Re: creative zen stone
I've only personally played with two players running Rockbox, but they were both equal with respect to navigating menus, , folders and managing your MP3 files. I would think that all players running Rockbox would be equivalent in this respect. The only differences I would see would be the controls of the player themselves. My iRiver has a slide bar and my Sansa has a scroll wheel. John Chilelli wrote: Hey everyone, I need an mp3 player for carrying around my school notes that I need to review regularly. artifacts in mp3s, was re: Creative Zen Stone
hi. Ok, maybe my ears have just never been trained to hear these sounds. I can definitely tell if an mp3 has a lot of artifacts, like for example if a badly encoded mp3 has artifacts you'll hear a sort of swishy sound, that's the best way to describe it, especially with higher frequency stuff like symbal crashes and stuff like that. But being able to tell something in the 60 to 120 hertz range? I couldn't tell you something like that if my life depended on it. All I know is what sounds good to me, and what doesn't, but my ears aren't trained enough to give you specifics such as that. RE: artifacts in mp3s, was re: Creative Zen Stone
I know what he's describing. many compressed files, especially heard when using good headphones, the sound seeems too compressed - not producing all the different frequencies you might hear in the background as meant by the producer of the track. In addition, yes, there is WMA, WMA variable bit rate, WMA pro and WMA lossless. I own a Pogo radio with MP3 player, which plays the first 3 formats I listed, but I never tried lossless format on it. It may be beneficial to contact tech support of the manufacturer to clerify before the purchase. HTH! Re: Problem with creative zen stone
I don't have any problems rewinding through a track with the Zen Stone. Are you sure you're holding the rewind button down long enough? It'll rewind about 5 seconds, play about a second, rewind about 5 seconds and so on, so it may sound like it's advancing through the track, when really it's rewinding. I hope that makes sense! Chris Chaffin wrote: Hi all, Like everyone else, I like the zen stone and its ease of use. I did find one thing it was doing, and wanted to know if there is a way of doing a certain function. While listening to an audio book, I found that it would skip sometimes during the book. It would only skip a little, like a sentence or two. I found out how to fast forward with the unit, but I can not find out how to rewind with the unit. Now when I say fast forward, I do not mean moving from track to track, but fast forwarding within the same track. If you hold down the forward button, it will move forward within the same file, but the same does not work for me if I hold down the back button. If I hold down the back button, it still advances forward in the file. When it does skip while listening to an audio book, I was just going to rewind it a little and try to listen to that part again to see if it did it again, but like I said, I could not get it to move backward within a file. Now I also considered that it could be a problem with the file, so I checked the file out on my computer using Winamp, and there was no skipping at all. Any help or suggestions with this would be appreciated. Re: creative zen stone
Hi. What do you mean by the serial?not sure about that? the only serial number I know of is a number that's found on the box of the package when you get it, and it's usually used to register your product. and in case anyone's doing searches for it, it's actually called the Creative Zen Stone, no key in there. If by serial you mean the model number for it, there's really only one model and it's 1 gig, so unless you get something else, that's what you'll get. I've only ever seen the Creative Zen Stone in a 1 gig model, so I believe that's all there is. At 12:25 AM 7/19/2007, you wrote: I was reading about the creative Zen keystone player. The 2 GB model is known as the Zen Stone Plus and is supposed to be rather less accessible than the 1 GB Zen Stone. The Zen Stone Plus has a voice recorder and FM radio, I believe, while the 1 GB model is just a music player. Re: creative zen stone
Yeah this is true, but the reviews I've read, as well as my own experience, says it's more like six to seven hours. The Creative Media Lite utility does tell you whether the Zen Stone has a full charge or not, so you can at least make sure you're starting off with a full battery. Kevin Lloyd wrote: Hey Joe. My Zen Stone doesn't play while it's hooked up to the computer. You don't have to wait until it's fully charged before you start listening to it though! :-) I haven't timed how long it takes to charge, but the Creative Media Lite utility will give you the current charge on the Zen Stone, so you can monitor it's charging process with that utility. Re: creative zen stone
Hi. You really don't need the creative media lite utility as far as actually transfering files to the player is concerned. You can simply use windows explorer and transfer them just as you would any other drive that shows up under windows explorer. How cool is that! No extra software to use, none of that. Do you have a bit of usable vision? If so, there is a small orange LED light on the player that continually flashes while it's charging, and when it's completely charged, the light stays on. How I do it is I just plug it into the USB port when I'm not using it. It makes sure that I don't lose the player, and it also makes sure that it's fully charged all the time. So yep, you can use the program, but you really don't have to, unless you're super curious. go to http://www.creative.com/zenstone and it's there. Hope that helps. Re: creative Zen stone won't play.
