accessible digital recorder with editing
Hello Dane & list Does one get an accessible digital recorder with editing capabilities. A friend of mine is a member of a choir. The choir master records the songs for her but everytime she makes a mistake she must start from scratch resulting in the creation of a new file. They are looking for a recorder which allows for stopping the recording and rewind to just before the error and then resume. Does one get such a recorder? I suppose it could be handy for lawyers and doctors. Regards Fanus
Plex music software
Hello list Has anyone used this software and if so, is it accessible with jaws. If not, is there a better application. I obtained a wifi storage drive and I want to stream music from it to a speaker on the wifi network. The drive manufacturer, Western Digital, recommends Plex for this purpose but I do not know it, so I do not want to install if it does not work with jaws. Regards Fanus

Hello Andre For what it is worth,I use the ESPNcricinfo app on my iphone. It is not live commentary but it gives the total and how many runs from each ball. This is in text format. For example it now says England 134/3 after 25.1 overs. At least I can follow it that way. Re: Echo Tap initial impressions
Hello Dane Sorry for my ignorance but what is the echo tab. Can one only use it if one has an Alexa? Regards Fanus From: Dane Trethowan Sent: Monday, February 13, 2017 3:41 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Echo Tap initial impressions I think the first thing that struck me about the Echo Tap was how well it prejects sound about a room given the size of the device which is smaller than the Amazon Echo itself. I have the Tap sitting on the kitchen table now where I can clearly hear it even at very low volume, I'm in the lounge area which goes through to the kitchen. The first thing I did with Tap was to take it outside to enjoy the sunshine and listen to the BBC Radio 4 Midnight news. I would stress that this device - whilst not the best for music - does the spoken word proud indeed! clearly audible and understandable. By all means, listen to your music on the go with Tap but its nothing compared to other systems around and neither we should expect it to be at the price paid for a Tap. I'd be most interested to hear comments from other Tap users. I intend to use the Tap mainly for listening to Talking Books and Radio though of course! there's no reason why I can't use it for much much more with Alexa. I haven't seen any mention of the Hands Free update we've been discussing yet so perhaps its not available everywhere at this time.

Re: Airfoil For Windows
Hello Dane I still have the problem that I can not stream with Airfoil. VLc lets the music sound like a robot and Winamp just makes crackles. I filled in the support form but got no answer. It is really a pity that one pays for software and can’t use it. Regards Fanus From: Dane Trethowan Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2016 8:22 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Airfoil For Windows Hi! I reinstalled Windows 10 onto my system, I've been using Windows 10 for 12 months, was having problems that were getting too difficult to fix easily so decided to completely reinstall which wasn't a difficult task in itself. So now I have Windows 10 up and running again so now to the annoying bit, reinstalling all that software. I won't be reinstalling iTunes and that's not because of iTunes itself which is a nice piece of software but I myself have no need for iTunes these days, more important in the audio side of things was the VLC Media Player and - given I do a lot of streaming - the excellent Airfoil for Windows App. If you have some Bluetooth or AirPlay device about and you wish to stream to them then Airfoil is truly a most useful tool you should consider and I did say Bluetooth devices so I'll talk about the shortly. The accessibility of Airfoil has come quite a long way since I started using the Windows version, you can use the tab key to move between the various panels of the software, for example each AirPlay device will have its own panel where you can turn transmission of a stream on and off, adjust the volume of the output and so on. The buttons aren't labeled but they'ear easy enough to work out. The bigger problem is entering one's licence key, it can be done but you'll most likely need to use the JAWS Cursor or WE Cursor to find where the information should be entered. So what can you stream using Airfoil? Pretty much anything that exists on your computer, capture an Applications audio for example or capture the output of a sound device or TV Tuner. So now to Bluetooth and the ability to handle Bluetooth is a recent addition to the capabilities of Airfoil If you have a computer which is capable of streaming to Bluetooth devices you can pair your devices and have Airfoil transmit to them independent of your computers speech and other sound. You can also define "Groups", you might like to put say two different devices into a group and transmit straight to the group rather than connect each device independently, saves a lot of time.

