Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello Mimi and others,
I was wondering, what is the XM boombox like? Do you find it easy to use?
What are some things you like about it, and things you don't like about it?
I don't think the boombox will work for me, because of where I live. I
tried the XM PCR and it did not work. I couldn't ever get a signal.
I live in an apartment building, that has a lot of metal in it. And also,
neither of my two windows face South. They face East, and there are
buildings in front of both of them.
However, I'm still interested in knowing what this boombox is like.
The one thing I like about the XM PCR, is that you are able to know what is
playing, and I know that's something you cant do with the boombox.
Thank you,
Terri

Well, if you couldn't get the PCR to work then most likely it will be the

I agree, I have had no trouble working with the XMPCR software out of the
box with Windoweyes. You have to use the mouse pointer, but it works VERY
WELL with Window-eyes.

Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Tim,
You mentioned having used Replace PCR or whatever it was called. Just
wondered whether you use JAWS or WindowEyes, since some people have
suggested that JAWS does not read this display as easily.

I'm still not sure whether to go with the PCR or to get the boombocx and the
car adapter kit so the whole family can have access, and will probably have
to decide one or the other for budgetary reasons. Can anyone with the
boombox comment on its accessibility in terms of activation, channel
selection, and presets? Not having yet seen one of these critters or had
sighted help to describe what's on the website, I'm fuzzy about dimensions
and controls etc.--did someone say that there is a remote control that has
to be used to change functions or did I misunderstand. Also, since I'm not
sure whether our car radio is XM ready, I couldn't tell from the site
whether or not I need an FM modulator in order to continue to listen to
regular radio stations or whether this is essentially something that plugs
into a cigarette lighter or some such to allow the boombox to play in the
car, hope this makes sense. I realize how technically clueless I sound
here, smile, but any answers I get from you all mean questions I don't have
to ask their tech support folks. Again, thanks for helping me to understand
this.

Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Gary,
Thanks for that, smile. Actually my son just mentioned that a friend of his
is using XM quite well with the setup I described of the boombox and car
kit, so I'm thinking of getting in touch with him. Seems like the consensus
is with XM and I like what I have heard of their program content, so
hopefully their customer support will also be good.

what is activeX

2004-07-17 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Hi all,
Can someone explain what activeX controls actually are? I ran into a
problem last week which may or may not have been the result of having
installed Spywear Blaster, which apparently disables ActiveX controls unless
you uncheck this option and do it manually. The result was that my
soundcard began to act weird, I lost some Windows sounds as a result to some
change in the registry and it suddenly began to act as a single-channel card
and would not allow me to use the Ivocalize chat client, coming up with an
error saying I did not have activeX when I was pretty sure I did. Anyway, I
uninstalled the program and did a restorewhich solved the problem, but of
course this made me curious as to what activeX is and what if anything this
has to do with my sounds. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread mimi
The boombox is a streamlined system with
its own speakers. They cannot be spread
apart, though. But for the sake of
portability it is great. The XM
receiver snaps into the cradle in
between the speakers and you can use the
remote that came with the home kit. In
the boombox, the up and down station
select becomes the volume control.
There is a volume control knob on the
boombox itself. There is an earphone
jack. Sorry, no line-ins or outs. If
you wanted to record from it, you would
have to amplify it through another
amplifier and crank it up quite high. It
uses six D batteries. Good when the
power is out. I don't really know how
long they last. Downside, the adapter
for the boombox is bulky and heavy,
heavier than the one for the home kit.
It plugs into a jack on the boombox
behind the left speaker. The antenna
wire can be wrapped around posts inside
the boombox just behind the battery
compartment and one of the posts is
hollow and has a connection for the
antenna. The rest of the antenna device
is snapped onto the back of the boombox
and held snugly in place. The handle is
recessed, great for people with small
hands to grab but a nuisance for someone
with large hands. Sounds great, not too
bassy and simple to operate. It does
not matter where you put the boombox,
the signal comes through fine. I guess
I have big windows at my place even
though they face west. Reception is
wonderful. I know everybody insists on
that south-facing window. Perhaps where
there is too much metal, tree cover, and
the like, and other obstructions,
satellite radio canot function. I
learned that the hard way when I was in
a place with lots of tree cover. Since
my sighted friends do not have satellite
radio or dish, even, they could not tell
me that.

