Replay A/V and Sirius Online

2007-03-02 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi all, I recently subscribed to Sirius Online now that they stream CNN. Has
anyone actually made a successful recording off Sirius using Replay A/V?
When I enter the info correctly, including the channel number and my Sirius
username and password, if I select the option to tune to the station, the
Replay Tuner pops up with the Sirius Online log-in page. Based on the clicks
I hear from IE, it sounds like Replay A/V is trying to log me in, however,
on this page it is also showing the visual capture box, so I don't quite see
how Replay A/V can get past this screen. I am simply returned to the log-in
page, which the Tuner never gets past. For me then, this feature seems
broken. Has anyone got this to work?

The Sirius site itself is very easy to use, but it would be handy to be able
to record sometimes.

Jonathan

John,
BTW, my nbame is Dana, NOT Donna.

As I mentioned, the URLs appeared immediately *above* their respective
stream names. I know that is confusing, but that is how they are organized
in winamp.bm, from which I copied and pasted them. The entire string above
each stream name, up to, at least, the first question mark, needs to be
plugged into Winamp's location bar. If you still have trouble with this, go
to my Media page:
http://members.cox.net/dsleslie2/media.shtml,

I believe these streams will only play in Winamp. You aren't trying to play

Good luck.

total recorder question

2007-03-02 Thread Sunshine
I have the latest version of total recorder, and i am having a strange
problem that i do not know what is going on
Using windows xp home 512 ddr ram, a sound blaster audigy 4 pro i believe
the sound card is
First of all i had replay av in and tried the program out i uninstalled the
program, and went back to use total recorder but i found this to be strange
and need some help if at all posible?
i can record with the program but when wanting to play the file back in
total recorder 6.1 i either get a crackling or no play back at all; so i
just recorded a bit from the line in and then from a radio station that i
wanted to record in software mode and saved the files they play just fine
when i have them saved but i can not play them in total recorder to edit
them or anything please advise as to how to fix this?
p.s. i read the stuff about windows vista and am also wondering if this
could effect the usage of total recorder 6.1 in windows xp home? since the
recording stuff has been changed a bit? not sure what that might have to do
with the problem i am having but thought i would ask anyway.

I get all of the XM URLs from the winamp.bm file, after bookmarking the

I don't use I-Tunes so couldn't tell you what features are available in that
software. You should be able to choose either of these methods in winamp.
I've just taken a quick look and can see there's a number of WMA choices but
I don't have winamp pro which it seems you need to look at the mp3 options.

  Subject: Re: mp3 bit rates

  Hi Gary.

ABR does yield a better quality file than CBR. With CBR, the music is
crudely cut off at exactly the bit rate chosen. With ABR, the encoder
keeps
the bit rate around what you've chosen but it does this by taking spare
capacity from parts of the music where it's not needed and adding it to
parts of the music where it would benefit going slightly above the bit
rate
  you've chosen.

So, for example, if you choose an ABR rate of 192 kbps, with a track that
has one minute of music needing only 160kbps and one minute needing
224kbps,
your file would use exactly those bit rates because the average will be
192kbps. Now, if you'd chosen 192kbps for the same track using CBR, you'd
have the first minute using 192kbps so you've wasted 32kbps for that
minute
that wasn't needed and then you'd have crudely chopped off 32kbps from the
  second minute.

VBR is a completely different ball game. Whereas CBR and ABR are all
about
making sure you know how big your file is going to be and cutting the
music
accordingly, VBR is all about choosing a quality and leaving the file size
to be quite unpredictable. VBR is the best way to encode music because it
uses exactly what it needs to do a good job. The only compromise is what
you choose as your level of quality.

  Hope this helps.

  Regards.

And now here's another question for ya: If you use the VBR method, and
you
may use VBR/ABR, the ABR means average bit rate. If that's the case, does
it stay with the average bit rate? If it does, then't it's no better than
CBR method! Or is ABR actually better than just VBR, alone?

the article below gives information on choosing the right bit rate for
your
  audio.
Choosing the Best Bit Rate for Your MP3 Files