Hi. It's important to point out that the skin for the Zen Stone just changes the look of the player, it's not the player itself. So when you purchase the skin, you aren't getting a player along with it, all you are getting is he skin to put on the player to make it look different. So if you don't have a Zen Stone, this would be, well, kind of useless. At 07:20 AM 6/8/2007, you wrote: Amazon.com seems to have the Skin tone black real cheap. Re: Creative Zen Stone Player
I'm curious. How do you think this makes it more inconvenient? Are you thinking it's more inconvenient than something which has a rechargeable battery in it but uses an AC adapter to charge it? If so, I'm thinking whether you plug it into a USB port or an AC outlet, it would all be the same. I guess though AC outlets are still more ubiquitous than USB ports. If I go on vacation, like a cruise, I'd still have to bring my laptop just to recharge my Creative Zen Stone. If you're comparing it to something which takes batteries then I guess it would be more inconvenient, when the battery runs down, you have to tether yourself to an electrical outlet or a USB port while it's charging, but if it took batteries, you could just pop a fresh battery in and go. I guess for the price, you could always buy two! OK never mind, you're right, I can see where it would be a bit nor inconvenient! I'm still asking for one for Father's Day though! I have the Creative MuVo with 128M of memory, and having something that's supposed to be just as easy to use, but with 1GB of memory is just too appealing. Plus I see it's size and the fact that it has rechargeable batteries as providing it's own conveniences. I don't have to worry about spare batteries or carrying two separate cords. If the Zen Stone can only be recharged via the USB port.. .this shouldn't pose too much of a problem as you can get A C adapters that allow you plug a USB connection in, so you can charge it that way. Just like the way I pods are charged. John [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/06/07 03:29 Bruce, you wrote: Am I to understand that the Zen Stone can only be recharged by way of the USB port? Are the T50 and T60 from iRiver accessible? [was Re: Creative Zen Stone Player]
Has a blind person used or had any experience with the iRiver T50 or the iRiver T60? If so, how accessible did you find them? From the review posted at http://www.pocketables.net/2007/05/review_iriver_t.html, I read the following, which makes me wonder how accessible these players are. The reference to a joy stick and a GUI, even though they say it's straightforward, give me pause. It does appear that you can just use Windows Explorer to transfer music, but you may have to use the PC software to switch between MTP and UMS mode. That doesn't seem like a big deal, but I wonder if the PC software is accessible with a screen reader or not. Controls Navigation on both players is primarily handled by a small joystick on the right side of the display The joystick is unrestricted in its movement and easy to use, but it's a bit wobbly. This makes selecting various options tricky because pressing the center of the joystick straight down requires actual precision. You can't just push the center and expect the system to recognize it as an OK or Enter command. More often than not, tapping the center of the joystick pushes it slightly to the left, which rewinds a track or takes you to the previous menu option. Navigation would be more accurate if the joystick's movements were limited to just four directions (up, down, left, right). Graphical user interface The T50 and T60 are equipped with yet another GUI not found on any other recent iriver DAP (it's the same one used on the older T10). All that nonsense aside, the T50 and T60's GUI is self-explanatory and easy to use. The main menu is colorful and cute, but the rest of the system isn't really anything to look at. It's all very file-tree and Windows Explorer: plain but functional. Transferring content The T50 and T60 can be formatted to support MTP or UMS/MSC for transferring media with or without the use of software. Drag-and-drop via Windows Explorer can be done in either mode, but other differences exist to make choosing between one or the other pretty crucial. Switching between the two modes requires the use of the supplied Cross Updater software and also deletes all of the content, so it's easier to just choose one and stick to it forever. Keep in mind that you need MSC/UMS to: • Use iriver plus 3 • Supposedly playback podcasts (not sure why iriver says this, as most podcasts are in MP3 format) And you need MTP to: • Use Windows Media Player 11 and other music management software • Playback Audible content Michael Lang wrote: Bruce, you wrote: Am I to understand that the Zen Stone can only be recharged by way of the USB port? Re[2]: Creative Zen Stone Player
hello all, there is more than one solution to the problem of charging your mp3 usb players. i bought a mp3 and usb charger a while ago. this is a small device that looks just like a standard mains plug and has a usb socket on the face, all you do is plug it into the wall socket and plug any usb powered device into it to either run it off the mains or to charge it. i only paid 5.99 UK pounds for it about12 US dollars. the place i got mine from doesn't have this particular model any more but they do have an alternative one that has some extras. mine was for UK use only, but the one they have now is a travel version which comes with adapters allowing you to use it in the UK, USA, Europe or Australia. this model costs 9.99 UK pounds about 21 US dollars here is the url for the item: http://www.gizoo.co.uk/Products/AvCommunications/iPodAccessories/TravelCharg erUSB.htm pete. No justification is necessary on that point. The BP is one of the best purchases I've ever made, and I am now just glad I didn't purchase the Zen stone ... not because there's anything wrong with it, but because I'm better served by my Book Port and I'll take the larger size for what I'm offered. creative zen stone won't play.
