accessible digital recorder with editing

2017-11-09 Thread Fanus
Hello Dane & list
Does one get an accessible digital recorder with editing capabilities. A friend
of mine is a member of a choir. The choir master records the songs for her but
everytime she makes a mistake she must start from scratch resulting in the
creation of a new file. They are looking for a recorder which allows for
stopping the recording and rewind to just before the error and then resume.
Does one get such a recorder? I suppose it could be handy for lawyers and
doctors.

Plex music software

2017-07-26 Thread Fanus
Hello list
Has anyone used this software and if so, is it accessible with jaws. If not, is
there a better application. I obtained a wifi storage drive and I want to
stream music from it to a speaker on the wifi network. The drive manufacturer,
Western Digital, recommends Plex for this purpose but I do not know it, so I do
not want to install if it does not work with jaws.

Actually, I could earlier but the latest version of their software is
inaccessible on PC's and on Android encryption is very weak as we use
accessibility features. The only way I can use it is Iphone but there I have
data restrictions. So I can but I can't. I am a bit irritated. Any other way?

I would have preferred Guerilla cricket but they have no crowd sound effects
and I don't like the atmosphere there.

Hi,

If I can suggest I use Tunnelbear VPN, but you will agree it is not as good as
listening directly.

Some hope for champions' trophy if cricket radio broadcasts then you may get it
on west Indian stations. If you need help contact me nearer the time.
Do keep in touch. Also, any private stations? even off screen will do.

By the way, All India radio have stopped broacasting cricket since we got this
new government in 2014 except CWC. I hate these people.

Found an article on the net that stated that the SABC will not be
broadcasting either the matches between England and SA or the champions

So we are stuck with the BBC which will not let us listen.

The only is now to get a VPN service for access to the BBC!

I think the first thing that struck me about the Echo Tap was how well
it prejects sound about a room given the size of the device which is
smaller than the Amazon Echo itself.

I have the Tap sitting on the kitchen table now where I can clearly hear
it even at very low volume, I'm in the lounge area which goes through to
the kitchen.

The first thing I did with Tap was to take it outside to enjoy the
sunshine and listen to the BBC Radio 4 Midnight news.

I would stress that this device - whilst not the best for music - does
the spoken word proud indeed! clearly audible and understandable.

By all means, listen to your music on the go with Tap but its nothing
compared to other systems around and neither we should expect it to be
at the price paid for a Tap.

I'd be most interested to hear comments from other Tap users.

I intend to use the Tap mainly for listening to Talking Books and Radio
though of course! there's no reason why I can't use it for much much
more with Alexa.

I haven't seen any mention of the Hands Free update we've been
discussing yet so perhaps its not available everywhere at this time.

Hi folks

Just received my NAD PP4 phono preamplifier. Nice little device with USB,
moving coil and moving magnet inputs, an auxiliary input for e.g. recording
cassette tapes and also an auxiliary output. Very solidly constructed
little box with also a recording volume control on the front.

With it came a programme called Vinyl Studio lite. I’m just wondering if
anyone has ever used this programme and whether it is accessible? I suppose
this is no big deal as you can use any editor like audacity for example to
do your recordings but I was just wondering.

Subject: Airfoil For Windows

Hi!

I reinstalled Windows 10 onto my system, I've been using Windows 10 for
12 months, was having problems that were getting too difficult to fix
easily so decided to completely reinstall which wasn't a difficult task
in itself.

So now I have Windows 10 up and running again so now to the annoying
bit, reinstalling all that software.

I won't be reinstalling iTunes and that's not because of iTunes itself
which is a nice piece of software but I myself have no need for iTunes
these days, more important in the audio side of things was the VLC Media
Player and - given I do a lot of streaming - the excellent Airfoil for
Windows App.

If you have some Bluetooth or AirPlay device about and you wish to
stream to them then Airfoil is truly a most useful tool you should
consider and I did say Bluetooth devices so I'll talk about the shortly.

The accessibility of Airfoil has come quite a long way since I started
using the Windows version, you can use the tab key to move between the
various panels of the software, for example each AirPlay device will
have its own panel where you can turn transmission of a stream on and
off, adjust the volume of the output and so on. The buttons aren't
labeled but they'ear easy enough to work out.

