Re: Winamp and JAWS 10

2009-02-23 Thread Wes Derby
Yeah...It seemed to happen a few Winamp updates ago, but when I went
to JAWS 9, the problem went away, but came back when I went to JAWS
10. Very odd behavior. Certainly an annoyance.

RE: mp3 players best for totally blind people

2009-02-22 Thread Wes Derby
Kathy.

If I remember right, the Victor Stream will play some Overdrive MP3 books.
I'm guessing these are unprotected, but I could be wrong.

As far as I know, the only DRM-protected files the Stream plays are those
from NLS and those from Audible.

Hi, all! Do the Victor Stream and the PlexTalk play digital rights
manangement (DRM) protected files? I was thinking they didn't. Can you
play books from NetLibrary or Overdrive on those two players?
Peace,
Kathy

Winamp and JAWS 10

2009-02-22 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

I'm running the latest version of Winamp, and when I try to use the search
box in the Audio section of the library, an X is inserted after I hit the
spacebar if I'm entering an artist with two words in the name.Say, Chris
Knight, or Emerson Hart. It'll come out Emersonx Hart. This happens on both
my laptop on desktop. I'vee tried recompiling the scripts, and this has
done no good.

What do I need to do? Or arre there are newer scripts that have come out
since the release of JAWS 10?

I'm using the default scripts that came with JFW.

Thanks.

Anyone Ever Tried the XM2Go Software?

2009-01-24 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

I have the new XMP3 receiver from Pioneer and over-all like it. Of course,
as a totally blind person, I do need sighted assistance with the menus,
which is an accessibility issue, but typical of Sirius and XM...Unlike the
MyFi, from what I can tell, you can't even just hold down the "OK" or "XM"
button on this unit to have it add an artist to your TuneSelect listings.

Anyhow, with this unit, you can hook it up to your computer to transfer MP3s
to the MicroSD card if you want, but you can also use the XM2Go software to
schedule your recordings, which you couldn't do with the old MyFi. Has
anyone done this with a screenreader and had any success? If it doesn't
work right "out of the box" (it is a free download from xmradio.com), has
anyone written any JAWS scripts for this software to make it accessible?
I'm currently running JAWS 10 with Windows XP. Any assistance is
appreciated. I'd like to be able to set up recordings of Opie & Anthony,
Eddie Trunk, and certain shows on NFL Radio (part of my best of Sirius on XM
package) without having to rely on my wife for assistance.

Thanks.

Wes

RE: Winamp version 5.55 Build 2345 Beta is now Available

2009-01-24 Thread Wes Derby
I'm looking forward to trying this one out. Ever since upgrading to JAWS 10,
when I do a search in the audio section of the Winamp media library, an "x"
gets inserted whenever I hit the spacebar...Thus making most of my searches
come up empty. Hopefully, that little glitch will go away with this update, or
someone can offer a suggestion. This seems to happen every once in a while
with Winamp after a JAWS upgrade.

RE: Itunes 8 now accessible

2008-09-12 Thread Wes Derby
Interesting observation...I have a pretty good "smart" phone (HTC 6800, Windows
Mobile 6.1), and would never think to use it as my primary music player for one
reason...Not nearly enough memory. I think it has 128MB on-board, and came
with a 512MB mini-SD card. Granted, I could buy a bigger SD card, but I doubt
I could get one up to 16GB. I think this is why it's still more common in
America to see people with both a phone/PDA device and an MP3 player
separately. That, and from what I've heard, the Europeans and Asians have
better phones than we do as far as memory, and being able to do multiple things
well. For instance, a lot of my friends who used to use the Blackberry always
claimed that it was great for email, web browsing, and even music, but awful as
a phone. I have to say, the HTC (Sprint Mogul, in my case), seems to do all of
it very well.

Saqib, I completely agree with you. I have no need for a Nano when I have an
N82. But I think the reason why iPods and other stand-alone playback devices
are so big in North America is that they have nowhere near a strong a
smartphone culture as Europe, Asia and other places.

Forgive me for my comment folks. Isn't it just easy enough to listen to
music from your phone or preferred MP3 device. It's taken Apple so long to
meet the VI sector half way with the accessibility issues. Their attitude
was sod the blind and who ever can't access our devices or software. It's
good that Apple are getting their head around the accessibility factor but
this wasn't the case before.

RE: Itunes 8 now accessible

2008-09-12 Thread Wes Derby
That was actually one of the things I suggested when I emailed the
accessibility address at Apple, listed on the page talking about the
improvements to iTunes and the Nano. In the response I got, they said the
feature was new, and they were definitely looking for feedback and that they'd
pass that tip along...In the meantime, they suggest just carrying less music
with you and changing out your files often since, as they put it, "most people"
don't use the larger-capacity players anyway...But they seemed to think it was
a good idea. So, maybe next time arund.

I think I might pick up one of the 16GB units and give it a shot; see what
they've done anyway. It's too bad the speech functions aren't
backwards-compatible; I'd just install them on my 30GB IPod Video. :)

The nanos go up to 16GB. I am really curious, given the technique they are
using to do the speech, why it's not available on all the newer units
including the hard drive-based players.

RE: Itunes 8 now accessible

2008-09-11 Thread WES DERBY
This is some great news, but I have to admit I wish they'd included some of the
larger-capacity units like the 120GB unit for those of us with huge music
collections. I've put in a suggestion to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Either way, I think I'll pick up a 16GBunit when one of the Seattle Apple or
Best Buy stores gets them in-stock.

CD/DVD Drive Problem

2008-04-14 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

Okay, here's a strange one, and I can't seem to figure out how to stop it.
Lately, my computer thinks it has a virtual CD/DVD drive. Now, I have two
drives, and they're both there, but now there's a third one which doesn't
really exist, but it's decided to be the G drive. I've tried removing the
"driver" in the device manager. That works until I reboot the system, then
I come back and it's there. Also, when it reinstalls itself, for some
reason, it will often decide to call itself the F drive, and change my hard
drive to the G drive, which then makes my iPod the H drive, screwing up my
Voicebox shortcut for Rockbox, as well as my Winamp library since all my
music's on the external drive. I know how to change the drive letter for
the hard drive, but don't see any of my CD/DVD drives listed when I change
drive letters, so am not sure how to make the virtual maybe the Z drive or
something.

