RE: GoldWave question.

2008-08-21 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

I've never done it, but I think in principle, it should be possible:

Open the file.
Move the start marker to the end of the file.
Start recording with control f9.

When finished, be sure to move the start marker to the beginning of the
whole file with control home, or just press control a to open the
selection to all, or you may think you only recorded the new stuff and
lost the old.

I think this is right, but I'm not sure.

Hi gang:

Is it possible to continue recording material to a GoldWave file which
has been previously closed? I know how to insert data from another
file.

Thanks much.

Re: sheet music program

2008-05-21 Thread John Sanfilippo
My personal opinion is that this is like very poor ocr. There is a program
whose name I now forget. But they got $70 for the license a few years back
and it just did do such a great job, not without a struggle which I never
bothered to endure.

I think if you google wave to midi you'll find something.

Re: sheet music program

2008-05-20 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

If you wish to print a musical score, there are a few possibilities, but
none of them is very automatic or simple. You'd have to do some work and
learning, and they tend to be expensive.

1, The Braille Music Kit at
http://dodiesis.com
lets you write braille music, and create playable midi files and printed
scores. The printed scores are provided by a print scoring program called
Finale,
http://makemusic.com
and Finale can send printed scores to bmk so that they get turned into
braille scores.

2, Sonar,
http://cakewalk.com
is a music audio and midi sequencing program which has the ability to print
the music which you record. This is not intended for music printing and is
not as full featured as a dedicated scoring program, but it can produce
draft quality print music.

3, You can visit the DancingDots home page for additional ideas on music
printing.
http://doncingdots.com

Hope this helps,
John S

RE: zen 2gig stone

2008-04-01 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

I think this one is called zenstone plus.

I have partial vision and found that the stone works sort of like this. I
say sort of, to cover my uncertainty, but this has been my experience:

Hold zen plus so the flat screen faces you and is on the left side.

On top left is an audio out jack. Bottom left is the USB connector.

Top right has a rocker switch. Press this on its right side and hold it to
turn it on. I'm not quite certain what pressing it on the left side does.

I often found that, after not pressing buttons for a while, the first key
press is merely a wake up call and does nothing, so keep that in mind.

Now, facing you on the right is the more or less standard joy control, a
circle with a button in its center.

The center button brings up a menu. When this menu is active the right and
left edges of the circle move thru things like file play, radio, recorder,
and who knows what else. But the files play mode I believe is furthest left.
When you think you have the mode you want, press the center button to
confirm your choice.

So, assuming you start playing files, press the center button, then press
the right edge of the ring to move to radio, then press center again and the
radio should be playing. Now use the left and right buttons, you know what I
mean, to tune to the station you want. Experiment with this, because tapping
gets different results from pressing and holding, I think.

Now, to get back to playing files, press that center button. Remember, you
might have to tap it twice because the first tap just says hello to the
unit. Once it wakes up, press the left button and confirm with center.

As for the other modes, I'm not going there. I only know that I've
accidentally recorded my voice but cannot pin down how. I gave that unit to
a sighted friend.

I have the 2 gig model with a tiny speaker and 2 of the 1 gig zens, none of
which have screens and are all friendlier to people not looking at a
display.

Hth,
Js

Mp3 player/recorder with line in?

2008-02-19 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

A friend of mine wants to record things like the radio and tv using some
sort of modern mp3 or similar audio player/recorder. We're looking around
for any such unit which is inexpensive and has a line in jack. Are there any
such things available?

I know of the PlexTalk, and I think MileStone311 also can do this, but I was
hoping to find something a bit less expensive.

Perhaps the Edirol R9 may also do this, I'm not sure, but that comes with a
price too.

He has a Creative Moovo, I think he said, It does what he wants, but you
must crawl thru a dozen menus to do it.

Help appreciated.

ReplayAV, cap file, and tuning

2008-02-16 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi all,

Re capture files: Sometimes when Replay 8 captures, it captures to a
file.cap file. Sometimes it captures to file.asf. When it captures to asf,
the file will play in WinAmp or something. When it captures to cap, Windows
has no idea what to play it in. All I can do is wait for Replay to convert
the cap file to the format of choice, usually mp3. Is there a way to get
Replay to always capture to a playable format? Or is there a way to play a
cap file directly?

