Sorry, Windows users, I do not know how to use Itunes under your

Looking for a Station

2008-09-19 Thread Bruce Toews
Hi. I am considering bringing my Toews on the Waves radio program back
from the grave. I am looking for a station to broadcast it on. For it to
work, the station would have to meet certain criteria ... not because I
or my show are better than the rest, because I/it aren't. Just look at
the grammar in that last sentence and you'll know this to be true. I may
not be able to find a station that meets these criteria, but I figured I
could try.

1. The station needs to be on 24/7, barring technical problems and so
on.

2. The owner of the station needs to be willing/able to accept
pre-recorded shows. I'd suck at live radio if I tried it, and I know it.

3. The station needs to have sufficient automation so I can upload a
show in advance and it will play at the predetermined time.

I want the exposure that an always-on station can offer. The previous
venue for my show was wonderful: Shellworld Radio did everything they
could to accomodate me and I can't thank them enough, but the resources
and so on just weren't there to keep the station on at all times, and
that made advertising my show difficult.

If anyone knows of such a station, if such a station even exists, I'd
love to hear about it. Thanks very much.

Re: New podcast concerning the new talking iPod Nano.

2008-09-19 Thread Dane Trethowan
Excellent, very good!

Well the more podcasts we have about this sort of thing then the
better, I notice for example that there are 4 or 5 (perhaps half a
dozen) different podcasts doing the rounds on the Cobolt Speech
systems Ital device and there are already at least 2 Podcasts dealing
with the Ipod Nano 4G

Gordon Smith has done a Podcast on the Ital and (I haven't checked as
yet) but I think he was also going to do something with the 4G Nano,
anyway you can find Gordon's Playroom in the place where you'd
expect to find podcasts, in the Itunes Store of course! and yes, free
content is listed as well as content to purchase smile.

RE: Station Playlist Studio: 2 questions

2008-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Shift+insert is the command to insert tracks. Depending on your screen
reader and the way you have it configured, you may need to use its bypass
key before using this command. You can define, via the settings, folders to
search and insertion is extremely fast. There is no need to have anything to
do with hour markers just to insert tracks, in fact doing so can be
downright dangerous depending on your configuration.

Hi Quinten.

You can do what you want with Station Playlist.

To move items in a playlist, select the item you want to move and hit CTRL-X
to cut it. Then move the cursor to where you want to move the track and hit
CTRL-V. You can also delete tracks. Select the track you want to delete
and hit SHIFT-DEL.

As for inserting items into a playlist, I know Station Playlist can do this,
but I don't know how to do it within the program. You can copy items in
Windows Explorer and add them to the playlist. Here's how to do it.

Open Windows Explorer and find the item you want to add. Copy it to the
clipboard with CTRL-C. Then go to Station Playlist and select where you
want the track inserted. Then hit ALT-P to paste it in.

Hope this is useful.

Subject: Station Playlist Studio: 2 questions

Greetings all

This week I started working at a local radio station here in town, and they
use Station Playlist Studio.

Since the demo I have of it, expired, I just would like 2 small questions
answered, if possible please:

First, is it possible to move, or drag songs up and down in a playlist once
it is loaded, (similar to how you can move songs around in a playlist while
in Winamp)?
And if possible, what is the key command one should use to do this?

Second: While in SPL, is it possible to search and load a song into the
playlist if it isn't there automatically?
If so, again, what are the keyboard commands to be used?

Thanks for any and all help, it is much appreciated.

All the best

Dane's Podcasts: The Mountbatten Brailler Part 2

2008-09-19 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi Everyone!

sorry this has taken me so long but I've just completed this podcast,
just applying the finishing touches and it should be available in 24
hours or so. In this episode I do some embossing with the Braille
Writer using the Mountbatten's built-in forward translator and I
look at various ways and means. This episode deals with embossing
from Windows and the MB Com software which comes with the Mountbatten
Brailler and does not attempt to explore Duxbury, Monti or any other
Windows-Based Braille embossing applications and an explanation as to
why? is given in the recording.

