The application is a third-party application using Merant's ODBC driver.

How do people normally install the client. Do you do an install to every
workstation???

- add the network pc as a search drive to the client pc.

We are now experiencing problems over the WAN and looking at ways to
eliminate the Oracle dll overhead. Short of installing Oracle on every
client PC, what are our options?

There is a reason that Oracle doesn't support configurations like
this. There is a fair amount of chatter between an application and the
Oracle client DLL's. When this chatter starts flying over the network
rather than merely going to a local DLL, you start to get performance
problems.

How are your application(s) designed? It's probably possible to tweak an
OCI application to make fewer OCI calls. If you're using ODBC, and have
the budget, you could purchase one of the wire-protocol ODBC drivers.

I swapped emails with a member of the list and Im having trouble seeing how
you can take 3NF, BCNF, etc... and turn that into DBA speak. One of the
guys told me that BCNF essentially means you have a key that you can put a
unique constraint on. Well that makes this much easier to understand.

All my theory books just discuss theory. Anyone know some that split the
difference. IE, not Codd, not CJ Date, Not the academic textbooks.

Thanks.

Re: Oracle EE and SE on same box

2003-11-03 Thread david davis
We did that this year except it was 8.0.6 SE and 8.1.7 EE. No big issue.
Other than having 2 listeners on different ports the most annoying task was
that the method of setting the Oracle Home and associated environment
variables for the usage by the shell scripts and the database start
procedures initiated by server bootstrap had to be changed.

This was a server consolidation effort.

Installation of Oracle 9i server components from a remote Terminal

Yes. got that one last year. Still got it.
Installed the doco in my PC at work so I could
read it in peace and quiet (!). Installed the s/w
as well so I could play with it.
Went straight to their recovery manual. Basically,
it reads like this:
restore all db files
apply saved logs
No partial recovery, no online recovery, no
PITR, nothing. Put me off the whole thing straight
away.
But if I may quote dubya: make no mistake, they'll
fix it. And then it will be quite interesting...

RE: oracle authentication from windows

2003-06-20 Thread david davis
This is an interesting one. I am currently going through (tortured) another
system audit. One of the many questions the auditors (I am being attacked
from all sides) had about the Oracle configuration was Can remote
authenticated network users connect to the database?.

If auditors know this is a weakness, maybe it would be a good idea to avoid
its use.

btw I do use O/S authenticated userids but remote authentication has been
disabled (deliberately). We are running Oracle on Unix so our batch jobs use
O/S authenticated ids.

Sure.

Just declare these in your init.ora

os_authent_prefix=OPS$
remote_os_authent=TRUE
bounce the database, add a user called OPS$the Windows username, e.g.
OPS$AK if your Windows login id is AK as
create user ops$ak identified externally

From windows connect as /@servicename, e.g. sqlplus /@service1

If it doesn't work, the OS user may be different. Use this query while
connected to the database from Windows cleint.
SQL select sys_context('USERENV','OS_USER') from dual;

See what OS username comes up; use that instead.

Shutdown immediate would be a better choice. Might also be a good idea to

shutdown
Should I modify the script to shutdown immediate so that it kills

Re: POLL: Database to DBA ratio

2003-03-11 Thread david davis
Chuck,

I support 17 development, 2 production oracle databases, 3 DB2/MVS databases
and 1 SQL Server. A coworker supports only 1 application and that is in
UAT/Dev environment but it is a highly active application in the
multi-Terabyte range (UDB). We have external prod. support for some of our
apps (IBM).

I think how many a DBA can support will depend upon a number of things such
as (by no means a complete list):

- Production Support and/or App. Dev support
- Frequency of change to an application. Some stay in a constant state
 of change.
- Complexity of system (ERP, n-tier, custom, vendor)
- Procedures/processes/technology to allow easier support of multiple
 systems.

I'm trying to build a case for management that we need additional DBAs so
I'd like to take a quick poll if I may. What is the ratio of Oracle
databases to DBAs in your shop? This includes development and production
databases. At our shop it's 33:1.

