100% = 320kbps
66% = 256kbps
33% = 192kbps
0% = 128kbps

I'm using JAWS, and what I'm having to do in order to read the bit rate is
turn on the JAWS cursor and navigate to a line underneath the slider where
the size and bit rate info is displayed. Also, I'm using wmp 10, so not sure
if the above stats are the same for the newest version of the player.

 Thanks for these pointers guys.

I have been able to change the file naming format, choose the directory,
but I can only see a percentage slider for the quality of the MP3. Is
there a way to specify the bit rate, if not what rate is the 100 percent
 quality?

High Alex, this is John.
You can get an RCA to 1-8th ench stereo adapter cord from:
http://www.radioshack.com
for about $7.
You plug the 1-8th ench end of the cord in to the line in jack on your sound
card.
The RCA end of the cord plugs in to your tape player or what have you.
I hope this helps.

Re: A conversion question:

2007-10-06 Thread Kevin Lloyd
An uncompressed lossless track from an audio CD is approximately 3 times
larger than it's MP3 equivalent encoded at 320 kbps. Typically, the
uncompressed track would be around the 30 meg mark for a 5 minute track
whereas the MP3 equivalent would be around the 10 meg mark.

If you're ripping in a compressed lossy format like MP3 then you'd probably
be better to use variable bitrate rather than constant.

Re: Rippers and Conversion Packages

2007-10-06 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Typical errors from bad rips include:

start of track and end of track blips - that is a millisecond of the
previous or next track included in the ripped track. Very typical for
CD-ROMS that haven't got offsets configured correctly.

Jitter - portions of the track with very minor little pieces of what sounds
like stutter or echo.

Skipping - tracks sounding like they're being fast forwarded for short
intervals almost like when using cue and review.

Hi I am having some trouble with Sound Forge. I have used sound forge for a

control.
Anyway here comes the problem. When I installed my tride and true and
registered copy of sf 5 on my new installation of xp pro somehow scrub mode
doesn't work at all. I should mention that I do use WE and have checked all
set files to the best of my ability.
I thought ok I'll bite the bullet and upgrade to at least sf 7 and guess
what? Same thing. I really need my editing software back and I'm not quite
ready to throw in the towel. I don't know if there is a setting in sf I am
missing or what could be happening. I cannot really aford 100 bucks or so
for the script biles for jfw. We has worked so well before and now I'm
really having a time of it.
So if any of you have had the same problem or know how I can fix it. Please

I'm using media player version 10 with JFW version 5.0.

Yes, you can skip forward and backwards in a track using the seek slider.
Just tab until you hear seek and then use your right and left arrow keys.

Yes, there are plug ins but I personally haven't played with them to date.

  Hi Kelly.

Windows media player is a very accessible animal these days and is worth
anyone taking another look. It's media library is completely accessible
 and
easy to use unlike winamp which bounces from version to version breaking
 and
fixing the library. It is easy to select which tracks you wish to rip
 using
only your PC cursor and spacebar. No need here for use of the JAWS
 cursor
or equivalent and no struggles trying to work out what is checked or not
 as
is the case with Easy Cd extractor.

All ripping functions are configurable and all functions are accessible
using tab, spacebar, application key and options from the menu bar. In
  other words completely windows standard.

In my opinion it's a better player than winamp. Just listen to a live
 album
or concept album where the tracks merge to see how seemlessly media
 player
will do this compared to winamp.

We're all a little guilty of sticking with our favourite programs and
probably not looking around enough for alternatives. Winamp has been
 used
for years by blind users and windows media player was once not very
accessible at all. Times have changed.

  Regards.

One of the benefits of using a stand alone CD ripper such as CDEX or
 Exact
Audio Copy is that these programs are highly configurable. Both
 programs
allow you take the CDDB information about the disc and have it
 displayed
   in
many different ways, depending upon user preferences. Often, mass
 market
all-in-one offerings that do a number of tasks, such as Windows Media
player, may not do all of them well. Win Media can play audio files,
 rip
CD's, and burn CD's and do it less accessibly with fewer options than
   Winamp, EAC and Nero.

Yeah...It's pretty decent software; works well with JAWS too.

My only complaint is, when I tried to load a zip file to a DVD, it told me
it was only 384MB, when the file was really about 4.4 GB. Also, they show
an option for burning a multiple-disc zip file, but when you select that and
select the Record button, it then informs you that that option is not yet
supported...Here's a thought; don't allow me to select it from the dropbox
if you don't support the option.

