Re: FM Transmitters: Which One?

2007-08-22 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Bob, this is John.
People know me as Dj Dr.p or just plane oh Mr. Price.
All depending on what circle of people you happen to be in.
I am thinking about buying that same transmitter that you have.
I mite get that one+an am transmitter.
I have a stereo receiver that goes all the way back to the mid to late
1950s.
The tuner part of it is sat up like this.
Fm for the right speaker, am for the left and viceversa.
I've always wanted to send a stereo signal to that old receiver that way
just to see what it would sound like.
People have said that am reception isn't all that.
But from my experience, it depends on the radio itself.
Where a lot of today's radios lack, this is where tube radios make up for
what's lacking in today's radios.
You and or a lot of people may or may not agree with me on this, but I'd
like to try it any way.

Re: FM Transmitters: Which One?

2007-08-22 Thread Bob Seed
The question that must be answered first is how much do you want to pay?
Go to www.fmamplifiers.com and check out the home FM transmitter that they
have on their site. .
A couple of months ago, there was a great thread on this list about FM
transmitters. A user recommended the transmitter found at
http://www.wavemach.com.

I purchased one of these and am thrilled. The range is huge, the
construction solid, no nasty power hum, very good stereo separation, in
short, no complaints whatsoever. I got him to add a level control that
allows me to set the line in for the two RCA sockets, and he also added
small buttons for setting the frequency. It has a standard antenna socket at
the back and comes with a very solid little antenna, not just a wire.

So if you're looking for an FM transmitter, this one is definitely worth a
look, but it is on the high end of the price range. You definitely get what
you pay for though.

Re: [blindreplay] Freecorder 2 & Freecorder Toolbar Scripts Wanted

2007-08-22 Thread Kelly Pierce
Petro,

You seem to be highly comfortable with the response that Applian uses
third-party contractors for various components of its software business and
therefore has no responsibility to its customers for the performance of
these components, which in our case is the accessibility of Applian
software. In the past decade and a half, the blind community and
disability community as a whole have totally and completely rejected this
buck passing. First the major software companies, including Microsoft,
Real Networks, and Adobe have been expected from the get go to provide full
access to their software, regardless of how it was developed.

next, folks engaged the country's largest financial institutions to create
access to banking services. The banks worked with vendors, contractors and
service providers to deliver talking ATM's for the blind and accessible
websites. These efforts led to the first legally binding settlement
agreements that committed to web accessibility for people with
disabilities.

The bank projects were followed by initiatives on cell phone accessibility.
the issue was that the wireless service providers passed the buck to the
handset manufacturers. yet, the manufacturing companies said that they
designed phones with significant input from the providers who would largely
market and sell the phones. The arrangement was hardly that of an
impartial, arms-length party just purchasing goods in the marketplace,
passing the hot potato of access back to the wireless providers.

The efforts led to a 2004 agreement by Audio and Verizon Communications to
design, manufacture, market and sell a cell phone accessible to the blind
with audio-enabled controls.

similarly, people with disabilities expected accessibility of voting
machines in the United States during the last election cycle during the
2006 elections. Software and control devices for some machines were
developed or designed at some of the voting machine companies by foreign
subsidiaries or third party vendors. Local election officials facilitated
relationships with the various parties to obtain and significantly improve
access, allowing voters with certain kinds of disabilities to vote
independently for the first time.

I realize that the large companies often have complex and many-layered
relationships with their vendors and contractors. A vendor may develop or
provide access to a product or service to prevent the institution from
developing a relationship with another vendor who can provide access and
possibly a whole lot more. The large companies can leverage these
relationships to obtain consideration from vendors that smaller companies
can't.

all of this being said, it is highly disappointing that we seem to accept
wholesale Applian's response regarding access issues with their products.
They don't explain why access issues could not have been written into the
contracts or agreements they have with their vendors. It is not clear if
the company raised these issues in a meaningful manner early on in the
relationship with the third party vendor or if it was an afterthought once
the work was completed.

