Re: Best Spotmatic?
I have so many questions about the Spots, but so little time. Why are they so liked by everyone? Did someone say that Mamiya & Nikon lenses will work with this camera? Is that why they are so popular-even more lenses to find on the used market? It appears that they are well built also, as some of you have had them for a number of years. Thanks for all the info. --- Jim Apilado <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I don't know how uncommon they were but the > Spotmatic IIa with its tie in > with a Honeywell Strobanar was interesting. RE: lens for pz-1
Hi Wayne The new FA 24-90mm gets a lot of nice words from the critics. Especially it's supposed to be equally good all the way through the whole zoom range (better than mid range). The FA 4/28-70mm is discontinued (replaced by the 24-90mm) but is very good/good value for money, but slow. I have the Tokina ATX PRO II 2.6-2.8/28-70mm. It's brilliant, but about the same price as the 24-90mm, I guess. It's discontinued and replaced by a Tokina ATX 28-80mm, which I have no info on. I wouldn't buy Sigma lenses due to "plastic build quality". I guess, I'd go for the FA 24-90mm (great range, very sharp), if affordable! Or a Tokina ATX 28-70mm (very crisp) if available. Suddently you'll get razor sharp, pro-looking photographs! Re[3]: We missed it :-(
Yeah, I'm getting much better at spotting 35mm vs MF in magazines and prints. It is obvious even at 4X6 - the color gradation, richness and detail are evident. It really makes it worthwhile to heft the weight and bulk around when you get results like that. Re: Uhhhhh...crack smoker?
Hi Paul, I did the same and received a similiar note. It just sounds as if this guy just did not know Pentax. As you said, seems a nice guy, just misinformed by someone. He also rasied a question to me about whether Pentax ever made a body with six pins for the flash contacts. He has been given a flash, supposedly Pentax Z series compatible, but it has six pins on the shoe. My PZ-1p has 4 contacts, the AF500FTZ has four pins, as I've never seen a n AF360FGZ, I'd assume it has at least one more to account for the additional features, but a six flash contact body? I tentatively told him no Pentax body I was aware of has six flash contacts. If we could get a full framed digital > sensor that fit onto the back of a 35 mm camera it seems to me that we > could have the best of both worlds. The most fundamental reason is that it wouldn't be economically viable. Secondly there are quite difficult technical design considerations, the most prevalent of these being that size of the full frame sensor and its associated glass protection covers won't allow any lens to achieve infinity focus if it were rested on the film rails. There would also be great difficulties in interfacing the essentially mechanical shutter with the electronic digital imaging system. Hi Team, I've been quiet for a bit but I'll bite on this one. I've been using digital (Olympus E-10, optical SLR, w/ full manual focus and exposure options) fairly intensely since last November. I must say that there are areas where digital imaging shines but overall I have found that film still has a mighty edge over digital WRT picture quality and resolution (pixel count is of minimal concern). Aside from the obvious advantages of digital like immediate image availability and lack of film/processing costs I have found digital cameras brilliant for shooting still life and macro images particularly where you have plenty of light with good control (little need for flash). Also the generally small sensor size and reduced focal lengths of the non-interchangeable lens digital cameras provides excellent macro DOF as a great side benefit. The potential for learning though experimentation with lighting is excellent as is the fact that colour temperature offsets can be easily applied with out the need for optical filters. However digital imaging sensors are slow, you might as well disregard the array of ISO settings and leave any digital camera set to it's minimum ISO setting as image quality degrades significantly as the ISO is increased regardless of hyped techno innovations. The trade-offs of setting the ISO of a digital camera to a higher speed are similar to pushing film but more so as often errors like dark noise, hot pixels and banding become prevalent. Be aware too that shooting digital is like shooting slide since once the highlights are saturated all detail is obfuscated. In my experience photographic exploits that require good photographic quality on media with a speed faster than 80-100 ISO are best shot on film where the images aren't required for immediate distribution. This is based on my experience with over seven digital cameras now including the very recent Canon PowerShot S40 4MP PnS. I'd love a Pentax digital body and I expect to pay a lot for it but it won't supersede my use of film. Lets hope that the Pentax engineers spend time concentrating on quality image delivery, user interface and processing speed than simply joining the pixel count war. Re: ME Repair Manual?
