Re: re soundforge audio studio

2016-07-31 Thread Dane Trethowan
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that instead of marking you can
"Select" your audio by using the shift plus navigation keys and you can
use further keyboard shortcuts to preview your select sound so you know
you have everything correctly selected before you apply an operation
such as cutting, copying, deleting and so on, setting markers - whilst
affective - is a rather long-winded way to do things sometimes, reminds
me of the old Wordstar when one had to mark the beginning and end of a
block, its so much easier with Microsoft Word and everything else now
where you just select what you wish to work with.

I've never seen any difference in marking the end first rather than the
beginning, sounds a bit of an old wives tale that one .

to delete, use the i for left side and o for the right side which highlights
between them.
You can change the characteristics of the normalization by changing the
amount of attack and release time in MS, and whether or not RMS values are
used or "peak" value.

Oh hi, I meant that somehow, I couldn't get the cursor to snap to the
area I was studying or modifying as easily in 9 or above as I can in 8.
I will probably buy 11, because I have since v5 when it was "Sonic
foundry."

I'd like to know more about Izotope accessible abilities in sf11 and the
EQ and "exciter?" is that part of Ezotope? EQ, many aspects and
algorithms available, but are aspects of EQ in Ezotope available which
aren't part of the Sony plug-in, etc?
"groove mechanic," where to get, etc.

THANKS!

RE: re soundforge

Hi Steve,

I am using SF 11 Pro on a 64-bit system without issue.

As for Izotope, some of the repair stuff works and some doesn't. I use EQ
and Exciter mostly, so I can get vocal detail out of bad recordings.

I also use a stand alone program called Groove Mechanic, which is primarily
designed for cleaning up vinyl and tape, but the noise reduction and gating
is fantastic. If you have a file with noise on it, then do send it to me,
and I will process it with GM just to show you how good it is. GM is about
30 bucks if I remember right but is completely accessible. GM is designed
to get rid of all kinds of hiss and it does it without question. Crackles
too. Anything like that is fair game, even 60hz hum.

Hope this helps.

All the best

I know Jonathan Mozen had done one for SF 4.50. I had even borrowed the
tapes from a friend who has them. Cool thing was too that the consepts
Jonathan talked about still apply and work. At least the ones I tried and
wanted to do any ways. Oh yeah, with SF Pro. Yeah SF Home Studio can do some
stuff, but to try all he is doing you must have SF Pro.

Hi all,
When editing a sound byte, I use to be able to do the following, and now I can
not. I will put
these steps down first and then explain more.
1. I press the letter q to make sure cuing is on.
2. 2. I then press the spacebar to start the sound byte playing.
3. 3. Next, I would hold down the left shift key and arrow to the
right.
4. Sound forge would play the sound byte as I move to the right,
stopping when I stop arrowing.
However, now in order to hear where my selection has stopped, I have to listen
through the whole
section that has been selected. This takes up much more time. I am not sure
what has gotten
unchecked or changed and am hoping someone on this list does.

So simply put, I once could just select the sound and soundforge would just
play the selected data.
If I stopped arrowing, sound would stop immediately. If I moved the arrow
right or left, sound
would respond immediately with the new stopping place. I hope I explained my
question.
I would be glad to share my phone off list withsomeone if they are willing to
help out. It is
probably something I accidently checked off or on.
Thanks for reading this long email.

Hi Dan,

There is an option called Seek cursor on playback which is toggled on and off
with the letter f. Try pressing f and see if that
helps.

Re: soundforge query, converting mono to stereo?

2013-12-25 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, if a signal is mono, you really don't want to make what's called
pseudo-stereo. I've come across some old-time radio shows where the signal
is mono, and the person, trying to make it sound better, has applied the
pseudo-stereo effect. This kind of gives it an echo effect, and it doesn't
sound natural.

Re: soundforge 10 makinc clicknoise during recording

2011-04-25 Thread Steve Jacobson
Which Sound Forge are you using, Studio or Pro? If you use Pro, have you
figured out how to use the equalizer?

It is likely that your laptop just does not have as much power as your desktop,
but there are things that might help. It is possible that you would have
better
luck with one of those USB sound cards because there may be more buffering.
However, you might also try turning off features you are not using on your
laptop such as your wireless connection to avoid network activity that might
affect resources. In some cases, turning off the real-time virus protection
could
make a difference as well, but of course, only do that if you are disconnected
from everything. It is likely that you are getting these clicks because your
computer gets busy and doesn't capture the digital representation of your
recording. Also check the settings of your sound card, and use only as much of
a
sampling rate as you are going to use. Some cards default to a high sampling
rate. You might also need to check power saving options. If you are
recording and your hard drive goes into standby mode, it could respond slowly
when Sound Forge writes to it and data could be lost. Frankly, if you are
making serious recordings, you might want to consider a stand-alone recorder to
do the initial recording and then transfer it to your computer. I believe that
some of the recorders that Olympus sells will record into WAV files now.