Great. I use 128 kbps when doing music
programs, and 32 for oldtime radio
shows. All my mp3's from XM programming
sounds great.

Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread mimi
Sorry visually impaired people cannot
read the display on boombox. But,
accessing the channels with the remote
or tuner dial is easy. Setting up
presets is easy without vision: You just
go to Bank A or B with the press of the
Preset button on XM's Remote, which is
the leftmost button of a group of 3
above the numbers pad, select the
stations you want and press the number
on the keypad and hold it in until it is
set. You will know that when the
station stops for a split second then
comes back in as the preset is being
accepted. Release that number button
and that's it. You can not use the
presets in direct entry mode, you must
be in preset mode to go from one preset
to another. Have I confused you enough?

Not knowing what your car is like does
not give me an idea. If you do not have
a satellite radio ready car, you can buy
a hub adapter for the XM receiver and
have it installed. I don't know about
the car cigarette lighter; never used
it. But then, I don't have anyone who
drives and I don't know anyone with a
car. But someone else might know.

I appreciated your comparison. What I don't know yet, does one have direct

Re: XM Radio

2004-07-17 Thread Gary G. Schindler

Susan, if you buy the Delphi receivers, you have the choice of a car kit, which comes
with a cassette adapter, or you can buy an fm modulator sold separately the boom box
or the home kit. the roady is smaller, also made buy Delphi. they were offering an fm
modulator with it free for a while, but that promo is probably over. you get power
from the cigarette lighter plug.

Not having yet seen one of these critters or had
sighted help to describe what's on the website, I'm fuzzy about dimensions

sure whether our car radio is XM ready, I couldn't tell from the site
whether or not I need an FM modulator in order to continue to listen to
regular radio stations or whether this is essentially something that plugs
into a cigarette lighter or some such to allow the boombox to play in the
car, hope this makes sense. I realize how technically clueless I sound

RE: cordless headphones

2004-07-17 Thread rinty
Hi all, I'll put a bid in here, as I've just got a pair of AKGk105's.
They're £30 from Tapesense in the UK. The normal retail is about £60.
They're perfectly good enough for computer use, and aren't too bad for
hifi use, though they're a bit bass light, an advantage me thinks for
speech use. This with a cordless keyboard allows me to listen to
books in bed, with the computer in the dining room.

I got an extra antenna with the boombox,
same kind that came with the receiver I
bought in NOvember, so put it away in
case I need to replace the one I am
using now.

RE: Sirius Radio and XM; what I like

2004-07-17 Thread Mister Lynn White
I appreciated your reviews with the touch of personality involved even
if we don't agree politically. But, your review was sensitive,
thoughtful and very well explained.

I have XM but will not take a look at Sirious. I think I know the
answer based on what you said. But, does Sirious have any black gospel
music stations?

Subject: Sirius Radio and XM; what I like

Hello, everyone!

Well, I've had my Sirius on since around
12:30 pm Pacific Time yesterday. Here
are some of my observations:

I like both services; XM continues to be
my favorite and top choice. I'll keep
'em both after all.

XM: Radio Classics has a host and I like
the information he gives about the shows
and the actors, actresses, whether or
not they are still with us. I exchange
anemail with him from time to time.
He's nice. Wish they would not
interrupt the shows, but what can you
do? More otr on XM while Sirius runs
the same few shows every couple of
hours; they don't split the shows in
half, but run a commercial or two and
play a piece or two of music in between
their lineup of otr; no host on Retro
Radio, as Sirius calls their channel.
(Can't use the same names for the
channels, I guess because of copyright
reason.)

XM: More Decades than Sirius
Sirius: Sirius Gold, 60's Vibrations,
Totally 70's, Big 80's, The Pulse
grouped together. There is an Elvis
channel that plays everything Elvis
Presley ever recorded and it is the
official station of Graceland.