Glenn, The return spring on the ME is notorious. I had one break years ago. The repair was expensive because the bit of spring got into the gears of the winding mechanism. It would be a good idea to remove the broken part. You will learn to live with pushing the rewind lever back in. Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Is the repair manual for the ME one of the ones that has been scanned and put online already? I've got an ME that suffered a fall a while back (I've since switched brand of camera strap, as the style I was using managed to let go of two different cameras on different occasions). Everything seems to work fine except for one annoying detail: after I advance the film, I have to push the lever back into place myself; it no longer returns on its own. Someone (Fred?) suggested that it was probably a spring having gotten knocked loose in the bottom, so this afternoon I finally pulled the bottom plate off, and sure enough, there's the return spring in plain sight. The end that attaches to the chassis appears to be properly connected, which means it must have come loose from the shaft (it doesn't look like it's coiling when I cock the shutter, so I figure it is in fact a knocked-loose spring problem instead of something else getting bent and creating too much friction or something). What I can't see is how to get at the attachment point without making a bunch of other, tinier springs go sproing. I'm at the point now where I have to decide a) whether to press forward, b) whether to close the thing back up and live with it as it is, or c) hope that I can save up enough for a professional repair before it absolutely drives me crazy. (Note that this is my number four K-mount body, so I shouldn't have to deal with it all _that_ often ... but it does get its share of film run through it anyhow.) Anxious to see this one
While driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway this afternoon, I happened to see a wild turkey standing just off the road. Stopped the truck in the middle of the road, jumped out with the MZ-S/Tamron 75-300 and started looking through the brush. She started running, then went airborne close enough to fill slightly more that half the frame. Only got one shot in though before she disappeared over the tree line. Unfortunately, it was frame 2 of a 36 exposure roll of Portra 160VC. Hopefully it will stop raining long enough for me to finish at least most of the roll over the weekend. Thanks, Bill, Great idea, and cost effective, too. Of course I have Canadian Tire money! What Canadian doesn't? OT: Little perks
Stopped by one of the local photo suppliers today just before they closed (actually they were putting the key in to lock the door when I opened it...) I bought 20 rolls of 3200 delta in 120 format. The sales guy said "Hey - you're my last sale of the day" to which I replied, "Cool! Do I get a bonus?" He gave a good deal on the film, remembered my tax number, and threw in a T-Shirt as well. May have to shop there more often! Just my little rant for Friday Afternoon. Cheers! BC - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Collecting cameras
I collect cameras in a squirrelly sort of fashion. I kept buying MXs because I liked them, then I realised I couldn't possibly use them all so now I only have 3. When I got the black MX then I just had to have the black ME Super. And of course what goes with a black MX and an LX? Yep, a black KX. I am a random impulse buyer. My only real collection is of Kershaw folders, which of course includes the obligatory 110, penguin and king penguin. Still looking for a Raven - so if anyone knows of one for sale. Re: Tamron adaptall overexposes
>>>Hi, I have Tamron 135 mm f2.8 lense with P/KA adaptal mount. It tends to overexpose with both of my bodies (MZ-5n and Z-1p). Overexposure is at least 1 stop. Does anyone else has such a trouble with Tamron adaptals? Kari<<< Kari, Four or five years ago I had a similar experience with some of my Pentax A lenses when shooting them in Hyperprogam mode on my PZ-1 and PZ-1p. The only lens I specifically remember was a Pentax A 70-210 f4 but I believe I had at least a few other lenses that produced overexposed slides (1 to 1.5 stops). This did not seem to happen if the camera was in center weight metering (I can not remember about spot). You can always set your camera to compensate by under exposing but I found the simplest thing to do was to put the body on center weight metering when using non F or FA lenses. I can not remember if I noticed this on my ZX-5n. This was discussed by members of this group 4 or 5 years ago but that was back when Pentax Discuss was on the Pentax web site and I would assume those