same as winzip in the old days. I never used 7zip much...winrar provides all
my archiving needs; can even do .zips instead with the mere activation of a
radio button. i have found that rar is a superior archiving format, though
of corse it won't do you much good with mp3s and such unless you want to
just pack all the files in a convenient bundle, since compressed sound files
are already compressed

a Rar is probably a compressed archive. It's an alternative to the .zip

Re: Concerning Rar files

2014-05-20 Thread Chris Skarstad
with ninite all you have to do is download the installer for it and run
it. we're kind of leaving the topic of audio here so i won't say more
than that. but ninite is very easy to use. check the box for the program
you want, press the get installer button and on the next page will be a
link to download your ninite installer for all the programs you've
selected. it can be just one program, or even 2 or 3 or as many as are
on there. and even better is that if there's a new version available you
ccan just run your ninite installer and it'll grab the latest version
for you automaticly. no more hunting around for download links. Ok,
like I say this is drifting off-topic here so I'll not say anymore on that.

Hi. You can't convert .RAR files to MP3. .RAR files are a kind of
digital
envelope. It is a compression tool for multiple file types. If you
have
say 100 files you want to send to a friend, some might be WAVE, some
mp3,
others might be .AVI or Flac etc. The point is you can compress all
these
files into one zipped file and in the process it compresses the files
to a
smaller over all size making it easier and more convenient to upload.
To
compress and then extract the files you need a programme called either
.zip
or 7zip or winrar. Windows XP has a built in basic compression tool
as does

windows 7. Walter.

2012-01-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Given the context, I assume it's an archive manager that can handle RAR
files, and I assume you can find it at: http://www.izarc.org/

According to this web site:

IZArc is the best way to extract zip, rar and many other archives for free

Note that I don't use IZARC myself, but if I still used Windows, I'd
give it a look. It sounds pretty good! I found the above web site with
Google. Further note that it's spelled with a 'Z' and not an 'S',
although Google got to the same web page with either spelling.

I don't think Windows XP has anything built into it that can handle RAR
files. You can create and uncompress ZIP files through Windows manager,
just check out the File pull down, but not RAR files. I think this is
also true with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I'm not sure about that.

Re: How to convert RAR. files to MP3?

2012-01-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think Windows XP has anything built into it that can handle RAR
files. You can create and uncompress ZIP files through Windows manager,
just check out the File pull down, but not RAR files. I think this is
also true with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I'm not sure about that.

RE: How to convert RAR. files to MP3?

2012-01-05 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. To compress a number of files, first select them, or it might be a
folder as you can compress the folder with the files in it. Then go to your
file menu and then arrow up until you find "Send To submenu." If you then
arrow right, then arrow up, you will find an option calledCompressed zip,
press enter here and the files you have selected will be compressed into a
zip file. It will have an extension of .zip. Walter.

Hi. You can't convert .RAR files to MP3. .RAR files are a kind of
digital

envelope. It is a compression tool for multiple file types. If you have
say 100 files you want to send to a friend, some might be WAVE, some mp3,
others might be .AVI or Flac etc. The point is you can compress all these
files into one zipped file and in the process it compresses the files to a
smaller over all size making it easier and more convenient to upload. To
compress and then extract the files you need a programme called either

RAR files are archive files, like ZIP files, so you don't convert them,
you unpack them. I'd recommend 7-Zip from: http://www.7-zip.org/

Last I knew, which wasn't that long ago, 7-Zip was free, accessible and
supported RAR files.

No, you'll have to use Firefox or Internet Explorer to download the .rar
file just like you would any other file. Click on the link to download
the file, make sure you go through the dialogs to have the file saved
and know where it is going to be located on your hard drive. Then you
can use 7-Zip to extract the files from the .rar file. You can start
7-Zip and then point it at the .rar file and do the extract. I don't
have the exact instructions at the moment. I think 7-Zip will also place
an entry in your File pulldown in Windows Explorer, so you can also just
find the file in Windows Explorer and then use the context menu or the
File pull down to extract the files.

Re: rar files?

2009-02-09 Thread nick danger
Houdy Ken,

A rar file is a type of compressed file. similar to a zip file in that it
is compressed and needs a utility such as winrar or iceows to unpack them.
The windows zip utility that is built in to xp will not unpack files like
this.

.rar files pack more tightly than .zip files, or, at least, than older

Re: Need Help with RAR Files

2009-02-02 Thread Chris Skarstad

Hi.

Yup, this is exactly the case. When you have a file with the .rar
extention, it's exactly like, or extremely close to a .zip file,
which means it looks like it's only one file but when you open it, it
actually may contain several other smaller files. On Sendspace for
example, people have been known to use both .rar and .zip files to
send large files to keep them smaller. It's much easier to send one
much larger file than having to send several smaller ones. The .rar
or .zip files you see aren't meant to be converted, at least not when
you first see them. After you extract them, or unzip them in the
case of winzip, or XP's native unzipping support, you can do whatever
you like with the files contained in the archive. But you can't
actually convert a .rar file into something else.

