Re: FM Transmitters: Which One?

2007-08-23 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Bob, this is John.
People know me as Dj Dr.p or just plane oh Mr. Price.
All depending on what circle of people you happen to be in.
I am thinking about buying that same transmitter that you have.
I mite get that one+an am transmitter.
I have a stereo receiver that goes all the way back to the mid to late
1950s.
The tuner part of it is sat up like this.
Fm for the right speaker, am for the left and viceversa.
I've always wanted to send a stereo signal to that old receiver that way
just to see what it would sound like.
People have said that am reception isn't all that.
But from my experience, it depends on the radio itself.
Where a lot of today's radios lack, this is where tube radios make up for
what's lacking in today's radios.
You and or a lot of people may or may not agree with me on this, but I'd
like to try it any way.

The question that must be answered first is how much do you want to pay?
Go to www.fmamplifiers.com and check out the home FM transmitter that they
 have on their site. .
A couple of months ago, there was a great thread on this list about FM
transmitters. A user recommended the transmitter found at
 http://www.wavemach.com.

I purchased one of these and am thrilled. The range is huge, the
construction solid, no nasty power hum, very good stereo separation, in
short, no complaints whatsoever. I got him to add a level control that
allows me to set the line in for the two RCA sockets, and he also added
small buttons for setting the frequency. It has a standard antenna socket
 at
the back and comes with a very solid little antenna, not just a wire.

So if you're looking for an FM transmitter, this one is definitely worth a
look, but it is on the high end of the price range. You definitely get
 what
 you pay for though.

I'm becoming more and more interested in a simple FM transmitter that
will take output from a computer's sound card--such as something
streaming across the Net--and transmit this at low power to an FM
frequency of my choosing so the output may be heard throughout my
 building.

I know these have come down in price, and there are lots of options.
Is there a place I can go to gain a good basic understanding of pros
and cons and of differences between brands? I want decent quality,
and I want something that will transmit on any FM frequency used
widely in North America, not just the low or high end of these bands.
And it would help if this is simple enough for someone totally blind
to use. The first I heard about these was on a C Crane advertisement,
but I'm sure their brand is not the only choice.

Price is a consideration, but I don't want junk that will need
replacing immediately, either. So I would pay a little more for
 reliability.

Thanks for any suggestions or reference links.

Good morning, Kelly.

It's good to be reminded of this history. However, I don't read Petro's
message as showing comfort with the failings of third-party suppliers. He
says only that their involvement, especially when they are foreign companies
whose country's laws may be different from ours, can make solving problems
difficult, which it can. Some of the successes you describe were also hard
won. It sounds to me as though Petro is continuing to pursue a solution. I
don't know Petro and perhaps shouldn't speak for him, but that's how I read
his message. As you know, he has contributed a great deal through his

Petro,

You seem to be highly comfortable with the response that Applian uses
third-party contractors for various components of its software business and
therefore has no responsibility to its customers for the performance of
these components, which in our case is the accessibility of Applian
software. In the past decade and a half, the blind community and disability
community as a whole have totally and completely rejected this buck passing.
First the major software companies, including Microsoft, Real Networks, and
Adobe have been expected from the get go to provide full access to their
software, regardless of how it was developed.

next, folks engaged the country's largest financial institutions to create
access to banking services. The banks worked with vendors, contractors and
service providers to deliver talking ATM's for the blind and accessible
websites. These efforts led to the first legally binding settlement
agreements that committed to web accessibility for people with disabilities.

The bank projects were followed by initiatives on cell phone accessibility.
the issue was that the wireless service providers passed the buck to the
handset manufacturers. yet, the manufacturing companies said that they
designed phones with significant input from the providers who would largely
market and sell the phones. The arrangement was hardly that of an impartial,
arms-length party just purchasing goods in the marketplace, passing the hot
potato of access back to the wireless providers.

