Re: RE: Has anyone heard of "Mirror Accessible"?

2001-12-06 Thread Don Granaman

Is Las Vegas laying odds on this? I've got a few bucks I would wager
against...

This is not just unreasonable, but insane - even assuming that
everything goes perfectly (it won't). It is more reasonable to assume
that a horse is a perfect sphere or that the Israeli-Palestinian
problem could be solved once and for all with a coin toss. Keep the
Uzi around for a while after the upgrades. You may need it for
self-defense when these same damagers come scapegoat hunting.

Don't underestimate the benefit of the "remotely" part. At least they
won't hear you swearing at them and you won't have several of them in
your cube at all times - looking over your shoulder, asking intensely
stupid questions, and constantly talking on their cell phones relaying
status reports! Also, if you have to make a break for it, you'll have
a decent lead.

Only a few years ago, I thought that Dilbert was comic exaggeration.
I have since come to the profound realization that it is subtle
understatement.

Re: V7 online backups

2001-12-06 Thread Don Granaman

How about EBU? It is actually fairly good in 7.3.4+ and is very
straightforward to set up. Like RMAN, It uses a database catalog, but
the command syntax is radically different - in my opinion, much more
straightforward. It also include a shell command line utility named
ebutool that is quite useful. I used it for years on many systems
without significant problems.

What hardware (e.g. DLT IV, etc.) and software (e.g. Veritas
NetBackup) resources do you already have? Will the entire backup fit
on one tape? If so, I have a set of ksh & SQL scripts that do
extensive error checking and get the file list dynamically from
v$datafile - so no "new" datafiles are overlooked. They also do
archive log cleanup, can verify the backup by reading it off of the
tape, and some other stuff. These scripts may or may not be
appropriate for your case.

Apache and Oracle config help

2001-12-06 Thread Don

If somebody could lend assistance, here or offline, I would appreciate it.

The prob: Oracle SSP5 iprocurement installed on 8.0.5 DB with Oracle Apps
11.0.3. has problems dealing with the 6th session that trys to do a search
in iP. The 6th session will cause ALL connected browser sessions to get a
"server not found" error screen.

I found that if we recuded the -mx500m in the jserv.properties file down to
about 50, we could keep 20+ sessions running, but now the search take
upwards of 10 minutes to search 9000 items. Using TOP, it looks like
Apache grabs all CPU cycles (2-cpu) and spreads the cycles across the
searches. This immediately takes the cpus from 80% idle to 100+% used up,
so nobody on the box gets good response time.

In talking with the HP folks, I have learned that the Apache that comes
with iP is OLD. About 5 versions old.

Is it necessary to use the "oracle" version of Apache, or can we upgrade
the the current HP version of Apache, and still run Apps and iP?

Can a single "apache" service the needs of 3 databases? Right now, we have
an "apache" up and running for each db on the server.

Hardware: HP9000 L2000 2-233mHz cpu, 4G RAM 300+G disk.

Re: Datawarehouse Sizes.....informal poll.

2001-12-06 Thread Don Granaman

I, like many others, have a problem with the "size is everything"
definition. I worked with a 2 TB DSS system six years ago that wasn't
a real "data warehouse". And I've seen a true datawarehouse fledgling
that was under 200 GB (with lots of free space).

However, even making the nonsense assumption, there would have to be a
time factor. What would have been a VLDB five years ago might be
smallish today. And a few tomorrows into the future, it might be
"It's only a petabyte, you can't call THAT a data warehouse!". At
this exact moment, the answer is 42 (x 10 GB). However, that answer
is now obsolete.

Re: Parallel Server

2001-12-06 Thread Don Granaman

Quick answers:
Yes, Maybe, $$$, Yes.

Detailed answer to second part:

It depends on what you need and what you mean by "standby server".
OPS/RAC is multiple instances and a shared database. If you really
need ultimate HA, OPS/RAC is second to none for system or instance
failure events. If one instance or node is blown away (e.g. mainboard
meltdown), then failover to another instance can be very fast and
relatively transparent. There are no data synchronization or data
loss issues as there might be with, for example, a standby database.
On the other hand, . If you mean one catch-all solution for all
possible failure scenarios - HA and DR - then OPS/RAC isn't it. A
shared database means that if there is a media failure, all nodes and
instances are affected. It is run on a local cluster, so it provides
zero protection from site failure events.