At 04:46 PM 2/2/2009, you wrote:

There's a liberal evaluation period and it's about $39.00. They actually
got back to me on a complaint made during the EVal period.

A .rar file is a compressed file, NOT an audio format. You need to
decompress it, with Winzip, Winrar, or 7zip; then you will have files you

2009-01-27 Thread dean martineau
If you do a Google search for 7zip, you will get this very good free archive
program that among other formats handles .rar format. Rar is an archive
format like .zip. You have to unpack the files before you can play them.
There are lots of other programs that will do the job as well.

A RAR file is a compressed archive, not unlike ZIP. You need to extract
your media files from the RAR file first. I use 7-Zip from
http://www.7-zip.org/ to manage RAR files, but there are a lot of choices.

Re: RAR Files

2008-07-21 Thread Mr. Juan
Hi:
assuming you have the program winrar or a program which can handle .rar files.
the easiest way is to
1 put your cursor on the file name which has the .rar extention.
2 hit the applications key.
3 down arrow to unzip here.
then you'll have the uncompress file or folder.

2008-05-28 Thread patricknc
Winrar will let you play them without making separate files. It just
extracts them straight to your mp3 player which plays them. But it is not
necessary to do 2 separate operations unless you're trying to burn them to a
separate cd or something like that.

Re: need help with rar files.

2008-05-27 Thread patricknc
You have to extract them. Rar is a compression program like zip and unzip.
I know that one way is to use the normal cut & paste method for each cut
which works fine if you have just a few cuts. That, of course, would be
very tedious if you have a lot of stuff. I know the program has a way to
extract a whole file, but I've never had a need to do that, so I never
checked on it. It's a shareware program, but I think you get 30days to try
it. If you don't have too many disks, that should give you plenty of time.

As with zipped files. You have to decompress them first. RAR isn't a
playing format it denotes a type of compressed file.

You can use winrar forever, at least with extracting files, which you'll
most always be doing. I don't know why, winrar was the first and only
extracter I ever used.

Hello

Download win rar from:
http://www.rarlabs.com
I believe. When you open the instal file, install the program as you would
any program (keep pressing enter on next). Now, open the file your trying to
play. Press alt-e to extract. Now press shift-tab until you get to the tree
view and aro through and select the folder where you want the file. Press
enter. This file will be there now, where you saved it. It has been
"extracted"

It will extract .rar files, but I know that winrar extracts .tar and such.
Does 7zip do this? I don't know why the 7 is there, maybe just to

2006-06-24 Thread Steve Matzura
.RAR files are the most widely used on USEnet for distributing large
binaries in small parts (movies, DTS, ISO's, CD images, etc.) You can
specify the exact size you want your archive piece to be with RAR,
rather than pick from a list of sizes with WinZIP. There may be a
place buried in there somewhere where you can set the archive slice
size arbitrarily, but I've never found anything but the list of sizes.

There's a very nice free programme called iceows which can compress and
decompress both rar and zip files and which is free and works well without
scripts.

Don't know the link for it though.

You need a utility such as Powerzip.
Unzip downloads, create your own ZIP files and encrypt confidential
documents with PowerZip. You can use PowerZip's 128-bit and 256-bit AES
encryption to
create password-protected ZIP files to store confidential documents and
files or send them through insecure channels, such as e-mail. It is
integrated
into the Windows Explorer right click menu. It also supports 12 archive
formats including creating and unzipping ZIP, CAB, TAR, BZ2, GZ, ARJ and HA
archives,
and unzipping RAR, ACE, JAR, LZH and Z archives. You can automate routine
compression tasks by recording PowerZip Macro Files. You can also create
self-extracting
archives that can be unzipped without a compression program.

Thanks; I'll look into it. I've never yet come across a .rar file, and I so
seldom even need WinZip. So, I probably won't get to it any time soon. But,
It'll be good to be prepared, just in case, and it's good to know what to
get to get prepared.

2006-06-23 Thread Nick G
7Zip will do, just visit www.7zip.org for it. It's also a great replacement
for winzip.

Re: what are RAR files and how to play them

2006-06-23 Thread Steve Pattison
A .RAR file isn't an audio file. It is a file that has been saved
using the .RAR compression format. One free program that you can use
to extract the files from the .RAR file is 7-ZIP available from
www.7-zip.org. If you are expecting an audio file it is likely that
you will be able to play the audio file once the file has been
extracted from the .RAR file.

You'll need a program called winrar. You can pick it up from:

2006-06-23 Thread joanne
I downloaded something I wanted to hear but it says it's a RAR file, and
none of my 3 players will play it. I did a Web search and it says you have
to have some sort of extraction program to play these, but I was
unsuccessful trying to use the demo of one they suggested. Can these be
played at all or is there a workaround with Win Zip? If anyone knows how I
can get these to play I'd appreciate any help.
