Look through the menus, you have something running which takes focus
away, can't say what it is, but it is though, I've often seen it.

sirius Stilleto and my comp...

2008-08-22 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi All,
I just plugged in my Sirius Stilleto 100, but for whatever reason, my comp
isn’t recognizing it. Typically, the window would appear without me doing
anything further. Even when I go into my computer, I don’t see it listed under
drives.
Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated. I wanted to transfer music files for a
road trip we’re going on this morning.

Best Regards,

Subject: Re: best player for blind person for mp3s?

All points I was going to make! From my own personal experience, I would
just like to add the following.

I have a Zen Stone with an External Speaker that I highly recommend. It
has a 2GB capacity. It has no screen, and it's totally accessible. I
upgraded to this from my 1GB Zen Stone, which also didn't have a screen
and was totally accessible. Both players have a resume feature, which
will pick up where they left off when you powered them down. this is a
global setting, so you can't have a separate book mark for each song or
file. They may come in a 4GB version now. I paid $40 for the 2GB Zen
Stone with External Speaker from Frye's.

As clifford said, there are also versions that come with a FM radio,
recorder and a display. I've heard blind people have been successful
using them, but I can't speak to that myself.

I personally use my Zen Stone for my audible.com and overdrive.com
books, since it will play WMA DRM files, and these files typically
aren't files I want to keep around forever, so the 2GB capacity isn't an
issue. I also have a few of my favorite CD's on there as well.

I also have an iRiver H20 running rockbox. This has a 20GB capacity.
It's my portable music library. rockbox is open source firmware that you
use to replace the firmware that comes on your MP3 player. It won't run
on every player, and it takes a while to be ported over to new players,
so the latest and greatest of each player aren't necessarily supported.
It also won't play WMA DRM files, so no good for audible.com or
overdrive.com books or some music subscription services.

rockbox was not developed for the blind. It was developed by and for
audiophiles who wanted to get more from their MP3 players than they
could get with the player's native firmware. It does have an eyes free
mode where menus, files and directories can be spoken. This is done with
tiny recordings, usually generated with a speech synthesizer, and it is
not done with a TTS. Rockbox is not a screen reader.

Given all of this, Rockbox is a great project and wonderful for use by
the blind. It is not as easy to install as a Windows application though,
so if you want to install it, and have it speak your files and
directories to you, it will take some reading and work on your part.
IMO, it's definitely worthwhile, but people shouldn't go into it
thinking it'll be as easy as buying a Zen Stone and hitting the power
 button.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

 Blackwell, Clifford wrote:
The question of a device is somewhat complicated. There are screenless
commercially available players like the Creative Labs, Zen Stone (1 and
2 gb models, the Creative Labs Muvo t100 (1, 2 and 4 gb models) the and
the Ipod Shuffle. There are devices built specifically for the blind
like the VR Stream from Humanware. There are also commercially
available players with much more storage that can be made to talk with
the addition of software from Rockbox.

What do you want the .mp3 player to do? Hold and play lots of music?
Play enough music for a work out or walk or trip? Do you want it to
play Audible and other recorded books?

Does size matter? The Creative Labs players and the Shuffle are all
very small. The VR Stream is about the size of a deck of cards and the
players that can be loaded with Rockbox vary in size.

Finally, what are you looking to spend? The commercially available
screenless models are generall under $75. I think the Stream is around
$300 and you will need to buy memory cards. And the other players vary
depending on availability, size and features.

 Hope this gets you started.

There are good discussions of various options on AFB Main Stream, in
AFB's Access World magazine and in a book from NBP.

 Hope this helps.

Hello there,
You can simply go to the file folder of each rip and select individual songs.
Then, copy and drag over to CD drive.Once you've moved all the songs you want,
tab over once, followed by down arrow to 'burn to disc.' That should then open
WMP and you may have to tab over and hit the ‘start burn’ button.

Olympus WS_311m and Rockbox

2008-08-22 Thread TheLearningCenter
Hello List!

You know, I have been told that this list is a place where one can get info
about anything audio-wise; therefore I asked a question about Rockbox and
Olympus WS_311m to determine whether or not they are compatible with each
other. Now, I can understand if nobody knows the answer to this question and
can continue looking elsewhere for the answer; however, it serves no purpose
for anyone to tell someone to go to a particular web site before asking such a
stupid question, which is what happened on this list to me. I am not at all
happy with this attitude by a list member, who portrays himself as a bit of an
expert on some topics. If you don't know the answer to a question or do not
want to answer it, then I suggest this person and others with a similar
attitude should shut up and be silent and let those who want to help, help.
No one ever told us list members that we cannot ask stupid or silly questions
if we don't know the answer to an audio problem. The list is here and I have
heard or read many questions asked about Rockbox and devices it is used for and
no one ever putforth such a rediculous response to something they were suppose
to be doing to help. To cap it off, this person with the negative and
superior attitude didn't even bother to answer the question, providing he knew
it.

thanks very much for time and help, as it is usually pretty good.