But, what I'd really like to know is, how do I get rid of this "virtual
drive"? I first noticed it either around the time I installed Ashampoo
Burning Studio 7 (works very well with JAWS for making CDs and DVDS, by the
way), or after I ran RegCleanXP...I did both about the same time, and that's
when this extra drive started popping up.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Spiral Frog validation

2007-11-18 Thread Wes Derby
I've actually been in touch with them about this...They're interested in
pursuing the audio captcha, but seemingly only if they can find a free way
to do it, and if one of us who needs it does all the research and stuff for
them. Their response, when I told them about how Digg and Craigslist
utilize audio was "Do you know what system they use? Is it free? Let us
know, and we'll consider it". Since I work, have a wife and kid, and have a
life, I haven't really had time to research HOW to implement the audio
captcha, but I'll admit I was tempted to write them and tell them they
should really consider putting one of their staff members on it to get the
necessary information.

Let's face it; filesharing would become less popular and less necessary if
more of these services were more accessible/user friendly, and had all the
music we want. :)

Re: question about CDDB and winamp 5.5

2007-11-18 Thread Wes Derby
Very strange...I'm running 5.5 and haven't had this particular
problem...Although, on my system, it now appears to be called MusicID From
Gracenote, instead of CDDB.

In fact, I just popped in a CD now, clicked the "MusicID" button from my
drive in the library, and the data was downloaded no problem.

Captchas Re: Winamp Question

2007-10-18 Thread Wes Derby
I know this is a bit late, but something Chris said got me thinking...I
notice Winamp's forums are "powered by vBulletin". I've also noticed, for
about six years now, the ANYTHING powered by vbulletin has the captcha code
associated with sign-up. I've found three lists (two Opie and Anthony fan
lists and the Orbitcast forums) who are willing to assist blind/visually
impaired users in signing up. However, most of the vBulletin powered lists
don't give an email address to contact the forum owner or an audio alternate
to the captcha. So, what I'm wondering is, is this something each forum
owner can set up on his/her own, or is this something whoever is in charge
at vBulletin would have to set up for each forum?

The first time I ever ran into it was signing up for the message board at
megadeth.com back in like July of 2001. Part of me thinks the Winamp guys
would be willing to add an audio alternative, but it makes me think maybe
vBulletin's software just isn't set up to handle such things, and that they
need to be made aware of the problem and asked/nudged to fix it.

Re: Winamp vs WMP

2007-10-15 Thread Wes Derby
Albert.

I see you know something about Winamp 5.5. Mind letting me know your
settings, what screenreader you're using, and all that? As you may have
seen before, I'm having crashing issues. It's only on the "Audio" view of
the library though, and only when I tab to an actual list of individual
songs...CD burning and ripping works fine...The "Video" screen seems to work
fine. The only other one that gives me trouble is the "Recently Added"
screen in the library.

I've re-submitted the error to Winamp's folks, and they're apparently
stumped...Apparently, the only people having this problem are those of us
running screenreaders.

Obviously, this question is open to anyone who wants to offer
suggestions...The only difference is, I'm running Winamp Pro. Everything
else in it is the same as "Full", but I have faster ripping and burning
spedds, and more encoding choices, and as I said, ripping and burning aren't
causing me any trouble.

(OT) Accessible Cell Phone Question

2007-10-15 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

I know this is off-topic, but frankly, I wasn't sure which list was best to
subscribe to to ask for help, so here it is. If someone can point me in the
right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Does anyone here use the Samsung A640 from Sprint? I've been a Sprint customer
foryears, and because we get a discount from my wife's company, didn't want to
switch to Verizon even though I know they have semi-accessible phones. I heard
the podcast about the Samsung A640 on BlindCoolTech.com and went and replaced
my phone with one. I'd also like to hear from any users of the next model up,
the M300, in case it does what I'm looking for...Then, I'll take this back and
upgrade.

First Question: With the text-to-speech enabled, I notice that when I get a
call, it only announces the number. Is there a way to set it, as you can with
some of the Verizon phones, to announce the number AND use your chosen ringer?

Second, I notice one of my coworkers, who has the Verizon LG5200, that his
phone will announce the caller's name instead of their number if it's someone
in their address book when they call. Is there a way to set the A640 to do
this?

If the A640 can't do it, does anyone know if the M300 can?

I read the manual, and it barely mentioned the TTS.

Feel free to email me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] so we don't clog the list
with this discussion.

Thanks.

Wes

Re: Winamp 5.5 Build 1640 Problem

2007-10-14 Thread Wes Derby
Hey, Chris.

Yep...Already did that about a week ago. DJ Egg, the guy who seems to be
running things, took a look at the error report that came out of all of this
(the problem started with the 5.5 betas and has continued) and seemed
completely stumped as to what's causing this...No one else seems to be
having this problem on the forums, so unfortunately, it leaves me believing
it may be only those of us using screenreaders who are experiencing it.

The only other thing I can think of is to completely erase the program and
do a full reinstall.

Also, I don't know if it makes a difference (and neither did the Winamp
developers), but I'm running Winamp Pro.

Thanks again...I'll give it another shot on the forums and see what happens.
Luckily, I have a sighted wife, and she was able to read me the captcha
code.

Winamp 5.5 Build 1640 Problem

2007-10-14 Thread Wes Derby
Okay, I like the features of the new Winamp, but...Whenever I tab from the
artist list to the album list, things are fine; but when I tab to the list of
actual songs, the program crashes...It appears to be blaming it on oleacc.dll,
which appears to be some sort of Microsoft Accessibility system file. First,
do I need this file, or can I delete it? If I DO need it, how do I figure out
what the error actually means and how to fix it? I'm considering doing a
complete uninstall of Winamp and reinstalling, though that did no good last
time.

Also, when submitting the error report, I get the following Runtime error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe
R6025
- pure virtual function call

So, my question here is two-fold. First, what does this error mean? And just
like the last one, how do I get rid of it?

Thanks. U want to be able to take full advantage of my Winamp again.

