Pentax Zoom

2002-04-01 Thread James Adams

Hi Paul,
Don't know if this got through, but I am having emails to you returned, so
will post this to PDML.

I was out with my Son this afternoon, and spotted some cameras in a
Jeweller's window. On entering the store, I saw a case full of S/H camera
gear near the back. In the corner I noticed a zoom mark Pentax, so asked to
see it. It was a Soligor 90-230 f4.5 with PX Adapter(has roller-manual
switch for DOF). As I already have the adapters for PS, PK and Nikon Pre-I,
this was a chance I couldn't miss, so I got it for CDN$82(Taxes inc.). Apart
from a minor repair and a missing Tripod Collar clamping screw, it is
perfect. It only took me 20 minutes to tighten the screws which were loose,
or had dropped out behind the collar.

I now have the following lenses to fit any of my PS, PK or Nikon Pre-AI
mount cameras:
Soligor 105mm f2.8 Telephoto
Vivitar 300mm f5.5 Telephoto
Vivitar 400mm f6.3 Telephoto (PX Adapter)
Soligor 90-230 f4.5 (PX Adapter)

I'm hoping to get a Soligor or Vivitar equivalent to of my PS Hoya HMC
70mm-150mm f3.8. Also I would like a Vivitar 24-80mm or 90mm zoom.
In all it's been a good day.

Re: Bodies w/ Spot Metering?

2002-04-01 Thread Steve Pearson

Is it me, or is the Ricoh XR-M a copy of the SF1n? Is
there not an older, manual focus Pentax body with spot
metering? I guess I would like to stay with the
"feel" of the metal bodies made by Pentax. What about
the Spotmatic bodies?

Again, thanks for all your help. I'm still
undecided...

RE: OT venting anger with chain store

2002-04-01 Thread Butch Black

Unless Agfa XPS is the current amateur emulsion then it very well may be
"exotic" to Wal-Mart. The Agfa amateur films tend to change balance
significantly when they go to a "new improved" emulsion. My normal Agfa
channels print OK but I have a customer that shoots a pro emulsion. I have
to print her stuff so it looks badly red in my monitor so it will print
correctly. I don't see enough of it to set up a separate channel for it.
Check on the back of the print. If you are lucky there will be a series of
N's, letters, and/or numbers printed. Those will give you any color or
density correction that were made (if any). From there, if you understand
color theory you can tell them what they need to do to get an acceptable
print. Unfortunately most minilab operators for drug store, discount dept.,
and chain minilab/ camera stores, don't really know how to color correct, or
what a correct print is supposed to look like, so even if they are willing
they may not be able.

My ricoh xr-m has it (called xr-x in europe). xr-x3pf has already been

to read up on these k-mount underdogs. You do lose the A-setting. I am
not sure but you could check it the chinon model that provides program

Like he said. M100/2.8 is a very nice lens and a good focal length with
which to gain experience. Or even the M100/4.0 Macro. Only slightly more
expensive. You sacrifice some speed, but gain a quality foothold in the
world of macrophotography.

Honeywell Pentax SL manual offered

2002-04-01 Thread Stan Halpin

I was browsing through the "junk" box my local photo guy occasionally puts
out. One item that caught my eye was a slightly tattered August 1969 copy of
the SL manual.

One nice note: "No, we do not guarantee the quality of photographs when
brands other than Takumar lenses and Pentax accessories, such as lens
extenders, are used."

Available to anyone who would like it - pay my cost, $.50, plus mailing.

Contact me off list please.

Mike,

B&H and Adorama are not particularly cheap when it comes to medium
format. I believe it has to do with volume purchasing (or lack
thereof). My local dealer was almost the same price on MF gear so I
ended supporting them as they were able to demonstrate the equipment.
Harry's Pro Shop in Canada (http://harrysproshop.com) and the Caymen
Camera (http://www.caymancamera.com) are much more competitively
priced.