Otherwise, it's decent software. It'd be nice if, for the price, they
actually notified you when there's an update. I've found updates by
periodically checking their site, but have never received email from them or
had the program try to check for updates like most normal programs do.

I've found DVD support is very good for backing up MP3's and my wife's

them being 384MB when they're MUCH larger.

 High Alex, this is John.
You can get an RCA to 1-8th ench stereo adapter cord from:
 http://www.radioshack.com
 for about $7.
You plug the 1-8th ench end of the cord in to the line in jack on your
 sound
 card.
The RCA end of the cord plugs in to your tape player or what have you.
 I hope this helps.

I would also add to this message, if you can configure CDEX then
you'll have absolutely no problem with EAC and you'll enjoy loads of
benefits including error-free rips, that's why EAC was written in the

their claims of accurate results.

Kevin,
I am thinking of writing a small program which would calculate the size
of lossy non-lossy conversions. Do you imagine people would find this of
any use. I tend to work it out in my head, but it sould be nice to have
a program which did it for you.

If you're ripping in a compressed lossy format like MP3 then you'd
probably
be better to use variable bitrate rather than constant.

RE: Getting track titles from CD when ripping to MP3

2007-10-06 Thread David Reynolds
Additionaly, it is worth pointing out that ripping to mp3 is free as far
as wmp is concerned, and you should be able to doit without messing
about with plugins etc.

I'm using media player version 10 with JFW version 5.0.

Yes, you can skip forward and backwards in a track using the seek
slider.
Just tab until you hear seek and then use your right and left arrow
keys.

Yes, there are plug ins but I personally haven't played with them to
date.

 Three questions:
What version are you talking about?
Can you move within a track as you can with Winamp?
Are there plug-ins to convert formats?

  Hi Kelly.

Windows media player is a very accessible animal these days and is
worth
anyone taking another look. It's media library is completely
accessible
 and
easy to use unlike winamp which bounces from version to version
breaking
 and
fixing the library. It is easy to select which tracks you wish to
rip
 using
only your PC cursor and spacebar. No need here for use of the JAWS
 cursor
or equivalent and no struggles trying to work out what is checked or
not
 as
is the case with Easy Cd extractor.

All ripping functions are configurable and all functions are
accessible
using tab, spacebar, application key and options from the menu bar.
In
  other words completely windows standard.

In my opinion it's a better player than winamp. Just listen to a
live
 album
or concept album where the tracks merge to see how seemlessly media
 player
will do this compared to winamp.

We're all a little guilty of sticking with our favourite programs and
probably not looking around enough for alternatives. Winamp has been

 used
for years by blind users and windows media player was once not very
accessible at all. Times have changed.

  Regards.

One of the benefits of using a stand alone CD ripper such as CDEX
or
 Exact
Audio Copy is that these programs are highly configurable. Both
 programs
allow you take the CDDB information about the disc and have it
 displayed
   in
many different ways, depending upon user preferences. Often, mass
 market
all-in-one offerings that do a number of tasks, such as Windows
Media
player, may not do all of them well. Win Media can play audio
files,
 rip
CD's, and burn CD's and do it less accessibly with fewer options
than
   Winamp, EAC and Nero.

So how do I get the track titles to either appear as the file name
or
 as
the Title field in an MP3 file I'm ripping from an audio CD?
I can use MS Media Player 10, or Audition 1.5.
Currently, I get only track and the number, with nothing in the
   information fields.

Get a cord with two male rca plugs on one and a stereo one-eighth mail
mini stereo plug on the other. Plug the rca's into your stereo's aux
input jacks and your one-eighth plug into the computer's line out.

John Price.

You have to go to the database menu alt+d then arrow down to get cd

The plug-ins allow you to encode files to different formats. For instance,
from wav to MP3, from mp3 to flak, from ram to ogg, etc.

FreeDB works perfectly well with EAC, you have to type in a valid
email address first, you set this up with f12, FREEDB options.
You'll find import, edit and export options under the CD database

Alternatively you can set it up so that each CD inserted will be
identified automatically by EAC, that's in the general options f9.

Yes that's a problem, I guess the other workaround is to read the

I'm delighted to see that a couple of other people at least are using
EAC, I am proud to stand by what I said earlier on this list, this

you're after.

   High Alex, this is John.
You can get an RCA to 1-8th ench stereo adapter cord from:
   http://www.radioshack.com
   for about $7.
You plug the 1-8th ench end of the cord in to the line in jack on
 your
   sound
   card.
The RCA end of the cord plugs in to your tape player or what have
 you.
   I hope this helps.