Re: CDRWIN

I've found DVD support is very good for backing up MP3's and my wife's
pictures...AWFUL for backing up .zip or .7Z files though as it only shows
them being 384MB when they're MUCH larger.

Re: CDRWIN

2007-10-06 Thread Wes Derby
Yeah...It's pretty decent software; works well with JAWS too.

My only complaint is, when I tried to load a zip file to a DVD, it told me
it was only 384MB, when the file was really about 4.4 GB. Also, they show
an option for burning a multiple-disc zip file, but when you select that and
select the "Record" button, it then informs you that that option is not yet
supported...Here's a thought; don't allow me to select it from the dropbox
if you don't support the option.

Otherwise, it's decent software. It'd be nice if, for the price, they
actually notified you when there's an update. I've found updates by
periodically checking their site, but have never received email from them or
had the program try to check for updates like most normal programs do.

Re: Winamp Version 5.50 Build 1600 Beta is now Available

2007-10-02 Thread Wes Derby
I have to say, I like the Auto tagger idea...However, I'm running into a
MAJOR problem with this beta, as well as the last beta, of Winamp.

I can tab through the library fine...But, if I try to tab to the song list
from the album list, Winamp crashes and creates a dump file and log. Also,
this seems to happen if I manually edit tags while playing a file, or use
the auto tagger. I can scroll through the artist and album pains no
problem...But the second I go for the songs pain, it creates some sort of
memory access violation error. I have it set to automatically send the
error reports, and it claims it uses my default email client, though I
haven't heard Outlook Express launch, so I have no idea if they're receiving
my error reports or not, but this is pretty irritating.

Everything else seems to work fine though...CD burning and ripping are
good...Playing is fine...It's just editing tags or trying to explore the
actual song/track pain of the library under "Audio".

I'm guessing this is a Winamp problem, not a JAWS problem. Anyone else run
into this?

PAC Mate Audio Support Question

2007-09-11 Thread Wes Derby
Hello.

Recently, due to the death of my Braille Lite, I finally bought a PAC
Mate...And after having had experience with both the PAC Mate now and the
BrailleNote in the past, I'm definitely happy with the choice I made.

What I'm wondering is, do we know if FS plans to work with NLS to add support
for NLS's digital talking books to either the current PAC Mates or the new PAC
Mate Omni which will e out soon? I ask because frankly, if I can avoid it, I'd
rather not have to buy an additional device (though the Victor Stream sounds
cool).

Thanks.

Well, looks like Comcast doesn't like me sending email to the wifi-radio.biz
domain...I got some weird error message claiming it's "not in the approved list
of recipient hosts, so I'll contact Comcast and see if there's a way around
that and try again and see what information I can get.

Not sure about Sonos, but I just read about one called the Phoenix WiFi Radio
on one of my favorite blogs, Orbitcast.com. Looks like an interesting device,
but again, not sure about accessibility. I have an email into the company to
find out about the price of the unit as well as how accessible it is, or if
they have plans to add speech support or something for blind users. For those
who are interested, the website is www.wifi-radio.biz, and the email address if
you'd like to encourage them to put something in place to make the radios

Of course, if I hear anything from them, I'll let everyone know.

Mine's definitely more stable, but slow to initially load.

5.35 has finally solved that annoying problem I had for a year or so where
the whole computer would crash if I loaded a CD via Winamp without holding
down the Shift key when closing the door.

Re: ABOUT WINAMP

2007-08-10 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, Jose.

Not sure if ripping is possible with the free Winamp, but with Winamp Pro, I
can rip the average CD in about 5 or 6 minutes.

Just insert the CD, go to the Winamp Library. From there, arrow down through
the tree view and find your CD or DVD drive. Once you find this, it will
likely initiate a CDDB query to find your CD. If it gives you a list of
matches, select the right one and press spacebar or enter on "Accept Match".
Once that's all done, tab past the track list about three times to the "Rip"
button. Before you start ripping, you'll want to select the "Settings"
option from the menu after you've activated the Rip button. Make sure you
have your naming convention set, and your desired directory for the files.
Once that's all done, either press the "Rip" button again and select "Rip
All Tracks" or go back to the track list and use standard windows commands
to select the ones you want...Once they're selected, tab back to the "Rip"
button, activate it, and select "Rip Selected Tracks".

As I mentioned in a previous message, David's scripts make this a whole lote
easier in 5.35...Jim Grimsby's scripts are great, too, but don't seem to
work right (for me, anyway) after 5.33.

HTH

Re: Some Winamp queries

2007-08-10 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, Peter.

Not sure on your last one, but with the first two:
I find I have no problem with the "Rip" button being found using the tab
key...I'm running Winamp 5.35 with the latest update to JAWS 8.0 and David
Truong's most excellent scripts. Can't remember where you find them (Dean,
wasn't there something in Top Tech Tidbits about that a week or two
ago?)...But get them and install them. Your use of the library will improve
dramatically. In fact, Winamp has now replaced CDEX as my soul ripper.

As far as playlists, I've never known where Winamp saved the ones I made
directly from ripping CDs, but I've found them via the Winamp library no
problem...Though, since I don't want them, I disabled that feature.

But definitely try David's scripts...They've always worked for me; I can't
remember the last time I had to use the JAWS cursor for anything.

Don.

What exactly did you find about that particular player? Feel free to email
me off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, if you have Rockbox questions,
the Forums on their site are very helpful and I've always found the mods and
developers to be very friendly as long as a question is asked concisely, yet
thoroughly and intelligently...Basically, they don't like questions where
the answer is right there in the manual...But otherwise, they're a friendly
bunch.

Re: Ipod and rockbox

2007-08-10 Thread Wes Derby
Sorry for the late response; just catching up on email, so if this has
already been answered, I apologize.

Rockbox is free. Not sure how much an iPod Nano costs, but I got a 30GB
video for $249.99 plus tax at Best Buy and use Rockbox on it with little
trouble. There are a couple features such as the plugins that don't work
with speech, but as far as finding my music, manipulating the settings, and
things like that, I have no trouble as a totally blind user...And, it's just
about the easiest software to install; I normally do it half asleep. :)

The ONLY drawback to Rockbox on an iPod, which doesn't seem to be a problem
on other players, is that it has way less battery life between charges.
Good old Apple, huh?