Re: Character Set / Encrypted text question

2003-03-06 Thread david davis
Mark,

I have seen this issue here where an application scrambles/encrypts data
into a character field varchar2 but it doesn't work right when moved to
another environment.

The source environment was using NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
but the target was using NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII. Going from an
8-bit characterset to a 7-bit characterset causes problems where the byte
code value should have been properly represented by 8 bits and not 7.

eg. VARCHAR2(15) field contains data ÚØÝ (dec: 218, 216, 221) comes out as
U?Y when converted to US7ASCII (see SQL CONVERT function).

Another app I use here does work, but it stores the values in Hex not with
the character representation.

Options:

Used 8 bit characterset on database.
Store data as hex value eg. Passwords stored in Oracle table (dba_users
[sys.user$]) which is a VARCHAR2(30) field.
User RAW fields.

Converting the database characterset requires a database recreation.

Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2003 19:28:46 -0800
Dear List,

I have a question for the character set guru's out there...

We are trying to store encrypted text from a Forte application into a
varchar2 column in Oracle (8.1.7.4). When Forte retrieves the string a
couple of the characters appear to have changed value. I assume we are
experiencing some kind of character set limitation. Does anyone have any
ideas about how we might work around this issue? I have included the NLS
section from out init.ora section for reference.
The only workaround we can think of is converting the string to hex values
and reassembling these into a long string and then storing that result.
Does this sound reasonable (assuming it's not a simple character set
change).
Please keep the help simple - I have never had to be concerned with
character sets before and don't really understand all of the terminology.
# NLS settings
nls_date_format = DD-MON-
nls_sort= BINARY
nls_language= AMERICAN
nls_numeric_characters  = .,
Thanks in advance,

Mark.

I would never want to rely on that method. I had run into that several years

problems were numerous because of checkpoint information in the datafiles vs
the control files were out of whack. The database was garbage.

Are you suggesting that it is OK to copy an open database without
using hot backup mode, as long as there isn't a log switch during
copy?
Do you use this method at your place of employment?

To prevent the situation from occuring I have the SA exclude the mount

The last time I had a UNIX SA backup an open database the backup software
locked a control file just as Oracle was trying to write a checkpoint.
Crashed the database and left the database unopenable. Fortunately (or per
Oracle's recommendation) we had multiple copies of the control file and we
just copied a good version over the corrupted one. Database worked fine
after that.
Personally I would never recommend backing up an open database and, if that
were to happen, I would consider that backup to be a 'scratch' tape.

Listener/Database shutdown sequence

2003-03-03 Thread david davis
Should the databases be shutdown before the listener or the other way
around.

A DBA here (actually at Service Provider) believes that the listener has to
be shutdown before the databases in 8i according to some documentation (they
can't recall).

I am proposing:

Set Oracle 817 environment
shutdown database
stop 817 listener
set Oracle 806 environment
stop 806 listener
They feel it should be the other order:
Shutdown Listeners
Shutdown databases
Any comments and/or issues

Why do you/they think it matters, regardless of the documentation?

You can shut them down in any order you want. Users just get a
different error if the listener is up vs. when it is down.
Starting up, if services are registered via local_listener or
mts_dispatchers, the listener should be up before the database opens.
Otherwise, you will have to wait for instance registration with the
listener, or force it with 'alter system register'.
For dedicated connections, this problem can be avoided with a sid_desc
in the listener.ora

I didn't really think it mattered for the shutdown. Though I know in Oracle
7 it did matter for the startup (we use MTS). Another DBA seemed to imply
that the sequence was important on shutdown of 8i.

So if in doubt I RTFM, suffer the metalink search and post to the list. As
usual, the most successful path is the list.

Thx

Re: MS SQL hasn't given up!

2003-02-28 Thread david davis
Sorry but point 7 isn't exactly true.

Transaction logging does take place and can be backed up for reapplication
to a database backup.

Its not perhaps as well implemented as Oracle's but I have a system with the
transaction log backed up every 30 minutes.

The implementation is different but the effect is the same with the ability
to do point in time recovery. And they do have log shipping capability in
SQL Server 2000 (Enterprise).