Now the buttons will be obvious as you test, one will minimise Airfoil, another exits Airfoil and another brings up the source list, these are the devices you can capture sound from to be streamed to your Airport Express or whatever. Another thing you’ll have to possibly look at is your Firewall, Airfoil probably won’t be able to transmit to your Airport Express until your Firewall allows it to do so, in which case Airfoil will probably report an error message and your Firewall - depending on what you’re using - may come up and ask you if you wish to allow Airfoil to connect to your network or similar. > On 16 Jul 2016, at 9:45 PM, Fanus wrote: > > Hello Dane > I am sorry for asking again but for some reason I get no sound on my hifi. Hello Dane I am sorry for asking again but for some reason I get no sound on my hifi. I can streme via itunes, so the problem must be with airfoil or winamp. Regards Fanus From: Dane Trethowan Sent: Friday, July 15, 2016 7:47 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Rogue Amoeba | Airfoil: Wireless audio around your house Yep certainly. You stream Winamp to your Airport Express by first running Airfoil and then pressing the "Source" button, its identified by tabbing to it, its about the third button along and your screen reader should announce "Toggle" as well as "Button", press the button with the Spacebar and a list will pop-up of all the physical sound devices and software you can capture the sound output from, Winamp should be amongst these but if it isn't then move to "Choose Other App" and select Winamp From there. Next press all to bring up the menu system and press T for Transmit, select Airport Express and start streaming. Re: B&W speakers arrived finally
Hello Andre I assume there are two speakers to have stereo sound? So are both connected via bluetooth simultaneously? Did you get it here in SA? Regards Fanus From: André van Deventer Sent: Tuesday, May 24, 2016 5:40 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: B&W speakers arrived finally Hi all For those of you who might still remember – my pair of B&W mm1 speakers finally arrived today. Getting started was rather straight forward. I simply connected up the two speakers, connected it up to the power supply and plugged in the USB port. Was a bit of a problem finding the power button on the side of the active speaker but when I finally found it by accident, the computer recognised it immediately and installed the windows drivers. It now shows up in my audio devices as mm1. The two rather small speakers are surprisingly heavy for their size and extremely solidly constructed. There are two buttons on the left side of the speaker for volume control and one on the right side of the speaker which is the power on button. All of these buttons must be physically press so they give tactile feedback. But there is now physicale indication where they are located. There is a basic little remote control that comes with the unit which I have not yet used. You have to pul out f small tab that keeps the battery door from closing. I messed up things a bit so the greatest part of the tab broke off! Still have to get the rest out. The sound that comes out of these little speakers is quite astonishing. However, if you are looking for booming bass and screeching highs as seem to be the case with much of the modern equipment, you are going to be very disappointed. The sound of the B&W is subtle that is the only way I can describe it. All the frequencies are there that you would need. And the sound is wonderfully clear. Am still running some tests so will get back later if anyone is interested. Regards Andre --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Monday, April 11, 2016 8:13 AM Subject: A Near Perfect Tabletop Radio? I believe I've found to be a near perfect tabletop radio, the DDr-63 which comes from our good friends at Sangean The bad parts first, this radio has a touch screen however one can either use the Remote control or the Sangean Remote App if one has an iPhone or Android devce. On my system I can't get the Sangean App to work on my iPhone for whatever reason but it works fine on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Android phone. The DDR63 is literally packed with features and here are a few. USB port for playback of music from a memory stick. CD Player equipped with MP3 playback function. Digital DAB/DAB+ for models in Australia and Europe. Pandora connectivity IOS dock DLNA compatibility for playing music from a Mac, Windows machine or NAS storage Recording of a source to SD card or USB device. The radio even sounds quite nice thanks to its wooden cabinet and the sound can be further tweaked by the use of the EQ settings or you can customise the bass and treble controls to your liking. Unfortunately there's no way for a person without vision to set either of the two alarms but I do know that the display is very clear - I have this on good authority from those who can see it - so if you're part of a couple then this unit would certainly be a great bedside companion for the two of you. Other nice stuff include both an analog and digital line-out, aux-in and headphone socket. -- ** Those who don't need help are prepared to help themselves