High Alex, this is John once again.
This is what I do when I want to do that.
If you can remember what I told you yesterday, it's the same concept.,
except only you are doing it the other way around.
I run the adapter from my sound card's line out, and in to my receiver and
 or amplifier.
It works grate! This is how I rigged up my home made speaker system for my
 computer.
But basically, you can do it either way.

from wav to MP3, from mp3 to flak, from ram to ogg, etc.

FreeDB works perfectly well with EAC, you have to type in a valid

You'll find import, edit and export options under the CD database

 clearly there.

Re: A CDEX question:

2007-10-06 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Settings for Lame MP3/Blade DLL/Internal MP3 encoder:

This paragraph describes the options for the encoder mentioned above.
However, not all options might be available for certain encoders.

Bitrate (default value 128 Kbits/s):

Determines the number of bits per second.

Mode (default value Stereo):

With the LAME encoder, you can specify how the file is encoded. The default
stereo option is recommended, but at lower bit-rates, the Joint-stereo or
Forced stereo can yield better sound quality.

Stereo: In this mode, the encoder makes no use of potential similarity
between the two input channels. It can, however, negotiate the bit demand
between both channels, i.e. give one channel more bits if the other contains
silence.

Joint stereo: In this mode, the encoder will make use of a correlation
between both channels. The signal will be matrixed into a sum (mid) and
difference (side) signal. For quasi-mono signals, this will give a
significant gain in encoding quality. This mode does not destroy phase
information like IS stereo that may be used by other encoders. This setting
can be used to encode DOLBY ProLogic surround signals.

force joint stereo: This mode will force MS joint stereo on all frames.
It's faster and it uses some special mid and side masking threshold.

Mono: This option will forcibly generate a mono file; if the input file is
a stereo file, the input stream will be read as a mono by averaging the left
and right channels.

Quality (default value Normal):

With the LAME encoder, you can specify the output quality; thus you can
trade off encoding time against sound quality. The default (normal) is
recommended for the lower bitrates (160 kbps), high quality for bitrates
160 kbps. The voice quality is more or less optimized to generate the best
quality for voice. Details of the R3Mix quality option can be found at
http://www.r3mix.net.

MPEG-I/II setting (default value MPEG-I):

The difference between MPEG-I and MPEG-II are the sample frequencies of the
input file. MPEG-I can handle input streams (WAV files) with a sample
frequency of 48000, 44100 and 32000 Hz. MPEG-II on the other hand will
support stream for 24000, 22050 16 Hz. Basically, use MPEG-II when you
want to encode with low bit rates (e.g. for voice files, or if you need
small MP3 files with reduced quality). As you can see, the lowest bit-rate
for MPEG-II is 8 Kbits/sec while for MPEG-I the lowest bit rate is 32
Kbits/s.

VBR Method Setting

The VBR method setting allows you the change the VBR algorithm which is used
for the encoding (detailed information can be found in the LAME user
documentation - see http://www.sulaco.org/mp3/doc/html/index.html). The
following selections are available

Disabled: Don't use VBR; instead encodie with a Constant Bit Rate (CBR)
VBR-Default: Use the default VBR method (currently set to VBR-MTRH)
VBR-Old: LAME's first functional approach, based on masking, bisection in
the bit domain.
VBR-New: LAME's second approach, based on masking and direct noise
allocation.
VBR-MTRH: a combination of old and new (VBR) routines
VBR-ABR: The Average Bit Rate (ABR) setting, the encoding principle is
similar to what AAC uses as VBR encoding, it is based on perceptual
entropy, but more like CBR than VBR. When you select the ABR option in the
VBR Settings box, the ABR edit box will be enabled. In this edit box you
can specify the target average bit rate. Of course, a larger bit rate will
yield generally better-sounding (but larger) MP3 files.

ABR Settings

VBR Quality Setting

This option allows you to set the Variable bit-rate option. Variable
bit-rate encoding will enable dynamically determined bit-rates that depend
on the music content of the current frame. This improves the overall quality
of the encoded file without increasing the file size. This option sets the
criteria used to determine when to increase the bit-rate for a frame. The
lower the number, the lower the criteria will be. Thus VBR_0 will yield the
best quality (but the largest file size) while VBR_9 will have less sound
quality but the file size will be the smallest. The recommended variable
bit-rate option is VBR_4. If you don't want VBR encoding, set this option to
None.

Private

When enabled, it will set the private flag in the MP3 stream.

Original

When enabled, it will set the original flag in the MP3 stream.