The point that really bothered me was the lack of multiplexing the writes to
the transaction logs (redo). DB2/UDB has it. The MSS method (only option)
is to Mirror.

Fresh in memory because 2 days ago I had meeting with MS SQL people from
Microsoft.
I will talk about MS SQL 2000 Enterprise.
1. MS SQL cannot handle exception. There is nothing like EXCEPTION WHEN ...
THEN.
2. MS SQL has nothing like package.

3. MS SQL has nothing like partitioned table (next release in 2 years will
have)
4. There is nothing like INSERT NOLOGGING. You have start/stop logging for
whole session.
5. There's nothing like sequence (Well, IDENTITY column IS NOT sequence).

6. Well, you can use undocumented function pwdencrypt and pwdcompare to
store
passwords (the same hash function for storing users password is using MS
SQL)
:-)

7. There is nothing like ARCHIVE MODE in MS SQL.

Just my notes from meeting.

Nope. Can backup online. However certain actions can't be perfomed while the
transaction log is being backed. eg. Add new database file to the system.
This also applies to database backups.

Not sure if this is true... I heard that to back up the transaction log,
the
database has to be stopped.

RE: Dealing with 3rd Party Applications

2003-02-27 Thread david davis
it to TRUE for the instance. If you can set TIMED_STATISTICS to TRUE, then
please use the sort=prsela,exeela,fchela clause with the TKPROF command;
if it is FALSE, then please use sort=exeqry, execu, fchqry, fchcu clause.
This way, the worst SQL statements will percolate to the top of the TKPROF
report...
If you can get a TKPROF report, would you like to paste the relevant
section
for the offending SQL statement back to the list? That way, you'll get
lots
of ideas from the best tuning folks in the world.

And don't forget to DISABLE or DROP that trigger when you've gotten your
trace! Coming from personal experience, it is *VERY* embarrassing to have
to explain why the file-system housing the USER_DUMP_DEST keeps filling
up... :-(
Also how do you usually deal with 3rd party application issues like
this?
 95% of our databases/applications are from 3rd party vendors and it's a
pain
trying to get them performing better.

We never have control over the application and it is always a pain.
However, don't neglect the possibility that the application is somehow
misconfigured or configured inappropriately somehow. It's not easy to ask
questions about this without triggering the knee-jerk No! Everything's
fine! response, but is it reasonable that an application session would
need
to perform those several-thousand queries at each login? Is it a two-tier
(a.k.a. client-server) application where every user session spawns a
corresponding database session, or is it an N-tier application where the
app-server is creating a pool of database connections. A huge up-front
load like you describe is more characteristic of the N-tier app-server, and
less characteristic of client-server connections. Just some food for
thought...

 Thanks,
 Jeff Eberhard
Good luck!

Re: newbie dba question

2003-02-27 Thread david davis
Alex

In my experience, when I have inherited systems worrying about tuning was
the least of my concerns. I could think of other things to look into first
(no particular order):

- Backup/Recovery procedures
 - like do backups happen, archivelog mode on (you would be surprised)
- Database Event monitoring and notification processes in place
- Security
- Database Layout
- System Resources = got enough room for your next backup
As for tuning, I will leave that for the many DBA's on the list who are
Guru's in that field.

Hello Gurus,

I heard that if I can get great ORACLE advice, this is the place, so here
is my question. I've been asked to take over an existing db in production.
What would be the right way to get a quick understanding on what's
happening in it in terms ways for proactive tuning? I am just getting
started while trying to be ahead of the curve. Is this something I should
be looking into, or is it more like if it ain't broke, don't fix it? :).
It'd be nice to get started and have a good view on what's going on. Also,
can someone can share their experience on what can be done when customers
report intermittent, but rather dramatic slowdowns in the system. Please
note, the slowdowns are reported to be occurring in the entire system. What
would be a good place to look when this happens and get some quick
feedback?

Thank you very much!

