Re[2]: Favorite wide lens?

2002-04-27 Thread Bruce Dayton

Debra,

I had a K mount Tokina RMC 24/2.8 once. I liked it fine. It was
metal and very solid like most Tokina lenses I have encountered. The
optical quality was reasonably good. As usual, flare is a bigger
issue with it than a Pentax SMC. Remember that the wider you go, the
more easy it is to get flare. But for the price, the Tokina was quite
good. I think I paid $70 dollars for mine a couple of years ago.

Re: Light Proofing a Darkroom.

2002-04-27 Thread Paul Ewins

 Hi,

I'm after some tips on light proofing a bathroom to use as a darkroom. I
need to lightproof one window and there door way.

Hi Paul,
I've converted my laundry which has two doors, a window and an
exhaust fan.

For the doors I bought 50mm wide rubber strip from Clark Rubber and tacked
it around the door so that it overlapped the door frame. I also use a
draught excluder (door snake) at the bottom.

For the window I got a small sheet of caneite, a sort of very soft
fibreboard. This is cut to the size of the frame with a couple of handles
bolted on to make it easier to get in and out. On the window frame I nailed
strips of 10mm quad to act as a light baffle and to stop the caneite from
being pushed in too far. Even then, I still resort to duct tape as a final
light excluder for when I am developing film.

For the exhaust fan I simply use a sheet of black cardboard, curved so that
there is an intake/outlet at each end.

After I had done this I did a light test on a bright suuny day, which
showed up a few leaks along the walls/ceiling and around the outside of the
doorframe (I think my house was built by apprentices). These were fixed with
judicious use of opaque filler.

This may be a little too permanent for your taste, but it does function
prefectly well and there wasn't much chance of Home Beautiful visitng my
laundry anyway.

Did somebody try this?

Re: Color correction in Photoshop

2002-04-27 Thread Paul Stenquist

The eyedroppers for setting black, gray and white points are in
levels. Are they in curves as well? I use levels to get close,
then if I have to reduce a red, blue or green cast or alter the contrast
slightly, I do it in curves. If I'm still not happy with all the colors
or if I feel the blacks aren't strong enough, I go to Selective Color.
I've found adding four or five percent black to the blacks in Selective
Color will provide a bit more contrast without losing any highlight
detail. Or if I want really deep reds, I'll add a few percentage points
of black to the red. The guys who run those amazing machines like the
Rank and Millenium, which are used to transfer moving picture film to
digital, frequently use black to pump up colors. PhotoShop works a lot
like those machines. I think both evolved from the same technology.
Paul

Butch Black wrote:

Try this. Go to levels, open each of the three colors separately take the
end sliders and bring them to where the histogram begins. After that open
curves. If you have something that is black or white in the image click on
the proper eyedropper and click that spot. If you have something that you
know is supposed to be medium neutral gray you can use that eyedropper, but
I've had less success with that. If it doesn't look right hold down the alt
key and the cancel turns into reset. When you're happy go back to levels in
the RGB screen and adjust the middle slider to set your gamma (midtone).

Been there, done that!

And now, a while down the line, I too tend to agree with Paul and Fred.

Does anyone ever snipe when there's no bids on an item?? g

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1346838266

I think when an item is failry fresh, it's fair game - unless there's a
BIN perhaps. But I personally wouldn't mention anything I'd seen to the
list. Sure to an individual who I know is looking, but not to the list.

Cheers,

Co££y

What we have to be careful of is announcing every good deal here
before it's consumated. That just drives the price up. If you're
looking for something, watch ebay. If you're not shopping and you
spot something, keep it to yourself. Those who work hard to
uncover thos rare bargains in auction sales should also reap the
rewards. In brief, don't alert the list to good buys. It only
 drives the price up. Paul

This has been argued back and forth here on the PDML a bit already,
but I have to say that I'm on your side on this, Paul.

The fact is, though, that it only takes one eager-beaver PDML-er to
blab about some bargain he/she has spotted on eBay (but which, I
would assume, he/she is not personally interested in bidding on - no
Golden Rule applies here, I guess) to unintentionally frustrate
(at least I would hope it is unintentional) fellow PDML-ers who were
hoping for a bargain...

