Thanks :) This dialog has been designed to ease the installation for common users. In my opinion, many users want to only install the base system with "some" patterns and then install additional software later. If you select the "base" or "minimal" system type, then the checkbox does something, e.g., selects or doesn't select the OpenOffice and friends. Actually, the software selection is pattern-based and the pattern is called "office". Of course, the label has been selected to attract your attention to get some reports and opinions from the community. > At present, the new usage boxes don't appear to actually do anything. There is a bug/old behavior in software proposal that doesn't expect anyone else to select a pattern/package/etc. to be installed/upgraded... That said: The dialog looks really good, and the sort order in the "Type of System" chooser also looks good. What would be nice is for the package selection to honour choices made on this screen. E.g. someone leaving "Play games" unchecked is likely to expect there to be no games, the same with multimedia and graphics. Leaving these unchecked shouldn't install packages within those groups, unless they are required by other packages. It would also be nice if not enabling the "Open and modify documents from my mother" would remove the Office patterns. At present, the new usage boxes don't appear to actually do anything. Or deselecting them doesn't at the moment. I guess that there's going to have to be some changes to the patterns again to make them actually do what the descriptive text says. >Actually what I want in that dialog is > > [ ] Minimal Installation (the bare minimum) > [ ] Server Installation (no desktop) > [ ] XFCE Desktop (only necessary applications) > [ ] GNOME Desktop (with Browser, Office programs) > [ ] KDE Desktop (with Browser, Office programs) You've either missed out the "Minimal X" or the "Text Mode" selection from that list. >I'm just not sure yet about the order :) I think the way the pop-up was laid out was quite good. [opensuse-factory] Alpha1 installer / step Software selection
Hello, Haven't seen it discussed yet on the list, and I just try to install my first Alpha1 (after having it on the other computer upgraded to Factory since 10.2). In the Software selection Dialog, I hope the selection: 'Open and modify documents from my mother' is meant as a joke for an alpha installer, right? Why: - It does not say anything of what it actually means (probably OpenOffice and the like). - If it's a young kid that wants to read the files of his mum, he most likely anyhow is the one that helps his mum, and the one with more knowledge. - If MUM is installing it, she will more likely worry to open files of her kids; at a certain age, mums just are no longer. I feel this sentence a little bit insulting during an installation. What are other people's opinion about this?