Best regards,

Alex

PL/SQL - Exception Handling for utl_file

2003-02-26 Thread david davis
Perhaps someone on the list will know the answer as I have not found
anything in the manual (though I might have missed it).

If a procedure is performing file i/o to more than one file and an exception
is raised related to the utl_file package how can I determine which file had
the exception?

eg.

begin
...
utl_file.put_line(fh_extract,v_extract_dataline);
utl_file.put_line(fh_log,v_logmsg);
...
exception
when utl_file.write_error then
 ...
end;

On the local level (eg Denmark) they might have a CD or they might not.
There won't be a centralised, systematic archiving effort. Frankly, when I
was in Support, I would sometimes contact a customer that I knew had a
certain (old) version and have them ship a copy or lend it to me, so that I
could help another customer.

I'm not sure there's a central archive at HQ either. I've never heard about
it, which doesn't say much, but I know for a fact about certain versions on
certain platforms that couldn't even be located in Development during their
supported cycle - but that's the odd exception, of course. I'd be very
surprised if Oracle has a registered copy of version 5 in an archive,
although there might still be some sensitive and confidential installations
around with that version running.

I was informed by someone at IBM that Oracle could burn new CD's. If you
truly have a need for the CD. Such as lost/broken. Put pressure on them
via your account rep.

I hardly think it is likely for a vendor to say they don't have the code.
If we have people on the list with software dating back to Oracle 4, I
doubt Oracle is purging its archives of the software. It would be
irrational. It is more likely they are just being difficult. Doing nothing
is always the easiest route for the vendor.

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from

Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Here is one Don't

Done rely on gui tools to accomplish any task. Great DBAs can endure the

Yes, regarding these 3, how can they be considered absolute do's or don'ts?
I didn't take Cary's material to mean ignore physical IO's but rather to
show the importance and impact of logical IO's. Too many PIOs could still
be an issue.
(I would say maybe Cary could speak to this, but I'd rather him spend that
time on his book, which I'll be ordering as soon as it's available.)
The others have their places as well. I wouldn't practice or preach that
bind variables are always, always the right way (usually, but not always).
Why not ASSM? Surely, there could be circumstances where ASSM is a good
way, or at least ok.
Do Use Bind Variables
Do tune to Reduce Logical IO's Not Physical IO's.
Don't Use ASSM
Please consider, Robert, that I'm not challenging your list as these may be
very good rules to live by. I don't usually take any 'rule' as hard and
fast until I can test it, but there may be others reading the list that
would benefit greatly to understand why these things should or should not
be
done.
Thanks for your input, it helps us all learn.

Yeah, these are actually replacements, too. But when I ordered them, the
person (back when you could actually talk to a person on a non-level 1

was surprised that they had any 7.x media in stock. She had said that they
would distribute the CDs only as long as they had stock.

Maybe I'll make an Oracle Mobile using these CDs and all the Start Here

RE: Using fully qualified table_name.database_object in

2003-02-24 Thread david davis
Our application vendor code doesn't pre-qualify table references and to
isolate batch processes from running under the object owner. I use synonyms
(public) so the code doesn't have to change but I get the security isolation
that I want. Wouldn't want a developer sliding a drop table into his code
or perhaps a delete/update to the vendor's audit trail.

I have 5800 synonyms in our OLTP environment and about 1300 in our reporting
environment. I have not found it difficult to manage (well not very - the
wrapped database links are a little more work) and our application is always
changing (or so it seems).

What's the big deal with herding cats. The sleep for like 23 1/2 hrs a day.

Most application developers in my experience are in love with synonyms
exactly so they won't have to fully qualify the table name. Oracle uses
them fairly extensively in APPs. They do require some overhead for
looking up the synonym and they can be a mess if nested deeply enough.
Controlling use of synonyms on the other hand is a lot like herding
cats.

I would like to know if it is advocated to use fully qualified
table_name.database objects in application code.
Example would be schema.table_name in a PL/SQL code.

I would like to know the Pros/Cons if there are any?

Thanks in advance.

RE: How long to hold onto old Oracle CDs?

