Re[2]: MZ-S results with film

Unless MZ-S is manufactured in one large batch (which is not the Pentax way), it's likely the firmware will suffer changes. It always happened with others' cameras - it took several revisions to stabilize. As for printing the actual time exposure in B mode - this is a exclusively a software issue. Re: Slide Labeling Codes
Hi, Since I store my slides in binders, I just label them with frame numbers and group holders containing slides coming from the same film - each group is separated with an A4 sheet of paper put in a holder. On that sheet of paper there are written (also frame numbered) exposure parameters for each frame (shutter, aperture, lens, focal length, filter, flash, compensation and other - I always write down exposure parameters for each exposure I do), name of the film and dates of shooting. Any particular film you can recommend me for shooting under mild tungsten lighting? > My opinion would be to go with flash, much easier I > think. :) That would be good, but I'm always pretty bad with flash shots. Furthermore, I plan to place a red piece of velvet cloth as the background (about 2 inch behind the subject), and I'm afraid the shadow will be obvious. I don't own a dedicated flash unit, so it all depends on the seldom-used built-in flash. I intended to use a powerful torch and cover the light source with some tissue paper to disfuse the light, and use 2 of these as a diagonal frontal lighting. Regards, Kelvin __ Do You Yahoo!? It's the strap clips that cause the problems. They are plastic, and if you look at the piece of plastic that controls the lateral motion, it's about as secure as a bread-bag clip. RE: K1000 vs KM
The KX is a step up from the KM. It has a different light meter, which is more sensitive and accurate, especially in low light. In the viewfinder you have aperture readout on the top (commonly out of alignment, so check to make sure it works on a used KX), and shutter speed on the right side - a translucent blue needle points to the shutter speed selected with the shutter speed dial, and a black needle points to the shutter speed recommended by the light meter. Simply match the two needles for correct exposure. The KX is also one of the three Pentax K mounts with MLU (the other two are the K2 and LX). There is a KX MOT that accepts a motor drive, but it's expensive (KEH had one for $250+). There is also a KM MOT but it's rare. Have you considered using daylight? Set up near a window (preferably with northern exposure) and make a simple reflector with aluminium foil to bounce some of the light back onto the object. I've done this a few times with good results. Since you'll stop down and may use some slow shutter speeds make sure that you use a tripod. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Tamron SP 24-135, A setting??
I have seen the aperture ring-less Tamrons. Basically how it works is the lens is permantently set to 'A'. Fine while using a camera like the PZ-1p where you can adjust the aperture on the body, but the MZ-5n and ZX-M (my camera) don't allow this, so you are stuck with the modes you can use while the lens is set to 'A'. On a manual body like the K1000 you are simply screwed. I learned the other trick from the list. IIRC this is how Tanya was able to use the Tamron 135mm with KA Adaptall on her ZX-50, the KA adaptor electronically makes the minimum aperture setting into the A setting, but on the aperture ring you still see 32. July PUG Rambilings
" Ice Flower " by Ken Waller, USA My favorite of the month Ken. All I can say is WOW! Very nice. Perfect title. Congratulations on the contest win as well. It seems as if I've seen this before. Did Epson publish it somewhere in an ad? Yours has been my favorite two months in a row (considering the source, you may not appreciate the complement). :-) " Little Paradise " by Jaume Lahuerta Nice Jaume. Looks like a shot from a travel book. Humble suggestion: I find the washed out sky detracts from a beautiful image. What about cropping the sky out, leaving only 6 mm of it. Makes me want to go to Spain. " Once Upon a Time " by Mark Roberts, USA Wonderful Mark. It really draws one in. It feels as if I can step into it. I know they are corny now, but this looks sort of like one of those life-size wall murals that was popular in the 70's. It looks like the cover for a fairy tale book as well. " Star " by Bruce Dayton, USA This is really neat Bruce. Very abstract. I am somewhat boggled by it. As I sit back and stare it transforms itself. Maybe into a flat piece of polished petrified wood. It also has a spinning effect in the tree leaves, which I don't understand the cause of. Also the star appears to have entered the frame, followed by a trail of smoke to it's right (the sky). It was hard for me to choose between this one & Ken's as my favorite. I may need to get a fish-eye. My son just attended a music camp here (not really a camp, but a week long instructional symposium). He plays viola. What do your girls play? " VLA at Sunset " by John Cohen, USA Cool John. I'm running out of words, but I like it alot. Cold & surreal, that's what it is. Astronomy is a favorite interest of mine. " Inquisitive " by Bill Sawyer, USA Cute Shot Bill. Good posing job you did. I like the highlights in the little guys eye. " A Different Chain " by Gianfranco