I did know of other solutions but wanted to keep the thing simple and cost affective as the person who started the discussion was on a budget. Re: lossless streaming via bluetooth
Hallo Andre I hear what you say. I do have an Bt transmitter and receiver but I do find that there is a loss in quality, especially when the two devices are more than five meters apart. In the same room, no problem but even in adjacent rooms with a brick wall between, I can hear a bit of drop in quality, however I use this for casual background music and then it is not a problem. I must admit that my bt devices are cheap stuff. The price of each was less than R400.00, so maybe there are more expensive bt devices. The problem is that I could not find any of these in SA, so fortunately my son was in Germany last year and he could purchase the devices there. Interestingly enough, the receiver is a German product, speedlink, and although it was so cheap, it has built-in speech tellling me when it switches on and of and also telling when it is paring. Hello Dane Ok, thanks for that one. Just as a matter of interest: have you ever tried to streem to the Express from another portable device which is not Apple related but which can connect to wifi? Hello list I don't know whether this question is allowed on the list but if not, Please forgive me. I try to record via the line-in of my Archos Studio 20GB player. As long as sound is coming in, it records but if there is just a moment of silence then the recording stops and the file is closed. I looked everywhere in the settings but I can not find a setting that has to do with silences. If this is not off topic, can someone please suggest a solution? I may add that I installed the latest rockbox version for the Archos but even if I reinstall the original the result is the same. Regards Fanus
Re: accessible free sound recorder
Hello Andre I use CDEX. It is simple but one has to use the jaws cursor a bit but one can record .wav or mp3 and others. Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: "André van Deventer" To: Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2013 8:46 PM Subject: accessible free sound recorder Hi all I'm looking for some kind of recording program free if possibly than can record in .wav format. It does not have to have any editing capabilities at all - something like the windows sound recorder but which can record in .wav. Does anyone know of something like that that will run on windows 7 and with jaws 14? I have audacity yes but would like to get something simpler which can record in good quality sound in a simple way. Re: Airfoil For Windows, an accessibility improvement
Hello Dane I downloaded the airfoil update but when I try to install it says I need some or other .net frame profile ... and it gives me an option to download it but there is no specific link on the microsoft page. Do you know how I should go about to get the correct file? Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 9:19 PM Subject: Airfoil For Windows, an accessibility improvement Okay foks, here's an accessibility enhancement in Airfoil For Windows I've been waiting for, I've written to the developers about the issue of selecting the target for transmission of input source for quite some time. Up until recently the only way you could select a target was to take pot luck by tabbing around the screen or moving the mouse, pressing a button and hoping for the best. Some Screen reading software such as WE allowed labeling and customisation of the buttons but this didn't seem to work all that well but it worked well enough in most cases. Now output points such as Apple TV'S, Airport Express units, Iphones, Ipads and other computers running the "Airfoil Speakers" application are listed in the menu which is accessed by pressing the "Alt" key, select the device you want to transmit to, wait a couple of seconds and transmission of your selected source starts. Conversely if you wish to stop transmission, select the device from the menu and press return, transmission of audio stops. Under new versions of Airfoil, you can transmit your source to multiple devices or instances of computers/Iphones/Ipads running "Airfoil Speakers" on your network. Re: program to turn text files into audio files but using eloquence
Hi Andre If you install the trial version of k1000 (kurzweil reader) you get eloquence. If you then use balabolka you can convert text to a .mp3 with the jaws Reid voice. I do not know about the UK english Reid voice. Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: "André van Deventer" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 5:16 PM Subject: program to turn text files into audio files but using eloquence Hi all I know there are several programs that would allow you to turn text files into audio files in mp3 format using the sapi voices on the computer. However, I find the very odd phrasing of especially the realspeak voices a bit difficult to understand. Hence my question: Has anyone ever written such a programme which turns text files into audio files using the Eloquence speech synthesizer? That would also mean if you e.g. like the british voice, it then uses the british voice as it is already installed on your computer? Just curious.