To see what models are supported, just go to www.rockbox.org, and they have
a list right there on the main page.

Well I can't really tell that much difference; and I've burned a
 couple MP3
music CD's and they sound pretty good. I use CDex's Lame encoder.
 I like
the sound quality, and I could save a lot of room by putting ten
 CD's
 worth
of music on one MP3 CD.

Legal Filesharing: SpiralFrog

2007-08-08 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, All.

Just wondering how many of you have heard about the apparently legal
file-sharing program coming out soon called SpiralFrog. I've been reading
about it for a while now through fmqb.com. Apparently, they're inviting some
of their newsletter subscribers to be essentially beta testers and have the
first look at the program. I'd encourage everyone to hit their site at
www.spiralfrog.com and sign up for the newsletter...I've contacted them about
accessibility, and as the developer has never heard of JAWS or WindowEyes, he
says he doesn't know if it's accessible...I would strongly encourage any who
would be interested in using a program like this (Ad supported, and several
labels have signed on) to contact them using the "Contact" link on their site
to let them know you'd be interested in testing it to see how user-friendly it
is for blind users. If they hear from a few of us, they might be more likely
to either do something, or let some of us JAWS/WindowEyes users, and those who
know how to script, be testers.

Re: Winamp scripts links was: RE: Winamp Scripts

2007-05-31 Thread Wes Derby
As someone who has been using the scripts for several weeks now, I must say
they're great. I haven't had a problem with the things I normally try to do
in Winamp...I haven't used any of the online features, as I'm an XM
subscriber and use XStreamXM (xstreamxm.com) to listen to their online
stream, and that's about the only one of the online services I'd use often.
:) But, for getting around my library, manipulating audio files, ripping
and burning, the scripts are excellent and highly recommended.

Just my 2 cents.

Wes

RE: Article: Audio Menus for iPods

2007-05-15 Thread Wes Derby
I'd totally agree with the statements about Rockbox...I've been using it on a
30GB iPod Video since February, and over all, it works great and is pretty
accessible. I would have rather gone with the 80GB iPod, but at the time,
Rockbox didn't support it...Not sure if that's changed.

Interestingly, IE7 blocked this program from downloading...I had to approve
it via the Information Bar. The only other time I've had that happen was

RE: Winamp Library Question

2007-05-02 Thread Wes Derby
Yep...Thanks to the great scripts by David Truong, I got it straightened out.
All I had to do was unzip his scripts into my settings\enu folder, and
everything works like it did before. I haven't tried it with the radio stuff
yet, though...I'm assuming it'll work; everything else I've done works right.

However, I have another strange issue that I've noticed since Winamp 5.33, and
I don't think this has anything to do with JAWS. In the library, the "Albums"
and "Songs" lists are sorted propperly, but the "Artist" list is sorted from Z
to A instead of A to Z. I haven't changed anything in my display settings; any
idea how I can get the propper sort order back on that listview, or is this a
new Winamp feature?

Re: Winamp Library Question

2007-05-02 Thread Wes Derby
I found it pretty much impossible to do with Winamp 5.33 and JAWS 8. Seems to
work okay in Winamp 5.34 though; you might give that a try.

Actually, it IS somewhat comforting. A list member sent me some scripts
off-list to help the library issue we hope...We'll see if it helps with the
search as well.

Strange Winamp 5.34 Behavior

2007-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, All.

Just updated to the official release of Winamp 5.34 (using Pro Version). I'm
noticing an odd thing that I've never had happen before. In the library, I
often use the search function since my library is so large and not everything
is propperly tagged due to the various rippers and taggers I've used over the
years. Anyhow, when I type something into the search box, anytime I press the
spacebar, it inserts the space like it should, but also inserts the letter X.
Anyone else having this problem or know what might be causing it?

Also, I reverted back to the Winamp scripts that came with JAWS 8.0.1177...No
change; the library still only reads the last letter of each option in the Tree
View such as Audio, Video and stuff...They're both "O". Usually, if I use "Say
Current Line", I can get the whole name spoken, but not always. I deleted the
scripts I'd downloaded from JFWLite and, as I said, went back to the default
scripts...No change.

Any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running the current beta of 5.34. I only did the recompile to see if that
would help the reading features in the library...Didn't edit anything though,
thankfully.

Re: Error Message when Recompiling Winamp Scripts

2007-04-18 Thread Wes Derby
Hmmm...Not sure if I still have a copy of the scripts from JAWS 8. I've been
running the ones Jim Grimsby created for library support last June. I haven't
downloaded any new ones since then, but have updated JAWS several times since
then. So that I don't have to reinstall JAWS, where can I find the correct
scripts and make sure I have the right ones?

When I opened the script file using Script manager, it did say they were
copyright Freedom Scientific, 1995-2006.

Thanks.

Re: Quick Observation on Latest Winamp 5.34 Beta

2007-04-18 Thread Wes Derby
Yeah...I feel it is. It's a LITTLE clumsy as far as what it reads, but you can
use the library with your PC cursor instead of going through finding what you
want with the JAWS cursor and routing it to the PC and such.

Error Message when Recompiling Winamp Scripts

2007-04-17 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

Okay, just downloaded the new JAWS update. Now, in my Winamp library, it only
gives me the last character of the selected item in the Tree View (list of
artists/titles works fine) when I use my up and down arrow. "Say Current Line"
doesn't make a difference either.

Anyhow, I tried opening the script file, and used control+s to recompile it.
Doing so gave me the following error:
 Unknown variable EQHelp1

Any idea how to fix this, and will it make a difference with the library
anyway? I'm using the version of the Winamp scripts downloaded from
JFWlite.com for JAWS 7 and "higher".

Thanks.

Quick Observation on Latest Winamp 5.34 Beta

2007-04-17 Thread Wes Derby
I downloaded the new beta version of Winamp last night and noticed a few things
I thought might be interesting to other users.