Hi all! I received my creative Zen stone today, plugged it in, deleted the sample tracks from the music folder, and pasted in some mp3 files of an audio book. I waited until the player was charged, plugged in the headphones, and held down the play button for one second. I heard a little popping sound which told me that the player had powered up, but no other sound. I tried pushing all sides of the wheel, thinking that the volume might just be too low. I assume that the portion of the wheel with the little dot on it is volume up. What could I be doing wrong? Should I have put the files in the route of the player instead of in the music folder? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Re: creative Zen stone won't play.
Hi Gary. The zen stoen is so simple that a manual really isn't necessary. As Alison has discovered, you do have to hold the play button for 2 to 3 seconds and then wait 10 to 15 seconds for playback to start. I'd recommend taking a look at the following site to get a good overview of the player: http://www.hartgen.org/zenstone.html Regards. Re: Creative Zen Stone Player
Hi Bruce. I see the BP and Zen Stone as serving completely different purposes rather than two products competing in the same market so it's more likely that you'd want both rather than one or the other. I don't have a BP and haven't seenit's specs but I'd be very surprised if it had a great spec for playing music when you consider it's main purpose in life is to play the spoken word. The zen stone on the other hand is primarily a music player designed and built to provide the best playback quality possible in the tiniest size to compete with apple's products. It has a frequency range of 20 hz to 20 Khz whereas typically, players like the olympus ds50, milestone and I'd imagine the BP will only cover 50 hz to 19 Khz. The zen stone battery life is approx 10 hours on a full charge and it would of course be ridiculous to assume you'd need to take a laptop with you to recharge. These types of players always come with an adaptor to charge from mains and these can be hhad very cheaply. Regards. As an alternative, aren't there battery charging units that plug into a USB port? Power comes from loading batteries into the charging unit. That way one could use rechargeable NiMH type batteries to easily fuel the portable charger. Am I assuming correctly about this? It is called the Zen Stone player from Creative, and it costs 25 pounds or 40 Us dollars. The player was released on 3 May this year and so is very new and is available just about everywhere you can think of including retail outlets and Amazon. The player is extremely small indeed and weighs less than one ounce and has no screen. It has a mode switch on the side (for cycling between some features such as repeat, play all or shuffle), and a typical wheel: up and down for volume, left and right to skip tracks or within a track, and play/stop in the centre. The mode switch, if pressed and held, will allow you to skip to the next album or folder which is a nice feature. The Zen Stone can accommodate up to 1 GB of storage. The great thing about this player is that no special software is required to transfer regular WMA or MP3 files to it. You can simply copy and paste using Windows Explorer. However, there is software which can be downloaded called Creative Media Light, which allows you to not only rip tracks from audio CD, but in addition once the audio extraction has taken place, the music is automatically transferred to the player. So for a person who does not want to get into the business of copying music to the player, this could be very good. There's a bit of scripting needing to be done with that, but I intend to issue some free JAWS scripts for this if I can get that particular item to work. Apart from that and one or two small issues of labelling buttons which I have done, the software is quite usable. The good thing about the software is that when the player is connected to the computer for charging, the status line will report the percentage of the charging process. Now to the final great feature. This player will allow you to play DRM Windows Media files and Audible content. When playing Audible content (up to format 3 only), and you stop playing the book and move to another folder, your position within the book is retained! I think that the storage capacity of the player, and the fact that the quality of format 3 is quite listenable, makes the use of this format quite acceptable. If anyone would like to know more about the player please let me know. But if you want something really simple on which to listen to music, podcasts and particularly Audible books, this is a very inexpensive option. If it does play DRM content, and I've no reason to doubt the claims made by the manufacturers, then this kind of player could be the start of people moving away from the iTunes music store (thank goodness) and to other music providers who offer DRM content. Now, my big question is whether or not it can properly handle files from Net Library. I know the device can play WMA with DRM but as you know, Net Library files are huge and I haven't found a player yet that will handle them properly. Yes, they will play, but fast forward and rewind don't work properly, and your current place in the book is not remembered if you switch to another file.