proceeding have long since been lost, forever lost in cyberspace. Even if they do exist I would think they would be very hard to find. The two thing I remember from these discussions where (1) Not everyone experienced the problem and (2) When overexposure did happen, the most commonly proposed cause was a difference in the programing of the PZ series bodies compared to earlier ones (those with chips of course). As I said earlier, I think this was unique to Hyper Program Mode. All of this rambling assumes you are shooting slides and have the camera in Hyper Program. If you are doing these thing, try a roll on center wieght metering. Good Luck. George Baumgardner - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I know that one of my friends has a digital back for one of his medium format cameras (mamiya?) Why isn't a digital back available for one of the K-mount cameras (my preferance would be the LX). A friend of mine recently acquired Nikons digital SLR for work, this thing looks like an SLR, even sounds like an SLR (I wonder to extend that was marketing). The only thing about it is that the digital sensor is half the size of a 35 mm frame and so everthing is half sized in the view finder. If we could get a full framed digital sensor that fit onto the back of a 35 mm camera it seems to me that we could have the best of both worlds. RE: Who to believe ?
Hi When your'e using a zoom, the effective aperture shown in the CAMERA display/viewfinder is RIGHT - The aperture ring on the camera doesn't "know" how far you have zoomed. This occures when you use a zoom that does not have the same aperture all the way through the zoom range (like the 3.5-5.6): 3.5 at 28mm, and 5.6 at 80mm. When using non TTL-flash this is a small problem. That's one of the reasons, that zoom lenses with constant aperture often are prefered! When my Pentax MZ-5n tells me I am at a given aperture, and the aperture ring on my zoom is on another aperture, which aperture am I really using ? The zoom is a Sigma 28-80 3.5-5.6 II Macro. I give an example : I set the aperture ring on 5.6, the LED tells me I am at 9.5 at 80mm, 8.0 at 50mm, 6.7 at 35mm and 5.6 at 28mm. Nice shots, Brendan. Toronto girl makes good - well, I don't know if she's originally from here, but she worked here before making it big in the US. I don't know if you remember, or ever knew, but she was one of the hosts of the TVO kid's show Polka Dot Door. When my kids were young enough to watch it (it's the most boring show on TV, but toddlers are entranced) I, being the good parent, would sit down and watch it with them. I did that, of course, because it's good for kids to watch TV with their parents. And, with Tonya Lee Williams to look at, I could put up with boring. regards, frank Brendan wrote: > Just a few keepers from the film festival, Tonya Lee > Williams, aka Olivia from YNR. > > http://webhome.idirect.com/~trini/photo/tonya4.jpg > http://webhome.idirect.com/~trini/photo/tonya3.jpg > > __ > Music, Movies, Sports, Games! http://entertainment.yahoo.ca > - > This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Carry-on of big-glass
When I flew to Halifax and back (from Toronto) last week, I was amused when they asked me at both security checks to "turn on my cameras". I guess they wanted to hear them make electronic beeping or whirring sounds. I had to explain to them that they were mechanical bodies (ok, I know that the MV isn't, but, whatever), and obligingly took of the lens off one and body cap off the other to show them the mirrors. I asked if they wanted to look through the viewfinder to make sure they could see through them, and they declined. Then, they asked me to take off the lens caps of one lens, which I did, so they could look through it - I also flicked the aperture lever to show them that it worked. They didn't check all the lenses, just one. No sniff check. Didn't ask me to open my film canisters. That was it. No big deal. Oh yeah, they did ask me to turn on my portable CD player, to they could watch the CD spin. The whole thing took less than a minute. Not too intrusive, but a bit re-assuring, I suppose. regards, frank Timothy Sherburne wrote: > Thanks for the update, Ryan. Re: Vivitar 2x macro focusing tele converter
Geoff, It is said to be very good, and it usually sells for 2-1/2 to 3 times the 20 pounds you can get it for. It goes to 1:1. Mind you, you won't be able to focus at infinitity; the Vivitar not something you'll want to keep on your lens at all times. There's also a PKA version. Taka, The ME-II is quite a bit lighter than the Motor A. It offers great flexibility. And it feels so good to hold, I use three of them, all used without batteries. ME Repair Manual?