First, the Library is working better with JAWS, as far as being able to use
arrow keys and the PC cursor. However, I notice that as I scroll through the
first tree view where the different sections (audio, video, online services,
etc.) are listed, JAWS only speaks the last couple letters of whatever I'm
currently focused on...But, if I use the "Say Current Line" command, it will
read the whole line. For instance, when simply using the arrows, "Audio"
becomes "io" or sometimes "au". Video became "eo", and so on. I used the
"Save and Compile" option on the script file, and it made no difference. I'm
running the Feb 28 release of JAWS 8.0.

On a positive note, it looks like, even though it's the "Full" version and not
the "Pro" version, it retained my Pro registration...I haven't tried ripping
and burning yet, but I imagine I'll be able to do so at maximum speed.

Re: Winamp Scripts

2007-03-04 Thread Wes Derby
And, to add to Jana's question, since Debbie's untimely passing (also meaning
jfwlite won't be updated), what is the best site for scripts? For those who
write scripts but either don't have their own sites or want to spread the word
to all JAWS users, what script sites are you posting to?

I'd love to see some updated Winamp scripts for 5.33...It'd be cool to have the
library working right with JFW 8.

Re: winamp

2007-03-04 Thread Wes Derby
Great suggestion...This won't help him with XM, so in that case, I recommend a
subscription to XM Radio Online, available at listen.xmradio.com. I think the
trial is three days; not sure what the monthly fee is since I get it free as a
regular XM subscriber...But, you get a LOT more channels with a real sub than
you do with Winamp. I also recommend using the XStreamXM player instead of the
default one on XM's site.

Re: transcoding with winamp 5.33?

2007-03-04 Thread Wes Derby
Sorry if someone's already responded to this, but I have two ideas.

First, in Winamp's Preferences menu (control+p), under Plugins, there's a
"Get Plugins" button...Either click this or go directly to Winamp.com and
search, and see if the plugin is available there.

If not, a reinstall should do the trick.

Re: transcoding with winamp 5.33?

2007-02-26 Thread Wes Derby
Hello.

When I use the transcoder, I select the file or files I want to transcode from
the media library, use the right-click button on my keyboard, and selec the
"Send to" submenu, then select "Format Converter". When the window launches, I
select the location I want the file to go to, the naming format, the bitrate
and such, and hit the OK button...Then, it does the work for me, and I just
wait until it says my last track is 100% done, click the "Done" button, and it
closes. So far, I've done it successfully on converting several MP3's to
slightly lower bitrates so I can fit them on my iPod...Haven't tried it with
WMA files or other DRM-protected stuff.

I'm using it with JAWS 8.0, with Windows XP Home.

Re: winamp library

2007-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
I'm finding, if I use my JAWS cursor, get to Audio, route PC to JAWS, then I
can tab...But initially, when I first launch the library, no, tabbing and
arrowing around isn't possible. Hopefully, Jim or someone will come up with
some new scripts for this version.

I AM glad to see they included the Transcoder plugin as a standard part of
Winamp (at least in Winamp Pro), and the plugin seems to work better than it
did when I last downloaded it as a "extra" plugin about a year ago.

Re: Salon.com Technology | Steve Jobs' iTunes dance

2007-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
Very good article. Without giving away too much detail about where I work,
we're going through smething similar with the streaming of our radio reading
service...Other than us, I've never seen a radio station use DRM; many of us
are hoping that we WON'T be using it much longer. I think this article
shows something I've always found to be true with my friends; it's not just
those of us using screenreaders who have difficulties with, and find DRM
annoying...I think sighted consumers hate it just as much.

Re: More on Possible Accessible XM Radio

2007-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All...Thought I'd make some comments on this thread.

I'll admit, I haven't been keeping up with the list lately, but seeing this
about possible accessible XM radios is very cool...As many of you know, I've
been an XM subscriber for almost three years, and would NEVER go back to
using terrestrial radio, but the thought of a more blind-friendly radio will
definitely continue to keep me with XM, merger or not.

I've also been an XM411.com member since July of 2004, and can tell you it's
a great site. Ziggy and Ed run a great forum, and any time I've had issues
navigating something on the site, they've always been happy to assist...For
that reason, I'd encourage ANYONE thinking of buying XM products to support
Ziggy's store at www.myradiostore.com. Unfortunately, I bought my receiver
before I knew about him, and my MyFi was a gift from a friend who works for
an electronics retailer, but I can tell you that my next XM receiver will
come from My Radio Store.

Personally, if they're trying to modify a current radio to make it more
accessible, I'd like to see them do the Inno because of its storage
capacity.

Rockbox/iPod Question

2007-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

Okay, I did it...I went with a 30GB iPod (only because the 60GB doesn't appear
to be made anymore), and have loaded Rockbox on to it. I have to say, over
all, I love it and find it makes the iPod VERY accessible.

However, I have a question that I'm hoping someone here can answer. I'd much
rather use the iPod with Rockbox in Database mode as opposed to the standard
Windows Explorer style...However, I see from the manual that it has to
initialize the Database, and that I'm supposed to access this from the "File
View" menu under "General Settings"...The only problem is, I don't find a
"Database" menu under the File view. I find: "Sort by Case", "Sort by
Directory", "Sort Files", "Show Files", and something that sounds like "Peg
Cache". My question, I guess, is 2-fold...What am I doing wrong, and where,
really, do I find this "Database" menu?

Like I said, otherwise, I find Rockbox to be pretty accessible...And I must
say, I found a lot of Brian Hartgen's information at hartgen.org VERY useful
and would recommend his site to anyone thinking about an iPod.

If anyone has any assistance they can give, either reply to the list, or write
me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Rockbox Questions

2007-01-18 Thread Wes Derby
Thanks...I'll check that out. What's its capacity? Like I was saying, I
was planning to go with the iPod because it's the only one with that large a
hard-drive onboard, and I need something that will hold tons of music. In
my MP3CD library alone, I have about 13,000 tracks, plus just over a
thousand regular CDs...So, lots of tunes.

Winamp Issue Resolved...Sort Of

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Earlier today, I wrote about a weird error message I'd been getting with Winamp
lately. I've also noticed that sometimes as of late, I have trouble burning
with CDRWIN if Norton Internet Security is running. I'd shut down NIS before
burning with Winamp, but still got the error. However, After I shut it down,
shut down GoBack, and "Dell Support Agent", I was able to burn without
problems. Just figured I'd share in case anyone else has the same
problems...Guess it's time to buy more RAM.