Copyright

When enabled, it will set the copyright flag in the MP3 stream.

Checksum

When enabled, it will add a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code in each
frame, allowing [the decoding software] to detect transmission errors that
could occur on the MP3 stream. However, it takes 16 bits per frame that
would otherwise be used for encoding, and therefore will slightly (probably
imperceptibly) reduce the sound quality.

be better to use variable bitrate rather than constant.

Re: A CDEX question:

2007-10-06 Thread Kevin Lloyd
No. Lossless has got nothing to do with bitrates being constant or variable
as such. It's all about keeping the music intact and identical to the
original. If you can do this with variable bitrates then you're going to
get the best result in the smallest file size so it's more likely that
lossless uses variable bitrates.

When I'm at billsparks radio station website, winamp comes up for all

stop winamp from trying to play windos media center's files, right?

Go to Preferences (CTRL/P), then arrow down to File Types. Tab over
twice and you'll see a list of about 60 plus different file types.
Just check and un-check the ones you want and don't want, then
back-tab to the Close button and click it.

 instance,
from wav to MP3, from mp3 to flak, from ram to ogg, etc.

A satisfactory answer could not be developed without some additional
information. do you have needs other than burning? How important is it
that you can choose between many formats for your output files or will the
MP3 format suffice. How important is keyboard accessibility? Others will
no doubt think of more avenues which should be explored but this will get
you started thinking. for now, you can use Windows Media player which you
already have on your system.

2007-10-06 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Alex,
I know of devices that will allow you to patch an audio source in to your
computer to make recordings on your computer.
But a USB device that will do it the other way around, your best bet will be
a USB sound card.
But be warned, the performance is no better then your existing sound card
that you have already.

See what I want is somthing that connects through USB to RCA because the
headset jack does not output a quality signal, leading to distorsion.

To say that Nero isn't good at anything because it does everything sounds
cute but resides far short of the truth. It sounds s if you've already
given the question some though, so, what do you think might be a good

The sound isn't distored because you're using that particular cable.
 There's something else going on.

High jerry,
I think you may have something there.
Most of today's stereo/AV receivers have phono jacks on the back of them.
Most people don't have use for them.
It works different from the line in jacks that you would plug your tuners CD
players and cassette decks in to.
The phono jacks will only receive a very low frequency like that of a moving
magnet of a turntable or a microphone.
Line frequencies are high signals, that's why Alex is getting distortion.
I patch my computer in to my mixer just to play music for a hole crowd of
people at a party, I never had the problems that he's running in to.
This is just something to consider.

Well actually, if it comes to just copying Audio CD'S and you want
accurate results all the time then Exact Audio Copy thrashes Nero,
the main reason being that with Exact Audio Copy you can set the
ofsets for your drive, with Nero you can't.

Pretty much depends on who you hear stuff from. There are only about half a
dozen widely used programs for this any.
Cdrwin, EAC, Nero, Cdex, WMP. They all work well. A couple people here
recommend EAC the most. I've been using Nero from 5 to 7 and only found
problems when my drive was causing them.
Good luck.

trouble accessing hockey audio stream

2007-10-06 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I'm having trouble getting an audio stream to play. The link is:
http://www.anaheimducks.com

I would appreciate if someone could go to the above link, locate the listen
link, and try to activate it. Yesterday, the link worked properly, i.e.
opened a new browser window where the audio began to play without incident.
Today, I click the link, and all I get back is the same page I started with.
No new window, no audio, nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

You asked how to connect your system to a stereo. That's how. If the quality
of either sucks, you'll have to deal with that by getting a better stereo,
checking the sound card out of the computer and other such.

mini stereo plug on the other. Plug the rca's into your stereo's aux

another question about nhl radio online

2007-10-06 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi again,

Are any of you other nhl hockey fans out there having trouble accessing the
audio streams online? I used to be able to use the radio page on the nhl.com
site:

http://www.nhl.com/radio/index.html

However, over the past two days, whenever I access the above link, the page
indicates that there are no games available for listening. On both Friday
and Saturday, there have been a number of games. On Friday, I was able to
access one team website, that of the Anaheim Ducks, to hear there match, but
today I am unable to hear any games either through the nhl radio page or any
of the team sites.

If anyone's got some insight into this problem, I'd love to hear it, since I
can't hear anything else right now.

Scott

When you state the inability to offset drives is, a serious shortcoming,
just how serious is this problem? In my evaluation of the program, I've
converted and copied three sets of tracks to disk without benefit of this
feature with Nero and the disk play in a standard CD player just fine.
what's supposed to happen if my drive isn't offset?