Re tuning: Many times, when focused on a show or radio station, whether it
is capturing or not, pressing control t plays the audio or audio and video.
But, sometimes, I see/hear that a show is capturing, but whenI press control
t to hear the current show, nothing happens. Is this normal, or have I got
something wrong?

Replay AV Suite

2008-02-07 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

I'm a newbie to replay AV, having just obtained version 8.47, I think.

I recently set up a couple of scheduled stream captures, but found that the
same 15 second segment had been recorded several times rather than recording
throughout the length of the program. I wonder what may have caused this and
what I may be doing wrong?

Another show recorded for about 45 minutes, then duplicated that same
segment. Is this some kind of permission thing?

Also, I note that the split dialog seems to have a number of split fields
whose field titles are not spoken by jaws as I keep pressing tab. Yet when I
look around with the jaws cursor, I do not find quite so many fields. I hope
someone understands what I'm talking about.

Help appreciated,

RE: Recording Question

2008-02-02 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

I sometimes use a plexTalk, the first model, not the second. Think of it
like a cassette recorder: If you record a song, say, and just begin playing
the piano just after you press record, that's what you will hear when you
play back the tape from the very beginning. So, after you've initialized
your new recording file, I forget just how at this second, you press the
record key, once to get ready, a second time to actually record, and begin
reciting the title, unless you'd rather not announce the title for some
reason.

Now, if you mean, how do you give it a digital name, as in how do you name
the plextalk's files, basically, you don't. That is all handled by plexTalk.
It creates folders with names like,

Bookdir00
Bookdir01
Bookdir02

And inside each folder are one or more mp3 files and some management files.
The mp3 files have names like,

A1.mp3,
A2.mp3

What I would do, to be safe, is copy those a.mp3 files somewhere else,
leaving the original files untouched. Then go rename the copies to your
heart's content, keeping the mp3 extension, of course.

Hth,
Js

I found the following note that appeared in one of these mailing

 it all.

I've just been made aware of a firmware update for the zen stone.
It's been available since August so some of you may already have
updated your players but if not there's a link below where you can go
to download the update. The biggest change is to reduce the time it
takes for the stone to start playing. This has been reduced from 15
seconds to less than 5
seconds.Just download the software, connect your stone and then
run
the update. It takes seconds to
complete and is very straightforward. I did lose my place in my
current playlist so you might want to consider this if you're half
 way through a book.

I found the following note that appeared in one of these mailing lists.
I've installed this update, and I think Kevin pretty much says it all.

I've just been made aware of a firmware update for the zen stone. It's
been available since August so some of you may already have updated your
players but if not there's a link below where you can go to download the
update. The biggest change is to reduce the time it takes for the stone
to start playing. This has been reduced from 15 seconds to less than 5
seconds.Just download the software, connect your stone and then run
the update. It takes seconds to
complete and is very straightforward. I did lose my place in my current
playlist so you might want to consider this if you're half way through
a book.

RE: Winamp 5.5

2007-11-09 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

I just figure winamp figures its name is winamp video. Long as it
works, so what.

Say, is there a way to stop jaws from announcing the title while
something is playing? It isn't constant, but it's enough to be annoying
when you don't want it. If it were really critical, I'd press insert v,
end, space, enter, and shut jaws off temporarily. But I thought perhaps
there's a setting somewhere I might know about.

Advanced thanks,
Js

winAmp tutorial

2007-11-01 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

As long as folks are sharing tips on getting the most out of winamp, I'm
wondering if there's some plain text documentation around which at least
summarizes things this wonderful software can do. There's a lot here,
the interface is rather unusual and a tutorial explaining important
features would be nice to read thru.

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this is an old subject.

Subject: this is a bit lengthy, how to convert files using winamp

 Hello everyone

 I've seen some
questions about this on a couple lists so I thought I'd write this up.

It is a bit lengthy as the subject line says but I hope you'll stick
with it. A while ago, the subject of converting files using Winamp
came up, and I thought I'd explain the process in some detail
for those who are interested. Unfortunately, real audio files don't
really work well with Winamp nowadays. At least, that's been my
experience. If anyone's been able to get them to play in Winamp 5.5,
 please please let me know!

However, if you have a WMA file that you want as an mp3, or if you
have a cd track as a wav file that you want as an mp3, you can use
Winamp's discwriter plugin to do this task. So, here's how you do it,
step by step. Remember, if you have an interest in this, save the
e-mail somewhere and go back to it later so you can perform the steps.

 Ok, here we go!