OPS/RAC provides great protection against instance or system failure
and none against media or site failure. It can be part of a hybrid
solution to provide complete protection.

ORACLE ON PENTIUM 4 CONFLICT | by Liviu Obreja

Here's a quick tip: The installation of Oracle8i on a Pentium 4 computer
will exit without any notice. The reason for this is that the Pentium 4
architecture has problems with the Just In Time installer. To fix this
problem, just find all copies of the file symcjit.dll and rename them to
symcjit.org. Then the installer will work. Copy the installation CD to the
HDD and make the changes, then install from the HDD. Voila!

If not , I will go for the books that you suggested.

Srinivas -
- I assume that you have the Oracle Magazine articles. If not,
they
are available on-line.
- I'm confused (easily done). You say that you are tuning SQL
statements that statspack has identified and you want more information
on
statspack report interpretation. To me that is two separate issues.
- How statspack identifies the top SQL statement offenders is
pretty
straightforward. There are good books on SQL statement tuning. I don't
have
a favorite at the moment, perhaps someone will
- I haven't seen many resources on interpreting the rest of the
statspack report.
- Take a look at Don Burleson's book "Oracle High-Performance
Tuning
with Statspack". He offers many scripts to present Statspack results in
different forms. His main thesis is that Statspack should be run over a
period of time and the results reviewed to see what are the critical
performance periods for your system. I didn't find his tuning advice as
strong, but then I haven't found anyone that discusses server tuning
well.
There is a new movement to go from examining ratios (like the statspack
report) to examining waits.

Hope this helps.

Re: Change sysdate in database to a future date

2001-12-06 Thread Arn Klammer

SYSDATE is determined by the operating system's date. You can't change the current
date and time in Oracle; you have to change it at the OS level.

If, however, your aim is to determine things like "what's the date one week from
today", then you can use Oracle's date arithmetic functionality (eg, "SYSDATE + 7" to
determine the date one week from today).

RE: Datawarehouse Sizes.....informal poll.

2001-12-06 Thread Mohan, Ross

 Jared,

Thanks. I have the main RK book. Like it. Understand what
little i have read of it. I am just interested in what
folks thought about "size vs. DW definition" was.

I *do* think, tho, that "size does matter".

I don't consider my shared E: drive a datawarehouse
because it can support a star query, one user, and
300 MB of data.

There is 'something' to do with the fact of...alot of
dataskewed dimensions...regular updates...data
cleaning...supporting mining ( and mining for a few
tiny facts in a big haystack requires, after all, the
big haystack )

Anyways.

I figure anything under 250 GB doesn't even merit
being called a data Warehouse.

Maybe a data 7-11.

Thanks for the pointers and your thoughts.

Ross

2001-12-06 Thread Herman Susantio

Hi all,

I've got 2 questions here : (Platform : Sun Solaris) :

1. What is the command in PL/SQL to get unix userID who logged in when I
execute PL/SQL
script ?
2. I have created a new user : ABC123, and the primary group is oinstall.
When I start oracle instance using ABC123, how come the process still
belong to another
user (oracle) ?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Thanks & Regards

You can't revoke the privilege from the schema owner but you CAN keep
them from doing ddl and dml by using database triggers.

now the catch is this:

the trigger HAS to be owned by someone other than the schema owner AND
the schema owner can't have the alter any trigger privilege(either
direct or via a role).

so yes Virgina(since its the xmas season), you can keep the schema owner
from altering data in its own schema.

Voila!

Trigger exception problem

2001-12-06 Thread Kathy Duret

I am brain dead and can't figure this one out probably something really basic.

8.1.6 database

I have a delete trigger when I delete a row from user #1 address table and I want to
insert a corresponding row into an archive address table that belongs to user #2.
If there is any error inserting into the archive address table, I want to insert some
information to an exception table owned by user #2

Insert priviledges have been granted to the 1st user on all the archive tables and the
exception table by user #2. The procedure that the trigger calls is valid. The
procedure is owned by user1.