The efforts led to a 2004 agreement by Audio and Verizon Communications to
design, manufacture, market and sell a cell phone accessible to the blind
with audio-enabled controls.

similarly, people with disabilities expected accessibility of voting
machines in the United States during the last election cycle during the 2006
elections. Software and control devices for some machines were developed or
designed at some of the voting machine companies by foreign subsidiaries or
third party vendors. Local election officials facilitated relationships with
the various parties to obtain and significantly improve access, allowing
voters with certain kinds of disabilities to vote independently for the
first time.

I realize that the large companies often have complex and many-layered
relationships with their vendors and contractors. A vendor may develop or
provide access to a product or service to prevent the institution from
developing a relationship with another vendor who can provide access and
possibly a whole lot more. The large companies can leverage these
relationships to obtain consideration from vendors that smaller companies
can't.

all of this being said, it is highly disappointing that we seem to accept
wholesale Applian's response regarding access issues with their products.
They don't explain why access issues could not have been written into the
contracts or agreements they have with their vendors. It is not clear if the
company raised these issues in a meaningful manner early on in the
relationship with the third party vendor or if it was an afterthought once
the work was completed.

In various areas of technology access for more than a decade, people with
disabilities have worked with companies to achieve greater independence in
their lives through technology. the third-party contractor argument has not
been accepted by disability leaders who have worked on access in various
sectors in the technology industry. In a similar way it has also been
rejected by the mainstream as well. Wednesday's Wall Street Journal ran a
lengthy page one investigation of how the largest retailers and apparel
makers in the United States are responsible for incredible pollution in
China for demanding ever lower prices, leading contractors to pollute the
environment to save money. there was no suggestion that gap, Target, Nike,
and the like had no responsibility because they used a third party vendor.

Applian's shoulder shrugging and subsequent finger pointing to a third-party
vender isn't a constructive response to

RE: start markers in Goldwave

2007-08-23 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Loren. When you open a file and then press CTRL+a the start and Finish
markers will move to the extreme ends of the file if they are not already
there. You cannot move them any further out than this, you can only move
them into the centre of the file. It may be that your Zoom is set at the
minimum increment and thus it would be hard to notice any movement. to
check if the markers move open a file. Make sure the markers are at the
extremities of the file, set your zoom to maximum and then try again. If
they both work then fine, if not? I'm stuck. Do you have scripts installed
as this will help you to know if the markers are moving, even in 1000th of a
second increments? Walter.

This is related somewhat to my prior post, about a Quicktime .MOV file
that would not convert to any other format using SoundTaxi.

I found the same podcast I wanted, except with episodes delivered via
Juice in a .WMV format (used for Windows movies). SoundTaxi this time
didn't even think about converting this to an MP3 or MP4 format, and
it occurs to me that this is probably because SoundTaxi is in essence
an audio program that probably cannot handle video or movie files of
any kind. This time the error message spoke of format mismatch.

Is this true? If so, is there a similar but more advanced type of
conversion program that can take a movie file in one format
(compatible with Windows Media Player, Real Media, etc.) and convert
it into something the iPod will accept and play?

Thanks,

-Kane

websites. These efforts led to the first legally binding settlement
agreements that committed to web accessibility for people with
disabilities.

The bank projects were followed by initiatives on cell phone accessibility.
the issue was that the wireless service providers passed the buck to the
handset manufacturers. yet, the manufacturing companies said that they
designed phones with significant input from the providers who would largely
market and sell the phones. The arrangement was hardly that of an
impartial, arms-length party just purchasing goods in the marketplace,
passing the hot potato of access back to the wireless providers.

The efforts led to a 2004 agreement by Audio and Verizon Communications to
design, manufacture, market and sell a cell phone accessible to the blind
with audio-enabled controls.

similarly, people with disabilities expected accessibility of voting
machines in the United States during the last election cycle during the
2006 elections. Software and control devices for some machines were
developed or designed at some of the voting machine companies by foreign
subsidiaries or third party vendors. Local election officials facilitated
relationships with the various parties to obtain and significantly improve
access, allowing voters with certain kinds of disabilities to vote
independently for the first time.