Does anyone know how the new Ilford Gallerie smooth gloss compares to
Pictorico Photo gallery glossy paper and glossy white film? I understand
they both use a microporus ceramic coating, is this correct? I love the
Pictorico line but their high prices and limited availability of bulk (100
sheet) packs are frustrating. If I can find something comparable at a more
reasonable price I'd be happy.

Joao,

I use the Silica Gel desiccant with indicator coloring for my equipment and
negatives/slides. It seems to work well, I don't know much about the light but I would
guess that you would want some thing with a fair amount of UV. Those DC powered
fluorescent bulbs or some of the new LED flash light technologies strike me as a way
to provide light with minimal heat/power.

BTW were do you live in Brazil? I am headed there this summer.

due for a CLA, and I'm sure that this LX is no exception. But it is
probably a very good buy, since it should be in good cosmetic and

Re: fungus

2002-04-01 Thread Angel Ramos

The best way to go, as I did , is to buy or construct a completely
sealed chamber ( mine is about 36cm by 36cm, by 39cm) with a seal fitted
door. I bought a dessicator chamber from Fisher Scientific, there
should be a laboratory equipment seller in your country, I also bought
a 500g bottle of indicating silica gel, which can be re generated in an
oven at 130 C or , as I do, I use the microwave oven. ( 2 minutes cycle
on high power, repeated until the stuff is back to deep blue color) .
Having a lamp in a small cabinet could be dangerous because of
temperature concerns and fire hazard due to shortcircuits. If you want
more information email me off list.

Re: Fast Med Telephoto needed...

2002-04-01 Thread b_rubenstein

Portland is like every other place in North America: you
can't rent Pentax 35mm gear. If you really want a lens
like this for the night, plan on renting a body to go
with the lens. Nikon and Canon both have good 70/80 -
200/2.8 zooms. A sharper, lighter Nikon lens is the
180/2.8. Canon has a 200/?? (something fast). For a
stage performance I would probably first look at Canon
to get an IS lens. Just make sure that you are
comfortable with the body, regardless of brand. You
should feel right at home with a MF Nikon body.

Re[2]: O T Venting anger with chain store

2002-04-01 Thread Paul F. Stregevsky

How about this dialog, which I had with a woman at the counter of a mall
1-hour store in 1990:

ME: Do you sell Kodak EktaPress 1600?

SHE: No, sir, Kodak doesn't make EktaPress in 1600. Just 100 and 400.

ME: Oh, they do. It's been my standard film for at least a year or two.

SHE: No, sir, you're mistaken.

Later, I wished I had said, "Then if I can produce a box of it for you here
within a couple days, will you pay me a hundred dollars?"

But that was nothing compared to a telephone dialog I had in late 1991 or
early '92 with a salesman at Penn Camera:

ME: Hi, do you have any used Olympus OM-4Ti's?

HE: No, sir, but you must remember, that camera just came out. There won't
be many used ones out there yet.

ME: No, the OM-4Ti came out in 1986.

HE: Sir, it just came out, but if you want to believe it came out in 1986,
it came out in 1986.

ME: EXCUSE ME. I'M SITTING HERE WITH A FOLDER OF COVER STORIES FROM POPULAR
PHOTOGRAPHY, MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY, PETERSON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC, AND SHUTTERBUG,
ALL DATED 1986 OR EARLY 1987. EACH HAS A TITLE LIKE, "INTRODUCING THE
OM-4Ti" OR "THE TOP OF MOUNT OLYMPUS." DON'T TELL ME IT JUST CAME OUT!

HE: OH. SORRY.

Re: 6x7 repair cost

2002-04-01 Thread Jim Fellows

I live about 15 minuets from Apex up in New Hampshire, they are an
authorized Pentax repair facility. They wont touch much of anything in the
35mm world for much under $200.00. That usually includes a full CLA, plus
replacement of any needed parts within reason. Anything they can't handle
goes to Pentax in Colorado. They also don't usually work on anything unless
they know parts are available.

