I require step by step install instructions for Pet Store1.1.2 on Orion please?

2001-05-22 Thread Ganasen Gounden

Hello

I have installed Orion 1.4.5 on Windows NT successfully.
I now need to install the Petstore 1.1.2 Application.

Could someone please provide me with a step by step guideline.
The existing information is confusing or incomplete or refers to the older version.
I am also new to Orion and J2ee.

My recommendation is that the Orion developers have a working version of the product
bundled into the download
of Orion. It will help me and others save a lot of problems in trying to get a j2ee
sample application running quick and easily.
Please realise that many of us do these downloads for evaluation and demonstration to
our management. It is very disappointing when we have to battle in doing this.

I have had a bash at Jboss, Enhydra, In-q-my, Oracle 9ias, Jrun, and now Orion. They
all have similar challenges in getting Pet Store up and running.
I
do not mean to be a nag but many thanks in advance if you can help.

Thanks,

If I replace it with the original wrapper, I get:

However I just noticed that I am running 1.3.0, whereas someone else in the

now downloading 1.3.1. I hope this works.
Only the downloading doesn't goes that fast ;(

part
 I do get the following:

Did max-instances solve the problem? Anyway, in some applications on
  Linux/Unix you have to change

  #DEFAULT_THREADS_FLAG=green to:
  DEFAULT_THREADS_FLAG=native

in two places relative to JAVA_HOME: ./bin/.java_wrapper and
  jre/bin/.java_wrapper.

- Whenever I call this method from outside the ejb (I added that method to

RE: Upgrading from 1.3.8 to 1.4.5 - (de-)serializing errors

2001-05-22 Thread Jonas Lundberg

We solved
these problems today. It came out that the class that failed was the ResultSet
(but with obfuscated name) of the database driver. This class was not
serializable, and the upgrade from 1.3.8 to 1.4.5 probably separated our beans
into separate VMs, thus requiring Orion to serialize the ResultSet object.

To solve
this we wrote our own container for the result data (using Vectors containing
Hashtables).

  1.4.5 - (de-)serializing errors
  We have
encountered some serious problems when upgrading from Orion 1.3.8 to 1.4.5.

  The
problems occurs when our business layer is about to return data to the
presentation layer. The data is fetched in the datalayer via a callable
statement. The callable statement and the connection is closed in the
  data-layer-EJB.

  The
business-layer-EJB removes the data-layer-EJB after it has retrieved a
ResultSet from it. The business-data-layer then returns data extracted from
the ResultSet or sometimes just data from the ResultSet.

  It still
works perfectly fine to use methods that submit data but not returns anything
from the data layer. But after the upgrade, the methods that return data is
  failing.

  The
  reported error is as following:
  [Mon May
  21 12:41:54 GMT+02:00 2001]: Error in getPoll, BlPollBean.

  It seems
like Orion tries to de-serialize com.inet.tds.d, but why? On the same
installation other implementations run using the same com.inet.tds
  provider.

  I
saw some problems on this list earlier describing these kind of problems, but
that was regarding fields that needed to be "transient". We have no such
"stateful fields", so we don't think that has something to do with these
  problems that we encounter.

No exclusive-write generation in the orion-ejb-jar.xml deployment ???

2001-05-22 Thread Eddie

Hi there,

I am still using 1.4.7 as I have problems updating to 1.5.0.
I noticed the following:
I added the attribute exclusive-write-access to my orion-ejb-jar.xml (see
below) and it doesn't appear in the deployed orion-ejb-jar.xml ???

The line in the orion-ejb-jar.xml in my application:

  entity-deployment name=nl.unwired.sgs.vwr.Usr
location=nl.unwired.sgs.vwr.Usr wrapper=UsrHome_EntityHomeWrapper13
table=vwrusr data-source=jdbc/postgresEJBDS
exclusive-write-access=true max-instances=10

In the generated orion-ejb-jar.xml file:

  entity-deployment name=nl.unwired.sgs.vwr.Usr
location=nl.unwired.sgs.vwr.Usr wrapper=UsrHome_EntityHomeWrapper13
table=vwrusr data-source=jdbc/postgresEJBDS

BTW:
- I also noticed that I doesn't copy the max-instances=10 line for every
entity bean (for most of them it does). Hoever the exclusiv-write line is
never copied.

I think this worked in the past... but have no idea what happened/changed.
Anyone any idea what the logic is behind ths generation ???

Eddie
PS: The above it quite irritating as I was used to copy the deployed
orion-ejb.jar.xml back to my application dir to add customized finders as
described on the orionsupport.com site.

When I do a download from Orionserver, I get 1.4.5zip for stable and

Re: I require step by step install instructions for Pet Store 1.1.2 on Orion please?

2001-05-22 Thread Mark Kettner

I'll get you started, but I'm working on linux so perhaps I make an
error somewhere

1) Download and install java SDK
2) Download and install java J2EE
3) SET JAVA_HOME=path to java directory. e.g. c:\jdk1.3.1
4) SET J2EE_HOME=path to j2ee directory, e.g. c:\j2sdkee1.2.1
(or put these two veriables in the system properties somewhere)
5) Go to the jps1.1.2 components directory and type `build'. This builds
the EJB's
6) Go to the jps1.1.2 petstore directory and type `build'. This creates
an ear in the ..\build directory that
also contains all the EJB beans build in step 5.
7) copy this ear file to the orion\applications directory
8) Edit file orion\config\server.xml (below the line starting with
global-application...
   application name=petstore path=../applications/petstore.ear /
9) Edit file orion\config\default-web-site.xml (below the line starting
with default-web-app ...
   web-app application=petstore name=petstore root=/petstore /
10) start orion (in the orion directory type java -jar orion.jar). You
should now see something with
   deploying petstore application, petstoreEjb, etc.
11) Open web browser and type http://localhost:80/petstore and you are
in business.