Bit Rate Matters Quite A Bit
Digital audio files are NOT all created equal. Technical characteristics
like bit rate, sample size, and sampling frequency can have a big impact
on
  sound
quality. One of the most common - and easily controllable - settings in
the
CD-ripping process is the bit rate. When you convert CD's to MP3's using
a bit rate that is too low, high frequency content - cymbals for example -
can take on a distorted, shimmering sound. Midrange content (like vocals)
  can
also sound squashed or artificial. But just a little knowledge about
the
MP3 conversion process can help you pick the right bit rate to deliver
great
  sound quality.
   CD Quality and Bit Rate
Let's start from the top down in terms of quality. CD quality is 16 bits
of pure high-energy audio at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. We will use CD
  quality
as the benchmark. CD files are called WAV files (.wav) These don't use
any
compression or conversion from the original source - which is why they are
so large and have such great sound.
Remember though, that any MP3 converter is lossy, meaning it is
eliminating some information that can't be recovered. You will never have
  actual CD quality
music on your MP3 player, but your ear probably won't know the difference.
Some other acronyms to be aware of are MP3 and MPEG. The term MP3 is a
shortened word for MPEG audio layer 3. MPEG stands for Motion

Hi Jonathan. Aparently, something happens behind the scenes so that
Replay A/V can record your stream. Here's what I would try.
You know how CNN does a newscast at the top of every hour and it
lasts 2 or 3 minutes? Well, what I would do is schedule a
recording on the Sirius CNN channel at the top of the next hour
coming up and watch replay and see what it does. I know some folks
who have successfully recorded Sirius streams, and Bill Dettering,
the CEO of Applian was on Main Menu a couple weeks ago and confirmed
that the replay A/V software has a way to get past the captcha that
is presented when you log in.
So you may not actually be able to tune to the station using the
method you describe, but I'm guessing that it has some kind of
mechanism for logging in and getting past the captcha.

I don't know how it does it, but it should work fine. Give it a try
and tell us all how you get on. I'd be curious to know myself
actually. I use ReplayA/V every single day and I can't imagine not
using it now.
Hope that helps.

who have successfully recorded Sirius streams, and Bill Dettering,
the CEO of Applian was on Main Menu a couple weeks ago and confirmed
that the replay A/V software has a way to get past the captcha that
is presented when you log in.
So you may not actually be able to tune to the station using the
method you describe, but I'm guessing that it has some kind of
mechanism for logging in and getting past the captcha.

I don't know how it does it, but it should work fine. Give it a try
and tell us all how you get on. I'd be curious to know myself
actually. I use ReplayA/V every single day and I can't imagine not
using it now.
Hope that helps.

When I enter the info correctly, including the channel number and my Sirius

Replay Tuner pops up with the Sirius Online log-in page. Based on the
 clicks
I hear from IE, it sounds like Replay A/V is trying to log me in, however,
on this page it is also showing the visual capture box, so I don't quite

RE: Replay A/V and Sirius Online

2007-03-02 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Chris, thanks for your attempt to help. I've now narrowed down the
problem. You can in fact use the control+T Tune option for Sirius stations,
however, at least on the two systems I've tried it on, you can't have JAWS
running with its default behaviour when you do this. I suspect what's
happening is that there is some kind of macro/script within Replay A/V that
logs a user on. With JAWS running, obviously you need to turn on forms mode
to enter data, and this seems to break the log-on process. If I take JAWS
out of the mix, it works flawlessly. So I suspect all I need to do now is to
set the configuration manager in JAWS so that the virtual cursor isn't used
in the Replay Tuner app. No big deal. So it's great, I'm going to set up all
my Sirius favourites within Replay A/V, which I've been using as my Internet
radio tuner as well as recorder for a long time now. And I get to record all
my favourite CNN programmes.

Jonathan and Chris,

For us newbies, who haven't even used Replay yet, but are subscribed to
Sirius and have trouble just getting logged onto Sirius, well, it seems that
the first thing, in this thread, is that Replay will go beyond the Captcha
feature, to open up a stream, right? I just listened to Petro's podcast, on
recording Sirius and it seems to remedy my particular problem with getting
into the Sirius feed! Then, when I have Replay, on my system, I will try
what you just wrote, Jonathan; wow, what a lot of stuff to have to do, just
to get Sirius running correctly, on line!! This merger needs some thought,
on the tech team's part, do you all know what I mean? It used to be so much
easier to get Sirius running and I have been battling with their customer
support people, for months on this score!

Hi Jonathan. Aparently, something happens behind the scenes so that Replay
A/V can record your stream. Here's what I would try.
You know how CNN does a newscast at the top of every hour and it lasts 2 or
3 minutes? Well, what I would do is schedule a recording on the Sirius CNN
channel at the top of the next hour coming up and watch replay and see what
it does. I know some folks who have successfully recorded Sirius streams,
and Bill Dettering, the CEO of Applian was on Main Menu a couple weeks ago
and confirmed that the replay A/V software has a way to get past the captcha
that is presented when you log in.
So you may not actually be able to tune to the station using the method you
describe, but I'm guessing that it has some kind of mechanism for logging in
and getting past the captcha.