2002-04-01 Thread Brendan

This is the Sigma 28-105 F2.8-4 at the corners, all
the corners are
like this, it's the Gumpy distortion (tm). The funny
thing is it's
fine in the center and the edges, just not the
corners. I'm wondering
if it's hood is causing it but there's no light fall
off and it's not
the UV filter since it does it with out it, a 4x6
cropped to 3 1/2x
5 1/2 looks perfect.

The SMC-M 75-150 f4 should be perfect for the ME Super
Another alternative is the SMC-M 135 f3.5
Both can be picked up really cheaply. They are compact and easy to handle.
The 75-150 is a one-touch zoom which makes for easier use. I think either
of these would be ideal for an 8/9 year old boy.

Do you have any specific Ricoh model numbers that you
can reference? Are you sure that they will all accept
my Pentax lenses? Wouldn't I lose some of the
metering (i.e. "A" settings) of my SMC-A lenses?

Thanks for the help...

Check the specs on the PZ, and ZX series. The usual suspects would be the PZ-1p, ZX-5n

Yah, well, cynic that I am, I doubt the conventional wisdom about the
M28/2.8 too. That I will have personal knowledge of as soon as I get a roll
of film developed and put a loupe to the negative.

I would be more ready to believe that you had a defective lens, than that
Sigma designed a worthless one. I can not believe that they are not adequate
for 4x6 snap shots, and would be surprised if they didn't do nice 8x10s.

Andy,

Guess that depends on what the earth is going for these days. You can find
some 35-105 3.5 Pentax A series lenses for around $150 US or maybe a 45-125
F4 for under $100 US. There are quite a few good short zooms made by
Vivitar(Series 1 are the best), and Tamron, oh and I guess Tokina. You can
find any of those for $150 US or less.

Would a 70-200 be too much. There are some good 70-200 F4 lenses for $130 or
less.

If you are looking at the faster glass, chances are you will have a good
lens. Any 2.8 - 4 type lens will give good results, most of the time.

Aaron can atest that I'm not one of those, yes I'm a
difficult customer, annoying and irritating but never
go off handle. I guess I've been spoilt a bit after
seeing what I can do in my own B&W basement knowing
just how much bad handling on my part it takes to
scratch negs, what out of focus, off colour is from
slides etc. Not to mention what Aaron did to an
already out of focus neg he made look better than the
4x6 print with his digital 8x10 inkjet print. But
enough is enough this time when there are colour casts
and splotches on the prints ( Aaron saw the walmart
prints and laughed ). I kindly showed them the off
coloured lady bug and the 2nd set is a different off
colour. I mean if it was printed yellow, red or orange
I would be happy but green, blue and now purple lady
bugs? I'm just hoping it's an April fools joke at this point.

Well, the A35~70/4.0 might fit the bill. I think they're available for
less than $100.00. The lens also offers a close focus capability.

It may be a bit long, but I recently picked up a Vivitar Series 1 70-210/3.5

Fast manual zoom for ME Super

2002-04-01 Thread Andy Phillips

Hi,

My elder son (age 8 pushing 9) has a Pentax ME Super that I bought for him a
year or so ago. He has the 50/f1.7 standard lens and also a Sigma 24/f2.8
that we picked up at a local camera fair. Despite his age, he has a
reasonable grasp of photography, and has taken some good pictures. He's now
decided that he needs another focal length, but also would like the
flexibility of a zoom lens.

The problem is that as a small boy, he can't be expected to hold a (fairly)
heavy camera at slow shutter speeds. Given the British weather, there are
occasions when even with ASA 200 film, you find yourself taking pictures at
1/60th f2.8 or so. The consumer zooms I have for my pZ-1p tend to have
maximum apertures in the f4-f5.6 range at best, which limits their
usefulness especially with slower films. I don't want to buy him a zoom that
he can't use without a tripod!