Quite true, Rob. However, if I were interested in bidding on

Fred,

Sometimes I think that people announce these ebay finds just to
make sure nobody gets them cheap. I think they enjoy being
spoilers. In a group this large, you can be sure some are doing
it just for that reason. Perhaps they already have the same
item and just can't stand the thought of someone else getting
one for less than they paid.

Ebay posts

2002-04-27 Thread Matt Bevers

I just want to clarify something as I'm still relatively new to the list.
It seems as if there have been an awful lot of posts regarding ongoing Ebay
auctions lately. I thought that the unspoken rule was not to mention
something until it was over or only if it was in an odd category and
therefore not likely to be found. The idea of course being that the list
shouldn't be driving up the price on someone who has been quietly watching
an item and waiting to snipe.

Now, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, but is this a fairly
accurate description of what is accepted ebay policy, or not?

C'mon!
It's not an exactly hidden gen on the ebay -- *anyone * searching for
100mm Pentax macro would find it immediately.
As for hunting for a couple of years -- pardon me, but from the simple
common sense, that's 700+ days, and if you value your time at least $1/day,
the one on kevincamera.com for $700 should look like a bargain. Stop wasting
your time and get it. Saving a couple of hundreds at best by wasting *that
much* time is ridiculous (or were you hoping that the reserve there is
$100?).

(I personally know of a couple of

those who never spend time searching for Pentax bargains will have

RE: Is there an off-brand power pack for AF500FTZ? anyone built their own?

the broken ends
toether and make an extra long 20 ft 5p cord.

The Quantum Turbo and Turbo Z both have a
 connector cord
  that fits the 500.
Haven't gotten one for my 500 yet... but they
 claim it will
  recycle a
similar flash in less than a second from a full
 power
  output. They have a
pretty long charge life too. I think the website
 is
  http://www.qtm.com/
They're not cheap though... new the Turbo runs
 over $300.

I have a Turbo Z and love it. The 1 second recycle
 claim is pretty
acurate, though it varies a bit. Sometimes it can
 take up to 2
 seconds.

I only use about 1/2 the charge when I do a wedding.

One suggestion for those who might use the 500 with
 a turbo and a 5p
cable - use the 5p hot shoe adapter and plug the
 cable into that
instead of the flash. If you have your 5p cable
 running directly into
the flash along with the turbo cable, it becomes
 difficult to remove
the turbo cable because they're so close to one
 another. Basically,
you have to pull it out in such a way that weakens
 the connector -
I've broken 2 this way. If the 5p cord runs into the
 hot shoe adapter,
 you obviate the problem.

I tend to need to pull the power cord out to use it
 on another unit 4
or 5 times during a job.

Re: Ebay posts

2002-04-27 Thread T Rittenhouse

I think that it is only common courtesy not to step in someone else's
puddle. If you are not interested leave it alone. Touting it here is about
the same as making frivolous bids that you have no intention of honoring.

The two exceptions are:
1. If you are the seller, and a regular member of this list. (If you don't
contribute here, but just sign up to tout your Ebay auctions, I personally,
consider you to be a spammer).
2. If the item is in the category of outrageous, or wierd and not likely to
be bid on by anybody in their right mind, but good for a laugh. ($25,000 BIN
for instance).

Streets lined with Pentax

2002-04-27 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

I did the 'sad middle-aged bloke staring into camera shop windows'
thing today. Central London is awash with quality used Pentax
equipment at the moment. I haven't made notes or anything (I'm not
that sad), but a walk around the usual suspects revealed the
following:

at least 3 good looking, well priced LXs, at least one of which had
the Grip B and strap lugs.
KXs and KMs
2 x 24-35/3.5 Ms
screwmount 85/1.8
several K 50/1.2s
one K 50/1.4
a few of the decent long zooms such as K 85-210, 75-150 M
a 28-135/4
several overpriced pancakes

as well as the usual run-of-the-mill stuff and a lot of 6x7 and 645
stuff (not my field, so no details).

the window of Jacobs on New Oxford Street is particularly full of
goodness, but there's also quite a few nice shiny things in the little
'watch and camera centre' opposite Museum Street.