I have done some of this to have encountered the above problems, but there are
likely those here who have more expertise as to specific steps you might
take.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Re: soundforge 10 makinc clicknoise during recording

2011-04-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
This is one of the few reasons why I just don't use Sound Forge to
record anything if I can help it but there are a few things you
can do to minimise the load on your processor and drive to give Sound
Forge an easier time of it.

If you're Running Windows XP and later versions of Sound Forge - which
you are - than buffering isn't so much of an issue.

Firstly and most importantly make sure that your hard drive is as
optimised as possible, Diskeeper is my tool of choice here but if you
don't have that then use the Disk Defragmentation tool which comes with
Windows.

Next disable the recording counter which shows you the position of your
file, I think that's what its called.

Sound Forge help file has a full section on this sort of stuff, think
its called Optimising Sound Forge, been a while since I've read that you
know as I don't use Sound Forge all that often these days.

Dan,

Go into the record dialog with control+r.

shift tab until you get to a combo box called "method".

It should be set to normal.

Do not set it to one of the automatic settings because one of those will
automatically end recording after a fixed time which, in your case, was 10
minutes. However, it is a useful function if you are doing something
like

unattended recording from a cassette and you want the recording to finish
after 45 minutes.

Hope this helps

I fortunatly had a victor stream as backup.

The steps I used for recording were.
1. Press control plus r.
2. Press alt plus r to start recording.
3. Press escape to stop the recording.
4. Pressed the spacebar to listen to the recording and only 5 to ten

What is the maximum for recording with Soundforge and what did I do wrong?
We would actually like to use this process for recording in the future.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I've just tried separating out the individual tracks of a stereo
recording in Sound Forge 7.

I tabbed to the left hand track and found I could highlight the whole
of that one track by pressing control-shift-end. Copied that to the
clipboard and did control-E as you are doing to copy the highlighted
track to a new window. This worked fine, and I ended up with a mono
track containing just the one track. Did the same for the lower,
righthand track, which also worked.

I found also that if you move focus to one track with tab and use
control-A the two tracks get highlighted and so these two get copied
to a new window.

So, I don't know if that helps, but isolation of one track seems to
work for me in SF 7.

Brian, as far as I recall, pressing tab in Sound Forge while focus is
on the wave editing window moves the cursor to left, right, and back
to two channel focus. So, if you have a two channel file open you
should be moving between track one and the other track going in
reverse.

I cannot understand why you are pressing tab before saving the file
though. Shouldn't that be control-s for regular saving, or alt-f a
for save as? If you do that without pressing any other intervening
key the file should be saved in stereo if that's how the file was
recorded.

soundforge, and have it set for sterio, i can hear the tracks going
in to separate speakers. when i want to save the tracks, i press tab,
but instead of getting one track, i get both tracks coming out of one
speaker. if i press tab again, i get both tracks coming out of the
other speaker. i can't work out what is the trouble. obviously, it
isn't my lead, or i wouldn't hear the two tracks coming out of the
speakers, one in to the left hand speaker and the other track in to
the right speaker. if anyone has ever had this trouble, perhaps you
found out the problem. i have been using this method of recording
from the a p h for some time, ever since someone told me how to
separate the tracks, using it satisfactorily. it is only lately, that
i have run in to trouble. brian.

Ah I see what you're talking about now. No, its not out of the leagues
of anyone, that's why I suggested these things in the first place
because they're a cheap and accessible alternative.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-17 Thread Curtis Delzer
If you upgrade to sf9, you get the noise reduction for no added charge, at
least I did, for a total upgrade price at the time of $99.95, which was very
nice. You might be able to buy it all for $149.95? including noise
reduction, it really is worth it since, even if you don't like 9 which I
don't for reasons well known on this list, the noise reduction is updated
from 2.0A to 2.0G which costs by itself more than the upgrade cost, and it
works with all versions of Sound Forge from v4.5 and up.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-17 Thread Jerry Richer
The package I sell includes all the built-in Noise Reduction features
of Sound Forge 9 plus Noise Reduction version 2.0.
You wrote: "and does the Noise Reduction plug-in include click and
crackle removal for vinyl?
Or the vinyl plug-ins separate from noise reduction?". I'm not sure I
understand your question but if I do then I will say yes.
I don't know how much the package costs currently. I do have a call in
to my sales representative at Sony. The price on this package has been up
and down as much as fifty dollars in the past couple of years. Tentatively
it looks like the price is more in the $289 area than the $250 area which is
what I sold it for nine months ago. I'll report back when I get a firm
price.