The bigger problem is entering one's licence key, it can be done but
you'll most likely need to use the JAWS Cursor or WE Cursor to find
where the information should be entered.

So what can you stream using Airfoil? Pretty much anything that exists
on your computer, capture an Applications audio for example or capture
the output of a sound device or TV Tuner.

So now to Bluetooth and the ability to handle Bluetooth is a recent
addition to the capabilities of Airfoil

If you have a computer which is capable of streaming to Bluetooth
devices you can pair your devices and have Airfoil transmit to them
independent of your computers speech and other sound.

You can also define "Groups", you might like to put say two different
devices into a group and transmit straight to the group rather than
connect each device independently, saves a lot of time.

Yes okay, sorry about the miss-understanding there , I've read those
complaints too in reviews and - whilst those reviewers are very much entitled
to their viewpoint - I think it trivia givin what the MM3's are but that's
going over old ground again.

Regarding the line-in? You're correct about audio quality depreciating
somewhat, its an analogue line-in after all and the MM1'S are based around
Digital input hence the USB cable from the computer to the MM1's.

Now I can't remember exactly whether the analogue input of the MM1's doubles as
a Toslink 3.5MM digital input? I know the input socket on the
A7 can be used as both analogue and digital, I have the A7 linked to my Sangean
DDR63+ through a digital cable so with that - the DDr63 has DAB+ Radio, CD
Player, Internet Radio, iPod dock etc -, with the A7'S ability to stream
AirPlay and it linked to my computer via USB I have a pretty powerful system to
be going on with.

You’ll just have to test things out for your particular system, press tab to
move to each button and then press the spacebar to activate that button, I know
its an annoyance but that’s exactly what I had to do to learn the layout of the
thing.

Now the buttons will be obvious as you test, one will minimise Airfoil, another
exits Airfoil and another brings up the source list, these are the devices you
can capture sound from to be streamed to your Airport Express or whatever.

Another thing you’ll have to possibly look at is your Firewall, Airfoil
probably won’t be able to transmit to your Airport Express until your Firewall
allows it to do so, in which case Airfoil will probably report an error message
and your Firewall - depending on what you’re using - may come up and ask you if
you wish to allow Airfoil to connect to your network or similar.

Re: Rogue Amoeba | Airfoil: Wireless audio around your house

2016-07-16 Thread Fanus
Hello Dane
I am sorry for asking again but for some reason I get no sound on my hifi. I
can streme via itunes, so the problem must be with airfoil or winamp. In
airfoil I tab and I hear that the device is the express and another tab shows
the volume as 100%. Is there perhaps something in Winamp I should set or if you
do not use winamp, can you suggest another player?

Yep certainly.

You stream Winamp to your Airport Express by first running Airfoil and
then pressing the "Source" button, its identified by tabbing to it, its
about the third button along and your screen reader should announce
"Toggle" as well as "Button", press the button with the Spacebar and a
list will pop-up of all the physical sound devices and software you can
capture the sound output from, Winamp should be amongst these but if it
isn't then move to "Choose Other App" and select Winamp From there.

Next press all to bring up the menu system and press T for Transmit,
select Airport Express and start streaming.

Subject: B&W speakers arrived finally

Hi all

For those of you who might still remember – my pair of B&W mm1 speakers
finally arrived today.

Getting started was rather straight forward. I simply connected up the two
speakers, connected it up to the power supply and plugged in the USB port.
Was a bit of a problem finding the power button on the side of the active
speaker but when I finally found it by accident, the computer recognised it
immediately and installed the windows drivers. It now shows up in my audio
devices as mm1.

The two rather small speakers are surprisingly heavy for their size and
extremely solidly constructed. There are two buttons on the left side of
the speaker for volume control and one on the right side of the speaker
which is the power on button. All of these buttons must be physically press
so they give tactile feedback. But there is now physicale indication where
they are located.

There is a basic little remote control that comes with the unit which I have
not yet used. You have to pul out f small tab that keeps the battery door
from closing. I messed up things a bit so the greatest part of the tab
broke off! Still have to get the rest out.

