Very nice--I did not know this technique. I just gave Emacs artist-mode
a try.

Thanks :)

This dialog has been designed to ease the installation for common users.
In my opinion, many users want to only install the base system with
"some" patterns and then install additional software later.

If you select the "base" or "minimal" system type, then the checkbox
does something, e.g., selects or doesn't select the OpenOffice and friends.

Actually, the software selection is pattern-based and the pattern is
called "office". Of course, the label has been selected to attract your
attention to get some reports and opinions from the community.

There is a bug/old behavior in software proposal that doesn't expect
anyone else to select a pattern/package/etc. to be installed/upgraded...

Have a nice day

This was just a bug.

I renamed that to "Server" actually - and "Minimal X" to XFCE :)

We discussed this on friday and we're working on some other feature to speed
up the installation, that would be very complicated with these checkboxes,
so we'll have to limit the number of default choices - the individual software
selection will stay though.

What about simply "Open and modify documents"?

That said: The dialog looks really good, and the sort order in the "Type
of System" chooser also looks good. (Well, KDE could be on the first
position *SCNR*)

This begins to look realy free and original, imo.

Looks less scary for a noob i guess also... ;-)
And, i like the sentence with mother...

[OT]
I luckily also still have one,..a mother, she is 90, and until her
stroke, 6 years ago, she used a PC and played games, e-mailed and
browsed the internetand rewrote her lifestory from Amiga,..(she
started to write the 4 bit games like snake, in the early days...for the
tape streaming commodore, before Amiga 600, and 1200...)
Now she can shut off the TV and the DVD-Player, but nothing else,
helas...but she is still anice person to have around..

I actually like the look of the new "System Type and Software Selection"
screen[0] with the different types in the single list. What would be
nice is for the package selection to honour choices made on this screen.
E.g. someone leaving "Play games" unchecked is likely to expect there to
be no games, the same with multimedia and graphics. Leaving these
unchecked shouldn't install packages within those groups, unless they
are required by other packages. It would also be nice if not enabling
the "Open and modify documents from my mother" would remove the Office
patterns.

At present, the new usage boxes don't appear to actually do anything. Or
deselecting them doesn't at the moment. I guess that there's going to
have to be some changes to the patterns again to make them actually do
what the descriptive text says.

You've either missed out the "Minimal X" or the "Text Mode" selection
from that list.

>I'm just not sure yet about the order :)

I think the way the pop-up was laid out was quite good. The ordering
with the full featured GUI desktops first, then the minimal X, a text
only system, and finally the bare minimum.

I'm seriously worried that all the reviews did not mention it actually - which
makes me believe most only looked at screenshots :)

It's not _exactly_ a joke. We wanted to redo the "KDE or GNOME" dialog into
doing more, so I challenged the team and they came up with

[ ] Office
[ ] Multimedia
[ ] Internet

And I said: what is Office? Is that software I need if I work in an office
(e.g. patience game) or can I use it at home too? Do I need to check this box
too, if all I want is to open document sent by my mother (and I'm afraid _my_

I didn't get a reply till I looked at the dialog you're seeing. So here we

Actually what I want in that dialog is

[ ] Minimal Installation (the bare minimum)
[ ] Server Installation (no desktop)
[ ] XFCE Desktop (only necessary applications)
[ ] GNOME Desktop (with Browser, Office programs)
[ ] KDE Desktop (with Browser, Office programs)

I'm just not sure yet about the order :)

[opensuse-factory] Alpha1 installer / step Software selection

2008-01-23 Thread Dominique Leuenberger
Hello,

Haven't seen it discussed yet on the list, and I just try to install my first
Alpha1 (after having it on the other computer upgraded to Factory since 10.2).

In the Software selection Dialog, I hope the selection: 'Open and modify
documents from my mother' is meant as a joke for an alpha installer, right?

Why:
- It does not say anything of what it actually means (probably OpenOffice and
the like).
- If it's a young kid that wants to read the files of his mum, he most likely
anyhow is the one that helps his mum, and the one with more knowledge.
- If MUM is installing it, she will more likely worry to open files of her
kids; at a certain age, mums just are no longer.

I feel this sentence a little bit insulting during an installation.

What are other people's opinion about this?

Dominique