In various areas of technology access for more than a decade, people with
disabilities have worked with companies to achieve greater independence in
their lives through technology. the third-party contractor argument has
not been accepted by disability leaders who have worked on access in
various sectors in the technology industry. In a similar way it has also
been rejected by the mainstream as well. Wednesday's Wall Street Journal
ran a lengthy page one investigation of how the largest retailers and
apparel makers in the United States are responsible for incredible
pollution in China for demanding ever lower prices, leading contractors to
pollute the environment to save money. there was no suggestion that gap,
Target, Nike, and the like had no responsibility because they used a third
party vendor.

Applian's shoulder shrugging and subsequent finger pointing to a
third-party vender isn't a constructive response to developing accessible
solutions. it is unclear why the company cannot incorporate accessible
design into their relationships with these vendors or if they have even
asked about it at the start of their relationship. I don't believe at this
time why our expectations for access should be relaxed at this time when
other organizations have been able to develop systems and approaches around
these same issues. the end result has been access that we all now use and
enjoy.

Brian,

I certainly don't want to discourage you from writing scripts for this tool
bar for those that want it, but my personal feeling is that the ideal
solution would be for Applien to make it more accessible to begin with. It
would then be just as accessible for all users and not just those running
JFW. Not sure how easy this is with tool bars, but it would be great if
user definable global hot keys could be added for most if not all of the
major functions. This would make it truly accessible.

I do think it is a fairly useful toolbar and expect it will get better as
time goes on, especially if they are able to add Skype recording which isn't
particularly important for me but I know it is definitely something many
folks want.

Subject: Freecorder toolbar and accessibility

Hi

Well I now have the Freecorder toolbar working fine. There would not be any

problem scripting this for jaws, as all the toolbar buttons can be built
into a vertical list, or shortcut keys built into them, or both, whatever
people want really, and that's the question. Do people want access to this
program? Is it going to be useful if I do this, baring in mind that it does

not record skype calls. To be frank, I have held back on writing a few
scripts for version 2 of the product because there are other products which
record Skype calls and which are accessible, and where the developers have
obviously gone a long way to build accessibility into the product and I
think that ought to be supported.

As I say, if people think this is of value and they would like scripts,
please let me know. But again, Maybe the developers ought to be persuaded
to build accessibility into the product. It is new after all! This is the
kind of thing Main Menu ought to be following up, and perhaps they would
have done in the live segment this week if problems had not arisen because I

know they were going to talk about recording with Skype etc.

Hello,

I have forgotten how to do this since I have not had need to do so in

In Goldwave 5.19, how does one move the start marker right or left, and
how does one move the finish marker to the right or left. I realize
that the amount of movement is determined by the zoom, but I just
cannot seem to find the keyboard commands to move the markers. I am of
course not talking about playing the file and then hitting the bracket

Thanks in advance for ideas.

It occurs to me another problem might be that my version of Quicktime, the
free version, is not able to process or play movie files. Has anyone
encountered profound differences between the free version and the
"professional" version of Quicktime in regard to file formats?

I should add that the C. Crane unit sounds decent and isn't expensive. The
problem is getting it to go more than 50 to 100 feet. If you don't care
about distance you could go with that one (your note seems to indicate you
do however).

I'd say if you're from the U S probably one of the Ramsey units would be
your best bet. You would however need to get someone to build it or you'd
need to find one on Ebay because the assembled units can't be sold legally
in the U.S. now.
All the others are either quite expensive or junk IMHO.

Not sure about Sonos, but I just read about one called the Phoenix WiFi Radio
on one of my favorite blogs, Orbitcast.com. Looks like an interesting device,
but again, not sure about accessibility. I have an email into the company to
find out about the price of the unit as well as how accessible it is, or if
they have plans to add speech support or something for blind users. For those
who are interested, the website is www.wifi-radio.biz, and the email address if
you'd like to encourage them to put something in place to make the radios
accessible is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Of course, if I hear anything from them, I'll let everyone know.