The initial delete from user 1 works fine and populates the archive log table.
I reinserted the original row and tried to delete it again to get the exception to
write to the
exception table. I get:

SQL> delete from address where addr_id = 3;
delete from address where addr_id = 3
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows

ORA-1: unique constraint (USER2.PK_ARCH_ADDRESS) violated
ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'PKMSPROD.D_ARCH_ADDRESS'

There is only 1 row to delete from the address table. I inserted it and checked it
myself
I excepted the constraint to be violated for the archive address table
I don't get an entry into my exception table

2001-12-06 Thread April Wells

Barbara... have you been talking to men again...?

As I was instructed by the Oracle Data Warhouse class instructor last

Size doesn't matter.
No, really.
Who's imposing the "amount of data" constraint??
Push Dodge and Gorman's "Oracle8 Data Warehousing" book toward your
damagement, and somehow trick them into reading the first chapter. They
quote Inmon (of course) -- a data warehouse is a "subject oriented,
integrated, nonvolatile, and time variant collection of data in support
of
management's decisions". Actually, this manual is a good read on the
subject.

On a lighter note -- we don't have a warehouse, we have a "data mart".
Cuz
we were too small to be a warehouse (at only 30 gigs).

Hello DBA-Gurus,

Executing the same query on 2 databases, but getting different output- the
column title. In all the databases its limited to the value of the row except
in one database we've. All the  databases are of 8.1.7.2 running on IBM/unix
server.

Database- A

select substr('LET ME BABY ONE MORE TIME',1,3) FROM dual;

Database-B
--

select substr('LET ME BABY ONE MORE TIME',1,3) FROM dual;

SUBSTR('LETMEBABYONEMORET

LET

See the output of Database-B - that's the difference from the others. It seems
that its a database specific problem- we tried with all SQLPLUS versions, both
Unix and Windows and objerved the same.

Eager to know what makes the difference - all your comments are welcome.

Thanks

RE: Datawarehouse Sizes.....informal poll.

2001-12-06 Thread Baker, Barbara

Ross
Size doesn't matter.
No, really.
Who's imposing the "amount of data" constraint??
Push Dodge and Gorman's "Oracle8 Data Warehousing" book toward your
damagement, and somehow trick them into reading the first chapter. They
quote Inmon (of course) -- a data warehouse is a "subject oriented,
integrated, nonvolatile, and time variant collection of data in support of
management's decisions". Actually, this manual is a good read on the
subject.

On a lighter note -- we don't have a warehouse, we have a "data mart". Cuz
we were too small to be a warehouse (at only 30 gigs).

Re: Password Changes

user$ is updated and why not just reset it to the known value, only if
you happen to have the "encrypted" password, then you could set it back
using alter user  identified by values 'ENCRYPTED PASSWORD HERE';

otherwise you're outta luck.

RE: V7 online backups

2001-12-06 Thread Jack C. Applewhite

Charlie,

You must first put your database in ArchiveLog mode, of course. The basic
init.ora parameters to set and the command "Alter Database ArchiveLog"
(while mounted, but not open, after a clean shutdown) haven't really changed
from 7 to 8 to 8i, except now you can specify archive log duplexing.

A simple SQL script might get you started.
For each Tablespace:

Alter Tablespace  Begin Backup ;
Host cp /ts1_datafile_1.dbf
Host cp /ts1_datafile_2.dbf
...
Alter Tablespace  End Backup ;
...

Save the datafile copies and your archived redo logs, as well as backup
control files, and you've got it covered. Oh, and don't back up your online
redo logs - they'll be worthless for a recovery and can cause you grief if
you restore them over your current, good, ones.

I'm not sure if I'm bragging or complaining, but I've never setup
or supported online backups for Oracle. I'm being directed to
implement online backups for a V7.3.4.5 instance. A search of
OTN reveals that Oracle no longer seems to have any V7 documents
available anymore. :-(

Since this DB is stuck at V7.3.4.5 for at least 6 more months,
I need to get online backups operational without using RMAN.
If somebody who has *nix shell script(s) or Perl code that
implements online backups, I'd appreciate if you would send a
copy my way. I'm just looking for something to get me started.