I make mention of this podcast episode to alert you to the up coming
third part which I hope to start producing as soon as my USB to serial
adapter arrives and that should be early next week, what's so
important about that? Well, I'll be using it to as part of the setup
for embossing from the Mac to the Mountbatten Brailler and for those
who wish to emboss? Well you may like to give this system some thought
as the embossing software is freely available and has more
functionality than does Duxbury or Monti for Windows, just goes to
show what programmers can come up with (a job very well done Greg)
smile.

In the meanwhile, if you want to jump the queue so to speak and get
cracking with embossing from your Mac then email me and I will
forward some useful resources onto you.

Observations of Skype

2008-09-19 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi everyone!

Well I just wouldn't be without Skype now, they have a service called
Country Unlimited and for $06.00 a month you can ring any landline
in your country of choice for as long as you like, talk about giving
phone calls away smile so now I just give out my Skype User Name or
skype-in numbers and leave it at that.

Now I have a couple of questions, I have the dedicated skype cordless
phone system which plugs into my Linksys WAG200G gateway and into the
PSTN, that way I can receive calls from both services on the one
phone, so far so good but I'm wondering if anyone has any good
recommendations for USB Skype phones or cordless phones, they're the
type which plug into the USB port of a PC or Mac and (providing the
computer is powered on) you can make/receive calls through these
devices. Obviously I'm not in any need of one myself but I'm looking
on behalf of a friend who doesn't fancy the idea of sitting in front
of his PC and nor does he have the money to buy one of the dedicated
Skype phones I've mentioned here.

The second thing I'd like to comment on is the voicemail that Skype
provides, its absolutely first-class but I'd like to make it a little
better. With the Message Bank system I have on the landline, people
can leave messages and I get a SMS on my mobile phone when messages
are pending, is there any way to have Skype voicemail send out a SMS
notification? Naturally! I wouldn't mind using a little of my Skype
Credit if I had to smile.

Finally, just in case you're wondering, my Skype User Name is grtdane12

Cheers

RE: Station Playlist Studio: 2 questions

2008-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Orhan, all you need to do is arrow to the track you want the song
inserted before, and insert. I've been using StationPlaylist Studio for six
years and this works for me every time. Hour markers in Studio have a very
specific purpose and they have nothing to do with insertion.

Hi Jonathan,
I actually disagree in one respect about hour markers. Unless I am mistaken,
when you are playing a track in station playlist, and you try to insert a
track just at the last minute, it will go above the track you are playing.
This is why I use the hour marker, and all tracks can go above that. This is
very helpful when taking immidiate requests etc.

Best regards,
Orhan.

 Hi Quinten.

You can do what you want with Station Playlist.

To move items in a playlist, select the item you want to move and hit
CTRL-X to cut it. Then move the cursor to where you want to move the
track and hit CTRL-V. You can also delete tracks. Select the track
you want to delete and hit SHIFT-DEL.

As for inserting items into a playlist, I know Station Playlist can do
this, but I don't know how to do it within the program. You can copy
items in Windows Explorer and add them to the playlist. Here's how to do
it.

Open Windows Explorer and find the item you want to add. Copy it to
the clipboard with CTRL-C. Then go to Station Playlist and select
where you want the track inserted. Then hit ALT-P to paste it in.

 Hope this is useful.

 Greetings all

This week I started working at a local radio station here in town, and
 they use Station Playlist Studio.

Since the demo I have of it, expired, I just would like 2 small
 questions answered, if possible please:

First, is it possible to move, or drag songs up and down in a playlist
once it is loaded, (similar to how you can move songs around in a
 playlist while in Winamp)?
And if possible, what is the key command one should use to do this?

Second: While in SPL, is it possible to search and load a song into
the playlist if it isn't there automatically?
If so, again, what are the keyboard commands to be used?

Thanks for any and all help, it is much appreciated.

