Title: Re: PUPPS

Hi Sonya

I was a doula, recently,  for a woman who had PUPPS. Her symptoms were particularly bad in the last few weeks of pregnancy and she had the baby 10 days before "due date". Her rashes, blotches and itchiness diminished after the birth ( but she was taking medication too) and were almost gone at 3 weeks after birth. Not one week. This was her second child.

Cheers Margie

Thanks everyone for your replies.
All my lady's liver function tests have come back normal, however she had a haemoglobin test that went from 112 in one week to 90 the next.  Don't know if this is related or not.  I have asked all the senior midwives and doctors about PUPPS and all have said that it spontaneously resolves within a week after the birth and that it affects first time mothers only.  They have all been unable to direct me towards any literature on the subject like what is the cause.
Thanks again
Sonja

PUPPS

2002-05-30 Thread Barry MacGregor

Dear all!
I vaguely remember some information on this site previously on PUPPS.
As a student midwife, I have a lady on which I am conducting a longitudinal
study - following her through her clinic visits, labour and post partum.
However, now in her 37th week she has PUPPS.  The doctors want to induce
her, which she is happy about as it will stop the itching.  However, I am
wondering if anyone has any info this condition, like remedies for the itches,
and why it occurs.  Can't find anything in the textbooks!!
Thanks in anticipation
Sonja

Oh! I heard on the grapevine that Nepean's birth centre was stopped due to
lack of staff and clients.

Now just a strange thing I heard today that may be related and may be
a link - a guy I was talking to said that his wife during her second
pregnancy had a skin condition that made her itch and her skin peeled
badly - he said her teeth got bad and 'they' pulled them all out!
  Bit drastic!  And
then they traced it to a problem with her spleen???
It sounded strange to me but he said it almost killed her.
She must have been quite ill with it and the pregnancy triggered it in
  some way.
Hope this is of some help or interest!

  Rhonda.

Something like Puerperal Urticaria of Pregnancy...
In other words a symptom of Obstetric Cholestasis, I found a website that
would be useful, next time I'm at work! I'll post it if no-one else has.

Re: PUPPS

2002-03-04 Thread maxine hardinge

My apologies to the list - PUPPs stands for Pruritic Urticarial Pustules and
Papules of pregnancy. From what I understand it is a skin condition only
and not something more sinister (my friend has had liver function and
biochemistry to exclude cholestasis and all results have come back normal).
It is however causing her unbearable itching and stress - lack of sleep
compounding the discomfort and wearing her down. She is 32 weeks but
already asking for induction (the itching usually subsides once the baby is
born). I have a feeling that for her, it is related to her worries about
being at home with two small children - feeling isolated and with no family
support and few friends. We have talked about hypnosis as a way of managing
the itching and to help her get some sleep and she is keen to give it a go
but neither of us know where to start looking. She is in Melbourne.
I'm really hoping someone on the list can help.
Regards, Maxine

Re: PUPPS

2002-03-04 Thread Kleimar

Yes, I agree with the previous definitions (but can never remember them all)
I think the essential thing to remember is that the pruritis/severe itching
can also be a symptom of choleostasis and so liver involvement should be
ruled out. Once liver involvement is ruled out it appears that PUPPS is
essentially a benign condition with extremely irritating symptoms. If
antihistamines work, then the woman is lucky and she should get what relief
she can, I personally haven't seen mum's get much releif until the the
condition itself passes. marilyn

PUPPS

2002-03-04 Thread Kirsten Blacker

I can't remember exactly what the initials stand for,but it's essentially
severe itching in pregnancy - the U is for Urticaria it think.
The thing that bugs me here is that they give benadryl for it postpartum
which I don't like becaus it's an antihistamine and can affect early
lactation.
Also, anyone with severe itching in pregnancy should be also assess for
Intrahepatic Cholestasis of pregnancy because of the possible poor fetal
outcomes

From my limited understanding, it is an
itching condition of pregnancy.  It stands for something like pruritic
urticarial papules and plagues.  I knew I had heard of it and I've looked
it up in one of my many books - found something about it in Deborah Cooper's
book "Your Baby, Your Way".

In it she recommends:
- applying 100% jojoba oil
- applying chickweed or nettle
ointment
 dandelion beverages instead of
coffee
- a glass of beetroot, celery and carrot juice per
day

PUPPS

2002-03-02 Thread maxine hardinge

Hi everyone,
I am asking for a friend of mine who is about 32 weeks (2nd baby, no probs
first time) who has a severe case of PUPPS. All blood tests have been
normal but she is almost suicidal with itching/scratching especially at
night - only getting a couple of hours sleep. She hasn't had any relief
from the medication ordered, and is wiling to try anything - I suggested
hypnosis which she is keen to try but neither of us know anyone in Melb.
She also thought of asking her TCM Dr about acupuncture.
Any suggestions would be great.