Size of US7ASCII database vs. UTF8

2001-12-06 Thread Cherie_Machler

We are currently using US7ASCII for our 240 Gig data warehouse.

We are considering switching over to UTF8 for a new generation
of this product. We would start small in the development database
but by the time that we get to production, we will have just as much
data as we do now.

My question is, does anyone know whether the size of the database
will be significantly impacted by using UTF8 character set as opposed
to US7ASCII? Have you noticed any increase in database size if you
converted over?

Thanks,

ORACLE problem, because "MS Access" do NOT have this problem. Because we
does NOT have application source code, does their has way We can setup
parameter on "init.ora" file to make it work or not?

Our ORACLE version is 8.1.7 on SUN Solaris.

The programme exists in database A. When they want
they have to execute a procedure under sys schema in
Database B to create a user in database B and they
have to be able to pass username and password to teh
procedure.

well...God had other plans and they are getting
ORA - 2064 "distributed operation not supported"
NOw I am stuck with troubleshooting.
Has anybody seen and/or used anything like this ?
ANy pointer is welcome and would be appreciated.

Re: Oracle DB Connection Problem

2001-12-06 Thread DBarbour

Ken,

You probably could use a DBA for support in your current project. Hasn't
the company you're working with provided one? In any case, the error
you're getting could be result of one of several things - it's W2K. First
- generally the message "shared memory realm not available" means the SID
you're using isn't available on that box. Usually due to the DB being
down, but it could be for a host of other reasons. On W2K, making Oracle
available had two parts, the windoze Oracle Services must be running, and
the database must be mounted and open. Are both these conditions
satisfied. Second - if your using terminal services client to access the
server, depending on the version of the TSC, the SP of W2K, and the version
of Oracle, you nay not be able to use SQL Plus from the command line if you
are not a member of the "DBA" group, are using the bequeath protocol, or
your environmental variables are not properly set. Third - kind of like
#2, but check your environment with the SET command. Fourth - you have an
incorrect TNS names entry, or your listener is improperly configured, or
your sqlnet.ora file has a problem.

Troubleshooting connection problems, while it can be almost be reduced to a
checklisted science, is really more of an art.

Hope this helps.

ORACLE ON PENTIUM 4 CONFLICT | by Liviu Obreja

Here's a quick tip: The installation of Oracle8i on a Pentium 4
computer will exit without any notice. The reason for this is that
the Pentium 4 architecture has problems with the Just In Time
installer. To fix this problem, just find all copies of the file
symcjit.dll and rename them to symcjit.org. Then the installer will
work. Copy the installation CD to the HDD and make the changes, then
install from the HDD. Voila!

It doesn't. But then it's faster than Oracle to start with.

Oracle will _always_ be able to beat MySQL at the top end.
But MySQL can (nearly) always beat Oracle at the bottom end.
It's in the middle that things get tricky and many other issues
come into play.

Oracle is much better at spreading IO over multiple disks with fine
granularity, and much better at data caching (MySQL basically only
does index caching - part of it's approach to reliability.)

Better? Probably not. But there's a sufficent API and, of course,
a Perl DBI driver :)

I'd certainly recommend that they look at it. It is *free* after all.
That means that money you save by not buying Oracle licences can
go into more hardware :)

I really don't want to get into any big debate about the pros and
cons of MySQL. It's certainly has it's faults, just like Oracle.
Looked at with an Oracle mindset it'll probably look too basic.
But as with all such issues, people need to try it for themselves.

RE: Duplexing Archived Log Files

2001-12-06 Thread Jack C. Applewhite

Dennis,

We use

log_archive_dest_1
log_archive_dest_2

sending a copy of each archived redo log to our Standby database
(log_archive_dest_2).

log_archive_dest_2 is used with the OPTIONAL parameter, since we don't want
to stop archiving if the Standby is down or there's some problem with the
LAN.

We also have
log_archive_min_succeed_dest = 1
to make sure that the archiving succeeds at least to the local target drive
(log_archive_dest_1).