Hi Ken, my personal view is that you need to look at music in the context of
what else you might like to do on the go. For example, if you use a cell
phone or might like to, then getting an accessible cell phone with a good
music player, such as those from Nokia, might be the best option. The Victor
Reader Stream will play NLS books, which in North America is certainly a
factor, however other than this, I see no point in it at all. It is another
device to carry around. The Stream sells fairly well in North America, where
the smart phone culture is not well established. But on the Nokia N82 I
have, not only can I read print on the go with the KNFB Reader mobile, but I
can also play DAISY books, work with MP3 files in a very accessible and
flexible way, listen to Audible content and download podcasts right from the
phone. So there is no need to carry another device around with me that
duplicates those functions.

If you don't want an accessible cell phone, then there are many portable
music playback options. The Stream is certainly worth considering and that
will also read DAISY and regular texts. You might even look at an iPod
Shuffle which is very easy to operate and small. This will play music and
Audible books, but not DAISY. There are many more, the Zenstone seems quite
popular. And let's not forget the iPod Nano, which talks now.

The problem I have with these devices is the same old 1 and that comes
down to how much money you have.

If you can't afford an Ipod Nano (and I accept that perhaps you can't)
smile, then there are some other great alternatives out there and I
mention this just to show that I'm not bias towards Apple Ipods in any
way but what I do have a bias against are products which are so
expensive in order that they be accessible, in other words products
exclusively designed for the blind but that's another topic for
another day smile.

First, take a look at the Creative Zenstone line of players and (even
better than that I'm told) take a look at some of the Sandisk players.

Now if you want an Ipod that's perfectly accessible then perhaps you
can take a look at one of the Shuffles, if you can use a CD player
then you can certainly have a good shuffle.

I'm not Jonathan, though I know he'll be able to offer you some great
advice too. I can't recommend highly enough the Victor Reader
 Stream. It
may be overkill for what you want, but it is small, easy to use, 100%
accessible, and works very well with music, boks, podcasts, and the
like. You can hook your thumb drive right into it if you want to,
thoughthe best way to use it is with n SD card. Mine is 16GB. That's
 just one of many possibilities.

Hello, all. I am cross-posting this to several lists, as the
content of this podcast concerns all who are

DVR with DirecTV experience

2008-09-19 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos
My experience only.

Using JAWS 9.

You can set season pass or one time show recordings on certain DVR models using
the internet with DirecTV satellite service.

I use a Philips DSR 704 DVR box which makes sound beeps. DirecTV no longer
sells this box but you can find it at:

http://www.weaknees.com

This DVR has the original TiVo interface and not the new DirecTV interface
which many do not like.

With this unit I can find my recorded shows and delete them with the remote
control. My hope is to be able to delete such shows via the internet.

You will need sighted assistance to teach you how to go to the now Playing
list and to delete shows. The hard drive will get full sooner or later.

The unit I have is connected to phone line. Software version on the DVR is
6.4a, TiVo series 2.

TiVo signed like a 10 year agreement with DirecTV about 2 weeks ago so this is
good news.

Make sure that the DVR that you decide to get is supported by this new DVR
scheduler via the internet.

Re: New podcast concerning the new talking iPod Nano.

2008-09-19 Thread Dane Trethowan
I don't subscribe to the view of using a mobile phone for a Mp3 player
for the following reasons, the one Rick has mentioned is one I
certainly appreciate.

I have a n95 Nokia phone here with talks and yep! it plays MP3 files
but let's face it, the N95 phone's primary design was intended to make
and receive phone calls, send SMS messages thus things like MP3
players are secondary in nature and you certainly notice this when
playing MP3's. firstly you get a bit of hiss, I'm assuming this is
from the amp somewhere along the line, I find it very annoying in
quiet passages. Next the MP3 player inserts needless 2 second gaps
between songs. Third, as a phone its more important I should think to
receive calls so given the fact that the Mp3 player only lasts for 7
hours on a single battery charge then one has to wonder, how much
power that takes away from the batteries standby and talk time
capacity, so what do you say when someone is trying to reach you and
you've flattened your battery through playing MP3 files? Ah sorry you
couldn't get me, was playing MP3 files smile.