2003-02-24 Thread david davis
I cut an iTAR on Metalink back last Oct. It would have been simpler. If
someone had maintained our support agreement. But while that was being
resolved. The sent me the CD. I got the CD in a couple of days.

I was informed by someone at IBM that Oracle could burn new CD's. If you
truly have a need for the CD. Such as lost/broken. Put pressure on them via
your account rep.

I hardly think it is likely for a vendor to say they don't have the code. If
we have people on the list with software dating back to Oracle 4, I doubt
Oracle is purging its archives of the software. It would be irrational. It
is more likely they are just being difficult. Doing nothing is always the
easiest route for the vendor.

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.
Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to

Hey all,

Can anyone think of a reason to hold on to Oracle 7.3.3 HP/UX CDs? We've
been at 8.1.7 for 18 months now. I can't think of a good reason, other
than
the software isn't available anymore.

Anybody want some old CDs? :)

if you can choose take 9i. that's what we did.

BUT: nothing is flawless. Be prepared for patches and pitfalls - even

We run 9i and 8i on NT5 and Solaris 8 and 9 and linux. patches and

RE: {SPAM?} RE: Teradata baned from IOUG???

2003-02-15 Thread david davis
Another advantage of SQR is multi-platform. We used to run SQR/MVS against
DB2, now run it on Unix against Oracle and of course the SQR for Windows
product against Oracle. It was simple to port our SQR code from DB2/MVS to
Oracle. Now it might be tougher as we use a lot of Oracle specific stuff in
our queries which makes it harder to port. But SQR is a decent product. We
use it with PeopleSoft but another part of our business (Investment
division) also uses the product for their systems.

I wish I had it available for use with one of our finance systems. Having to
program in PL/SQL. That's a real drag when it comes to doing file i/o for
logs/reports.

Well,

I see one reason ... (I am no expert in Oracle reports), but it seems more
maintainable to write in SQR than in reports (so they claim here). Plus
SQR
can act asa glorified data loader when a bunch of processing needs to be
done on incoming raw data.

I wouldn't discount SQR right away, but after all it is almost glorified
COBOL (IMHO).

Doing dynamic SQL is much much easier in SQR than in Oracle Reports (again
my experience SQR 4/5/6 and ORacle Reports 6/6i). SQRs use of lookup tables
and breaks make life simpler as well. It has usable array interface ... for
data processing. We have couple of SQR reports that run in about 4000 lines
of code (don't ask me why)

We looked at SQR in 94.

We didn't have need of controlling fonts and such, which I guess
SQR is good at.

The SQR rep could come up with no compelling reason to use SQR
rather than Perl, so simple ( as in not much procedural processing
needed ) reports were done in Sqlplus. Anything complex was done
in Perl.

We never regretted that decision.

Les - Oh you wanted the hard questions answered as well. Given that
you
mentioned you were a MS sys admin, I'd say that would give you a leg
up.
 A
lot of shops have combined DBA/Sys admins for MS. That might be your
 easiest
transition. I hate to say this, especially on this list, but you may
 want
 to
look at adding MS SQL certification just to give you more options,
like
 the
target employer might have Oracle and MS SQL. Depending on your
salary
demands, your chances of getting on as a newbie DBA are probably
okay.
A
 lot
depends on your networking ability, good resume, no criminal record
that
 can
be easily traced ;-), good personal hygiene, charm in interviews,
   persistence, and just plain luck.
The ecommerce side has had a real dose of reality in the last
couple
 of
years, but is still there. Consider just getting some Oracle
experience
 and
then moving over to ecommerce. Most companies still have some type
of
ecommerce area. Otherwise, in your spare time, learn everything you
can
about ecommerce from the marketing drivel down to HTML.
These are obviously not well-informed opinions, but worth every
penny
 you
   paid ;-)

Les - Here is an idea for you. Think up a trivial application for
a
database. Maybe your home albums or DVDs. Try to make it a little
relational, like have an artist table. Force yourself to work
with
 it.
   At
the right time I was secretary of a bowling league, so each year I
 rewrote
   a
league management program in a different language, whatever I
needed
 to
learn. I went through Oracle, COBOL, Perl, C, all in different
years.
 The
point is that by playing user you get a good feel for why the
heck
somebody would use a database to begin with.