XM: There is only one religious channel
Family Talk, and two christian music
channels, The Fish and Spirit.

Sirius: Spirit, Praise, Wisdom, EWTN,
Word are represented and there are a
couple more religious channels which are
hispanic.

XM: SonicTheater
Sirius: No modern radio drama or books
there

XM and Sirius:
Talk radio left, right and center

Sirius: NPR and NPR talk; Court TV Radio
Plus; Out Q for gays, lesbians, and
other folks (if you're supersensitive to
this, avoid that channel if you don't
have an open mind.)

XM and Sirius:
XM: The Joint plays reggae music all the
time
Sirius: Reggae Rhythms

Both have different types of rock
channels including alternative, hiphop
and hard to heavy metal

Sirius: Hair nation, 80's hair bands (I
don't know what that is. It's a strange
name for music.)

XM and Sirius: Easy listening, love
songs and mellow

XM and Sirius:
XM The Village, folk music
Sirius: Folk Town

Both have blues and bluegrass

Both have commercial-free music
channels.

XM: On Broadway
Sirius: Brodway's Best

The classical music channels are grouped
together on both services.

Sound quality between the two:
Excellent.

Comment on receiver look and feel:
XM is smaller and lighter; uses bulky
heavy box adapter for boombox accessory,
bigger and heavier than the one for the
home kit; really cumbersome.

Sirius: Home kit is chunkier, slightly
larger and receiver is chunky and
antenna feels a bit thicker and a little
heavier than the XM.

Sirius: Runs on regular 3-prong plug
connected to a power supply which comes
with the unit.

Inaccessible features:
As far as visually impaired:
Screen readout; clock, timer, (sleep
timer); have not played with presets yet
on Sirius unit. Might later by
accident, who knows?

Comment: detented tuning knob

Each station is a click on the dial.

Sirius: Very audible pop when turning on
or off. Probably nothing to it, just
letting you know it's working.

XM: Less audible pop when turned on but
that's normal.

Remote control: Sirius is chunky and the
numbers are arranged with the 0 between
the power and mute buttons at the very
top of remote. Why I don't know!
Channel up and down triangle; Enter
button in the middle, left and right
triangle don't do anything we can tell
without vision.

Sirius remote runs on 2 AAA batteries.

Additonal comment: Like the Vacation
channel. It's different.

Swing Street and standards are
excellent; I still love Frank's Place
and my other favorites on XM.

Both have their good advantages.

Sirius: Weather channels east, west and
central; traffic channels are much
clearer than XM's traffic channels,
which are very fuzzy and lousy!

Sirius offers a lifetime membership for
$1200. (I haven't got that kind of
money, honey! I opted for a one-year
service deal.)

Anyway, will have the two side by side
and will be going back and forth between
the two in listening and checking out
things.

Oh, yeah! Hilly Rose and Doug Stephan
are on Sirius, but not on XM.

Rush Limbaugh (I hate him!) is on
Sirius. Rusty Humphries is on both XM
and Sirius. (I used to listen to him in
Reno, but don't like him anymore. I
like the left channels better. But hey,
that's me. Everybody has their own
preferences. That's all there is to
that.)

Well, there you go. Have I confused you
thoroughly?

Good morning!

Oh, there is Crackup and Raw Dog; XM has
Laughs USA and that ot

Re: Sirius Radio and XM; what I like

2004-07-17 Thread mimi
I really don't know if they have black
gospel, but I do know they have 2
Christian music stations, Spirit and
Praise, and EWTN (Global Catholic
Radio), Word Network, and Wisdom Radio.
(I don't think that's completely
religious, as Wisdom Radio have some
programming dealing with holistic
health, or something like that. I'd
have to listen more before saying more
about this one. One program I did
discover is Beyond Organic. It's
different.) There is a blues station
and XM also has a blues station. I wish
I knew if there is any black gospel
music anywhere. Sorry.

I try my best to be sensitive in my
review. Having my feelings ignored in
relationships really taught me that not
everyone is out for your best interest;
only their own. That's been my
experience.

If someone does not like me being
outspoken all I can say is move on!