 1. Fire up Winamp, you knew that one would be in there.

 2. now find the file that you want to convert and open it up in
Winamp, either by pressing enter on it or through the open file
dialogue. 3. Ok, now press the letter v to stop it, we don't want it
to keep playing. 4. now here's where the fun starts. go to the
preferences, control plus p of course.
 5. go to the plugins section and then choose output in the tree view.

 6. now tab over to the list of plugins, and focus on the one called
the Nullsoft Discwriter plugin, your version number may vary but it
 all comes to the same.

 7. now, it's time to configure it so that we can tell what type of
file to convert to. so tab to the configure button.

 8. now you're going to be in a dialogue with some buttons in it. the
first one will determine where your output file, that is to say your
converted file will be saved. you may hear something like, output file
location c:\doccuments and settings...my music button. If you press
that button, a dialogue will pop up and you can then determine where
your file will be saved. 9. now that you've done that, you'll be back
in the dialogue, and the next thing you'll see is a checkbox that
says, output to directory containing source files, and by default, this

is unchecked. This is so that you can have your converted file in
exactly the same folder as the original file was.
so check that if you want the file to go there, i would do that for
simplicities sake. You can always move it later.
 10. Next checkbox you'll see says, display save as dialogue for every
file. This is so that if you're converting an entire list of files,
you'll be able to determine where each file goes. I would imagine
that you would probably want them all to go in the same folder, but
maybe not? so check that if you like, i normally leave it as is
because usually I'm only converting one file. This is unchecked by
 default.
 11. Next up, we have a combo box that determines if there are or
numbers at the beginning of your outputted file name.
the choices you have are, disabled, 1 digit, 2 digits, 3 digits and
 4 digits.
I can't imagine why anyone would actually want 4 digits, that is
unless you're converting literally thousands of files, which i've
never done and probably won't ever do. If I'm converting something
from an album i like to at least have a number at the beginning of
the file name, 01, or 02, depending on where you are in the playlist
of
 files.
but if you want to disable this, you can.

 12. Next, we have a combo box that determines the title format, the
one by default is % title %. this means you get

RE: SanDisk Sansa e200 Series MP3 players.

2007-04-15 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi Jim and listers,

Well, this was my experience with this product. I can hope that it was
just my bad luck and or lack of patience, and that it will be much nicer
for someone else, but, in my experience it was not especially friendly:

The price per unit was around $90, a really attractive price for what
this promised to be. The physical size and apparent layout seem very
nice. The model I was interested in played video and had a 2gb capacity.

But to change anything in the setup of the unit, you had to use the
software and it was not at all accessible. I could not get past the open
screen or access the cd to get at some alternate setup program.

The Sansa is set to come up in a special music mode (I forget the
precise letters) which interfaces with windows media player. I couldn't
get wmp to announce what it was finding on the unit so that kinda turned
me off.

There's supposed to be a way to set the unit to work in a more general
mode where it appears as a usb drive, but I believe that had to be set
via the software. So, around it went.

Unfortunately, I had to return the product.

Regards,
js

Audacity questions

2007-02-18 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

1. How does one move forward and back in the latest version of Audacity?

2. Can audacity work with midi files without converting the midi to
audio? It seems to offer this ability, but when I try importing a midi
sequence nothing seems to happen.

It does not work here for me at all.

RE: midi to wave/mp3

2007-01-11 Thread John Sanfilippo
There actually is a pay program midi to mp3 which does this very easily.
Only problem I've had with it is that it will clip the end of the sound.
So I suppose you can counter act this by recording extra space and some
unheard midi message such as a pedal up down a few seconds after the
actual sound stops. I haven't tried this and I haven't registered the
program.

Hi,

You can't convert midi to wav or mp3. All midi is is a set of musical
instructions that your soundcard works with.

You could use total recorder, or something like goldwave, turn on the
what
you hear option in your soundcard's volume, and record it that way
through
the soundcard.

Mp3clip, what am I missing?

2006-12-25 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi all,

Everyone raves about mp3split. And it appears to me that it could very
well be something to rave about. The interface seems straight forward.

But I'm having a problem:

I set the source file name by browsing for it, so it's not like there's
a typo there; I set the start points of songs accurately; Then I set the
destination file and press the save button. Nothing seems to happen.

Ok, I tab around looking for a Go or Start button but find none.
so I use my mouse cursor to look for a start word or something. I find a
start group and try clicking on it.