Re: Olympus WS_311m and Rockbox

2008-08-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I think I know the email you're referring to, and I don't think it was
mine, but let me just point out a few things

There were two questions that came into this mailing list within a few
days of each other, both asking about support of an Olympus player with
Rockbox. I'm not sure if they both came from you or not. The first email
was answered by pointing them to the Rockbox web site. I'm not sure the
same person responded to both emails or not. Actually, I'm subscribed to
so many lists, it's possible that these questions actually came to two
separate lists. Oh well, it's possible that this person felt his first
response was ignored, so his response to the second list might have had
a bit of bitterness in it. I am not sure this is the case though.

I don't have the response I think you're referring to in front of me,
but I recall when I read it that I'm not sure the author was a native
English speaker, so what you're interpreting as attitude may have just
been a particular way something was worded.

I know you're not saying this, but IMHO, RTFM is a perfectly acceptable
answer to a question. When I respond to a question I try to do more than
just point someone to a web site, but often this means I'm not doing
much more than just copying something from the web site I'm referring
to. This was the case when I responded to your question.

A question like Does Rockbox run on this particular player? is a tough
question to answer in the negative unless someone goes to the Rockbox
page itself. If someone has Rockbox running on that player then there's
a good chance someone will respond with that information, but unless
someone has recently researched that very same question, and found out
that it isn't supported, you won't get an answer. Even if someone
remembers that from the last time they went to the web site, you'll only
get what was true at that time, and things could have definitely changed
in the interim. Bottom line, is that the most accurate, up to date and
informative source of information is going to be the Rockbox web site in
this case.

Finally, I'd just like to point out that everyone needs to take some
care in how they word their responses to questions on mailing lists, so
in this sense, I totally agree with what you're saying. On the flip side
though, people also need to have a bit of a thick skin when they go onto
the internet. You're not picking and choosing the people you want to
talk to and you're going to run into all kinds. Also figure in the fact
that not everyone is a native English speaker, so things (like attitude)
may be lost in the translation, not to mention that things like sarcasm
and humor are so hard to convey in a email message. For these reasons,
you need to focus on the bottom line, which is the information you're
getting, and let some things like perceived attitude slide.

 Hello List!

You know, I have been told that this list is a place where one can get info
about anything audio-wise; therefore I asked a question about Rockbox and
Olympus WS_311m to determine whether or not they are compatible with each
other. Now, I can understand if nobody knows the answer to this question and
can continue looking elsewhere for the answer; however, it serves no purpose
for anyone to tell someone to go to a particular web site before asking such
a stupid question, which is what happened on this list to me. I am not at
all happy with this attitude by a list member, who portrays himself as a bit
of an expert on some topics. If you don't know the answer to a question or
do not want to answer it, then I suggest this person and others with a
similar attitude should shut up and be silent and let those who want to
help, help. No one ever told us list members that we cannot ask stupid or
silly questions if we don't know the answer to an audio problem. The list is
here and I have heard or read many questions asked about Rockbox and devices
it is used for and no one ever putforth such a rediculous response to
something they were suppose to be doing to help. To cap it off, this person
with the negative and superior attitude didn't even bother to answer the
 question, providing he knew it.

thanks very much for time and help, as it is usually pretty good.

Re: best player for blind person for mp3s?

No, not with the Zen Stones I was recommending.

Are you seeking a portable device or the kind of player used to play
 .mp3's on a computer?

Something causing changes in file names

2008-08-22 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I am writing on behalf of a friend who is not subscribed to this
list.
I doubt that this is relevant, however, he uses some version of
Winamp for playing his mp3 files.

My friend notes that occasionally there will be a change in the
names of some mp3 files to dos file conventions, that is, no more
than eight characters followed by a period and the mp3 extention.
These 8-character names terminate with a tilde followed by a
number which is why I characterized it as a dos file naming
convention.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency to this. He can recall
no specific event which seems to precipitate this.

So I am wondering whether anyone on this list has experienced
this. If so, what is its cause and what is the solution?

Thanks in advance.

Don Roberts