Irlanda, Italy Interesting. Sometimes the tighter the composition the more the photo "speaks". " Jennie " by M. Patrick Hunt Very engaging shot. I like the use of the wide angle on this. Nice angle for the shot and a great pose as well as composition. " Island of Terschelling " by Wessel Sijl, The Netherlands I like this and how you noticed the light. It has a double exposure effect. " Naturemort " by Igor Gitetcky, Russian Federation Beautiful effect and colors. I like it. Not sure I'd drink dish soap or bath salts. I guess if I was thirsty enough. :-) " Summer Snow " by Edward Kreis I like this and the blowing snow. About three weeks ago, we had snow flurries at our house in Idaho. It was a hundred degrees F several days earlier. " Sounds of Silence " by Karoly Kovacs Nice shot & title. I don't typically take this kind of shot so I don't have much to say. It would make a nice fine art greeting card (as do many this month). " Drops of Dew " by Smirnov Andrew, Russian Federation Very nice and abstract. I'm curious if it is done on black and white or color. I always feel enriched by the PUG. It's often like going on a hike or taking a trip around the world. I am amazed this month by the creativity I see in the shots and the eye for detail and beauty that's demonstrated by the submissions. It's inspiring and educational (both photographically and otherwise). Thanks to all the contributors and maintainers. Tom C. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. OT: Tiger's Maw
I was looking through some of my recent tiger lilly photos, trying to decide which ones to get enlarged, and how large, when I realized what photo of a lilly I want: I want a wall-sized (meters on a side -- 3mx4m or larger) macro shot staring down into the center of an orange tiger lilly with enough depth of field that the (stamens?) projecting into the foreground are sharp, large enough that when you stand in front of it, you'll feel as though you're about to fall in. _Ideally_ I'd like to take the photo myself, but that's not as important as _having_ it. Now the question is: how would I go about getting this? That's a lot of DOF to ask for at that magnification (and then there's the question of whether I could get it sharp enough in 35mm for that enlargement). How feasible would this shot be in MF? LF? Somehow I think it's going to be a long time before I have that photo. OTOH, it's more likely to happen than the painting that's been stuck in my head for twenty years that I can't paint. The last time I even left food sitting *outside* in the campsite was in 1989 at Rocky Mountain National Park. We had eaten fried trout and hush puppies for dinner. Around 4:00 AM there was something at our table (now know it was raccoons). But for that thirty minutes or so in the tent, hearing the pot/pans get knocked over and the grunting/licking sounds... it convinced me never to leave food out. Everything including the ice chest gets locked up tight in the back of the car, including the dirty dishes and campstove if we didn't get time to wash them. Now that the MZ-5 and MZ-3 are discontinued Japan will do with the MZ-5n like the rest of the world. In other words, this is a release of the MZ-5n on japanese market. Obviously, I'm out of luck on the FA* lenses, although, as Bill has pointed out to me, big glass is light-colored for functional reasons, so I can't grip too much. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: July 5, 2001 13:32 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: New MZ-5n On Pentax Japan Home Page Bucky, It might just be a new black finish! MZ-S vibrations (or lack thereof)
The MZ-S is almost certainly the most vibration free Pentax ever. It offers a substantial advange over the Z-1p, or for that matter the LX, in this regard. I've shot with a 600/4 + 1.4X converter at shutterspeeds as low as 1/15s with tripod and they are razor sharp. I' have also exposure made at 1/90s with the same combo resting on mother earth, and they are also sharp. With the Z-1p, everything below and including 1/180s is a hit and miss almost regardless of support. This is truly amazing; I wasn't aware that miror + shutter vibrations was the culprit - I though it was technique. This is of course good news for macro shooters as well. What is all the fuss about the K1000
Hi Having returned to serious photography after a good few years out. I am amazed at the prices people are paying for the K1000 and the like. The K1000 was my first serious camera 20 years ago. Were they really that good ? I always thought they were pretty basic. I had mine a couple of years and changed to an OM2 and thought this was a huge leap forward in terms of metering lens quality handling etc. I am currently using an ME which I probably think is superior, although I have not picked up a K1000 for many years. The real question is do I need to call up my mate who bought it off me for 20 quid 15 years ago and remind him it was just a long term loan and he can have his 20 quid back :-) regards Jez - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. MZ-S AF for Macro