I don't know how it does it, but it should work fine. Give it a try and
tell us all how you get on. I'd be curious to know myself actually. I use
ReplayA/V every single day and I can't imagine not using it now.
Hope that helps.

When I enter the info correctly, including the channel number and my
Sirius username and password, if I select the option to tune to the
station, the Replay Tuner pops up with the Sirius Online log-in page.
Based on the clicks I hear from IE, it sounds like Replay A/V is trying
to log me in, however, on this page it is also showing the visual
capture box, so I don't quite see how Replay A/V can get past this
screen. I am simply returned to the log-in page, which the Tuner never
gets past. For me then, this feature seems broken. Has anyone got this
to
work?

The Sirius site itself is very easy to use, but it would be handy to be
able to record sometimes.

Jeff,

Jonathan is right about the price, however, they usually will charge you by

$15 activation fee, on top of that!

Hi Jeff, I think it's around 12.95 a month. Besides music, there's Howard
Stern, Martha Stuart, a bunch of talk channels including Sirius Left, the
Patriot Channel etc. There are some comedy channels and a kids channel. This
is all going from memory. Most of the content they get from other sources is
not online. The exception to this is the CNN domestic feed, which is the
only reason I have it.

It's $12.50 and XM is $12.95. I only know this because if you like sports
you need them both.

At 02:00 AM 3/2/2007, you wrote:
Hi all, I recently subscribed to Sirius Online now that they stream
CNN. Has anyone actually made a successful recording off Sirius using
Replay A/V?

Jonathan

Re: mp3 bit rates

Hi Gary.

ABR does yield a better quality file than CBR. With CBR, the music is
crudely cut off at exactly the bit rate chosen. With ABR, the encoder keeps
the bit rate around what you've chosen but it does this by taking spare
capacity from parts of the music where it's not needed and adding it to
parts of the music where it would benefit going slightly above the bit rate
you've chosen.

So, for example, if you choose an ABR rate of 192 kbps, with a track that
has one minute of music needing only 160kbps and one minute needing 224kbps,
your file would use exactly those bit rates because the average will be
192kbps. Now, if you'd chosen 192kbps for the same track using CBR, you'd
have the first minute using 192kbps so you've wasted 32kbps for that minute
that wasn't needed and then you'd have crudely chopped off 32kbps from the
second minute.

VBR is a completely different ball game. Whereas CBR and ABR are all about
making sure you know how big your file is going to be and cutting the music
accordingly, VBR is all about choosing a quality and leaving the file size
to be quite unpredictable. VBR is the best way to encode music because it
uses exactly what it needs to do a good job. The only compromise is what
you choose as your level of quality.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

And now here's another question for ya: If you use the VBR method, and you
may use VBR/ABR, the ABR means average bit rate. If that's the case, does
it stay with the average bit rate? If it does, then't it's no better than
CBR method! Or is ABR actually better than just VBR, alone?

Subject: Re: mp3 bit rates

the article below gives information on choosing the right bit rate for your
audio.
Choosing the Best Bit Rate for Your MP3 Files

Bit Rate Matters Quite A Bit
Digital audio files are NOT all created equal. Technical characteristics
like bit rate, sample size, and sampling frequency can have a big impact on
sound
quality. One of the most common - and easily controllable - settings in the
CD-ripping process is the bit rate. When you convert CD's to MP3's using
a bit rate that is too low, high frequency content - cymbals for example -
can take on a distorted, shimmering sound. Midrange content (like vocals)
can
also sound squashed or artificial. But just a little knowledge about the
MP3 conversion process can help you pick the right bit rate to deliver great
sound quality.
 CD Quality and Bit Rate
Let's start from the top down in terms of quality. CD quality is 16 bits
of pure high-energy audio at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. We will use CD
quality
as the benchmark. CD files are called WAV files (.wav) These don't use any
compression or conversion from the original source - which is why they are
so large and have such great sound.
MPEG stands for Motion Picture
Experts
Group. This is the organization that created the encoding process that
takes large CD files and converts them into smaller packages of music to
enjoy
on-the-go. The MP3 encoding process throws out all of the redundant
information in your music that your ear (hopefully) won't miss. It then
packages it
in a smaller and more convenient file, enabling you to hear basically CD
quality music for about 1/12 of the size.
A benefit of using MP3 files is that it allows you to control the Bit Rate.
Bit rate tells us how fast the data in an audio file is sent through the
converter
into your storage device. It's akin to taking a hundreds of thousands of
nano pictures of the audio information in one second.