The second problem is that my impression is that zoom lenses have improved
over the past few years, and that old zooms can be pretty crummy. On the
other hand, the newer autofocus lenses don't work well on manual cameras,
because of the looseness and short travel of the focussing ring.

Finally, the question: can anyone recommend a reasonably fast (f2.8-4)
manual focus zoom lens (say 35-105mm), available secondhand and not costing
the earth? Alternatively, can you recommend a short telephoto that might fit
the bill?

It is so bad that I pleaded with Brendan not to buy it from me (not me
personally, but the store). It is the single most awful lens I've ever
mounted on a camera, and I own the infamous SMC-M 28mm f2.8. In fact, I
originally begged the distributor to not make me take it -- I had to
take a package to get certain prices, and based on my experience testing
that lens when I was at Sterling, I knew I'd never be able to
in-good-conscience sell it.

This isn't a wholesale condemnation of Sigma's lenses, mind you: my
Sigma 24mm f2.8 is an excellent performer. It ain't no SMC-FA* 24mm

I'll certainly give it that. It is entirely possible, too, that I've
merely seen two horrendous samples and Wendy has a good one, or that
maybe Wendy hasn't shot under the right conditions to see Brendan's
amazing Gumby Distortion(tm). The lamp post bows in two different

Pat,

I'm thinking that I have the same bag as you. Is it a bit more like a
briefcase with an opening lid to see all? I really like the bag but
cannot put the 67 body with prism in the way you are supposed to put
35mm cameras. It is too tall. Or do you let a big lump sit there.
Other than that I quite like the design of the bag. I use it for 35mm

Even my new-in-1998 67 occasionally has not-quite-even spacing, though I
think it may have to do with the way I load it. I'm still testing.

With such big negs with a fair amount of tension and a non-motorized

an LX.

2002-04-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If autofocus is neither needed nor desired, there are several well-built third-party
choices from the good ol' days; some are PKAs:

Vivitar 24-70 (f/3.8?)
Kiron 28-70 f/3.5-4.5
Vivitar 28-90 (f/2.8-3.5)
Rikenon 28-100 f/4
Vivitar Series 1 28-105/2.8-3.8
Kiron 28-105 (f/3.5-4.5?)
Rikenon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5
Vivitar 28-105 f/3.5-4.5

Most have a modest macro capability, although sometimes at the short end. Some
reportedly have problems with vignetting, pincushioning, or flare, but that could be
said of most zooms in this range.

I have collected comments on most of these. If anyone has experience with one of the

Re: Closet-LX

CLA = Clean, Lubricate, Adjust.

Even though the camera may seem to work well, and not exhibit any signs
of a sticky mirror, lubricants dry out and age, rubber looses it's
flexibility, the seals and foam may be starting to deteriorate, so
getting these things looked after now, before something obviously goes
awry, is your best long-term investment. Have the film transport
checked as older LX bodies sometimes suffer from uneven frame spacing,
which, in time, can get worse. Have the metering system checked too.
Call it preventive maintenance.

Astia is gone. There is still stock available in 35mm in the Canadian
market, but no 120 or 4x5. Last time I ordered from Fuji they still had
20 roll press packs of 35mm.

Don't know about the Astia-Sensia thing, but since Sensia isn't
available in 120 I haven't really looked into it, either. They don't
have the same product codes or edge marks, while Press 800 and Superia

Whatever is working for you with the others you should apply to NPS as
well. NPS, like NPH, has a very narrow exposure latitude, and
underexposure causes some ugly grain. Also, I'd have your meters
checked out, or have a look at your metering technique to discover the

1/30 is quite possible hand-held with good technique, with or without
MLU (though it is tougher without MLU). Did you see the Sgt. & Mrs.
Pepper picture I posted a while back? 1/30 f2.8, MLU, hand held, room
light at night with Delta 3200. Let me know if you want me to repost
the link.

Welcome to the Brotherhood! My 67 (non-II, bought in 1998 as the II was
being introduced) was my first new-new camera, too. Great feeling,
ain't it?