It is not clear if
the company raised these issues in a meaningful manner early on in the
relationship with the third party vendor or if it was an afterthought once
the work was completed.

In various areas of technology access for more than a decade, people with
disabilities have worked with companies to achieve greater independence in
their lives through technology. the third-party contractor argument has
not been accepted by disability leaders who have worked on access in
various sectors in the technology industry. In a similar way it has also
been rejected by the mainstream as well. Wednesday's Wall Street Journal
ran a lengthy page one investigation of how the largest retailers and
apparel makers in the United States are responsible for incredible
pollution in China for demanding ever lower prices, leading contractors to
pollute the environment to save money. there was no suggestion that gap,
Target, Nike, and the like had no responsibility because they used a third
party vendor.

Applian's shoulder shrugging and subsequent finger pointing to a
third-party vender isn't a constructive response to

A Rockbox Voice file creation under Cigwin question.

2007-08-23 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Gang:

Perhaps one of you technical wizzards can help me figure something out.

I am wanting to create my own SAPI5 voice file for Rockbox under Cigwin.

There is a discription of how to accomplish this task; however, I'm not
understanding one of the steps.

The information is as follows:

list of 5 items
1. mkdir build
2. cd build
3. ../tools/configure
4. Follow the on-screen instructions, selecting:
list of 5 items nesting level 1
1. your target platform (a number)
2. A for advanced
3. V for voice
4. Your TTS engine (F for festival, E for espeak, L for flite or S for
SAPI5)
5. Select your language (a number) or press ENTER for English.
list end nesting level 1
5. make voice
list end
You now have a language.voice file.

The question is, how does one get to step 3:
3. ../tools/configure.

Obviously, there is something else that I need to download and install
besides Cigwin.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

Sound Forge audio crackling and popping

2007-08-23 Thread Matthew2007
HI all,

I'm using Sound Forge 8 and I'm noticing a distinct little popping and
crackling when I raise the volume on my audio files. That is, I have either
a .wav or .ogg file and run it through Sound Forge's volume raising utility,
and I choose the 200% boost because I don't know how to customize this
boosting setting, and I save the file as .ogg. I then listen to the original
file really loud and compare it to the file with the volume I just raised,
and I find that the second file has this staticky sound at certain parts of
the file that are not present in the original file. The static seems to be
most pronounced when there are lots of loud things happening at the same
time, or when a single sound is very loud as in the event of an audio
explosion in a movie and so on. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated as
I don't want to keep wasting so much time processing files with so much
crackling.

thanks,
Matthew

Well, I've done something wrong. When I use the shift-control-right and
left arrow to move the finish marker, it works. But, the control-right and
left arrow does not work on the start marker. Is there a setting for this?
It use to work.

What DOES the check and uncheck of tools/control do?

Go to www.fmamplifiers.com and check out the home FM transmitter that
 they
 have on their site.

So if you're looking for an FM transmitter, this one is definitely worth
 a
look, but it is on the high end of the price range. You definitely get
 what
 you pay for though.

 Subject: FM Transmitters: Which One?

In nearly all Sound Forge dialogues, you can preview by hitting alt p.
This lets you hear what it will sound like before you commit yourself.
Hit alt p again to stop the preview. While you are listening to the
preview, alt B toggles by-pass on and off, so you can compare what it
sounds like now with what it will sound like when you've finished.

 Subject: FM Transmitters: Which One?

I'm becoming more and more interested in a simple FM transmitter that
will take output from a computer's sound card--such as something
streaming across the Net--and transmit this at low power to an FM
frequency of my choosing so the output may be heard throughout my
 building.

I know these have come down in price, and there are lots of options.
Is there a place I can go to gain a good basic understanding of pros and
cons and of differences between brands? I want decent quality, and I
want something that will transmit on any FM frequency used widely in
North America, not just the low or high end of these bands.
And it would help if this is simple enough for someone totally blind to
use. The first I heard about these was on a C Crane advertisement, but
I'm sure their brand is not the only choice.