To Vicki's question about the benefits of installing the ACB Radio
Tuner, Jeff Bishop responded on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 07:58:09 -0700:
>It simply gives you a simple way to access all streams of ACB Radio.

More than that, in case the addresses of ACB Radio's streams ever
change, which, if I'm not tipping my hand too far over, they will in
the next few months, the tuner doesn't need updating because it gets
the stream URL's direct from the ACB Radio server site, and as long as
there's a correct nameserver translation for acbradio.org, the tuner
will never fail. Winamp bookmarks and special playlists with all the
ACB Radio stream URL's in them are fine, but they'll eventually break
when the stream URL's change, and if you've listened to ACB Radio for
at least the past year, you know there's been at least one address
change already, plus we've added a new stream, which your bookmarks or
custom playlists will never know about, but which will appear
auto-magically in the tuner as they happen.

I've been using it quite successfully without any SET files since
Version 5.5 of Window-Eyes. In fact, Window-Eyes is the only speech

render the Delphi screens correctly and make the package useable by a

These devices are difficult or impossible to control as a blind
person. There's a Dutch company, which is working on a talking
Internet radio for blind people, I forgot their name.

Dedicated Internet Radio Listening Devices

2007-08-22 Thread Kane Brolin
I recently have heard advertisements for a device, I think sold by C
Crane, which permits someone to select and listen to direct streams
live from the Internet, without the need for a full-featured PC. This
might be a great device with which to travel, because all one needs
(according to the ad) is a broadband connection and a wall-mounted AC
outlet.

How well do these devices work? With so many streams, format types,
and feed sources out there, how does the user interact with this
device to point to what you want? Is this at all feasible to operate
if one does not have eyesight?

Just curious,

FM Transmitters: Which One?

2007-08-22 Thread Kane Brolin
I'm becoming more and more interested in a simple FM transmitter that
will take output from a computer's sound card--such as something
streaming across the Net--and transmit this at low power to an FM
frequency of my choosing so the output may be heard throughout my
building.

I know these have come down in price, and there are lots of options.
Is there a place I can go to gain a good basic understanding of pros
and cons and of differences between brands? I want decent quality,
and I want something that will transmit on any FM frequency used
widely in North America, not just the low or high end of these bands.
And it would help if this is simple enough for someone totally blind
to use. The first I heard about these was on a C Crane advertisement,
but I'm sure their brand is not the only choice.

Price is a consideration, but I don't want junk that will need
replacing immediately, either. So I would pay a little more for
reliability.

Thanks for any suggestions or reference links.

Converting WMV Files to iPod Friendly Format

2007-08-22 Thread Kane Brolin
This is related somewhat to my prior post, about a Quicktime .MOV file
that would not convert to any other format using SoundTaxi.

I found the same podcast I wanted, except with episodes delivered via
Juice in a .WMV format (used for Windows movies). SoundTaxi this time
didn't even think about converting this to an MP3 or MP4 format, and
it occurs to me that this is probably because SoundTaxi is in essence
an audio program that probably cannot handle video or movie files of
any kind. This time the error message spoke of "format mismatch."

Is this true? If so, is there a similar but more advanced type of
conversion program that can take a movie file in one format
(compatible with Windows Media Player, Real Media, etc.) and convert
it into something the iPod will accept and play?

Thanks,

-Kane

Hello,

I have forgotten how to do this since I have not had need to do so in
months.

In Goldwave 5.19, how does one move the start marker right or left, and
how does one move the finish marker to the right or left. I realize
that the amount of movement is determined by the zoom, but I just
cannot seem to find the keyboard commands to move the markers. I am of
course not talking about playing the file and then hitting the bracket
keys.

Thanks in advance for ideas.

RE: Freecorder toolbar and accessibility

2007-08-22 Thread Rick Alfaro

I do think it is a fairly useful toolbar and expect it will get better as
time goes on, especially if they are able to add Skype recording which isn't
particularly important for me but I know it is definitely something many
folks want.