Good Advice. But Alas, I have not yet had the time to learn Perl. Though I
have all the material to learn it. Including a interesting little book Perl
for Oracle DBAs.

One of these days I will stop treading water and starting swimming for

Try Perl.

It's magnitudes better than PL/SQL for files and logs.

 Well,

I see one reason ... (I am no expert in Oracle reports), but it seems
more
maintainable to write in SQR than in reports (so they claim here).
Plus
 SQR
can act asa glorified data loader when a bunch of processing needs to
be
 done on incoming raw data.

I wouldn't discount SQR right away, but after all it is almost
glorified
 COBOL (IMHO).

Doing dynamic SQL is much much easier in SQR than in Oracle Reports
(again
my experience SQR 4/5/6 and ORacle Reports 6/6i). SQRs use of lookup
tables and breaks make life simpler as well. It has usable array
interface ... for data processing. We have couple of SQR reports that
run
in about 4000 lines of code (don't ask me why)

We looked at SQR in 94.

We didn't have need of controlling fonts and such, which I guess
 SQR is good at.

The SQR rep could come up with no compelling reason to use SQR
rather than Perl, so simple ( as in not much procedural processing
needed ) reports were done in Sqlplus. Anything complex was done
 in Perl.

 We never regretted that decision.

Must have been basic theory or perhaps they were referring to ANSI SQL which
we all use.

You will find substantial differences between UDB, DB2/MVS, Oracle and SQL
Server and all the others. I have worked at one time or another with the
above mentioned and moving from one to another was fairly easy as a
developer but for a DBA it was more complicated due to architecture
differences in implementation.

Of course, maybe I am just a slow learner.

btw This guy was he the same one that said in a couple of years programmers

Lisa,

I have seen no requirement for DBMS_JOB from PeopleSoft in HRMS 7.5 (or
earlier). Though we have used it in the past ourselves when we were doing

I do see DBMS_IJOB running (due to job_queue_processes being set) but that
wasn't a PeopleSoft thing. As a general rule PeopleSoft avoids DBMS specific

Re: Re[2]: Peoplesoft Oracle

2003-01-29 Thread david davis
Dick,

The grant users option has been around since release 2 (was on installation
table back then). I had not tested turning it off. Our practice is create
the userid then change the default tablespaces then notify clients of new
userid. It works for us, because the DBA's happen to be the security
administrators.

If you are creating the Oracle side of the user account, how are you doing
password synchronisation?

PeopleSoft 8 has password aging done within the application, but to use pure
database password aging prior to PeopleSoft 8 you can use Braintree's
SQLSecure product. The peopleSoft software has DLL/database integration with
the product if you have it installed. It also does cross database password
synchronisation.

I thought the lowest common denominator was DB2 guess its been lowered. The
do Windows development on SQLServer, but Unix is done on UDB. I wonder if
PeopleSoft will move away from SQLServer as a source development platform
now the Microsoft is trying to get into the CRM business. Direct
competition.

David Lisa,

1st point is that were still on PeopleTools 7.53 so this may be
somewhat
dated. Anyway, go to Peopletools, utilities, use Peopletools options.
Uncheck
the Grant Access option low behold, PeopleTools will not try to
create a
user via the grant connect to syntax that is so out dated as to be
atrocious.
The down side is that you now have to create the user manually, but we
did put
together a trigger/dbms_job system that does it automatically as we wanted.
 Now
why in tarnation would one want to do that, Well as it turns out if you use
that
syntax, as Lisa noted, everyone is assigned SYSTEM as their default and
temp
tablespace. Well that's not so bad since their there only for a very brief
period of time before changing over to SYSADMIN or whatever else you happen
to
use. The problem is that PeopleSoft in their VAST wisdom coded the first 2
select statements with a group by in them, just incase there was a
duplication
of data in ps.psdbowner and/or psoprdefn. Now I do not want to bad mouth
them
because that was not a bad idea. The bad point is that you end up with
temp
segments in system and a fragmented system tablespace. YUCK!! OH for 9i
and a
system wide default temp tablespace!!