Cheers,

Bob

Portriga Rapid Alternatives

Last night The Jefferson Airplane was on the stereo, and a trip down
Memory Lane ensued. I pulled out some old negs, ones that I intended to
print many years ago and never did. The proof prints were made on
Agfa's wonderful Portriga Rapid. My eyes welled up, a tear fell, and
the memory of that wonderful, warm-toned paper filled me just as the
sounds of Grace Slick filled the room.

What might be a good contemporary replacement for Portriga Rapid?

It's a cool building - the steam lift is 3 stories tall and the building is
entirely poured concrete - even the roof. The windows are quartz. A few
years ago the owners would let you just wander around the lift, but now its
part of a structured tourist walk-through.

This shot does show that the lens is pretty rectalinear and while flare can
be a problem, it did not suffer from the backlighting of the windows.

Odp: Re: More on M42-P/K converters

Sylwester,

I purchased a General brand K-mount-to-screw adapter from BH Photo several
years ago. I found the construction to be as Maciej has described below...
and I also found that it would not focus at infinity. In this case, a
simple telephone call was all that was required to have BH credit the
purchase price (and the postage costs) to a new one of Pentax manufacture.
I can also surmise that this may cause a problem, especially with those
photo dealers that may be a bit less reputable than BH.

Currently, I have two of the Pentax adapters. I use them quite frequently,
on both my K2DMDs and my LXs, with my 500mm and 1000mm Takumar lenses. They
function well and provide excellent results.

Best,
Lance

But there are many adapters from small workshops on the market.
Some of the don't allow to focus on infinity not because od
workmansship failure but because of different design. They look
like the Pentax adapter wit a ring added that covers the bayonet
mount, lightproofing the connection. Doing that it adds about 1
mm or so to the focal lengt and work as a mini extention tube.
It's useful when working with M42 extension tubes, especially
with those home-made ones. I had borrowed one of theese from a
friend and it wasn't covering the area of the bayonet mount and
the light was leaking into the body wit a very poor results on

Based on what I've seen online - Ebay - it usually goes for around $135.00

Scanner question

2002-04-27 Thread Pawel Czarnul

Dear All,

I'm trying to decide what scanner I should buy. I would like to be able to
get reasonable scans from 35mm (negative + slide) as well as scan prints and
some other standard media. I've narrowed my choices to:

1. Flatbed: Epson 2450 (2400dpi with an adapter, Dmax=3.3)
2. Film: Canon 2710 (2700dpi Dmax 3.2) or PrimeFilm 1800 (1800 dpi Dmax=?) +
a cheap flatbed scanner.

What do you think? I definitely need a standard flatbed as well. Is it
possible to make a good 8x10 or a bit larger from a negative/slide scanned
on the Epson 2450? Are there any alternatives in this price range?

I appreciate your comments.

Pawel

6x7 checkup

2002-04-27 Thread William Kane

Hey gang,

Just got my $78 6x7 in the mail. It looks really beat up, and may
not have been worth the price, but at least I have a parts camera. I'm
trying to figure out how to test out the shutter, and everything else.

Can anyone tell me how to tell if this is a MLU 6x7 or not? What am
I looking for?

Mirror is stuck in the half-way-up position. No battery (I'm gonna
go out to get one in a bit). Of course, no lens and no film and no
prism.

My first thoughts? WOW, THIS is an SLR that's PERFECTLY sized to my
hand. If this camera doesn't work, I'm defininitly going to wind up
with a 6x7, or possibly 67II that does work.

Sigma 50-200 field report

2002-04-27 Thread frank theriault

Went out for a nice long walk this morning (got home just in time to
watch the Habs eek by the Bruins - thank you Jose Theodore) with the
new Sigma 50-200 zoom hung on the MX. Walked through a railway yard,
down to the docks, and to St. Lawrence Market to photograph some street
musicians.

First impressions of the lens:

Nice size, not too big or heavy for what it is. Even though I didn't
have a monopod or tripod with me, a mount on the lens would be nice.
It's heavy enough that I wouldn't want to mount the body on a 'pod,
because I'm afraid it would be too much strain.