It's worked great for us (8.1.6.0.0 EE under Win2k).

BTW, we use RMan for hot backups and like it very much. We can also issue
the Alter Tablespace Begin Backup command and get instantaneous results -
which I had to do recently to restore some datafiles to the Standby after
one of its disks failed. I wonder why you get such slow response?

Is anyone using the LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST parameter? Any problems with it?

We are on Oracle 8.1.6 on Compaq Tru64. On our ERP 150-gig. database, we are
currently doing a cold backup weekly. This means that we are very dependent
on archive logs.
   - Recovery time isn't a big concern. In the event of a failure, recovery
time isn't that critical. Loss of a week of work would be.
   - We have tried hot backups successfully on smaller databases, but we
found that once we issue ALTER TABLESPACE BEGIN BACKUP there was often a
delay of hours for that command to complete. So we gave up on hot backups.
   - We are starting to work with RMAN and feel in the long run this will be
an ideal solution. Thanks to everyone for answering my newby RMAN questions.
   - Recently Oracle has added a feature to duplex the archive log files.
This sounds like it would lessen our archive log vulnerability. However, it
causes my sys admin more work, so I would appreciate some feedback before I
add this burden to his work.
Thanks for any thoughts you care to share.

RE: Duplexing Archived Log Files

2001-12-06 Thread Mohan, Ross

if you duplex mandatory and one server destination fails..is fixed...the
time lag for the db to become aware of the now-available second mandatory
location can be lengthy.

I have witnessed a test where it took 11 Minutes.

that's a lng time, when you are waiting for the db to "figure out"
that everything is fixed and available to restart

same type of symptoms as a full archive log dest location, but longer
recovery/awareness time.

RE: statspack interpretations

2001-12-06 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS

Srinivas -
- I assume that you have the Oracle Magazine articles. If not, they
are available on-line.
- I'm confused (easily done). You say that you are tuning SQL
statements that statspack has identified and you want more information on
statspack report interpretation. To me that is two separate issues.
- How statspack identifies the top SQL statement offenders is pretty
straightforward. There are good books on SQL statement tuning. I don't have
a favorite at the moment, perhaps someone will
- I haven't seen many resources on interpreting the rest of the
statspack report.
- Take a look at Don Burleson's book "Oracle High-Performance Tuning
with Statspack". He offers many scripts to present Statspack results in
different forms. His main thesis is that Statspack should be run over a
period of time and the results reviewed to see what are the critical
performance periods for your system. I didn't find his tuning advice as
strong, but then I haven't found anyone that discusses server tuning well.
There is a new movement to go from examining ratios (like the statspack
report) to examining waits.

Hope this helps.

V7 online backups

2001-12-06 Thread Charlie Mengler

TIA & HAND!

RE: SQL to find duplicate rows...

Jim,

An option that handles multiple duplicates is:

Delete
>From MyTable
Where (MyColumn,RowID) In
(
 Select MyColumn,RowID
 From MyTable
 Minus
 Select MyColumn,Min(RowID)
 From MyTable
 Group By MyColumn
);

You could use Max(RowID) as well, depending on your needs.

RE: Parallel Server

2001-12-06 Thread tday6

Actually, Oracle uses OPS internally on their e-mail system. For that
reason (Larry likes his mail fresh every morning) the OPS gets patches and
bug fixes with a very high priority. I used to have to install them.
Oracle runs it on HP-UX HA (High Availability). It's expensive but it
performs flawlessly if it's set up by HP and Oracle.

What version and platform??? I've had some exposure to OPS in 7.3 on HP a
couple years ago and it was nightmare... I've heard it is much better now
though... Anyone using the 9i stuff yet??? I'm sure there are people with
more recent experience and their input more up to date than mine... That
being said, my concerns are that OPS is a relatively low usage product for
Oracle... And therefore, when you encounter an issue, it is more likely
that it is a "new" bug... Which means more diagnostic patches, down time,
less people with experience to talk to and more sleepless nights... Been
there, done that... If I were you, I wouldn't consider it unless it was at
least 8.1 or above... Get used to raw devices... I'm not sure, but I
think
the Oracle OPS license is fairly expensive... I really don't know for sure
though... And, make sure you have enough money in the budget to have an
OPS
system in your TEST environment... Trust me on that one... Regardless of
the version...