The MZ-S + FA* 200/4 ED IF Macro is an outstanding combo for AF macro shooting. I've shoot insects at close to 1:1 with AF and flash, handheld with AF and every single image is razor sharp. The auto AF point selection work surprisingly well. Anyone who has tried a 200 Macro lens at close to 1:1 handheld will know how awfully dificult it is to maintain focus in the right place with the miniscule depth of field this outfit provides. Still, it is a solid camera, and it was made until 1997 I think, so you can get them in very good shape. It is better than the ME in my eyes, since the ME doesn't have a manual exposure mode. Re: What is all the fuss about the K1000
It's a classic. It's metal. It looks like Dad's. It's one of the few that doesn't provide any automation, making it a perfect student camera (you can't use a crutch). It's as capable as any Pentax body of capturing great images. Your ME is superior in feature-set, but is no more capable of getting a good shot than is the K1000. I'm a little envious of the one I bought for my son, even though I have a MX and ME Super. It's simplicity is attractive. The DOF would be about 4.4 inches. It's the enlargement that's challenging. The 35mm shot described above will give a field of view of 7.6 x 11.5 inches, so you would be looking at having several lilies in the photo. The large field of view makes the enl;argement difficult, no matter whether you shoot 35mm or 4x5. If you want just one lily enlarged, you'll be starting from a small cropped area of the original neg. Sure, you could enlarge this to any size. The determining factor for "sharpness" at wall-size (assuming you used hi-res film/lens to take a sharp photo, and got a sharp enlargement) is the viewing distance. The tilt-and-swing guys have a technique to get more DOF from a given focal length. I bet that is the most practical method to get the photo you want. Or maybe there is some slice-and-dice computer methodology using multiple images to get one sharp composite. -- Happy Trails, Texdance http://members.fortunecity.com/texdance http://members1.clubphoto.com/john8202 - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: What is all the fuss about the K1000
Hi, Jez, I think that somewhere along the line, the K1000 got the reputation as the "ideal students' camera", most likely since it was fully manual, so it forced the student to be aware of settings, and therefore what the camera was doing (or more to the point, what the student was doing to the camera). It was cheap, sturdy, simple, and had an incredibly long run. It (unlike my beloved Spotmatic) took bayonet lenses, so new lenses were easy to come by. Unfortunately, over the years, in order to keep the price competitive, both the body and the innards started to be made of plastic, compromising (imho) quality. In addition, it was, by the end of it's run, made in non-Pentax factories in such places as Hong Kong and China. But it maintained that reputation as the ideal students' camera. I'm always amazed when I see a group of students from the Photog Course at Ryerson Polytechnical here in Toronto galavanting about town, to see that about 1/2 of them have K1000's around their necks. I guess that the fact that so many of them were made, as opposed to products such as the KM and KX means that there is a ready supply of them on the used market, ensuring that the used prices will remain high. Personally, I think they tend to be overpriced, compared to the above-mentioned bodies, or even Spotmatics (a K1000 is really a bayonet-mount Spottie F without self timer or dof switch). But, reputations being what they are... regards, frank jez wrote: > Hi > Having returned to serious photography after a good few years out. > > I am amazed at the prices people are paying for the K1000 and the like. > > The K1000 was my first serious camera 20 years ago. Regarding manuals, The last I knew, Pentax USA (assuming you are in the USA) will mail you a photocopied version for around $2.00. If you go to their website and get their Customer Service Phone #, one of the phone menu selections will be to request a manual. You leave your info, they send you a manual with a bill. RE: User report on Lowepro AW packback
The plastic clips that cause the problems are the ones on the ends of the shoulder straps; it is like a little plastic sring loaded thing. Its a stupid and cheap design, when, for the sake of an extra dollar or two (probably less) they could have had metal ones there like they use on just about all of their other bags, including smaller and cheaper ones. Watch out; they WILL fail on you. Great bag design; it's too bad they had to scrimp on those two little parts. Cameron Hood - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I've bought two K1000s in both in superb condition for about $70-$80 each. You just have to know where to look. :) Both of the one's that I've owned were purchased from pawn stores. Yes, you might run into a bad unit now and again but if you know what you're looking for you'll be able to avoid those cameras. Besides, a reputable pawn dealer will allow you to return the camera after shooting a roll if there's something wrong with it. Nick __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Unfortunately, no split-image screens are available for the z1, that I know of at least. This was a concern of mine as well when I upgraded from a K1000 to the z1p. But I've learned that I actually like the plain screen better. It takes a little to get used to but it does work. :) The indicator light is helpful too. Re: Old vs new...
