DVD: - kipi-plugins - kismet - koffice-illustration I think the most interesting would be to check the kipi-plugins if they are using DrawImage or something similar. The README file from extargear/libs/kipi-plugins says it is just a runtime dependency and uses only the ImageMagick binaries, but the package dependency is for the libraries, so I don't know what's the truth. ;-) I also didn't test them. And 10.2 is basically done and it's not likely we'll see checkins of non-leaf packages that do not fix distribution critical issues. If a new version of a package is released with the same filelist only the md5sum needs to be transferred. For big packages the compression might be around 100% ;) Already done. For yast2 repositories, package managers look at the serial number in media.1/media (the 2nd line), so only the media.1/media file is downloaded (very small, just a few bytes (22 bytes in my repository)). I use a timestamp for that. For rpm-md repositories, package managers look at the repodata/repomd.xml file. It has SHA checksums and timestamps of the other files (filelists.xml.gz and primary.xml.gz), e.g.: - ---8 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8? repomd xmlns=http://linux.duke.edu/metadata/repo; data type=filelists location href=repodata/filelists.xml.gz/ checksum type=sha.../checksum timestamp1165003298/timestamp open-checksum type=sha.../open-checksum /data data type=primary location href=repodata/primary.xml.gz/ checksum type=sha.../checksum timestamp1165003298/timestamp open-checksum type=sha.../open-checksum /data /repomd - ---8 That file is somewhat larger as for yast2 repositories, but still very small (951 bytes in my repository). yast2 and smart look at the serial numbers/timestamps of those files and compare it with the repository metadata they downloaded the last time. For big packages the compression might be around 100% ;) Already done. No, that's not what was asked for. Just as an example for repomd: You have a repository with package A-1 and B-1. createrepo writes the filelists of both packages into filelists.xml. Now A gets upgraded to A-1.1. Which is a great thing, because the package manager has to download the whole filelists.xml again, even though package B has not been touched at all. What you describe covers only the fact that the metadata aren't downloaded again if nothing changed. But if even the slightest thing changed, everything is downloaded from scratch, even the parts that have not been changed. Solutions: - Use a smarter protocol that can fix this design problem, e.g. rsync instead of http/ftp. - Think about a smarter metadata format. SUSE had one (the old plain-text patchinfos) and threw it away in favour of repomd. - Extend the repomd format to suck less, e.g. by splitting filelists.xml into filelists-dec06.xml, filelists-jan07.xml, filelists-feb07.xml so that at least the unchanged filelists from previous months aren't downloaded over and over again. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