My questions are... Is this a new app or will you try to port an existing
app to OPS? Is this solely a failover standby? What is the failover time
requirements? How much money do you have to spend? Have you considered
standby databases? Either from Oracle or a third party (i.e. Shareplex)...
How big is the database?

RE: SQL to find duplicate rows...

2001-12-06 Thread Jack C. Applewhite

Jim,

Oops! Right after I sent this, I saw that you asked to find, not delete,
duplicates.

Sorry, I've spent the last two days de-duping a bunch of tables, so I've got
deletion on the brain.

How about:

Select SomeColumn
>From MyTable
Where MyColumn In
(
 Select MyColumn
 From My Table
 Group By MyColumn
 Having Count(*) > 1
)
;

Jim,

An option that handles multiple duplicates is:

Delete
>From MyTable
Where (MyColumn,RowID) In
(
 Select MyColumn,RowID
 From MyTable
 Minus
 Select MyColumn,Min(RowID)
 From MyTable
 Group By MyColumn
);

You could use Max(RowID) as well, depending on your needs.

Duplexing Archived Log Files

2001-12-06 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS

Voila!

RE: Oracle DB Connection Problem

2001-12-06 Thread Mercadante, Thomas F

Ken

The database is not up. The NT services are not running.

To start them, from GUI go to Start|Control Panel|Administrative
Tools|Services, find the Oracle service and start it. Check the service to
be sure it is "Auto Start" enabled.

If you cannot get to the machine, telnet to the box and, at the DOS prompt,
type :  net start oracleservice{sid}

The above will start the Oracle service and the database both.

hope this helps

supporting all these environments, and not everybody is knowledgeable in all

startup remote instance 9i

2001-12-06 Thread nlzanen1

Hi All,

client 8.1.6 (NT)
Server 9.0.1 (W2K)

I'm trying to start/stop the instance remotely and am not succeding.

First it complains about obsolete parameters
JOB_QUEUE_INTERVAL & MTS_DISPATCHERS, but they should not be there since
they are not in the pfile, nor the spfile (both on server)

then it goes on to start the instance, after which it complains about
identifying the controlfiles.

My understanding was that with an spfile I did not have to have a local
copy of the init files

What am I missing here??

TIA

Jack

Dear all,

I had promised a few people on the list that I would send an update about
Listers meeting at OOW, so here goes!

A few of us got together at a Chevy's restaurant near Moscone for a chance
to say hello and put a face to a name. This included Steve 'Guru' Adams (yes
- *the* Steve A all the way from Downunder), Rachel 'DBA Godess' Carmichael,
Gaja 'Tuning 101' Vaidyanatha, Kirti 'Tuning 101' Deshpande, Ari 'Pocket
DBA' Kaplan, Steve 'now in Montana' Orr, Jeremiah '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
Wilton, Kevin 'Tap-key' Toepke, Gopala 'X$' Krishnan, Jonathan 'OReilly'
Gennick, Gerardo 'local@Schwab' Molina and John 'sleepless@SanJose'
Kanagaraj. We did miss Eric 'Google-gunner' Pierce though!

Starting off with a first round of free drinks from Ari (c/o Expand Beyond -
thanks Ari!), everyone settled in to talk and listen and order and eat,
amidst swapping stories of glory and honor and sleepless nights recovering
the Db as well as horror stories of layoffs and interviewing clueless
candidates. Also swapped were details of X$ tables and other UNIX internal
structures (who can do without those!) as well as hunting and other
adventure trips. Ari showed us some cool toys (were there more than two
Pocket PCs on you, Ari?) and we all 'Oohed' and 'Aahed' over them.. Steve
A's birthday was celebrated in usual Chevy's style with the gift of a straw
hat and special birthday-boy dessert (although he claimed that his birthday
was actually today as per Australian time!). That was the signal for us to
start splitting - we would have continued through the night if the
restaurant didn't have to close up

Cheers!