Rockbox Questions

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Hey, All.

Okay, I have some questions about Rockbox that I didn't see answered/asked in
my search of the archives.

With tax time coming up, since my birthday falls shortly after we get our
refund, I'm thinking of trying to convince my wife to get me an iPod.

First, I see from looking at Rockbox's site that it does work with the 60-gig
iPod, but not the 80GB yet. Anyone know if the developers plan to make Rockbox
useable with the 80-gig? Yes, I know 60 should be enough, but I have a HUGE
music collection. :-)

Second, I know there are other MP3 players out there, but is there one with
which Rockbox will work that has the storage capacity of the 60GB iPod? Any
plans to make it work with Zune?

Finally, since they can apparently be played on the iPod, will Rockbox work
with content purchased from Audible.com?

Okay, one more question, actually...Who IS the developer of Rockbox? Is it a
blind/VI person? I ask because I'd assume it is because let's face it, many
sighted people don't think to include speech capabilities in their
software...But at the same time, in looking at rockbox.org, it looks like it
offers some great things for the sighted users as well...Just curious.

Thanks for your help.

Winamp CD Burning Issue

2007-01-15 Thread Wes Derby
Okay, I've had an error that's been popping up lately, just all of a sudden the
last few days, and I'm hoping someone here can help. I'm running WinAmp 5.32.
The error is pasted below:
Nullsoft Burner Error
Error during Audio CD burning process.
Library error: The SCSI command sent by the function returned a check condition.
Drive error:Power Calibration Area Is Full

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Winamp Pro, and it hasn't made a
difference.

I looked for info in the "Troubleshooting" section of Winamp to no avail...I
also tried joining the Winamp Forum, but they have one of those visual
verification things, and unlike many sites, don't appear to have a link for
blind and visually impaired users who can't see the image to be able to get
help...So, so much for that.

Any help on how to correct/get around this problem, or what it actually means,
would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Problem with Winamp can anyone help?

2006-10-23 Thread Wes Derby
That actually sounds pretty similar to the problem I've been having since
Winamp 5.2 came out. I'm running a similar system, though with a bit less
RAM. The problem still continues in Winamp 5.3.

Winamp Upgrades Question

2006-09-10 Thread Wes Derby
Hello.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp, and am still having the same issues with
CD's as I described a couple weeks ago (regarding playing and ripping). Other
programs play the CDs fine without the crash, and CDEX will rip my CDs (but
it's slower than Winamp Pro). I don't know if upgrading to one of the new
betas will help, but here's my question.

Obviously, I don't see any of these betas on Winamp's site, winamp.com. If I
install the beta, will I still have access to all the advanced Pro features,
such as burning and faster ripping?

Thanks.

Hmmm...That is odd.

I've uninstalled that Transcoder plugin, so I'm going to see if that solves my
crashing problem. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

That used to happen to me back with the old Winamp 2 series...Once I upgraded
to 5 and above, the problem went away...Also, when that happened, I was running
a Gateway PC with Windows 98SE as the operating system.

RE: Winamp and CD's; Strange Issue

2006-08-30 Thread Wes Derby
Yeah, I've had the reboot happen to me a couple of times as well.

The only other thing I can think of is, I DID install that Transcoder plug-in a
few months back. It seems the problems started a bit after I installed that, so
maybe I'll remove it and see if that helps...Over all, I've found the
transcoder somewhat difficult to use and somewhat inaccessible...Though I can't
think what it would have to do with playing/ripping a CD since I'm not actually
USING the plug-in for that purpose.

Winamp and CD's; Strange Issue

2006-08-29 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

Okay, here's a strange one; maybe someone else has experienced this. I now use
Winamp for all of my ripping needs, as well as most of my audio burning (I'm
now using CDRWin for data burning since Easy CD Creator is no longer
accessible.). Ever since the 5.2 series came out, I've had a rather strange
problem. Often, when I put in an audio CD to play, the whole system will
freeze up if I load it in Winamp...Then, when I reboot, it tells me that XP has
recovered from a "serious crash", and asks if I want to submit an error report.
When I do, it says an undertermined driver caused the problem. Then,
occasionally whenI'm ripping, after a few CD's, Winamp will give an error
saying it needs to close...When I submit the error report to Microsoft, it
claims NullSoft has created an update which will fix the error, and gives me a
link to click...This simply takes me to the page to download the newest version
of the player, which is what I have.

I have two CD/DVD drives, one of which is my burner. It doesn't matter which
drive I use; this can happen with either one. The odd part is that I have no
problem burning...Also, when I play a CD in another program such as Windows
Media Player, I have no problems. I simply prefer Winamp and find it much more
full-featured and easier to use.

Like I said, I've only encountered this problem since I upgraded to version
5.21; I'm on 5.24 now.

Anyone else having this problem, or know of a patch I can download? It's a
really irritating thing to have to deal with...Plus, when Winamp crashes, it
locks the CD drive up, so I have to reboot just to be able to eject. Usually,
if I put the disc back in and re-do my rip, it works just fine...Winamp never
gives me problems, like I said, when I'm burning CD's or playing files from my
hard drive...It's only when I'm popping in a CD to play, or on occasion when
I'm ripping...And it doesn't happen every time. With the problem when playing,
sometimes I can load three or four CD's before I have a problem. With ripping,
sometimes I can go through twenty with no problems, but then the next three
will give me trouble.

Very strange...Any help would be appreciated.

Wes

Re: WinAmp

2006-08-29 Thread Wes Derby
That's interesting to hear people saying how "inaccessible" the library
is...I'm running JFW 5.1, XP Home, and currently, Winamp 5.27...Thanks to
Jim's scripts, I have absolutely no trouble using the media library...Works
great for browsing files, searching for files, ripping/burning CD's, using
the online services, and so on. Granted, I haven't upgraded to any of the
5.25 betas, so that might make a difference...Actually, I've considered
upgrading, but as a Winamp Pro user, I haven't seen any version newer than
5.24 on the Winamp site.