I know I ought to bookmark these things the first time I see them, but... Is the repair manual for the ME one of the ones that has been scanned and put online already? (Note that this is my number four K-mount body, so I shouldn't have to deal with it all _that_ often ... but it does get its share of film run through it anyhow.) Has anyone else here done this repair on an ME or another body in which that section of the mechanism is the same as an ME? Pointers? Clues? Thanks. -- Glenn, attempting to repair cameras as an excuse to procrastinate filling out my tax return. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. : Electronic shutters versus mechanical shutters
Au contraire, mon ami! With an electronic shutter, the COMPUTER can adjust it for you. Whether the Super Program or the ZX-M, or any other. BUT Take out your Spot, KX, or MX. (Try LX as well.) Set the SS for 1 sec. and fire. Easy to time. Set the SS for 1/2 sec. and fire. The difference is clear. NOW Set the ss *in between* and fire. You should be able to tell the difference. Why? Because of the Mechanical coupling. There is a difference. The shortcoming is that it's not as predictable as the electronic units. But it IS Stepless. You want to keep the same aperture setting but get just a fraction more or less exposure? Just turn the SS dial a little bit. Don't worry about the detents -- they're just for convenience. You're free to stop anywhere in between. Try THAT with your electronic gizmos, ya helpless techno-wimps! Collin ( And I haven't gotten into the political or faith threads at all this past 2 weeks. Ain't y'all proud o' me! ) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Electronic shutters are (or can be) infinately variable. If the meter calls for 1/361 sec. that is what you get. RE: Collecting cameras
Hi I don't really collect cameras - I try to sell those that I don't use (for economic reasons) - but I still have 10 SLR's (35mm, 6x6, 6x7) (6 Pentax) and some 35mm and 6x9 rangefinders. I sertainly don't want cameras that don't work. I once got a Kodak baby brownie in original box w. a flash for 2$ at a flee market! I had a complete Topcon outfit for some time, but I let it go to help finance a trip to South Africa (No point in having many nice cameras, if you can't afford to travel/use them). Unfortunately I don't have a Spotmatic, but I guess a nice one will come my way some day. I think my nicest (beautiful manufacturing) cameras are the K1000 and my latest, the 67. RE: PENTAX need to move soon (long rant)
I think ASAHI's philosophy goes something like this: High end SLR diggies are for pro's - especially news photographers - due to the high cost/low image quality. These people don't use Pentax, but Nikon or Canon. Low-end or "consumer diggies" are for ...consumers/non pros. Pentax makes some nice ones. These are made for the same people, that use basic/affordable 35mm SLR's, that Pentax makes so well. Pentax also makes 35 SLR's for dedicated amateurs/non pros and to supply the pros, who mainly use Medium Format Pentax'es (645 and 67), with nice, high end "Limited" or "Millenium" 35mm cameras (LX2000,MZ-S, Limited Body??, Limited Range finder??). In short - a pro Pentax is a Medium Format Pentax. So, a pro Pentax diggie is a MF diggie (maybe even a "Limited Diggie": If Pentax makes a pro diggie, it has to be a digital back for/or a digital version of 645 and 67. A pro Pentax diggie a Medium Format diggie - just like a conventional pro Pentax is a MF Pentax. That makes sence. A digital "35mm SLR" doesn't! So, I gues we'll have to wait for a 35mm CCD (for 645), a 645 or 6x7 CCD. I guess we'll have to wait a while...? Don't you? Thanks for the update, Ryan. As a quick aside, Last week I made a round trip between Portland, Oregon and Ontario, California (east of LA). Security in Portland did a swab test on my gear bag (containing several lenses, ZX-M body and accessories) after being x-ray'd. I purchased all my film in California, and I had several rolls left on the return trip. Security at Ontario Airport did honor my request for a hand check for the film, although the request went up the flag pole until it got to the supervising coordinated directing manager-in-charge, who said, "Look, all you need to do is open the bag, look at each roll and make sure there's film there". RE: Collecting cameras