Price is a consideration, but I don't want junk that will need replacing
immediately, either. So I would pay a little more for reliability.

Thanks for any suggestions or reference links.

Good afternoon,

I am using winamp version#5.35. Up until yesterday, I have not been able to

 Hi Gang:

Perhaps one of you technical wizzards can help me figure something out.

I am wanting to create my own SAPI5 voice file for Rockbox under Cigwin.

There is a discription of how to accomplish this task; however, I'm not
 understanding one of the steps.

 The information is as follows:

 list of 5 items
 1. mkdir build
 2. cd build
 3. ../tools/configure
 4. Follow the on-screen instructions, selecting:
list of 5 items nesting level 1
 1. your target platform (a number)
 2. A for advanced
 3. V for voice
 4. Your TTS engine (F for festival, E for espeak, L for flite or S for
 SAPI5)
 5. Select your language (a number) or press ENTER for English.
 list end nesting level 1
 5. make voice
 list end
You now have a language.voice file.

The question is, how does one get to step 3:
 3. ../tools/configure.

Obviously, there is something else that I need to download and install
 besides Cigwin.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

 That is to much trouble.
I think the letters PC are suppose to mean personal computer.
If I can't do what I want to do on a Vista system right out of the box,
 then
 who needs it.
My job requires me to do a lot of things with digital audio technology.
If Vista is going to hinder me from doing this, then I will spend my money
 on a Mack O-X-X system.
Coming from a blind person's prospective, Macks are a hole lot user
 friendlier then PCs any way.
So I will go that rout if I have to.

New PC Software Restores Audio Recording Capabilities to Windows
 Vista for Free

Applian Technolgoies has just released a free, audio recorder
that works incredibly well with Windows Vista and XP. This
 recorder uses revolutionary new
recording technology which is sound card independent. It can
capture audio as MP3 files from virtually any application or
 internet stream.

San Anselmo, CA (PRWEB) August 20, 2007 -- Applian Technologies
 has just released the
 Freecorder Toolbar Sound Recorder
, a free audio capture program for Windows Vista which restores
the audio recording functionality previously available in prior
 versions of Windows. Using
a new driverless recording process developed by Applian, the
software allows customers to capture audio as MP3 files from
 virtually any application or
internet stream. Freecorder Toolbar is free, and available today
 from
 www.freecorder.com.

istorically, all PC's had sound card drivers with an easily
accessible recording line, and also allowed recording
applications to install custom sound card
drivers. Today, the sound card drivers that ship with Windows
Vista rarely make a recording line available, or if a sound card
 does have a recording line,
that capability is buried. And the new driver signing
requirement of Windows Vista has permanently disabled sound
capture technologies that relied on custom
drivers. Before Freecorder Toolbar, it has been difficult or
impossible to capture audio in Windows Vista.

Internet audio or application-generated sound can now be saved
by everyone. And our convenient browser-based interface offers
 enhanced search capabilities
and other cool tools, all for free. Everyone should have this
great little recorder on their browser.
Freecorder Toolbar works inside both Internet Explorer and
Firefox, and offers simple one-button recording that saves
everything you hear from your PC speakers
as either an MP3 or WAV file. It will also record from the
microphone or line-in inputs on your PC. Additionally,
 Freecorder Toolbar includes a powerful
Google-based search, and optional browser enhancements like a
radio tuner, weather bug, pop-up blocker, search highlighter and
 more.

We are thrilled to be able to give consumers an easy-to-use
universal audio recorder that works great with Windows Vista and

Conduit is to provide website publishers with the most powerful
components and content for their community toolbar, and
 ultimately to deliver a superior

is a clear leader managing streaming media and we are delighted
 to provide their highly
useful tools via our platform. Freecorder Toolbar contains no
advertising, and is available for free from Freecorder.com. It