I can understand your sentiments of holding those older lens for the very pleasure of the feeling they give. They do give a different "feel" or "touch" and this goes true for about any manufacturer: manual focus lenses display superios handling. My FA lenses were consumer optics and very plastickry indeed. Nevertheless certain AF lenses do offer better optical performance despite the downside of being less pleasant to use in manual focus mode. I can recall purchasing lots of manual focus Pentax lenses for peanuts and loving to own and handle them. But the truth is that I took most - and best - shots with FA consumer zomms at that time. Strange thing to reflect upon. Re: What is all the fuss about the K1000
The K1000 became a classic both because it was seen as an ideal student camera with just the basic controls, and none of that fancy stuff, and many photo teachers recommend it (but I would think they would want DOF preview, but that's another thread). It also gained a reputation back in it's day as a quality, dependable, rugged camera while still being cheaper than the competition. In later years, as it's been pointed out, many of the parts were changed from metal to plastics, and the quality went down. Now a days, I think the K1000 is overpriced on the used market, probably from beginners buying one just because somebody told them too, not realizing there are better cameras out there for that price. If you like the K bodies, I would get a KX or a K2 as these were the top of the line. Or if you want to combine the compact size of the ME with the fully mechanical and manual K1000, seek out a MX. Of course, if you can get your K1000 back for 20 quid, I would do that... Always nice to have a second body. Re: Trouble with adapter "K"
The problem is that this Russian lens comes with an adapter for Russian "K-mount" cameras. This adapter will never fit the lens you have purchased on an original Pentax body. The bad news is that you have to spend the extra bucks on the original Pentax adapter. The good news is that you have purchsed a very chep lens thta is not so bad... Re: PZ-1 Questions
I'm sure there's a technique out there somewhere but I've never seen it. But you can definetly tell when the subject is in focus. To me the image just pops, in the finder. Of course, in difficult situations I do depend on the focus indicator. I must also say that I've been blessed with fairly sharp eyesight and that this may not be possible without it. :) Interestingly enough, I've recently seen an article about how SI screens might be bad for that type of thing, cannot remember at the moment where I saw that. Re: What is all the fuss about the K1000
I agree with you about the on/off switch, Tom. That's one reason that I've avoided Spotmatic F's. Walk around without the lens cap on (gotta be ready to take that piccie, right?), or even worse, leave the lens cap off when you get home and leave the camera on a table or something, and your (increasingly hard to get) mercury cells won't last long! -frank aimcompute wrote: > DOF preview and I would have liked an on/off switch. > > Tom C. > - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: What's all the fuss about the DOF Preview
I dunno, Bill. To me, one of the main advantages of an slr over a rangefinder camera is that you see (almost) exactly what the film sees. Including dof when you stop down. You're right that doing it "by the numbers" is a good exercise, and good to know how to do, but nothing beats seeing it through the viewfinder, imho. As far as the darker viewfinder making viewing the image "relatively worthless", I've used bodies with stop-down metering exclusively for the past 30 years or so. I guess if I can get used to it, anyone can! :-) regards, frank "Bill D. Time to borrow or rent an opaque or slide projector and get yourself a couple of nice paint brushes (or, if you want to go low tech, draw a grid on your print and use a $5 chalkline to scale up the grid on your wall). Even though your original image may not be sharp enough to blow up as large as you wish, when you draw/trace and then paint the edges, you can make them as sharp as you like. The original has "Made in Japan" engraved on the back of the top plate. The middle series was assembled in Malaysia and the plastics were made in Hong Kong. No matter which series is available, it seems the used price is higher than what they were new. I was fortunate to buy the Japan Model in like new condition for 125 USD. I actually swapped a Plastic model for a MX in excellent/non-pro condition. Re: Interesting item on eBay web site item#1251500453: Pentax Super Program 35 mm Camera Outfit