I've considered myself a camera collector since I discovered a couple of old Argus C-3's in Binghamton, NY antique shops 15 years ago. I've bought and sold or traded many cameras since then, following my interests, what struck my fancy, and also what finds I "lucked" into. I'm definitely a user/collector, as a camera that no longer works and isn't worth fixing (or, for that matter, cameras that take obselete film formats) isn't attractive to me. I love handling and playing with many of these fine examples of aesthetics, precision machinery and glass, but actually carrying them around, ~using~ them, is the ultimate reason for having them. Six years ago, I first put up a Web page dedicated to my camera collecting "philosophy" at http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/camera.htm and it's due for some updating, but still reflects my approach. I found Pentax cameras to be perhaps the ultimate collectible, largely because of the backwards compatibility and nearly straight lines of descendancy (in the hand, the compact, beautiful ME Super paired with an SMC-M 50/1.7 lens truly feels like a grandchild of a meterless H2 with one of the small Auto-Takumar lenses, for instance). But I also appreciate American cameras (the wonderfully Art Deco original Argus Model A, the curved ends of the Argus Markfinder, the Kodak Signet); my Leica IIIc/f feels, in operation, like nothing else I own; I've had several Kodak Retinas, currently holding onto a IIa; I have a Kodak Stereo 35 camera that takes modern slide film but essentially gives me a completely new format in three dimensions; and compact rangefinders from the '70s definitely deserve their own cult -- and have them! I used it most days until about 1971. Then I bought my first SLR, a Minolta SRT-101, which lasted only 8 months (R.I.P.), after a terminal swim in the Indian Ocean. I bought my SPF in 1973, and still use it I have 3 Spotmatic F's, 1 Spotmatic 500, 1 Spotmatic SP, 2 ME's, 1 MES and a Recoh KR-10 with motor-drive and Nikon Photomic FTn. I find I'm using an SPF, SP, SP500, and KR-10 equally, and the ME's and MES almost daily with semi-permanent Vivitar Zoom or Telephoto lenses. I'm awaiting a couple of Russian Range-finder cameras I bought through Ebay, a Zorki-4 and a FED 2. I'm intending use them for B&W Portrait work, and to buy a Jupiter or Helios 85mm/f2, 85mm/f1.5, and possibly a 100mm and 135mm lenses. I started my collecting in late Sixties with the Leica IIIf. I've got a few Leicas, my favorite being the IIIg. I also have a Hassy 1600, the original Hasselblad that still functions. Re: Re[2]: PENTAX need to move soon (long rant)
I guess I have a problem with those who try to use digital to replace film, rather than recognize that it is just another arrow in the quiver, to be used where appropriate and it fills the need. When I want family pics of the grandkids the digital is the way to go, easy, quick, and readily shareable. I also use it to preview potential shots to be taken with film. For other purposes out comes the 35mm and MF. There is no tool good for every purpose, and a camera is just a tool and not an end in itself. Soapbox vacated. Re[2]: PENTAX need to move soon (long rant)
Mishka, Interesting perspective. Earlier, I was also enamored by digital. I ended up with a Nikon Coolpix 990 and have taken 3000 pictures or so. The quality is ok, but no better than you said. For me, picture quality and control really came forward as things that are important to me. The instant part was usually to overcome the weaknesses of the digital P&S. My wife started to use the digital as I started to slack off and now, whenever she really needs to get a shot, she takes her ZX-10. The flash range is too short (no easy to clip on flash on the coolpix), the focus is too slow, the viewfinder too small, the ISO range too small, and on and on and on...you get the picture. To get good shots, she has gone back to film. For me, that was the time when I finally seriously entertained MF for control and picture quality. If you think 35mm film still has a big edge over digital, you ought to look at some MF images! Electronic shutters are (or can be) infinately variable. If the meter calls for 1/361 sec. that is what you get. Mechanical shutters are set increments and not usually adjustable. Re: AF 360 FGZ - opinions?