Reed,

Suggestion 1: FORGET ABOUT THE LIBRARY! Even with the latest scripts, it
isn't accessible, and it simply isn't worth all the effort to try and make
it accessible. For browsing the music on your hard drive, use the ctrl-l and
shift-l commands, and, for finding interesting web streams to play, browse
the shoutcast web site, and bookmark anything that interests you.

Go ahead and install the latest scripts, though. They do make various other
functions more accessible. Just don't think they'll do anything
significantly useful for the library.

Blessed Be,

Dana

Re: xm napster?

2006-07-10 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Melissa.

I don't know if you've already gotten a response to this, but here goes...

I've been an XM subscriber for a couple years now, and naturally, was
curious about accessibility when XM Napster came out, and quite frankly,
when the initial Napster software was released for legal
downloading...Sadly, I've over all found the software pretty inaccessible.
I've found it's easiest to either illegally download my music or buy from
MSN Music or Buymusic.com...As far as XM Online, it's easier to just use
listen.xmradio.com for that.

Out of curiosity, how easy to use have you found the Inno? I'm thinking of
upgrading from a MyFi to an Inno (if they're not pulled from the market)
this coming Christmas, but wonder about accessibility as far as accessing my
stored content, whether it be from my MP3 collection or stored XM
programming. I like the fact that it will apparently let you record
multiple programs at once, whereas the MyFi only allows one at a time...It'd
be great to be recording Opie & Anthony, but still be able to get maybe Tom
Petty's Burried Treasure, or something on Boneyard, or Bill Anderson's show
on America...And so on.

So, I guess what I'm asking is, for a blind user, is the Inno worth buying
at this point?

1962-66 and 67-70) in about a half hour total for all four CDs. Very
strange. Just burned a 41-minute album to CD in just under three minutes
with Winamp Pro 5.24.

Re: Updated Winamp Scripts with Jaws 7.1

2006-06-24 Thread Wes Derby
I installed the scripts after upgrading to Winamp 5.24...Everything seems to
work fine, except, JAWS keeps saying "Unknown Function Call to (something
unintelligible) Support". Any idea what this means or how to fix it? Also,
I'm still running JAWS 5.1 (My SMA expired and I haven't had the extra cash
to renew it) and when I tried control+s to save/recompile the scripts, there
was an error there as well.

I can use the library fine with the new scripts, but it IS annoying to hear
that "Unknown Function" message every time I hit a button or move my cursor.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wes

Re: Winamp Version 5.24 is now Available

2006-06-24 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Chris.

I'm curious, what problems did you have with Winamp Pro? You mentioned it
didn't work all that well on your system...I only ask because I bought it
last September (at that time, it was $19.95, so according to your message,
sounds like they've lowered the price) and I find the ripping to be much
faster than programs like CDEX, and the burning to be exceptionally quick.
Now, if they'd just add support for CD-Text without having to buy a plugin
that, according to most of the reviews I've seen, doesn't work too well, I'd
be set...That, and I'd like to see them add the ability to burn data CDs,
particularly MP3-CD's.

I'm just curious as to what issues you've had...So far, I've been quite
happy with it.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
Sirius isn't good for anyone, unless you're a weightlifter or have a U-Haul
to bring it home in. The units are god-awful, the programming (other than
the NFL) stinks, and from the listening I've done, their DJ's are awful. XM
is lightyears ahead of Sirius as far as technology goes. XM has had the
MyFI and other portable receivers out since before Christmas of 2004...As
far as I've seen, Sirius STILL doesn't have a portable receiver that
actually gets live programming "On the Go" when not connected to a home or
car kit...Though, the new S50 may have changed that. Either way, they're
still way behind XM. Too much money spent on Hoo-Hoo Stern and not enough
on technology/equipment.

Just my opinion.

Cool! Is there anything to make Sirius accessible from a computer, to
control and the like? I'd really hate to have to play some of that talk
stuff through an FM transmitter as the mini system I have doesn't have
 a
line-in jack. It would be nice if such a kit had digital out to use
 with
 my
turtle beach montego so that TV could be recording through the analog
line-in while I listen to a show from the Sirius receiver. What would
 happen
if I hooked the sat kit to the onboard card line-in and digitally
 connect
that card to the turtle beach? The speakers connected to that card
 would
probably be adequate for an external synth but nothing more than that
 as
 I
was hoping to use it with JFW if the latency weren't so bad.

Re: Debating on whether to get XM, some info needed

2006-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Kevin.

Okay, let's see if I can help you...Others may have already, but here's my
opinion.

I'm on the bottom floor of a 3-story apartment building in Everett,
Washington. With my home stereo, I have a MyFi hooked up, and my antenna on
top of the stereo speaker which is on a wall next to a window...I have NO
clue what direction it's facing, and I have a perfect signal. They say to
point it south...I'll admit, I couldn't tell you what direction it's pointed
in if my life depended on it.

In my bedroom, I have the SkyFi with the SkyFi boombox...The antenna's kind
of up against a wall, and my signal is great. The boombox I have (the
DelPhi one) does have a headphone jack. Before I got the MyFi, this one was
hooked up to my home stereo with an RCA plug plugged into the headphone jack
of the boombox, and the two plugs plugged into the back of my stereo, and I
had a great signal.

We also have the car kit for the SkyFi installed in our van, and my wife and
I get a great signal no matter where we are, even in the Cascades, heading
to central Washington. The ONLY place I lose my signal is northbound on I-5
near Fort Lewis, and even that loss is only a few seconds. We travel this
route between Portland Oregon and Seattle quite a bit. For some reason, I
have no signal issues going from Seattle TO Portland though.

As far as the repeaters go, check out the message boards at www.xm411.com.
I'm sure someone there would be happy to check the map for you and let you
know abought the Raleigh-Durham area...In fact, there are plenty of
subscribers on the boards from that area. Registration is free, and unlike
xmfans.com, they don't have one of those "Copy the text in the graphic"
annoyances from what I recall. And if they do, they'll be willing to help
you around that. Unfortunately, calling XM's customer service might not be
a great idea...Most of the reps I've talked to have tended to be in Canada
or one of the Island nations, are not XM subscribers, and are not very
helpful...Although, now that XM is available legally in Canada, this may
have changed. You can call them at 800-967-2346.