While it's nice if the person recommending a particular application also
offers a tutorial in its use, it isn't required and shouldn't be. When I
began participating on these lists, much of what I heard made no sense at
all but I assumed if others were doing things, I could too. I read and
asked allot of questions and a year later I found myself posting a reply
which helped a newbie. Wow! What a good feeling. If you think this list
is rough, try a news group. If you have to go until you're better grounded,
good luck.

How much is the package
and does the Noise Reduction plug-in include click and crackle removal for
vinyl? Or the vinyl plug-ins separate from noise reduction?

The Sound Forge I sell comes with the Noise Reduction plug-in as well
as CD Architect. That's been the case for a couple of years. I have heard
however of people purchasing Sound Forge new without the Noise Reduction
plug-in while I was selling it with the Noise Reduction plug-in.

I'm not talking about anyone being knocked, rather, that what you are
proposing may be out of the leagues of some of us, regarding installing plug
ins, to Soundforge and all the ramifications that this feat may involve! I,
for one, have used Soundforge 6.0, for quite awhile, but, on only a
rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc., etc.,
etc.. In other words, I haven't explored the Noise Reduction realm, much at
all and wouldn't have a clue, as to getting rid of "machine" noise, as
opposed to hiss and other things! Does that make my point of view a little
clearer, Dane? I am not knocking you, either, just trying to prevent
"Knowledge Frustration"!

Sure! I'm not knocking anyone, the point I was making was that the
Noise Reduction plug-ins marketed alongside Sound Forge are not the be-

Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-16 Thread Curtis Delzer
I use the sound forge noise reduction plug in in only that manner, capturing
only noise at minus 100 DB and by that I mean, no speech or breath sounds do
I use as capture material because that causes swishing sounds and under
water sounding results. No thank you, I hear enough of that. Gold Wave does
a good job of that as well, and for fifty bux, that is a bargain, and if
used correctly it will do quite an amazing job as well.

Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

Now before we go any further here, I think it worth reminding everyone
that you do not have to use the Sound Forge Noise reduction plug-ins
specifically for reducing noise or hiss, in fact its probably better
that you don't as there are far more affective and far more accessible
plug-ins out there which will work with Sound Forge and other
compatible software such as Adobe Audition, Total Recorder etc. Its
been a good while since I've used some of these things, I've referred
to them on list before so I'll dig around my software collection and
get back to the list with the name and the web site of the plug-ins I
purchased.
All adjustments and settings were completely accessible with a screen
reader providing feedback when adjustments were made.

2007-11-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
mastering the world of PC Audio has for me required a big investment in
learning and gaining an understanding of audio concepts as well as tools.
Also, if one is not highly familiar with their screen reader and Windows
accessibility features, they will likely be lost and confused. Much of
this learning happened for me off the Internet with books and audio
tutorials. I have not found a quick fix for gaining skills in this area.

Ah I see what you're talking about now. No, its not out of the leagues
of anyone, that's why I suggested these things in the first place
because they're a cheap and accessible alternative.

You guys are out of my league, as I wouldn't even have a clue as to what to
do with a soundprint! Too bad, really, that this proves my point. I was
saying that I could not perform anything but rudimentary tasks, in
Soundforge; you have completely overlooked that part of my point of view,
gone right over it and said, in effect, "Anyone can do this even if they
can't do it!" No logic there, is there? Where does that get you? You are
just musing to the ether!

Yes I agree with that, in most cases its extremely easy because all
one need do is to capture a sound print and work from there hardly any
additional adjustment is required.

Well you don't need tutorials as every edit box and control has a self-
explanatory label on it which screen readers use and hey! they come
with a manual so I don't see the problem.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, well I thought I pretty much explained it or perhaps I didn't
explain it correctly.
A sound print is simply a portion of sound you wish to take out of
your recording, in this case a portion of hiss.
You set up the noise reduction plug-in or system to capture a portion
of the hiss which is called a noise or sound print, you'll usually
find examples of what you wish to remove or silence to a degree in
between tracks or at the start and end of recordings.
Once the print is captured, its analysed by the plug-in where upon you
can adjust the DB of noise you wish to be removed.
Plug-ins have various additional settings which can be set up before
capture takes place but again for most people they need not be changed.

accessibleOf course, its up to each individual what they use, but the
plug-ins I use (and I've mentioned on this list) are so that
no
scripts of any kind are required, these plug-ins are not just 1 plug-
in, rather you get a whole set of them including accessible bass and
treble filters, accessible graphical equalizer packages and so forth.
Now I do apologise, I've been trying to track down the url for these
plug-ins but as Murphy's law would have it, when I want something it
makes itself scarce but again, I'm sure you'll find my comments on
these accessible plug-ins in the pc-audio archives.