I get an offer from windows to report an error. When I look in my
destination folder x0.mp3 is there but it has 0 length.

What am I doing wrong? Why isn't the Go do it button as easy to access
as the rest of the buttons?

Help much appreciated.

Best of the season to you,
John S

Subject: Them little round plastic things

Hi all!
I'm a user of 2 very different computer systems here, I use standard
PC'S with Windows and LINUX and I use my trusty Mac so when I heard
about a small sound device that could be plugged into all my machines
without any need for drivers I was most interested hence the arrival
of my Imic today.
I felt cheated there for a while when i received the box, something
as small as this promising me good audio quality? My missgivings
increased upon the opening of the box to discover that the Imic is
about 1 and a half inches round, it looks almost comical, like one of
those toys we used to play with as kids, like an oversized watch or a
standard sized lollypop but the outside looks I can assure you having
tested this little beauty are truly deceptive.
The Imic plugs into a USB 2.0 port of your computer and as I've
already stated, whether you're a fan of your Mac or of your PC makes
no difference whatsoever, just plug the Imic in and you have another
sound device, great for those laptop systems that don't have a full
sound device built-in.
The layout of the Imic is extremely simple, just 2 3.5MM minijack
stereo sockets and 1 switch. One socket is for line-out whilst the
other is for line-in/stereo microphone, the switch toggles the line-
in socket between microphone and line-in.
So how does it perform? just as good as any other sound card or
device as I said earlier, I'm amazed.
How do you know its connected? With the Mac you see it available as
an audio input/output device. In Windows, you'll see it in the list
of audio devices under the audio tab in Sound.
How much is an Imic? An absolute steal at $50.00 Australia, that's
what I paid for mine.
A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its
contents, I've had no need to.

___

n-Track Studio is an audio MIDI multitrack recorder for Windows. A
complete recording studio in your PC: all you need is a soundcard and
some free space on your hard disk to store audio data. The program
supports simultaneous recording from multiple 16 and 24 bit soundcards,
and
real-time audio
effects can be applied non-destructively to each track, allowing the
user to listen
immediately to the result of a change in the parameters of an effect.
Built-in effects include Reverb, Dynamics, Multiband Compression,
Echo, Pitch Shift,
Chorus Parmetric EQ, Linear Phase EQ Spectrum analyzer.
The program can use third party DirectX and VST plug-ins to process
in real-time audio
signals in a number of different ways. Effects can also be used to
process the recorded
signal in real-time so that the computer can act as a multi-effects
device. MIDI tracks can be imported and exported to regular MIDI files,
and
edited using
the built in piano-roll based MIDI editing.
When all the tracks have been recorded and all the settings are correct,
all the tracks can be mixed down to a single wave file for recording it
to an audio CD using a CD recorder or for distributing an mp3 version
through the Internet.

Tracy! I believe that the official opinion is that ProTools under

I believe you'd do much better with this question on MIDIMAG. You

Poikosoft E z c d d a extractor 9.x wav/mp3 issue?

2006-04-19 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hi,

One of the file output formats offered by this program is called
something like .wav (Fraunhoffer) mp3 codec. When I choose this format,
I get a nice surprise. Files which are about half the size of mp3 128
bps which to my ears sound every bit as good. But there's one very
puzzling fact. The files are saved as .wav files. WinAmp will not play
them. But, if you rename the file to .mp3, it plays in winAmp and in wmp
on a pac mate.

Why aren't these file simply named .mp3 in the first place? Does anyone
know how to deal with this?

Thanks,
Js

JAWS. Anyone else having the same problem?

I haven't tried reaper yet, though I intend to. Is Reaper trying to open
your card as asio? This would explain it, as Asio always gets priority
over WDM streams.

RE: M3u extensions and there placement

2005-11-29 Thread John Sanfilippo
How about just using shortcuts?

I'm not totally sure about this, but I believe part of the problem is
that those m3u files highly depend on being located in the same location
as the files they index, or else they must be edited to contain correct
file path information. I no longer bother with them and delete them.
Better still, I disable their creation in my ripper.

In my situation, I do the following:

I have a folder called lyrics. In it are textfiles containing the lyrics
of tunes. Each file corresponds to a tune.
I have another folder containing sub folders, containing subsubfolders
of mp3 files.