Nero is excellent for burning data but as I've stated in a previous message,
its quite hopeless for copying audio CD'S. Firstly, it has problems with
reading audio CD'S, its not as accurate as Exact Audio Copy is and then you
cannot set the offsets of your drive with Nero, this is a serious
shortcoming.

Nero 6.0 (most accessible), Nero 7.0 (95.9% accessible), and trial of

accessibleness is based off of JAWS, not Window Eyes..

Balance Control in Windows Media Player?

2007-10-06 Thread Rob Armstrong
Is there an easy way to control the balance between the left and right
stereo channels while playing a track in WMP 10?

With Winamp, I use control alt H to play only the left channel and control
alt semicolon to play only the right channel. There are settings between
these extremes with control alt K to resume playing the channels at equal
volume.

Is there a setting or plugin for WMP 10 to accomplish this? Or does WMP 11
have this functionality?

My barbershop chorus uses learning CD's with one voice part predominant on
the left channel and the other 3 voice parts on the right channel. I want
to teach other guys how to use these learning CD's more effectively using
the tools they already have if possible.

Thanks,

Rob

Well you can prove that there's a problem quite easily. Take say a
copy of a CD done with nero and one done by EAC which has been
configured, rip a solid wave file from both, compare the 2 and see
what you get, that's how serious a shortcoming we're talking about
here. The documentation which comes with EAC describes these problems
in detail.

Indeed, EAC performs an analysis of all the CD drives connected to a system
and creates offsets and individualized profiles for each of those drives.

Well actually, if it comes to just copying Audio CD'S and you want
accurate results all the time then Exact Audio Copy thrashes Nero,
the main reason being that with Exact Audio Copy you can set the
ofsets for your drive, with Nero you can't.

But because Nero does more than one thing from what i heard it is
 not
good at any of it. I want a stand-alone one.

Nero 6.0 (most accessible), Nero 7.0 (95.9% accessible), and trial
of Nero 8.0 beta ( I would say about 85% accessible). The
 percentage
of accessibleness is based off of JAWS, not Window Eyes..

 download Nero at:

Subject: another question about nhl radio online

Scott

Setting Recording Settings on a HP a1560n

2007-10-06 Thread Mike Pietruk
Hi!

Both my sighted wife and I have been unsuccessful in getting the hp A1560n
xp media center to record anything except for dead air using both Audacity
and MP3 Directcut.
We've gone into sndvol32 and played with what we believe to be the
recorder settings.
Playback is otherwise fine..
Is there any software out there (either free, shareware or commercial)
that can go in and tweek things to permit audio to be recorded.
Incidentally, lame_enc.dll is in both program files for Audacity and
Mp3directcut so we believe that the problem lies with the master sndvol32
settings for recording.

Any help would be appreciated in either how to do the tweeking ourselves
or finding software that can deal with this.

Mike

Re: Balance Control in Windows Media Player?

2007-10-06 Thread Bobcat
Get to the balance control by activating the equalizer window with
alt+v-e-g. That's View, Enhancements, Graphic equalizer. Then you have to
tab till you actually get to that window's controls. If your eq is off, you
won't need to tab far to the balance control but if the eq is on, you need
to tab past all the sliders.

It would be nice if WMP had direct control for the balance but it doesn't.

Subject: Balance Control in Windows Media Player?

Is there an easy way to control the balance between the left and right
stereo channels while playing a track in WMP 10?

With Winamp, I use control alt H to play only the left channel and control
alt semicolon to play only the right channel. There are settings between
these extremes with control alt K to resume playing the channels at equal
 volume.

Is there a setting or plugin for WMP 10 to accomplish this? Or does WMP
 11
 have this functionality?

My barbershop chorus uses learning CD's with one voice part predominant on
the left channel and the other 3 voice parts on the right channel. I want
to teach other guys how to use these learning CD's more effectively using
the tools they already have if possible.

 Thanks,

 Rob

Separating tracks in Goldwave.

2007-10-06 Thread Vinny Samarco
Hi,
I have tried to help myself by looking at the Q points in the manual, but I
haven't been able to resolve this situation.
I have a cassette tape of music which I am going to transfer to make a
cd for a friend. I want each of the tracks to not only have the silence
that is on the tape between them, but I want to put those silences on the cd
so my friend can fast forward and rewind to play whatever track he wants
ontthe cd. How do I put those tracks in the cd?Do I place them as I record
the cd, or do I do it afterwards after each song? Thanks for any help and
suggestions.
Vinny Samarco