So given all that, I think it makes perfect sense to look at something
else for a MP3 player such as an Ipod, Zenstone or Sandisk, all of
which have far longer battery life and all of which are so small that
they're easy enough to carry beside something else, I've seen someone
who has a sort of a fold-out wallet, one side contains his phone
whilst the other contains his Nano, neat! and its all in his pocket.

Hi Ken, my personal view is that you need to look at music in the
 context of
what else you might like to do on the go. For example, if you use a
 cell
phone or might like to, then getting an accessible cell phone with a
 good
music player, such as those from Nokia, might be the best option.
 The Victor
Reader Stream will play NLS books, which in North America is
 certainly a
factor, however other than this, I see no point in it at all. It is
 another
device to carry around. The Stream sells fairly well in North
 America, where
the smart phone culture is not well established. But on the Nokia
 N82 I
have, not only can I read print on the go with the KNFB Reader
 mobile, but I
can also play DAISY books, work with MP3 files in a very accessible
 and
flexible way, listen to Audible content and download podcasts right
 from the
phone. So there is no need to carry another device around with me that
 duplicates those functions.

If you don't want an accessible cell phone, then there are many
 portable
music playback options. The Stream is certainly worth considering
 and that
will also read DAISY and regular texts. You might even look at an iPod
Shuffle which is very easy to operate and small. This will play
 music and
Audible books, but not DAISY. There are many more, the Zenstone
 seems quite
popular. And let's not forget the iPod Nano, which talks now.

 Trust me folks,
Symbian offers so much to blind users but, any applications other then

with the blind user in mind. However, The Victor reader Stream is a fully
featured packed unit that is blind friendly! !
And, at a price point that blows away any smart phone and Screen reader
combination. Investigate battery life for example. Or look at book marking

 isn't there yet!

Like mr. Mossen, I have em all! Every last one of them! some of which you

No, it's not my smart phone! No, it's not my Pakcmate Omni! No, it's not

Which, I might ad, is a very close second choice as I have had all the
target players and, was involved in the beginning. Some may no me as
rocker! The inspiration behind the Voice UI!

Actually; the unit I'm pulling out every night to enjoy my digital content
is indeed the Humanware Victor Stream!

It really does boast a wide array of features. Everthing you want from a
book reader and a music player!
AT $300 US you absolutley can't beat it.
It doesn't feel as slick as a smart pone but it will take more pounding for
 sure!

More over, it won't lock up and cause you to lose your place like the other
 gagets.

So, Perhaps it's time you Europians took a second look cuzz you must be a
little late in jumping on the Stream culture!
 LOL!

 Rock on...rocker!

RE: MP3 Playback Options

2008-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Keith, good for you that you have an N95. However, my comment regarding the
Smartphone culture still stands. if you look at the data, you'll see that
the penetration of Symbian devices is lower in the US than most other
developed markets. That market data is fairly readily available. There is
also plenty of survey data which indicates that the majority of US customers
feel that they only want their phone to make and receive calls, hence the
popularity of the LG and cheaper Motorola phones. Another factor is that
many of the Nokia phones do not support the US 3G frequencies, which are
different from the rest of the world.

Getting back to the subject of audio, Code Factory's DAISY player does offer
extensive bookmarking features, as does an MP3 player I use designed
specifically for audio books. I seldom see the N82 lock up.

Battery life can certainly be a concern. Some of the newer Nokia phones such
as the N78 offer over 24 hours of playback time and include handy features
such as an FM transmitter.

There are versions of the N95 where the battery life is a serious problem
for sure. There are external battery packs or even second batteries that can
mitigate this, but some phones simply perform for much longer.

The bottom line is that different combinations of solutions, and indeed just
different solutions, work for different people, and sometimes it's just a
matter of preference.