I like the screw-lock on the barrel - once you get all focussed and the
zoom where you want it, you don't have to worry about it moving - nice
for architectural shots where I had to wait several minutes for cars or
people to move out of the way.

The one downside (that I didn't notice yesterday) is the aperture ring
is plastic and very flimsy feeling. It doesn't move smoothly at all. I
guess it's that famous Sigma build quality that I keep hearing about.
Geez, this wasn't a cheap lens when it was new. As I said yesterday,
the barrel is metal. How much more would it have cost them to put a
solid feeling metal aperture ring on it? Maybe $10 or $20? Reeks of
cheapness, imho.

Anyway, the proof will be in the pictures, and hopefully I'll have the
first few that ended a roll within a week or so...

regards,
frank

Re: LX motor drive - question

2002-04-27 Thread James Rupprecht

Yes, the charger is a dumb charger. They can still be purchased new from
BH and other places... I believe they go for $60 or so, but it has been a
while since I bought one. You can also use Power Pack M, which is the
device designed to let you use A/C current for the motor.

The biggest issue with the NiCd packs is not overcharging (a full charge is
16 hours) but with having to wait until they are dead to recharge them, or
rigging a device to discharge them before you charge them. My best advice
would be to buy the NiCd pack, use it w/o worrying about the NiCd battery
life, and they when they die, replace the NiCd cells with NiMH cells.
Almost any battery shop can build or order the cell packs...I can give you
specs if you need them.

Personally, thought I like the notion of using AA cells, I find the
vertical grips much harder to use...they always seem to be in the way, and
make the camera much more bulky.

Re: Oldest lens on newest body?

2002-04-27 Thread Fred

Here's a question for you Old lens--new body. Who's put
together pieces with the largest age difference?

My entry (sure to be beat) is a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm
 F1.4 (maybe the early 1970's) mounted on a 2001 MZ-S.

 Takumar 35mm 1:4 (pre-set) on a LX... (with a Miranda 46mm diam
WA hood). This lens has been produced in '58 and '59.

Well, my entry is not an extreme difference in age (but I could put
the lens on my wife's ZX-5n, which is a lot newer than any of my
LX's), but here's an Asahi-Kogaku Takumar 58/2.4 (from an Asahiflex
IIA) (which could be from as early as 1954) mounted on an LX -

http://www.cetussoft.com/pentax/5824ltd2.jpg

Now, if I did put this lens on the ZX-5n (a Christmas present from a
few months ago), that would be as much as a 47-year difference -
g. (With the LX in the photo, the difference is probably only
about 30 years, since it's an older LX.)

By the way, it took two adapters to do this. First, I used an Asahi
37mm-to-42mm Adapter C, and then I used a Pentax 42mm-to-K-mount
Mount Adapter K.

2002-04-27 Thread Cotty

1) how hard the chargers are to get, either from Pentax /or else
   g/ (any for sale :) ?

I sold a charger and NiCad Pack LX on eBay recently for £89. Peter at
Camera Direct has the NiCad Packs for about £120 (I think). The chargers
are simple two-prong affairs that take either ~110v or ~230v and turn it
into a trickle of ?v ?m/A straight into the NiCad Pack.

2) how do they work - it's a dumb charger I presume, without any
electronics inside to watch the battery...

You plug one end into a wall socket, the other into the NiCad Pack,
switch the NiCap Pack on, and a small light glows on the charger. Full
charge in about 6 to 10 hours.

3) how hard to get are the T aa Grip Ms... any for sale :) ?

Re: ME Super (et al) Shutter Speed Buttons

2002-04-27 Thread William Johnson

Yes, this is correct. On the Super Program, down only goes down and
stops, it doesn't cycle around to 1/2000 and back down again like an ME
super. Also, if you hold the buttons down, the speeds cycle faster on
the ME super. Pity this didn't carry over to the Super Program.

Re: Scanner question

2002-04-27 Thread Joseph Tainter

I think there was a post here some time back about the Epson flatbed not
giving sharp results.