The sound that comes out of these little speakers is quite astonishing.
However, if you are looking for booming bass and screeching highs as seem to
be the case with much of the modern equipment, you are going to be very
disappointed. The sound of the B&W is subtle that is the only way I can
describe it. All the frequencies are there that you would need. And the
sound is wonderfully clear.

Am still running some tests so will get back later if anyone is interested.

Regards

Andre

I believe I've found to be a near perfect tabletop radio, the DDr-63
which comes from our good friends at Sangean

The bad parts first, this radio has a touch screen however one can
either use the Remote control or the Sangean Remote App if one has an
iPhone or Android devce.

On my system I can't get the Sangean App to work on my iPhone for
whatever reason but it works fine on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Android phone.

The DDR63 is literally packed with features and here are a few.

USB port for playback of music from a memory stick.
CD Player equipped with MP3 playback function.
Digital DAB/DAB+ for models in Australia and Europe.
Pandora connectivity
IOS dock
DLNA compatibility for playing music from a Mac, Windows machine or NAS
storage

Recording of a source to SD card or USB device.

The radio even sounds quite nice thanks to its wooden cabinet and the
sound can be further tweaked by the use of the EQ settings or you can
customise the bass and treble controls to your liking.

Unfortunately there's no way for a person without vision to set either
of the two alarms but I do know that the display is very clear - I have
this on good authority from those who can see it - so if you're part of
a couple then this unit would certainly be a great bedside companion for
the two of you.
Other nice stuff include both an analog and digital line-out, aux-in and
headphone socket.

Unfortunately the express keeps the voiceover speech on the phone or if you

rooms with a brick wall between, I can hear a bit of drop in quality,
however I use this for casual background music and then it is not a problem.

I must admit that my bt devices are cheap stuff. The price of each was less
than R400.00, so maybe there are more expensive bt devices. The problem is
that I could not find any of these in SA, so fortunately my son was in
Germany last year and he could purchase the devices there. Interestingly

cheap, it has built-in speech tellling me when it switches on and of and

Thanks for that, I'll follow this one up as I'm looking for something
that supports DLNA, my Denon AVR2113 and other devices support DLNA but
I'm looking for a "Stand-Alone" device similar to the Airport Express so
I can hook that up to other devices with a line-in.

I did know of other solutions but wanted to keep the thing simple and
cost affective as the person who started the discussion was on a budget.

Arcam for example have a complete AirPlay DAC solution which replaces
the Airport Express, its $800 though - I'm sure its worth every penny
knowing the quality of Arcam gear -. Only my musings of course but -
when it comes to audio quality - I think I'd rather put my faith in
company's with a reputation for audio quality such as Arcam rather than
those that don't have a reputation for audio quality such as Dlink but -
having said all that - I appreciate that we're all on a limited budget
and have to do the best we can do with what we can afford.

you select what you want streamed, you can stream Applications, a line-in

3.Then there is the option I may want to examine. My question is
whether with the technology available today it is possible to stream
music
in lossless format through a WIFI connection. I would like to do this
using
my media player of choice which is Foobar 2000 at present. I don’t want
to

use Itunes as I find it cumbersome and limited.

Any suggestions about which way to go?

Hello Armando and Dane
While you are so helpful, maybe I can just ask for one bit of advice at this
point in time. While I am constantly seeking for portable solutions I have
this drawback that I have a sensory problem so I find it very difficult to
type on the bluetooth keyboards. Does apple have a full size keyboard where
the keys are not on the same level i.e. like the full pc keyboards where the
rows are like little steps? Even if it is a usb keyboard?

Hello Fanus,
Not a problem. You can also join the macvoiceover list and the mac3theblind

The firewire port is basically for transferring files if you have a
supported device, as well as if you have a monitor that uses that kind of
plug. Thunderbolt is Apple's way of either plugging in a monitor, which you
would need a special adapter if you have a VGA monitor and it can also be
used to transfer data if you have the proper drive for this.

Hi!

I’ve had my new Mac Mini for about a month now and thought I’d share some
observations with you.

The Mac Mini is fast turning into my main computer of choice because of its
speed and power, here’s an example which I think illustrates the point
rather well.