Interesting, you'd think a pro photographer would at least have an AF200T (though the AF280T would be the more obvious choice I think) for his "pro" outfit. I mean, why both to get a Super Program, which has TTL flash, then cripple the capabilities by using a non-TTL flash unit on it. Plus, I find the use of the 135/2.5 Tak to be another interesting "pro" choice here. Also, isn't it clever who disengagedman also happens to have the rhstamps web site as a part of his description. MZ-S
Hi all, I had the pleasure of a 5-minute play with an MZ-S last night. To anyone who hasn't seen it yet, don't look at it unless you can afford one. I'm going to echo what others have said and say that its size and weight amazed me. So small and light, and the body still felt really strong. I think the sloping top is a really good idea as you don't have to lean over the top of the camera to check or change your settings. I didn't get much of a play with the AF but I was suitably impressed at its ability to automatically pick the right focus sensor, and its ability to track movement from one sensor to another. It seemed pretty easy to use but after being so used to the Z-1p it would take a little getting used to (I really should use the K2 more). I don't totally like the placement of the control dial because I'm left-eyed and wear glasses, so I end up with the knuckle of my thumb on the right-hand lens of my glasses. This also happens with my Z-1p, especially when I use the metering buttons on the back. I also wasn't very impressed with the tiny little viewfinder but I could easily see the whole thing (remember I wear glasses). I didn't check the eyepiece for plastic or glass. The camera had been sold to someone else and I didn't want to risk making any marks on it. It does sound very quiet after the Z-1p, but it didn't have film in it so the winder only had to cock the shutter. I would love to see the data imprinting as well. If anyone wants to scan a full-width film strip to show us exactly what it looks like, that would be appreciated. I didn't have any time to get to grips with the exposure compensation/bracketing dial. I do wonder how easily the metering pattern and film-drive-mode switches could break off. From what I've seen and heard I would definitely like one but the finance department is a little weak right now, particularly if I buy the A*300/4 I'm looking at. I reckon this would be a great wildlife camera. Small, light, tough, quiet and good AF. If only I had a long AF lens :) Cheers, - Dave David A. Mann, B.E. When numbering , I initially use a step of 10 so that I can then insert slides into the sequence without the numbers going haywire. For example, sunsets are catalogued D-xxx, and the first one was numbered D-10, then D-20, and so on. I find this very flexible, and you can have up to 26*26*1000 slides under a single alpha classification! I used to use a paper-based system for cataloguing, but now use the database system which I wrote myself and was tested by a couple of PDML people earlier this year (any feedback, guys?). Oh - don't get me wrong, I agree that SLRs are worlds better :) > You're right that doing it "by the numbers" is a good exercise, > and good to know how to do, but nothing beats seeing it through > the viewfinder, imho. Right - as you, I use a rather "crippled" combo of SuperProgram w/ m42 Takumars via the K-adapter for 95% of my photographing. I am effectively in "Permamnent DOF Preview Mode" since exposure must be made "at aperture". However, after having used the old 6x6 folder and then a few Canonets for earlier years in my latest round of "interest photographic", I just got my first SLR's a mere 5 or so years ago. By then I had become aware enough of DOF effects that I rarely relied on the mechanical preview - rather just the scales on the Takumars. Much easier than the charts I carried around w/ the non-SLR cameras. I like that my 6x9 Bessa II has a DOF scale incorporated into the focusing knob (no need for charts :^) > As far as the darker viewfinder making viewing the image "relatively > worthless", I've used bodies with stop-down metering exclusively > for the past 30 years or so. ... as above - I'm usually in "Permanent DOF Preview Mode" and am rather used to framing in the darkened viewfinder, knowing that my DOF is sufficient for my intentions. > I guess if ... < We! > ... can get used to it, anyone can! :-) Bill - Bill D.