Quicktime Movie File Not Playing or Converting

2007-08-22 Thread Kane Brolin
Out of the blue I've run into a frustrating situation:

One of the podcasts I've subscribed to has an episode that came across
as a .MOV file, meant to be played in Quicktime. The file downloads
fine in either Juice or iTunes. But when I tried to copy it to my
iPod automatically with iTunes, just as one would do with practically
any other podcast episode, I received an error message saying that my
kind of iPod (Video 30 GB) would not play it, so the Apple software
will not copy it over. Then I found two other interesting aspects:

(1) When attempting to play this file directly using Quicktime 7.2, I
am given a generic message saying that a third-party add-on or plugin
is needed to play this type of file in Quicktime. I am referred
generally to a third party plugin archive maintained by Apple's Music
Store, but there is no indication of which one I need.

(2) Then I decided to use SoundTaxi to convert the file. In the
beginning everything seems to go fine as I identify the file and then
begin the conversion process. But then, right at about the 16% mark,
my conversion stops and I get an error message stating simply
"Conversion didn't start within 60 seconds." I thought the percentage
prompts told me it was starting immediately!

What am I not picking up on here? Why is it not natural for a
video-enabled iPod to receive and play .MOV files designed for Apple
software to begin with?

Thanks in advance for any help.

-Kane

Response from Applian on Freecorder Toolbar 3

2007-08-22 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
To recap in case some of you are not following this. Today I
noticed a "Digg It!" button appearing my toolbar which was not
there before and why the FCT3 does not record Skype.

Response from Applian Technologies:

Hi Petro -

The DIGG button is temporary for a couple of days. I'm not sure
you can disable
automatic updates. If you leave them on the Digg button will
disappear
 shortly.

As far as recording Skype goes, it's still in the works. The
Sound Separation
feature in Freecorder Toolbar makes it harder to remix the
audio from separate
 parts of the Skype call.

Best Regards,

Thank you.

Well hey, why not get other script writers involved in this too? I'm
sure if they worked together and put their talents to good work they
could come up with something nice. Personally I'm really not

prefer regular program interfaces. but that's a personal preference thing.

Freecorder 2 & Freecorder Toolbar Scripts Wanted

2007-08-22 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
Hi Brian & All
I want Jaws scripts for both Freecorder 2 which does record
Skype calls but as you already know Brian this program needs
scripts for the product key and some other minor issues I've
already told you privately.

As for Freecorder Toolbar 3 program it would be great to have
Jaws scripts for this program too. Scripts for the toolbar
buttons. Today I noticed something new in my toolbar called the
Digg It! button. I have written to Applian to make sure about
this new Digg It! button appearance within the toolbar.

This toolbar is made by Conduit and not by Applian. It's an
Israeli company.

I think the reason I am seeing this new Digg It! is during the
Freecorder Toolbar 3 installation on the Conduit screen I left
the checkbox enabled to allow for automatic updates checked. Not
sure as I am asking Applian.

I am just a user of Applian Technologies products and check for
accessibility. If the software is made by Applian they can
sometimes fix the issue but if it's from a 3rd party that
usually is difficult. Remember the YouSendIt plug in issue. The
developers from YSI wrote to me 2 times and I never heard from
them again.

Thank you very much.

Re: Freecorder toolbar and accessibility

2007-08-22 Thread Brent Harding
I don't necessarily care for adding extra toolbars to IE. The thing this
supposedly has going for it is that Applian found a way to get around the
lack of wave out, stereo mix, etc in the recording controls and not use a
virtual sound driver. The article I read also says that they don't record
the messenger and other system sounds and only record the audio from the
application you start. I don't get how this can even be possible. If that
all actually works, it'd probably be a great program to have scripts for,
although the article said they could add the new recording enhancements to
their other products that are accessible.

Freecorder toolbar and accessibility

2007-08-22 Thread Brian Hartgen

Freecorder Toolbar 3 Better details

2007-08-22 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
Hi Brian
Any luck with the scripts for Freecorder 2?

Here's what I do with Freecorder Toolbar 3.

Maximize your IE browser first.

Route jaws to PC cursor.

Ctrl+Home.