Hope that helps.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
I evaluated both companies heavily before I chose XM...The only advantage,
IMHO, Sirius has is the NFL...Hopefully, XM will steal that away and Howard
Stern's contract will bankrupt the Little Doggy Company and leave XM as the
only one standing.

I admit, I don't have a lot of respect for Sirius...They don't even have a
portable unit that is capable of picking up live programming "On the
Go"...Unlike XM, who has a multitude of portable units...But I digress.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
If I remember right, they discontinued the XMPCR about a year and a half ago
because of some software some guy created which allowed users to set the
XMPCR to not only record songs/programs from XM as individual MP3's, but to
tag them with ID3 tags as well. The creator mainly did this for the
concerts that used to air on XM Live, but the RIAA freaked out because they
figured this would lead to more music being available for file-sharing and
felt XM wasn't doing enough to protect copyrights and such.

For those who want to see what's playing though, go to www.xm411.com. The
MacroMedia Flash movie thing seems to be mostly accessible. I've used it
successfully.

On a sidenote, as an XM subscriber, I've suggested that they do like the DMX
Music service that was on my digital cable used to do...If you clicked on a
channel, it'd show a list of the last ten songs that had played on that
channel. Since then, Comcast has switched to Music Choice, whose site, last
time I checked, is pretty uninformative. For those who ARE XM subscribers,
I made my suggestion of showing the last ten songs on each channel to the
head of music programming, Jon Zellner...Very cool guy. If you're an XM
subscriber who uses a screenreader and would like to see this, either use
the contact links at xmradio.com, or email Mr. Zellner at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] VP of Programming, Eric Logan (known to us O&A
fans as E-Lo) at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

One thing to consider before buying one is if you can activate it
now. This may not be a problem at aall but something worth checking
on. I enjoy mine. It is the best designed digital radio for us if
it is satellite or any other of digital radio. They won't make the
others where we can see what song is playing.

This may have been handled already...I'm a bit behind on my email.

Which XM list are you referring to? My favorite is Ziggy's site,
www.xm411.com...Pretty accessible; I'm a regular poster there.

Ziggy also runs a great XM merchandise site, www.myradiostore.com.

Hi Dick.

I'm sure you've gotten a ton of recommendations, but here ya go.

I used to use CDEX, but now find it slow, especially on my new computer.
Now, I use WinAmp Pro...I still have 5.111, though I see some newer versions
are out. It works great, and is fast.

Re: launchcast radio and the my station

2006-03-23 Thread Wes Derby
It's irritating to see how many sites are using this form of
verification...I work as a Readers' Advisor for the Washington Talking Book
& Braille Library. As part of my job, I maintain our general email account.
Many times, when replying to a user who has Earthlink as their ISP, I'm
given a form to fill out to allow my emails to go through and avoid their
spam blocker. It has the graphic verification, and has a "Click Here" link
for the visually impaired. This takes you to their live chat with technical
support...The help I was given from Earthlink's tech support has been
"Sorry, we can't help you. Try to find the person's phone number and call
them and tell them to add you to their list of okay email addresses". Great
help, guys...Which is why, when asked to switch to Earthlink, I refused.

So now, I have to call a sighted coworker over to assist with these forms,
or the Earthlink user who wants to order books (usually for a parent or
other elderly relative) won't receive the reply to his/her email.

By contrast, I used to regularly do reviews on grageband.com...I don't have
much time since our daughter was born almost a year ago. They had the same
process on each review. However, I wrote them and explained that I'm blind
and use JAWS. They were able to disable this requirement on my account, so
now, I can submit my reviews without a problem. So, some companies are
willing to help...Others, obviously, aren't.

Re: launchcast radio and the my station

2006-03-23 Thread Wes Derby
Okay, I know I'm several months behind on my list mail, but I do have a
comment about this...It's one of the reasons I miss SonicNet's station
feature; the rating tool was accessible.

I wrote Yahoo about this a couple years back, and the response I got was
pretty much "It's a flash tool. Sorry you can't use it, but we don't plan to
work on accessibility".

I'll admit, Yahoo was one of my favorite sites when I first got on the
Internet in 1998 or so...But lately, they're one of my least favorites. I
know this isn't necessarily audio-related, but on their mailing lists and
many of their features, when you sign up, they have that "Type the text in
the graphic for security purposes. If you're blind or visually impaired,
click here". It takes you to a contact form...I've filled it out about
twenty times and have never once gotten a reply or any assistance...If I
want to use something that involves that kind of feature, I have to have my
wife, who is sighted, assist me. The only sites I've found who actually
assist in those things are garageband.com, opieanthony.net, and xmfans.com.

Okay, end of rant.

Help with AresP2P?

2006-01-26 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All.

After hearing about it on the JFW list, I went ahead and decided to try
AresP2P. The first time I tried it, it froze my computer completely, but
that's besides the point...Last night, I installed it and got it working, found
some files and downloaded them. My question is, with this program, how do I
set it to share MY files with other users? I used to use WinMX, and with that,
it was easy...Under the Options, you selected the folders you wanted shared,
and you're done. This program didn't appear to have anything under preferences
or anything. I went to the "Library" tab, and I THINK I added my "My Music"
and "MP3" folders, but I'm not sure if that's all it takes to share the files.

Can anyone who's used or is using this program let me know what I need to do?
I seem to have figured everything else in the program out. If it helps, I'm
running WinXP, SP2 with JAWS 5.10.

Also, has anyone upgraded to the Pro version? I'm tempted to do it just to get
rid of the annoying pop-up asking me to upgrade, but I can't see, other than
getting rid of the pop-up, what advantages it has...Does it speed up your
downloads, give you more search results? Just curious.

Re: knowing a song's bitrate??

2005-12-15 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Juan.

I'm new to the list, but recognize some names from the JFW group...Anyway,
if this has already been answered, I apologize.

I find the Read-Only box in the Tag editor/info section of Winamp (alt+3)
displays the bitrate pretty easily. That's the best way I've found for
knowing the bitrate...It'll also let you know the file size, duration, and
all kinds of other information.