OH, also one item of extreme note. DON'T setup password aging for your
users.
PeopleTools doesn't appreciate it at all.

BTW: I would not say that PeopleSoft does not know databases, they just
minored
in them instead. The real problem is that they code to the least common
denominator in the dbms market, namely SqlServer. So be prepared for lots
of
fun, and do watch Customer Connection. They every once in a while come out
with
a note or patch that is Oracle specific and really does help. One would
think
that there'd be more of them since something like 75% of PeopleSoft's
installs
are on Oracle. Of course their development is on Sql Server. Go figure!!

There is a resolution 19368 on customer connection which discusses which
rights the SYSADM account requires and which ones can be revoked. Though it
was somewhat better formatted when I retrieved it in 1999. It was last
modified in 2002.

I am curious how you turn off the create user? I didn't think you could do
that, only control the grants that take place.

A little gotcha I ran into a couple of years ago when I revoked access was

Lisa,
Sounds like a default install of PeopleSoft. Step 1 that you can do is
re-assign everyone to use a real temp tablespace. Step 2 is break up that
db
onto seperate spindles. Step 3 is to turn off autoextend exept for those
tablespaces that are nearing say 90% full, then set autoextend to
something
sensible. As far as the user accounts are concerned that's normal. I for
one
would revoke DBA from sysadmin grant alter any user instead.
Afterwards, I'd
get into PeopleTools turn off the creat user function. I could write
more,
but this should keep you VERY busy.

Re: Peoplesoft Oracle

2003-01-28 Thread david davis
Lisa,

What you have described is a PeopleSoft database with bad habits. The usage
of dictionary managed tablespaces is normal but will probably change over
time. While the PeopleSoft installation guide and delivered scripts create
using the older method, you can certainly using the locally managed
approach.

There is a document red paper on PeopleSoft customer connection titled
PeopleSoft 8 Batch Performance on Oracle Database that is probably worth
downloading. Path to the documents is products|peopletools|peopletools
resource library.

Alas, documentation from the vendor is weak. Or as I have discovered
postively brilliant in comparison to other vendors who say nothing
configure Oracle the same as SQL Server {doh}.

Can't really comment on the autoextend. Use it myself to delay going through
change mgmt process. :-) PeopleSoft does deliver a script to autoextend but
it is not the default. So that was a deliberate choice of the DBA.

It is normal for all application users to connect via the schema owner. The
users Oracle account is used during the logon process for cross
authentication with application security and the database. This changes to
certain degree in PeopleTools 8 family.

I believe at some point in PeopleSoft 8, you will have the possibilty of
losing the individuals Oracle userid and connection is via the app server
(tuxedo) and connection id.

The user when accessing PeopleSoft is only connected to Oracle using their
userid for an extremely brief time so it is really what is set for the
SYSADM account that is key. I have as standard practice set the the default
tablespace and temp tablespace after userids are created. Just being tidy
besides shows up on my monitoring reports.

The entire database on one disk. That isn't the vendor's fault. They state
before installing the database to modify the scripts to specify the
filesystem locations. One disk or a hundred, that is the DBA's
responsibility.

You can certainly move tablespaces, redo logs around as needed. On the other
hand there are things you should be careful with (eg.).

Don't just change the password for SYSADM except via the PeopleSoft security
administration (unless you wanted to be hunted down by users).

Also applies to user accounts.

Moving tables to other tablespaces should first be done via the application
designer tool first which updates the meta-data (peopletools tables).

Objects that maintain PeopleTools meta-data should be first created in App
Designer and then built using the generated SQL script.

I would suggest reading the Administration guide which covers things such as
the DDL Model, security administration etc. Also, the installation guide has
some stuff for tuning (snicker).

A couple of reports available for the application DDDAUDIT SYSAUDIT.

Our environment is very stable.