If you are serious get a film scanner. The Primefilm is also not a
high-quality scanner. The Canon has good resolution, but I think that
model doesn't have any dust/scratch removal capability. And you can do
better than 3.2 dmax.

If cost is a consideration (as it was with me) look on eBay for a used
Nikon LS 2000. I've been using mine ($570) for several months now and am
completely satisfied.

 Hey gang,

Can anyone tell me how to tell if this is a MLU 6x7 or not?
What am
 I looking for?

An MLU button HAR!!
If it has MLU, it will be on the right side of the mirror box,
opposite the lens release. It is a small push switch.

Mirror is stuck in the half-way-up position. No battery
(I'm gonna
go out to get one in a bit). Of course, no lens and no film
and no
 prism.

The shutter was cocked and tripped with the battery out. No
biggie. Put a new PX28 (or equivalent) into the battery tray
(found on the bottom of the camera), then push the little button
on the front of the camera below the shutter button.

My first thoughts? WOW, THIS is an SLR that's PERFECTLY
sized to my
hand. If this camera doesn't work, I'm defininitly going to
wind up
with a 6x7, or possibly 67II that does work.

Forte warmtone fibre based papers are quite nice. I don't recall

though. If you had the chance to use Ektalure though, the Forte
takes a somewhat yellower tone than the Ektalure when selenium

I always thought Ektalure looked like fine Corinthian leather

For Dave and Buddy ...

2002-04-27 Thread Shel Belinkoff

... and for all who have lost their beloved pets

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to some-
one here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows
and hills for all our special friends so they can run and
play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine
and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to
health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made
whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our
dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy
and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when
one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright
eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly,
he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend
finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to
be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more
into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your
life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Re: 6x7 checkup

2002-04-27 Thread William Kane

William,

Thanks for your help. This is a non-MLU 6x7, so I guess Pentax
doesn't support it anymore.

I've looked through the camera a bit. Cycled the shutter a couple of
times without the batteries or film in the camera . . . now the shutter
doesn't want to seem to want to trip. Maybe it just needs batteries, or
maybe it really is a parts camera . . .

. . . at any rate, most things appear to be in order, except the knob
on the right side of the camera (from behind) is missing. I believe
that it is used to set the number of frames from 10 to 21 depending on
what film type you are using (right?).

Counter is also a bit odd. Appears that the screws are loose, as the
top rotates around and the arrow moves with it. I think I figured it
out that the arrow needs to point directly to the front of the camera.
It'll just be a matter of little screwdrivers to fix that.

Screen and mirror are clean. Well, screen is a bit dusty, and there
is a sticky bit of goo on it, but that looks like it'll come right off.

There is some engraving on the left side of the housing above the
flash sockets. Appears this camera was a rental unit.

Thanx! That's what I've been looking (apparently not hard enough) for.

Who makes a good 1.5X or 2X tele-converter for the Takumar screw mount
lenses? Has anyone ran any tests?

Dear All,

I'm trying to decide what scanner I should buy. I would like to be able to
get reasonable scans from 35mm (negative + slide) as well as scan prints
and some other standard media. I've narrowed my choices to:

1. Flatbed: Epson 2450 (2400dpi with an adapter, Dmax=3.3)
2. Film: Canon 2710 (2700dpi Dmax 3.2) or PrimeFilm 1800 (1800 dpi Dmax=?)
+ a cheap flatbed scanner.

What do you think? I definitely need a standard flatbed as well. Is it
possible to make a good 8x10 or a bit larger from a negative/slide scanned
on the Epson 2450? Are there any alternatives in this price range?

I appreciate your comments.

Pawel

Re: Screwmount Tele-converters

2002-04-27 Thread Steve Larson

Hi Ken,
 I`ve never seen a 1.4 or 1.5x TC in M42, I just don't think there are
any, I would love to be proved wrong though. In 2x TC there are an
abundance of them, but good 7 element ones are a little trickier
to find. I found a Soligor C/D 7 AUTO TELE CONVERTER 2X TO
FIT PENTAX (that`s what it says on it), that doesn`t degrade the
image too bad.