I had the same problem and somebody else on this list helped me. Perhaps
it's a good idea to update the website, so you can download the latest
version directly from the website?

The solution to your problem is to go to the irion directory and type
java -jar autoupdate.jar

and automagically you'll be updated to the latest version

Re: finderException in home interface of CMP ??

2001-05-22 Thread Joni Suominen

In theory a multi-object finder can throw an exception, at least when
using BMP. This is possible for instance when a multi-object finder
calls a single-object finder. I am not sure if it would be a good
programming practise to let this FinderException to go unchecked to a
caller though.

Neither does Orion complain when you leave out the FinderException!
Or are there other situations when a FinderExceptions can occur in case of a

No. Every finder method should declare that it throws FinderException.

In the home interface you should declare all the fonder methods to throw

RE: SSL Question: Possibly Offtopic

2001-05-22 Thread Smith Jason

You might be able to use a SSL terminator.

In this case, a seperate machine acts as a proxy to your sites and handles
SSL for you. The ssl load is handled by the proxy machine and your web
servers are somewhat protected.

This is commonly used when you want to use SSL, and you still want your
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to be able to read the traffic. SSL between
the client and terminator, clear text between the terminator - IDS - web
server.

You MIGHT be able to use the tunnel servlet and ssl to do this.

Is it possible to set up two different sites using Orion with only 1 IP
address, and set up SSL for each of them. I didn't have any problems
setting up the two non-secure virtual hosts, but when I tried to setup
up SSL virtual hosts, I couldn't get the server to send the right
Certificates.

Is this even possible?

Is there some SSL limitation that only allows 1 Certificate per IP
address?

RE: PetStore - Session State in a Cluster

2001-05-22 Thread Juan Lorandi (Chile)

FACT: Orion's HTTP clustering won't work unless the web site is
default-web-site.

also, session replication in orion(at least, 1.4.7, which is the version
I've used) does survive well server crashes, but not server restarts. I'll
explain

Environment with a redirector (R) and two orion boxes (A B)

session values are replicated.

server B goes down

server A performs (session values are used)

server B goes live again

sessions on server A aren't replicated in server B. However, any attributes
set in A(setAttribute() ), will be replicated to B in realtime.

So, there's an amount of time, when crashed servers go back online, in which
they have partial or no session status replication. This is observable when
using any tipe of redirector, either software(LoadBalancer) or
hardware(Cisco Redirector, Foundry Iron). This could be solved(not easily
tough) with a synchronization instance in which server B should get a the
bulk of all session state in server A, then proceed normally.

Along this line, but diverting, the logged user is replicated only when the
user logs in, so sessions in B after the restart have no identity
information, which will eventually trigger a login page to be displayed.
These issues tend to get worse as the island size(box count) increases.

Orion does have a HTTPSessionManager interface exposed as public. It allows
Orion to implement a 'normal' HTTPSession and a ClusteredHTTPSession
transparently, and is used internally when some attributes are on appropiate
xml files (ref: cluster/); I'd wish there was a tag on
orion-application.xml that could allow a personalized class which implements
HTTPSessionManager to be used, a la UserManager, so some of these problems
(and others that arise with mixed sites that use non secure and secure
portions) could be worked around without giving up many of orion's session
managing abilities(URL rewriting, Management of sessions with the console
and so on)

My 2c,

JP

PS: I'm forwarding this to Karl to be entered in the wishlist.

Subject: RE: PetStore - Session State in a Cluster

My guess is you stumbled upon a mismatch between the servlet and jsp
specifications: a container needs some way to decide when to
 replicate a
session to a cluster. In Orion and Weblogic this is done when
session.setAttribute() is called. This works fine for things like the
 SessionServlet.

 In jsp's with the jsp:useBean ... scope=session tag,
 setAttribute is
only called upon creation of the bean class. Modifications to
 the session
state are done through calls on the bean class. This doesn't
 trigger session
replication because the container doesn't know about the change.

 Marcel

  Hi,

I have the (J2EE Blueprint) PetStore application clustered on
  two Orion
instances running on the same machine.

When I connect through the LoadBalancer, I can see my session
  state get
replicated across the two nodes. When I kill the primary
  node, the load
balancer automatically connects me to the secondary node
 and takes me
through the rest of the shopping cart experience, however any
  items I had in
my cart (ie. Session state!) aren't there anymore.

I know that for clustering to work, objects should be
  Serializable AND
placed in the session/servlet context for it to be
  replicated. So my *real*
  questions are:

  1) I haven't dived into the PetStore code - but is this a
  design issue with
the PetStore or do I need some configuration pointers?

  2) Has ANYBODY got PetStore working properly in a Clustered
  environment
where you can kill the primary server and continue shopping
  (with your
existing cart) on the secondary node?

  My Environment:Win2K, JDK 1.3, PetStore 1.1.2, Orion 1.4.5

NB: The SessionServlet example works FINE for me. When the
  primary goes
down, the secondary node picks up with the same counter
  number as before the
  failure.