Now, what I want is to have shortcuts pointing to the mp3 file and the
corresponding text file. I used to make a special collection folder and
copy the mp3 file and the text file there, which means that I now am
using gobs of disk space because of all these duplicated files. One day
a new way dawned on me:

I now have a shortcuts folder, or folders, each of which may contain
shortcuts to the mp3 files and text files of my choice. I can pick and
choose from anywhere on my system, including external drives but the
shortcuts are all centrally located.

How to make the shortcuts: I'm using Windows XP, the Explorer ap.
Go to the mp3 file using Windows Explorer.
Press the windows applications key for the context menu.
Press s until you hear make shortcut., and press enter.
A short cut to MyFile.mp3 is made in the same folder as MyFile.mp3 You
will move this and other shortcuts to your shortcuts folder now or
later.

I do the same thing for the text files, but in that case only one press
of s for create shortcut is necessary.

I copy all the shortcuts to the shortcuts folder and rename them like
this:
MySong1.m
MyLyrics1.t
HelloAgain.m
HelloAgain.t
BabyFace.m
BabyFace.t

I take the trouble to totally rename the shortcuts because Windows names
them exactly the same as the file, so that if you should go looking for
files like myMusic.mp3 the file and the shortcut will show up in the
list. I find this quite confusing and undesirable. Incidentally, if
anyone knows a better work around for this matter of excluding shortcuts
in such a find, I'd be happy to hear about it.

Another nice thing about renaming shortcuts is that they provide a way
of giving files aliases without renaming the actual file. The shortcuts
can be renamed to anything you like. You can have N different shortcuts
with different names pointing to the same file, so that if the actual
file is 03King of the Road.mp3, you can have shortcuts like the 3 which
follow:

Trailers.m
142Dillan's best song
0GuessWhatIAm

I may use Explorer to point to this folder, press the aps key, press p
until I hear play in WinAmp, and just enter. The contents of the
shortcuts folder containing my particular collection plays.

Now, having said all this, I confess I've heard an awful lot about the
use of, for instance, the WinAmp library, and/or the library system of
any of the media players, but I've never touched them. However, this
may very well be exactly what you're looking for if you want to try to
learn it.

Hth,
Js

Sony memory stick reader for windows xp?

2005-11-13 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

I have an old Sony ICD something or other memory stick recorder. I also
have a floppy disk adapter which allows a pc to read the memory stick
like a disk. When I insert the loaded floppy adapter into my pc, it
offers to format the drive. I do not wish to erase the material on the
memory stick. But It may well be that allowing this will establish the
usability of the adapter with xp. My hunch is that, either Windows xp
already has the necessary driver and just wants to format the memory
stick, or, I do need to get an xp driver for this floppy adapter, or,
this equipment is outmoded altogether and I need new equipment.

I kind've tried using the sony site to find the answer, but it's like
looking for a needle in a haystack.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for a tip.

Ptr2, from memory, was RE: Looking for a reasonably high end recorder

2005-10-20 Thread John Sanfilippo
Here's what I recall from a recent conversation with a vendor:

1. ptr2 is a bit larger than ptr1, with the controls somewhat more
recessed.

2. It now has a stereo mic input; the internal mic is still mono.

3. Guide speech volume and playback volume no longer operate separately.

4. When ptr2 is connected to pc, both the CD and the flash card are
accessible to the computer.

5. Only type 1 flash cards are now supported.

6. There are two modes of operation. 1 is a basic record an playback
mode which has no fancy editing features. 2 is the usual features we are
accustom to on ptr1.

RE: taking notes in music class

2005-08-18 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

I would venture these two observations from my limited perspective:

1. If you are going to use Sibelius in a class situation, you'd better
learn it backwards, forwards and upside down, basically know it like the
backof your hand so that you can write quickly. If you can do it, more
power to ya.

2. I think the cat's mee-ow, would be to have a program which would
enable the writing of text and music for purposes of explanation and
discertation. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think
Sibelius does that. If it does, I'm all ears!

Hello,

Did you ever experienced having to take notes in a collegial class in
music
with the program like Sibelius Speaking? I have a question rather not
about
Sibelius itself, but about its use in such conditions as a music class.
I
am now about to start my college studies in Music, much of which will
consist of Theory. This means that
much of the notes I will be taking will include small musical scores
within
regular texts. My question is how do you follow in a regular music
class
when it comes to note-taking, since notes can't be written down with
Sibelius as speedily as in the sighted way, let alone writing text
nearly at
the same time?

Thanks,
