RE: Site Collection Admin - use group

2009-09-22 Thread Paul Noone
Hi Adam,

We want to use a group for precisely the reasons you specified.

* It can be managed from AD

* It allows for more than two SCAs

* We don't want to assign individuals at the site level every time.
What a pain!
Sadly, just like site member groups, MOSS seems to love the idea of users over
groups. :\

I did actually think of a simple enough solution to this. Just make a copy of
the current page and change the field to people and groups.

Hey Paul,
I don't have a solution, more just a question of use... Are you
looking at this function to give the SCA to a group of people (more than two
obviously) or just to make changing the SCA person easier though AD management?

My thinking is that it is always better to have less SCA's than more as it can
limit your legal liability for individuals on your SharePoint environment.

Cheers

As far as I know there isn't a way to use any sort of group for this, which
sucks - They have a SharePoint group in CA for Farm Administrators (and I'm
pretty sure you can put AD groups in there) but for site collection admin you
have to select only specific people without the use of groups, that's a bit of

2009-09-22 Thread Brian Farnhill
I'm not sure that would work, but certainly worth a shot though

If you want to assign more than 2 SCA's though you can do this at the site
settings pages rather than through CA. Just sign in to the site as a SCA and
you will see Site Collection Administrators as an option under people and
groups, that page has a people picker (still limited to people only) but you
can put as many in there as you like. Not sure why the CA site does it
differently because there is no difference.

It is still a pain having to manage it for individual users though!

SQL permissions

2009-09-22 Thread Paul Noone
Hi all,

Our sysadmin has become very strict about permissions and service account usage
in our new farm. And fair enough to.

The problem is that currently I can create content databases via CA but then
lack rights to do anything with it (i.e. restore operation) until I'm
explicitly given access.

He reckons he can't see a way around this as the setup user is always given
owner rights to the DB.

Does anyone have a workable solution that will allow me to automatically have
appropriate permissions to all content DBs without having to rely on his
interaction? Is there a 'best practice' around this?

It seems nuts that I can create a database, trash any content via code and
delete site collections - but am unable to perform a simple restore task!

I am pretty sure that a restore operation requires a specific SQL permission
outside of the DB permissions i.e. it is a server wide thing and not specific

Dynamic List filter/query question

2009-09-22 Thread CARR, Matthew
All, before I delve into the deep end trying to solve a list view query/search
issue I seek guidance on the best practice method or reference articles that
will help me resolve the dilemma I define below.

I have an Infopath form library (defined as a content type) in which the
majority of form metadata is defined as columns items in the form library,
approximately 25 columns. The information architecture approach ( and to
mitigate the 2000 limit) will be to archive forms off to sub folders which are
to be searchable.

The user will like to dynamically query/filter all rolled-up lists on only a
subset of columns (approx 7 of the 25) - similar to a traditional
search/results type of interface. What is the best way to facilitate this in
SharePoint ? I have installed the bamboo list roll up web part and created list
views but neither seem to allow me to dynamically set the filter critieria on
only a subset of columns.
Some options I thought of include:

1) Data View WebPart (I believe you can associated multiple datasources
(ie libraries) as the source data reference )

2) Content Query Web Part

3) 3rd part controls - ie Bamboo list rollup or others

4) Connected WebParts to (can you have multiple filter web parts connected
to a list view?)

5) Reporting Services report - how do you rollup the multiple datasources

6) Asp.Net control

7) SharePoint Search - I have excluded this list from being searched since
am treating the form as a LOB application
The premise of the design is to empower a subset of Power Business users to
maintain the system so the intent is to keep the solution and underlying
datasources non-complex. The user would also like to output to excel on the
list view results also

Cheers
Matt

Can anyone advise how to get this missing service back?

Setting the outer div is unlikely to fix your current problem. For horizontal
scroll bars to be displaying there must be something wide enough to exceed your
screen width. Either that or you've set container:auto-scroll on one of your
divs.

1280px is more than wide enough for any site. Can you give us a URL?

There's a few CSS tools out there that make the job of applying and testing CSS
changes much simpler. Here's a link to a random one that might be helpful:

Is this a custom master page or OOTB master pages? You can always set the page
body width via css or set the width for the outer div container in custom

This can be an easy or hard task depending on how you want to deal with it.

Paul, I think Marko wants to fit all content in 1280 and not showing the
horizontal scroll bar, this can be done by setting the outer div width
to 1280 and overflow to hidden? Of course he needs to make sure all
content can fit into 1280 and not got cut out.

OK the div width didn't work, but I didn't have any auto-scrolls set either.
I did however find this: BODY scroll=yes onload=javascr

And if I change it to NO, I cant scroll at all! :) Is there a way to lock
horizontal scrolling without locking the vertical one?

Scroll parameter on the body tag is IE-only and not standards-compliant. It's
both useless and redundant. Just remove it.

That should get rid of the scroll bar display. You're now saying you can't
vertically scroll? In which case something ELSE is now causing this behaviour.

Where id your master page base come from? And the CSS?

There are plenty of free master page samples out there that do work. Maybe
start with one of those? Or try customing one of the OOTB pages - like the
super-sensational BlueBand master? ;)

OK the div width didn't work, but I didn't have any auto-scrolls set either.
I did however find this: BODY scroll=yes onload=javascr

And if I change it to NO, I cant scroll at all! :) Is there a way to lock
horizontal scrolling without locking the vertical one?

Marko

Setting the outer div is unlikely to fix your current problem. For horizontal
scroll bars to be displaying there must be something wide enough to exceed your
screen width. Either that or you've set container:auto-scroll on one of your
divs.

1280px is more than wide enough for any site. Can you give us a URL?

body width via css or set the width for the outer div container in custom

This can be an easy or hard task depending on how you want to deal with it.

Sorry I know this might be a silly question, however, I take it that your
monitor resolution is higher than 1280?

And as an operational consideration, are your users using resolutions above the
1280 horizontal range?

And I was just about to link the CSS Reference chart, that is a great resource

Subject: Get rid off the hor. scroll bar

Hi All

I am trying to fit everything in a 1280 wide window so that the horizontal
scroll bar doesn't show up.
I have looked into the .master we use, but that doesn't seem to define a width
anywhere. I have also tried
looking elsewhere but I have no idea how to this. It's a noob

Net 3.5 on MOSS 64-bit

2009-09-22 Thread Paul Noone
Can anyone please tell me what, if any, manual changes I need to make after a
3.5 framework upgrade?

There seem to be no end of issues surrounding this but I'm still not convinced
I actually need to do anything beyond the installation.

RE: Net 3.5 on MOSS 64-bit [SEC=UNOFFICIAL]

2009-09-22 Thread Noja, Fadi
You shouldn't if you used a vanilla windows server. However, I have
seen to places (here included) where the windows image doesn't give the
proper permission to the temp directory (the framework temp directory
that is). So after fixing the permission and re-registering the
framework to iis(aspnet_regiis.exe -i), it worked fine.
