There is no special book shelf firmware, and if you'd had the latest
version of the firmware, you shouldn't have had to do anything. Here's
what it says at the BARD Talk FAQ at http://www.bardtalk.com/faq.php:

4. How can I access the player's bookshelf feature and why is this not
mentioned in the built-in user guide?
Answer: The bookshelf feature was added with firmware version 2.1.0 and
the built-in user guide has not been updated to discuss this feature.
First, make
sure your player's firmware is version 2.1.0 or higher using the method
discussed in FAQ 5. To access the bookshelf, hold down the Play key
until the player
announces Bookshelf and the number of books on your media and the
current book number selected. To move to another book, use the Forward
and Rewind keys
on the standard player and the Next and Previous keys on the advanced
player. When located at the desired book, press Play to start reading.

2010-05-04 Thread Jerry Howell

Hello all,

Let me put my two cents in on the subject of NLS players.

I have had mine since October or November and have used it extensively, but
am no techy expert.

first, if the player is working correctly, the only way I believe it could
tgo from 15 hours to one would be if you forgot to turn off the book or fell
asleep while not using the sleep timer. The player will play until the book
is finished if you don't use the sleep timer. This could be many hours.

Secondly, on the BARD home page there is a link to check on the newest
software. It will give each version and what changes were included in each
version. The bookshelf feature was programmed in to the latest version.

So if this is true about what you say about the latest version having the

Why did I have to download it and install it on my NLS player.
As I said in an earlier post, that's not always the kase.
If you ask me, this is an oversight on their part.
Because not all the machines have the Bookshelf firmware on them, mine
didn't.

Interesting, but the file you're referring to is just the latest firmware
for the NLS player, which is currently version 2.1.3. It isn't any special
bookshelf software. Since you said you were already at the latest level of
firmware, I wonder what was going on with your player. I wonder if somehow
the previous upgrade to 2.1.3 didn't fully take but did update the announce
of the FW level. Maybe upgrading again got it to take. Oh well, the bottom
line is that you got it working, and we'll never know what the original
problem was.

Re: Looking For Some Information Concerning NLS Player

2010-05-04 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Chris,
I think I know what Tom is getting at here.
Some how, he is getting in inaccurate reading of his battery life or the
kind of charge he has left in it after a time.
If the player isn't playing a book, then it's suppose to turn itself off
after a half-hour.

But Tom's player doesn't do that.
I spoke to a Mr. Dave Bond via email at the Bard Talk website about this
problem.

He says, that maybe the battery checks are messed up.
He suggested that Tom calls his cooperating library and ask them to send hem
a replacement NLS player.
But to me, it sounds like something is wrong with the program or if you
will, the firmware that's on that particular machine.

Maybe the firmware needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
But there isn't anything that suggest how to go about doing that to one of
these players.
Tom, if you're reading this, you may wish to call your library and tell them
about the problem you're experiencing with your player.

Maybe they mite have a suggestion for you on what you can do about it.
My best regards.
 John.

pull out the cartridge, ..., but leave it on then I want it to shut off

Hi Tom,

If the player is actually on, but the play button hasn't been pressed, there
may be a problem with the unit if it doesn't shut off after 30 minutes when
it is on battery power.

I really have to watch it though, because since the book starts if a
cartridge is in and the on button is pressed, If I think I am turning the
unit off when it is actually already off, I may be turning it on and
starting a book that may go on for hours. I may do this if I take my ear
phones out before pressing buttons and don't hear what the player is doing.

Hi John,

You may be correct, but from the BARD site there are no four digit versions.
They all have three digits. You mension below that you have 2.1.0.3. so I am
not sure what you had.

when I got my player it was version 2.0.3. This didn't have the book shelf
feature.

The BARD site says it started in version 2.1.0 If you did have atleast 2.1
something, and didn't have the bookshelf feature, then it is a very strange
thing.

Hello Jerry,
Mine has 2.1.0.3.
So if this is true about what you say about the latest version having the
Bookshelf included in it, then why didn't it work for me?

Why did I have to download it and install it on my NLS player.
As I said in an earlier post, that's not always the kase.
If you ask me, this is an oversight on their part.
Because not all the machines have the Bookshelf firmware on them, mine
didn't.

Hello all,

Let me put my two cents in on the subject of NLS players.

I have had mine since October or November and have used it extensively,
but am no techy expert.

first, if the player is working correctly, the only way I believe it
could tgo from 15 hours to one would be if you forgot to turn off the
book or fell asleep while not using the sleep timer. The player will
play until the book is finished if you don't use the sleep timer. This
could be many hours.

Secondly, on the BARD home page there is a link to check on the newest
software. It will give each version and what changes were included in
each version. The bookshelf feature was programmed in to the latest
version.

Tom,

It sounds to me that there are two separate issues.

First, I've found that the NLS player's sleep option works by turning off
the machine after the designated time has elapsed. It does so
automatically. Otherwise, what would be the point? It's supposed to
accommodate people who fall asleep while reading and to save battery power.
Also, as you say, the machine is supposed to switch off regardless if not in
use for half an hour.

I think your machine must be defective.

If your machine does have a defect, what may be a more difficult question
arises. I believe NLS is still behind on its DTB shipments. You'd need to
check your NLS branch to find out what they can do concerning repair and
replacement.

Are you sure the player wasn't playing anything? Did you have a book
paused or something?

It could be a defective player. I would definitely report it to your
regional library. It may be addressed in a firmware update, and you may
not have to replace the player. Either way, NLS needs to know about it
if they're going to fix it.

I think the battery indicator is just an approximation. I only ever hear
it announce how many hours are left. I never hear anything about how
many minutes are left, so hearing that you only have an hour left means
you could have quite a bit less than that. I think the reason is shuts
itself off before the battery gets totally drained is to protect the
battery.

Tom,

Another thought. The defect in my DTB player is that after I turn it off, it
will turn itself back on if I leave a cartridge or memory card in it. Mine
was one of the first issued, and I know other early recipients encountered
something similar.

Is it possible your machine shares the same defect? The answer, in that
case, would be to remove whatever storage device you're using when you turn
off the machine. Because of the short supply of DTB players, I don't plan to
get mine fixed because I can live with it.

By the way, like yours, mine reports remaining battery life in increments of
time

The BARD Talk web site does tell you what the latest firmware level is and
how to check the level you have on your player. It also provides a link to
the NLS site, which you can check in case the BARD Talk site isn't totally
current yet.

I suspect you have the latest firmware though. Last I knew, it hadn't been
updated in a while. I think updates also come on cartridges from the NLS, so
you're player would be updated automatically if you've listened to an NLS

Tom,

I find the on-off switch announces Player on and Player off. A firm but
not overly long press produces these verbalizations.

The machine always goes into key identification mode when neither a
cartridge nor memory card is inserted. Insertion of a cartridge or card puts
the player into playback mode.

Again, this is how my machine works, which corresponds to what it's supposed

Last I checked that was the latest level of the NLS player firmware. Just to
be sure, I went to the BARD site myself and checked. It is still the latest
level of firmware.

Hello Adrian and list: Just experimented a little with the On-off switch
after reading your post; I have a cartridge in there at the moment and..it
works just as yours does! Perhaps I didn't quite have the right touch on
that button!  As for the Firmware..I've checked that out..and it is 2.1.3;
is this the latest one?

2010-05-03 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Tom,
Yes, that is the latest firmware update.
Mine came with that version of firmware on it already.
The only firmware installation I had to do is, download and install the
Bookshelf firmware.

That was the only thing that was wrong with mine.
My best regards.
 John.