Press Home key.

Arrow down 2 times.

Press Home Key.

Use your navigation keys.

Like Ctrl+ right arrow key. That is hold down ctrl key and keep
pressing your right arrow key.

You will eventually hear and land on Record.

Pressing ctrl+ right arrow 1 more time will advance you to stop
button on the toolbar.

To activate the buttons you do a jaws left mouse click.

Right after the Convert button there are some unlabeled buttons
and these are for the radio tuner.

So right after you hear Convert button you have:

unlabeled Play button for the tuner.

1 more button over from the unlabeled play button is the stop
button for the radio tuner.

I used insert+G to label the unlabeled play button as
"play-station".

Hope this helps.

  Hi DJC and all
The current version of Freecorder Toolbar 3 does not record
Skype calls. I was told this when I first tested FCT3 on August
1st as I asked Applian Tech about it.

With Jaws 8 I see the buttons:
Record, Stop, Play, Pause, Settings, convert, Classic Rock
button. I used Jaws graphics labeler to label the unlabeled Play
button that appears right after the Convert button.

  Tips:
Maximize your IE browser. Jaws users then do route jaws to PC
cursor, ctrl+home, then a home key.

Down arrow 2 times then do a home key.

Use navigation keys like Ctrl+right arrow keys to navigate to
your right and you will hear the record, stop, play, pause,
settings, convert, Classic rock (default radio tuner station
  which can be changed).

To activate any of the buttons for the toolbar within IE browser
you do a jaws left mouse click.

For example when you choose record button a Freecorder dialog
box appears. Go back to PC cursor mode with Jaws.

Applian calls this dialog box the Visualization window. It will
  say "recording in it.

You must minimize this window. If you close it with alt+F4 you
will cause to stop recording. The user guide explains this.

I did 13 podcasts on this Freecorder Toolbar 3.

Re: Walmart Music Downloads

2007-08-22 Thread Mac Norins
Don't want to get too political here, but, isn't Wal Mart the company that
we all love to hate, because they support China, so much-- because they
don't pay a living wage-- because they are the epitome of a Corporate
Conglomerate? That would be the ultimate set of questions. I heard some
commentary, this morning on the radio, though, that the albums were selling
for $ 9.94, not $18.94!

That's it, that's all; if you need to shop Wal Mart, you haven't researched
the market well enough!

man, for 94 cents a track, and a whole album at almost 20 bucks, why
bother when a site like Mp3 sparks or other sites give you an even
wider selection for much less money? I give Wal-mart credit for
finally getting their act together and offering downloadable mp3
songs and albums, but at $20 an album, that is just too damn much
money. If they're going to do that, sell the albums at half that
price and I bet people would be even more willing to buy them.

Microphone recording on the fly

2007-08-22 Thread Jason Boston
Hi all,
I'm looking for a JFW friendly program that will allow me to record via
a microphone with a simple hot key from anywhere on the computer. Say I
hit control + alt + r, I want it to start recording and then stop again
when I hit the same key stroke or another key stroke. I would like these
hot keys to work no matter what program I'm in as long as that hot key
combination isn't already in use for the application currently on in
focus.

Any ideas out there?

I want this so I can record conversations at my desk without being
obvious about it.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Freecorder toolbar

2007-08-22 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi Brian,

I just installed it under xp and it is showing on my toolbar.
I get options like "record, play, stop, pause, convert
Interspursed with the regular IE7 stuff.
Best way to get to it is the following:
1. tab or shift-tab in IE7 till you get to the "toolbar refresh F5 button"
2. activate the jaws cursor.
3. arrow up to the toolbars and you should see some options like
record/play/stop/pause convert etc.

Hope this helps.

And, to this very same point, what about MP3 DirectCut, Audacity,
Applian's own Replay AV, Redbutton, et al?
Where does reality differ from the hype?

I'm not a Vista user at this time; but I am somewhat skeptical of the
initial hypothesis as, I believe, this issue would be more widely
discussed if it were actually 100% on target.
What can you seasoned Vista users tell us?