I have evaluated I/Watch and it was pretty good. Especially with
Spotlight. I have actually seen Spotlight help me quickly identify
a problem which I am not sure I could have found so easily with
out the visual picture. I had both tools for about 3 months but
could not get anyone to agree to the bucks.

Depending on what you are looking for out of OEM it really is not
a bad tool. It is the one that is the least intrusive on your servers
and you need not create objects in your database for it. Thing
I learned though is to make sure you set up warnings for email and not
page. Really annoying when you get paged at 3AM cause a tablespace is
80% full. Ya, so, tell me tomorrow. Make sure you do not have alert
log monitoring on for development systems. If you do you may be
tempted to kill your developers. It might not be the best tool out
there but if you work with the right versions of Oracle and use the
OEM agents for 8.1.7 or 9i its pretty good. It does not have those problems
of not being able to deregister and all that fun stuff that existing
in 8. Don't forget that the agents do not have be the same version as the
database.

I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences.

My question on this topic is what tools are appropriate for what
environments? Some tools seem more extensive (and expensive) and therefore
appropriate to sites with many Oracle instances. I am currently responsible
for 5 production instances all at our HQ datacenter. On those rare occasions
when something goes down, some usually quickly contacts me, so I haven't
felt the need for a monitoring tool. However, we are discussing a project to
put servers in a handful of manufacturing plants and they would be more 23x7
situations, so I have been reviewing OEM (it fails a lot more often than the
instance, I'm not about to turn on its remote notification). Naturally
vendors will claim that their product is just ideal for your type of site.
Does anyone have any input on which monitoring tools are appropriate for
sites with a smaller number of Oracle instances? Thanks.

you get the call to implement. Just my $.02, since you asked :)

Hi -

Does anyone have experience with either of these products? I'm interested
in ease of installation, ease of use, and quality of support. I realize
they are both pricey, but they both seem to do a lot. I've been asked to
look at alternatives (I'm sure the cost will be prohibitive, but we'll see).

Also if you know of any comparable tools, I'm very interested to hear about
them.

Thanks much -

RE: Parallel Server

2001-12-06 Thread Hallas John
Title: RE: Parallel Server

We are using OPS quite intensively here. Not necessarily for the correct reasons.
OPS certainly assists in maintaining uptime under a lot of circumstances. It is excellent for spreading workload between nodes/instances but you still have to design access to point to different nodes (judicious use of tnsnames entries).

My main reservations re OPS (and the way we have implemented it) are the following
1) The datafiles are still a single point of failure. If a file is corrupt, deleted or whatever then the whole system is effectively down (dependant upon which datafile of course)

2)Even worse if a table is dropped or rows deleted etc there is no easy recovery without loosing uptime
3) OPS was applied to a non OPS application which means that key tables are being accessed all the time by multi nodes, again a key failure issue as well as a performance one.

4) Some schema updates and new releases require downtime which is difficult in a 24*7*365 system !
5) We have found that a lot of effort was required from an OS level (Compaq Tru64 5.1) to get the patches right
6) I think the maintenenace of a cluster and OPS is an expensive option, both in licensing, support costs and manaeagability

Correct me if I am wrong but I always thought that OPS was initially brought out when a 4 CPU node was the maximum and it was a way of hranessing a number of niodes to achieve greater processing power. That is not the case now. I know there are other advantages but as I say I am sure that was the original purpose.

If I had a preference I think I would be tempted to go for 2 servers with a database replicated across each of them. I know that is not an easy solution, but it does provide full resilience as well as the means of taking one server down for maintenance without loosing the system. I think the cost of managing the system is also reduced. Upgrades can be tested on the 2nd server and a fallback position is always available.

As to the original question standby v OPS. I don;t think it is comparing like with like. You really ned to sit down and list what you need, what you would like, how much you have to spend in time, effort and money and then compare standy and OPS against that list

HTH

Is anyone using Oracle Parallel Server?  It that the best solution for a
standby server?
Any idea what it would cost?  Are there any classes covering implementation?

Your Oracle instance is DOWN: you need to run "svrmgrl", then "connect
internal", then "startup".
(you can also run ORADIM with some parameter ...)