Sylwester, The 360FGZ advantages show themselves on the MZ-S or in control situations. It can do P-TTL, TTL, Automatic (built in sensor, multiple f-stop ranges),Manual with power output settings. It can also participate in multi-flash (wireless and wired) TTL setups with each flash set to different power level - all TTL. No other flash that Pentax makes comes close to doing these kinds of things. The FTZ's don't have multi-power manual settings or any automatic modes. The 500FTZ does have two advantages - more GN power and full tilt, swivel. So if all you are doing is clipping the flash onto the PZ-1p, there probably isn't much advantage or maybe even a disadvantage (less power, no swivel). But, if you take the flash off camera and/or use multiple flashes and/or use an MZ-S or the new ZX-L? then there are lots of advantages. HTH Bruce Dayton P.S. Any questions let me know. I have 3 of them and use them in single and multi-flash setups on both the MZ-S and the P67II. Re: Collecting cameras
My "users": MX, MV, 3 Spotmatics, Yashica Mat, Yashica Electro 35, Minolta HiMatic F My "collectors": Yashica A, Minolta 16II, Voigtlander Vito Automatic I, Kodak Brownie Starflash My collectors aren't collectors because they're worth anything. Quite the contrary. The A was my father's, and needs a shutter repair, which will probably never get done; I'm keeping it for nostalgia's sake. The Minolta 16 was a $10 eBay purchase, but the film cassettes are next to impossible to get, or too expensive when you find them - so I just think it's a cool little trinket. The Voigtlander would probably work if I put film in it, but the light meter is pooched, so again, it's just a cool looking piece. The Brownie was my first camera, so again, nostalgia. Collectively, they're worth about zip, but they are on a shelf, and make good conversation pieces. regards, frank "J. C. Most PJ stuff I do is not time critical, sure there are deadlines, but no front page stuff. Its more like some city news paper will call me and say, we need a shot of that 2 headed cow born out on Smiths farm to fill page 26. Plenty of time to shoot, devel, scan with the neg scanner and email off the results. but then, there is a semi in front of me that hits a bridge, rolls on its side and causes a general mess sending traffic into chaos, I whip out my MZ-S and catch the driver crawling out through the broken wind shield. I take a few snaps of the general carnage and whilst doing this another PJ shows up with a Nikon Digital. He snaps of 100 shots in 3 minutes and plugs it into his laptop and with cell phone attached and the images are at the office almost immediatly. My pics are not yet at the lab... For any PJ work now, especially freelance, you need a digital. I really don't want to go out and buy a second kit, Nikon, and have to buy all new glass for it. I have already invested heavily in glass and maintained my customer loyalty to PENTAX. I guess I would just like to see that my loyalty has not been misplaced. I truly believe in the PENTAX product and have been using it over 20 years and have marvelled at the progress made and watched other manufacturers fall in line behind. But something has changed, suddenly it seems that the leaders in the new technologies are Canon and Nikon. Kevin - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. If you can find one, the Motor A. The Me winders are plentiful, but not in real good working order. Jessops In England supplies a winder that include interval operation. I know of them, but have no experience - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