PeopleSoft HRMS 7.51, PeopleTools 7.58
HP/UX 10.20, Oracle 7.3.4

{Hoping to upgrade to 9i and HP/UX 11i this year}

All batch processing is via Control-M scheduler and not the vendor delivered
program launcher aka process scheduler. All access via external processes
connect using their own userid (O/S authenticated for batch) with explicit
grants. Nobody (clients/developers/support staff) has direct access to
SYSADM except for the DBA's.

Our reporting environment is a hybrid of 3.22, 7.0, 7.51 custom structures
based on PeopleTools 7.58. The environment is populated via SQL Server DTS
(el cheapo ETL)and database links. We have previously used Oracle
Replication (lots of problems on Oracle 7 (maybe it was the 600 snapshots))
but now use custom triggers etc.

If you can dream of it, you can do it. Its just the administration can be a
bit of work until you understand it and have things setup in a fashion that
makes sense for you.

Bp,
Often where the term Senior DBA comes up is with company HR
departments. It isn't usual for we DBAs to greet each other with Hi, I'm a
senior DBA. I agree with Mark's comments, but just wanted to point out
this
other aspect to the issue. Sometimes HR people use this as a method for
categorizing people in terms of making sense out of salaries. HR criteria
may have nothing to do with what you are thinking of. Personally I often
can't understand HR criteria.

Mark ,
Thanks for the reply . I think learning is a never ending process ,
specially in IT industry where new version of software is out before 30%
adapts the previous version .But is there a line which can be drawn ? No
one
knows everything . But experience tells where to look for proper things and
what plannings and cautions to be taken before adapting any change .

 Bp,

All I know is that I'm not a senior DBA. I think you'll know if you
really are or not. Have you worked with clustered databases, different
types of partitioning, different os / io / backup architectures, rman,
fgac, capacity planning, tuning, etc? There's a million things you may
or
may not have had exposure to, and while there isn't a magical number
where
you qualify I think it's where you have experienced a lot.

I've worked with people who have been working with Oracle for ~15 years
and
their understanding of the product, and history of experiences, makes me
 realise how junior I am.

Are you asking because you are considering applying for a job or perhaps
looking for a change to your position description?

Senior isn't an absolute term. A senior DBA in a small development house
could be the guy who knows how to add a tablespace. A senior DBA in a large
company may have to combine a good level of technical ability with a good
deal of management and business skills.

The term also seems to be used to imply a high level of experience and/or
length of service. I have to admit it does sound better than 'old and
cynical'.

Very good point. I know where I work, HR classifies DBA as an analyst for
pay reasons. The Senior DBA position, is more of a management-type role.
More money, more management responsibilities but less actual DBA work.

Definately worth repeating. Its an excellent article. Read it last night.
Hmmm. Maybe I need a life.

Do they even make records anymore? Would the children of today even
understand the reference? I suddenly feel very old. :-)

SQL that does excessively many reads from memory. Trace it. Read Why
you should focus on LIOs instead of PIOs at www.hotsos.com/catalog.

My apologies to the list for repeating myself like a broken record. :)

Re: Question on in-doubt transaction

2002-11-04 Thread David Davis
Check out the documentation for the dbms_transaction package. I have used it
previously (dbms_transaction.purge_lost_db_entry). In my case, the cause was
due to a problem in SQL Server (DTS process).

See Docids on Metalink:

67590.1 - PROCEDURE:DBMS_TRANSACTION.PURGE_LOST_DB_ENTRY
100664.1 - How to Troubleshoot Distributed Transactions

Good Luck.

Subject: Question on in-doubt transaction
Date: Mon, 04 Nov 2002 09:54:14 -0800

Greetings All,

We have a stand alone database on a Windows-NT box. As far as I understand
from the users of this database that this is not in distributed
environment.

But there is one in-doubt transaction in this database and if users try to
work in this database the response is very slow due to this in-doubt
transaction.

We bounced the database. Restarted the service but in-doubt transaction is
still sitting there from Feb 2002.

We could see this transaction in DBA Studio also.

How to clean this transaction?

Thanks,
Ashoke