Further exploration of Sirius programming

2004-07-17 Thread mimi
Hello, All.

I am sure as time goes on, I will
eventually find out more as I explore
Sirius programming further in between
all the hectic stuff going on right now.
I'm moving July 24 to a new place, so,
as you can understand, everything is
upside down and confusing at this time.
Once I'm settled in, will be able to
relax and write down more observations
of the service as I go along. And, if
anyone is interested I will share what I
foudn.

Been listening to some of the music on
Sirius's Vacation channel. Quite
intriguing. I heard some steel drum
music and a bit of Hawaiian music and
there is a piece of music from Trinidad,
I think, (don't know for sure) called
"Pass the Duchy." Noticed that quite a
bit of other exotic music is played on
Siriu's Horizon, their world music
channel next door to Vacation. Hmm.

2004-07-17 Thread Mister Lynn White
Hi Mimi!

Well, that's all right. I really enjoyed the side by side comparison.
Are the sports networks identical on each? I have heard that the NPR
stuff on Sirious is not that great. Can you talk more about that?

Thanks in advance.

I really don't know if they have black
gospel, but I do know they have 2
Christian music stations, Spirit and
Praise, and EWTN (Global Catholic
Radio), Word Network, and Wisdom Radio.
(I don't think that's completely
religious, as Wisdom Radio have some
programming dealing with holistic
health, or something like that. I'd
have to listen more before saying more
about this one. One program I did
discover is Beyond Organic. It's
different.) There is a blues station
and XM also has a blues station. I wish
I knew if there is any black gospel
music anywhere. Sorry.

Mimi,
Don't know whether you are familiar with Blueman Group, they are basically
three guys who have done unusual things with percussion, I guess it would be
jazz but it kind of crosses over genres. My son is a drummer and has kind
of turned me onto them. Anyway, I wonder whether either service plays them.
Amazing how this topic has stayed alive this long, isn't it?

Gary,
Okay, that makes it a bit clearer. My sighted son is pretty technical so if
the time comes I'm sure he can plow through the PDF files and sort out what
we actually need to do. There wasa limited time offer of some kind on their
catalogue page but I'm probably not going to make any purchase until closer
to Christmas, have run out of mad money for the moment, so will see what
happens. In the meantime this is all pretty exciting.

Never heard of this group. What station
would play their music? Progressive
jazz or something similar?

Wow! Yeah, this topic has a life of its
own these days! Usually topics come and
go like crazy, don't they? What's next?

2004-07-17 Thread mimi
I'm not a sports person, but there is
ESPN and ESPN News and Play by Play 1
and 2, 8 channels for sports.

The NPR feed has Car Talk on Saturday
mornings, and I have not really listened
to it extensively, but it's odd
listening without the local station
announcer breaking in and stuff. It's
going to take me some time to get to
that.

I enjoy comparing things side by side if
I can. I don't get to do this very
often. Kind of fun, especially when it's
something I really love and enjoy, like
radio.

There is also a PRI channel on Sirius.
Have to check it out more.

Oh, that is so cool. I love radio as well. Love it to the max. The
PRI channel could definitely be worth exploring.

If you haven't installed the ChatterBox Scripts Since July Seventeenth

you're in for a treat. Many new features have been added. Many of the

Be sure to look carefully at the Shift F1, (JAWS ChatterBox Script

overview
of all the features in the scripts. Also, be sure to look at the What's
New
page for all the changes since the last version.

Some of the new features added by Doug Lee include:

New behaviour when you press the Escape key: Thanks Mario.

Pressing Insert F3 will bring up a User List window containing the list
of
members in a room. You can then use your arrow keys to read the list at
your
leisure. Press Escape when you're finished reading a list to leave the
User

Press Alt F5 to hear when you entered the room and the current time:

We have also made other minor improvements and bug fixes.

Again be sure to read about all the script features and ChatterBox keys
in
the Shift F1 JAWS ChatterBox Help.

You can read about the new features by going to:

If you would rather skip this great information, (grin) you can go
directly
to the script page to download the July Seventeenth scripts by going