I’m testing a Mp3 player, I deleted all my Mp3 collection a few weeks back
so I needed to create or download some more, given I have a good FLAC
collection it made sense I guess to convert some of those, I started with
the Beatles Singles collection 4 CD set from 1962-1970 which contains more
than 40 tracks.

Conversion was over in around 30 seconds and I was using the highest
settings with the LAME MP3 encoder to get the best I could out of it, on my
Windows desktop and other machines such a conversion task would have taken
around 20 minutes or even longer.

I spoke to someone about this and he reckoned it would have only taken 5
seconds or so with his Mac Pro machine and so it ought to given that his
machine contains 8 quad core i7 processors , mine only contains one
but I think the major contributing factor here is the Fusion Drive that my
Mac Mini uses, put simply a fusion drive is a 1TB standard hard drive with a
128GB SSD drive incorporated into the design, when idle the operating system
decides what resides on the SSD and what doesn’t based on the most accessed
files, most run applications and so on.

Now I’m not writing this post as an advertisement for Mac Mini machines as I’m
sure similar can be accomplished with Windows PC’s, I’m writing this because
I’m amazed at just how far we’ve come, encoding and creating of MP3 files
used to take hours if not many minutes not all that long ago.

archos studio recording problem

2014-03-13 Thread Fanus
Hello list
I don't know whether this question is allowed on the list
but if not, Please forgive me. I try to record via the
line-in of my Archos Studio 20GB player. As long as sound is
coming in, it records but if there is just a moment of
silence then the recording stops and the file is closed. I
looked everywhere in the settings but I can not find a
setting that has to do with silences.
If this is not off topic, can someone please suggest a
solution? I may add that I installed the latest rockbox
version for the Archos but even if I reinstall the original
the result is the same.

I'm looking for some kind of recording program free if

record in .wav format. It does not have to have any

Does anyone know of something like that that will run on

something simpler which
can record in good quality sound in a simple way.

Okay foks, here's an accessibility enhancement in Airfoil
For Windows I've been waiting for, I've written to the
developers about the issue of selecting the target for
transmission of input source for quite some time.

Up until recently the only way you could select a target was
to take pot luck by tabbing around the screen or moving the
mouse, pressing a button and hoping for the best.

Some Screen reading software such as WE allowed labeling and
customisation of the buttons but this didn't seem to work
all that well but it worked well enough in most cases.

Now output points such as Apple TV'S, Airport Express units,
Iphones, Ipads and other computers running the "Airfoil
Speakers" application are listed in the menu which is
accessed by pressing the "Alt" key, select the device you
want to transmit to, wait a couple of seconds and
transmission of your selected source starts. Conversely if
you wish to stop transmission, select the device from the
menu and press return, transmission of audio stops.

Under new versions of Airfoil, you can transmit your source
to multiple devices or instances of computers/Iphones/Ipads
running "Airfoil Speakers" on your network.

Re: program to turn text files into audio files but using eloquence

2011-09-20 Thread Fanus
Hi Andre
If you install the trial version of k1000 (kurzweil reader)
you get eloquence. If you then use balabolka you can convert
text to a .mp3 with the jaws Reid voice. I do not know about
the UK english Reid voice.

Hi all

I know there are several programs that would allow you to
turn text files
into audio files in mp3 format using the sapi voices on the
computer.

However, I find the very odd phrasing of especially the
realspeak voices a
bit difficult to understand.

Hence my question: Has anyone ever written such a programme
which turns
text files into audio files using the Eloquence speech
synthesizer? That
would also mean if you e.g. like the british voice, it then
uses the british
voice as it is already installed on your computer?

Just curious.

Andre

Re: latest winamp which works with jaws

2011-09-02 Thread Fanus
Hi Chris
Well, I downloaded and installed ninite but when I run it,
it said that my installed version is newer but mine is
v5.08D and I am sure there are later versions. On the site
it says Ninite looks for the latest version but this is
obviously not correct.

You can generate a Ninite installer of Winamp at
www.ninite.com/winamp.
The latest and greatest will work providing you tell Winamp
to use the
classic and not the modern skin.

Hello List
All of a sudden I hear no sound when I try to play a song in

Can someone please help.

Hi I tend to agree. It must be because in our small comunity
of blind folks.
They are finally doing something about accessibility.
I commend them for that being a new Apple customer myself.
